One year ago, Martin became a contributor of Brülosophy, leaving behind The Homebrew Challenge channel he'd spent years building to start The Brülosophy Show. Since then, he has changed as a brewer. In this episode, Martin offers a behind-the-scenes peek into the changes he's experienced over the last year, as well as sharing his thoughts on what it's like brewing for Brülosophy.

As an artist, I used to be happy selling the odd painting and producing another one or two as I felt the urge. Then it became a job, as I was under contract to produce artwork, not at my convenience, but at the customer's need. It became a chore. I finally gave that up and went back to just painting as I felt the artistic urge, and am MUCH happier as a result. The same is true of my brewing. It got to the point where I was brewing 80 gallons per month at the request of all my friends who enjoyed my beers on their taps at home; even supplying kegs on demand for local baseball games and yacht club events. Then came COVID. That all came to a halt, happily, as now I just brew for me and a few buddies, and not on any schedule demand. I have come back to my happy place, as I see you have as well. Been enjoying your videos from day one of the Homebrew challenge, and I have been addicted to Brulosophy since day one as well. I'm so dang happy to see you in your new home at Brulosopy producing more content for all of us to enjoy. Cheers!

I am a huge fan of Brülosophy for over five years and when they announced you'd be joining I couldn't believe it! 🥳 What a great announcement that was and I really love the humble, yet expierenced way you talk into the camera. Doing videos about brewing myself, I can relate about how it's not as fun anymore, because you turning it into a video production and the cameras need to roll. Long story short, I enjoy the stuff you guys put up a lot! Prost from Germany 🍻

I am my own worst critic when it comes to how the final beer comes out. My friends and family add to their opinion to it, but more experienced brewers taste testing would help. Water chemistry is something I am still trying to remember. Often, I forget or don't bother with it. This brings me to efficiency of brew day and consistency of how I brew because that would improve the final product. I will say episodes like this and homebrew pages have inspired, helped or improved me.

Congratulations! I don't miss a video you post as I always learn something cool that can help me progress as a homebrewer. I would say that one thing you and perhaps TheApartmentBrewer do better than many other channels is challenge conventional wisdom "the way we've always done it" with empirical data. I can't get enough of that, and the way you simplify the brew day back down to the actual essentials is wonderful.
Some day I'd love a longform video or written post that starts with the shortest possible brew cycle (brew day, fermentation, conditioning, carbing) as a baseline then you detail out exceptions where certain styles/choices require additional time or effort to get right. e.g. "here's a SMASH beer with a kviek yeast and here's how quick it goes from grain to glass, but now if we increase the ABV you need to add more grain and also more yeast cells with a higher gravity-tolerant yeast strain and here's how we do that.. and so on. Sort of a 'variations on a theme' piece that might need to be a series.

I absolutely love Brülosophy. LOVE. With that said, I honestly think you've been the best thing to happen to them for a long time. I love your style and attitude. I actually make sure to _not_ see your videos and instead save them for when I'm in a "homebrew slump" - You know when months have gone by and you haven't even touched your brewing equipment and you just feel like you've "lost it" - That's when I watch videos by someone like you and I almost can't wait for the video to be over so I can start brewing again.

Hey Martin, Big fan of your work and of the channel in general.
I do have a suggestion for the future of the show. I am a scientist myself, and using P < 0.05 is a bit debatable. What it means is that there is at least 95% chance that the results are significant. In other words: if you perform 20 studies, the outcome of one is on average not reflecting reality. In biology we use P =< 0.05. Physicists and chemists are a bit more rough. I can't say for social sciences.
The outcome of the experiment depends strongly on the tasters and there are things you cannot control: you make a belgian witbier, it has coriander, what if it tastes like soap for a couple of guys? All my friends like simcoe but one: it has a touch of cat pee for him. I am a huge fan of the hop sorachi ace, most of my friends passionately hate it. There are so many variable and it is a very rough job to make sense out of it.
May I recommend to you guys to get in touch with a mathematician specialized in statistics to discuss your process and goal? I think the person will be more than happy to discuss this (bring a 6 pack just in case :p)
I do think P< 0.05 is a fairly good measurement however, it could be nuanced and depending on the parameters tested and the sample size, other statistical tests would be more suitable.

I love this channel, sometime when you want to just phone in a video could you go over what exactly you are doing for water. Our water is terrible and I really want to invest in a filtration system but I can't see sinking that kind of money into it unless I know what I do is going to solve all the problems. I'd really love to hear more about your set up.

As you've done an Exbeeriment on the effect, fermentation under pressure, has on a lager yeast, I'd like to see a pressure fermentation experiment focusing on a more "characterful" yeast strain - B45 Gnome or Stefon, for example. A Belgian Blonde or Pressure Hefe? As with the lagers, I don't think they'd be a perceptible difference...in my opinion.

Base malt yield % test. Our brew calculators don't stay updated. I've messed up more than one beer because of it. How to.
Save the test wort for fast pitch.
Starters revisited. Oxidation even temp control on lager yeast.
Bottle conditioning fails/successes. Gyle, sugar, yeast.
    A few ideas for ya..🇺🇸🍻🇺🇸

    Glad you're enjoying brewing again!
    Here's an idea for a mini-series: Hand-pulled (real/cask ale) vs. Draft
You'd have to get a beer engine, which aren't cheap (single pulls seem to be close to $1000), but it would be really interesting to have tasters compare the same beer on draft vs. hand-pulled.
Down the road you could do a proper cask comparison too--hand-pulled beer from a keg vs. a cask, maybe temperature tasting comparisons, etc.

I'm not sure this fits your goals, but it would be interesting to test the tasters on human ability to differentiate between styles of beer that are extremely similar. I've seen pilsners that are labeled as national styles (Czech, German, American, etc), but I think that if you blind tasted me I would be hard pressed to identify the difference.
