    Most people fail to realize that even though gratuities are automatically placed on your sign and sail receipt, they are NOT mandatory. You can opt out and pay what ever you deem necessary to each worker during your stay instead of letting the cruise line force you to pay a predetermined amount. The cruise lines use the automatic gratuity fee as means to pad their profit margin by not paying their workers a livable wage and to shame their customers into mitigating their unfair compensation policies. Being an accountant for 2 major cruise lines, I know that only 20 - 25% of the pool of gratuity payments actually go to the workers. The rest is kept by the cruise line as miscellaneous profit. So, the next time you book a cruise and see the option to "pre-pay" for gratuities or see it on your final bill, you will know that only a small portion of it is actually going to the worker.

      Can you undo prepaid gratuities before the cruise or when on the ship? I prepaid because I like to tip but always wondered if 100% of the tips went to the workers. My upcoming cruise is 34 days so the $16 per days adds up! What can I do?

    This is the most honest straight-forward vid on gratuities...we tip for bar servers, restaurant waiters, stewards and for any requested room services, together totalling more than the auto grants. We are guests not employers, and should be treated as such.

    I’ve only been on 1 cruise so far and have another booked. Stumbled upon this video. Y’all are fun and bubbly!!!! Thanks for this information! I suspected the cruise line were either paying the workers very little or only paying them from the “optional” gratuities. When you said the workers said they don’t see those tips, that’s heartbreaking how poorly the cruise lines treat their employees from all over the world.

    Love your video. I think all cruisers should read the fine print in their contracts. The Automatic gratuities are not automatically divided up to the crew on your cruise, which most people think happens. It goes to the company, who in turn use it to hand out bonuses/wages etc across their fleets. Thanks for shedding light on this hot topic.

    After my cruise I was waiting for a few hours in the airport in Fort Lauderdale. There was a group of about 10 Cruise workers who were going home. I asked them if the tips were really divided up and given to them. They said no. They said no. I believe the money paid in pre-pay gratuities just goes to the company and they use that money to pay the workers their base salary, but NOT EXTRA. I've never removed my prepaid gratuities but I am tempted to.

    • @VacayModeTravels
      @VacayModeTravels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah we talked to many Cruise workers to and they all had the same answer they do not get the gratuity after they started the prepaid gratuity people stop tipping them so they said they actually get paid less now I feel that's not right or Fair that's why we tip them ourselves in their hand to make sure they get it thanks again for turning in Glad information was helpful they won't give you a problem if you remove the gratuity at Guest Services please feel free to subscribe to keep up with our latest travel news tips and cruise advice

      Shawn & KC On Vacay Mode
      Yes! And all those "know it alls" say if you remove the tips that the workers have to turn in their cash tips. That is pure BS. Too many people are believing the lies the cruise companies tell. The cruise companies should charge the real cost and pay their people a real wage. When I eat at a restaurant I don't go in the back and tip the dishwasher or janitor. If I prepay gratuities the money just goes to the cruise ship company.

    @VacayModeTravels Great information. I have been cruising for a while. When I call Carnival and Royal Caribbean they are stating that it is mandatory. Carnival manager even stated that they will add any unpaid balance to my sail account if not paid. How do I know 100% that I can remove the gratuity charges without them making it hard for me. I would prefer to pay gratuities in-person to the people who serviced me and not to the cruise line.

    My family is going to Cruise next March. I strongly agree and believe what two of you mention about the gratuities in the Cruise. I worked in a hotel in Ca for more than 20 years. My coworkers from the banquet department told me that their tips were paid by the hour ( $ 17.00 /hr in 2019 ) plus hour wages. So if the guest check of the event was $10,000 the hotel charged the guest for $2,000 tips (20 % automatic ) but the total tips the hotel paid to all servers (maybe 5 servers on duty ) was $450. ($17x5x5 hrs ) The rest of the tips would be kept by the hotel. There is no doubt in my mind that the tips from the guests in the Cruise will go to the hotel or the management. Also there is no law in this world that the guest has to pay the tips because the tips are considered an appreciation of service. In the coming Cruise for sure I will not prepay any tips and fight if the Cruise charges any tips in my credit card. Of course I will take care of the servers, housekeepers , or anybody that assists me during the trip. I hate to see the company or the management take the majority of tips (without working) while their staff work their asses on the floor.

    I got a question......What about the buffet servers and other free food stands on board? Does pre-paid gratuities cover them? Are they at a loss is you remove your gratuities? Should you tip them, or are they standard-pay-tip-or-no-tip-employees? I get that bartenders and specialty restaurants already include the tip in the purchase. What about the freebies?

So, for clarification when we go to do this... ask for the envelopes... who exactly do we tip on our own? I’m hearing/reading “waiter(s), room steward”... Basically, how many envelopes should we get and who exactly will we tip? LOL Or will that vary per ship? We just don’t want to forget anyone.

    As an English Guy I fail to see why you have to pay gratuity to anyone. It is not the job of the customer to subsidise the staffs wages, THAT is the EMPLOYERS responsibility END OF STORY. If you can not OR will not pay a livable wage you should not be in the Trade. Or are we BRITTISH just happy with our Minimum wage structure in the UK set by the Govt. UK Bar staff are paid £15 per hour with a mandated MINIMUM 4 week PAID VACATION TIME PER YEAR, PLUS National Days OFF WORK which would be equiverlent it USA State Days off. If you let your Employers set the wage limit they will reduce it to the State Minimum.

    I’m getting ready to take my wife on her first cruise. I’ve been a few, but that was back in 2000, 2001, and 2002 when they did envelopes. On each cruise, I only went to the main dining room one night on each one and that was formal night. Why would I pay the waiters and all them for the whole cruise when I’m only using the services once?!
    I always hand my room steward at least $20 the first time I see them and then at least another $20 at the end

      I’m more excited to see her face when she sees the ship, gets on the ship, those sea days, and ports. She is from Ohio and the best waters she has seen is Clearwater Beach when we go to Jacksonville every year. She has never seen those Caribbean waters. I’ve been on the Triumph, Victory, and Triumph again. This was back when those were the big ships until the Spirit came out. We are just taking a 4 day on the Liberty and from what I’ve seen, it looks to be a sister ship to those ships I’ve been on

    I typucally give 20% for standard service and upwards of 50% for outstanding service. I started becoming a better tipper when I had to rely on tips (during a divorce) but one thing for sure...I prefer the person to know I appreciate them and know where that tip comes from. I wish people would cut out the slave/servants mentality. My job involved taking people from a-b offering travel advice along the way. At no point have I ever expected a tip. My opinion is that the tipping culture is designed to keep people in servitude and if a job is worth doing just pay me the living wage that's due to me. Why should I tip people who may have a better income than I have ? Wouldn't that make me the world's biggest Mug ? All the Toby's who continue to give the Cruise lines their hard earned money can pay a little extra for the ones who don't . They have the satisfaction of being a big spender. The Cruise company knows that from the " moment you walked in the joint ". I tip the people who actually interact with me . The room attendant is first on my list.

    • @judvu1926
      @judvu1926 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To those people who are not Americans, I did a little research to understand the tipping culture in America especially pertaining to the restaurant industry. Some comments suggested that the restaurant business had a high failure rate, so therefore owners tend to pay below the National minimum wage which is about eight dollars per hour. Apparently restaurants are excluded from that law and tend to pay two and a half dollars leaving the customer to make up the shortfall. One American observer suggested that foreigners should follow likewise quoting " when in Rome, do as the Romans do ". I choose to differ and being British I prefer not to re- colonize them but suggest they abandon their colonial Sub-servancy and "pay onto Ceasar what is due to Ceasar" nobody owes anyone a living, if a Restaurant or any business goes bust it merely passes the custom to another business. When Cruise ship is fully booked, then the customer has to find another ship with vacant accommodation. That's the rule of the Jungle we live in. America is Capitalist with a capital "C". So why should we support this little convenient Bubble ?

Remember that those people come from very poor countries and their year salaries hardly reach $15,000, for their good paying employees. Just check how much CEOS gets in bonuses every year, millions just in bonuses. I stopped paying gratuities and pay cash instead to the one who really deserved. Great video guys. God bless you both..

      Hi Van She Goes. Love the name. Great question. Well, I guess it is just based on honesty. Regardless if you add gratuity or not its automatic place on there once you're on the cruise. It's up to what you would like to do from there. It's like going to resturant. Tipping is recommended, but for most people based on their service, it would make or break if they want to tip or not. If they tell you to prepay it before your trip you refuse to. Prepaid at the end of your trip they will try to secretly add it to your bill the night before you leave so go to guest services the day before and ask him to remove it from your bill no questions asked and let them know you want to chip them yourself and ask for envelopes to distribute the money the way you want and who you want to give it to

    • @treebranchdan

      Question: If memory serves me correct, they slide that statement under your door at night time the day before debarkation. Do you go to guest services before that on the day before? Also do they ask you was there a problem or something like that? Also we do the dinner in the dining room on the last night with all of the servers shake your hand at the end and expect money. Are you able to take it off before that last for dinner and give them an envelope? What I mean is has it hit your account so as that it can be taken off before the last dinner?

  • @RobertaHanscom

    You prefer the clean ironed sheets on your bed? Your room steward depends on the laundry staff to prepare them. You prefer clean running water in sinks and shower? They are provided by the desalination staff, machine crews, plumbers who support the ship. The whole process is a team effort. Some appear directly, but they are dependent upon the hidden servers who provide the infrastructure of the crew. Gratuities appear as a line in a paycheck. They are not handed out in cash in the currency of the workers' country. Received? Yes! Pay the ship's gratuities. Reward your obvious crew? Yes, if one also can. But pay the ship line’s gratuities for the persons working behind the scenes.

      Hi again,
      Just got off the phone with Royal Caribbean and the guy stated gratitudes is mandatory. Any insight on this would be much appreciated.

  • @ford4life069
    @ford4life069 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wait, you prepay AND they add it to the card on the ship too so you get charged twice?!

    • @VacayModeTravels
      @VacayModeTravels  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question. No, You will not be charged twice you would just receive a bill on all the purchases that you make while you were on the cruise. Thanks for watching our video, and dont forget to subscribe if you haven't already.

  • @bellarosa3788
    @bellarosa3788 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'll just keep prepaying..It's easier for me to do it that way. Then we just give extra tips to whoever. We never buy anything extra on the ship. Only at the ports.

    John in the back who slaves making the donut that Jim serves with a slick smile deserves some of the “extra” tip you leave. case closed.

    If we can only afford like ten bucks per person in tips, would that be okay?

    to Shawn/KC
    Very good to see ur video,ur opinion is not wrong,but it could mislead sb.and i want to share my opinion with everybody.
    How many percent of the person tip the crew good (or enough) after they refund their grantuity,of course after they enjoy the cruise and got excellent service?my cousin worked on cruise,he told me,some stingy people refund grantuity and give only 10$ for 7days cruise, sepecislly the English, Germany, Isreal people,even somebody just run without tipping,that hurts the crew very much. U know the crew's salary is very low and work long hours, they do their best to offer the guest outstanding service,and make them excellent cruise experience.how come they do this to the crew. When u guys received good service,pls tip the crew enough,dont assume that u will get bad service then refund the grantuity the 1st day when u bording the ship.by the way, most of the big cruise companies,the grantuity they charged will go to the crew who serves u 100%.

    Great video. I'm not cheap or broke because I watch my money. I tip well because I want too however, I do not do prepaids or by force. I remove all gratuities and tip if I want. It's my money. We're already spending thousands to just cruise. I'm not paying more. They add tips to drinks and etc as it is, I'm not adding more. I'll give the room attendant a tip in cash only.

      No wonder they're building newer and larger ships. Because they don't pay them decent salaries. Guess who's paying their salaries?🤔🤔🤔 nope not me...

      if u dont want any kinds of service like change the towels and sheets,dont want to make the bed(including the 1st day when u boarding the cruise),u dont go to the dinning room for even 1 meal,u dont want to drink even 1shot in the bar.only in that condition u can tip nothing.how come,u come to the cruise exspecting receiving service,and nice hospitality,free of charge?come on! i know u already pay the cruise(the ticket),that is only ur basic,like u check in the Motel,if u need more or u want to enjoy ur stay,u have too pay more,buy more!

      They would try to make you feel guilty but they lie to you and tell you that they're giving the gratuity to the room stewardess and the rest of the crew but they actually never give it to them they tell you that to make you believe that's what they're doing but it's not true we do it all the time and we tell them we don't want to hear the excuses remove it

      I'm so glad I watch your videos. Thank you because I'd rather do like you do and just pay on my own but alot of people are so judgemental they dont want to give you straight answers. So I'll remember to go to guest services my last day and have them removed... I'm glad and thankful to get advice from experienced cruisers.

      Did you know I called Carnival and asked them this and they told me I had to pay them or else. So thats why I was confused but now it makes sense. They tried to shame me for asking a simple question.
