  • In this video I show you how to knit a dog jumper. I use a pair of straight needles and a random ball of wool I found. This video is aimed at people who have never knitted before so shows how to do this from scratch.
    If you have any questions feel free to comment or contact me and I will do my best to help.

    No complicated terms, very practical ways of measuring. Thanks for this. Some of us just want to make something for our dog. We don’t want to curl our brains in the process.

    This cast on was way less frustrating than the long tail cast on I was doing. This way I can just make as many stitches as I need without having to guess about how much I would need and restarting until it was right. Thank you!

      That's a really good idea! Should be easy enough, just a rectangle as long as the circumference of their neck, and as wide as the length of their neck and sew it to the top😁 I didn't think of it because Tia has a very tiny neck so it wasn't needed. I'll keep that in mind if I make Toby a jumper, he has a long neck (perfect for stealing food off the counter 😅).

    Like previous commenters, I was looking for an easy way to make Tillie something to wear in the winter. (One wonders how dogs survived for thousands of year before we knitted for them.) Looks easier than the fancy sweaters that need three sizes of round needles. Since I'm a bit more advanced, I think I'll try to rib knit a neck and leg endings. Anybody tried something like this?

    I am a knitter for over 25 years and using your knitting needle to slip the cast off stitch over its much faster and for beginners there are many many binde off / cast off tutorials on you tube that show you. Faster way and it's extremely easy and also faster way to knit a garter stitch and cast on stitches I personally would not use the cable cast on as you Yousef as a beginner cast on as it can make your cast on tight for beginners knitters sorrvto knit pick !!

    • @RachelsReptiles

      If it was somewhere cold enough that was likely to have rain or snow I would look for waterproof material and attach that over the top. Lots of second hand shops have waterproof jackets and trousers (the really thin material ones) that you can buy very cheap. If that was attached on top it would make a waterproof layer and would also keep in the heat. Unless you're in the depths of winter in Canada you don't want to layer too much on your dog because they can overheat pretty quickly during exercise!

      You'll Want To Follow The Video And Knit A Test Piece...Cast On Maybe 15 Stitches Like She Does, Knit A Few Rows, Then Measure How Many Stitches Are In An Inch Of Knitting.
      If Your Pet Has A 4 Inch Chest You Would Multiply The Number Of Stitches Per Inch In Your Test Piece By The 4 Inches To Get How Many Stitches You Really Need.
      Now To Cast On For The Back, Follow The Same Formula, Measure From The Back Of Your Pet's Neck To Their Back, Just Before Their Legs, Let's Say Its 9 Inches... Then You Would Once Again Multiply The Stitches In An Inch Of Your Test Piece By 9 And Cast On That Number, Then Knit Quite A Few Rows Until The Piece Can Comfortably Reach Over The Top Of Your Pet's Back, Then Sew It Together Like She Shows In The Video. Good Luck 💚

      The Amount Of Stitches You'll Need Will Be Different Depending On The Length Of Your Pets Body, And How Many Stitches Per Inch You Have.
      For Example: If You Measure Your Pets Body & It's 9 Inches, And You Have 6 Stitches Per Inch In Your Test Piece, You Would Cast On 9 × 6 Stitches For The Length Of The Piece, Then Knit For A Few Rows, And Check The Measurement Until You've Knitted Long Enough To Reach Over Your Pet's Body From One Arm To The Other, Then Sew It Together Like She Shows In The Video. Good Luck. 💙

    How many stitches do u cast on for 6 inches for the chest

    • @RachelsReptiles
      @RachelsReptiles  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That completely depends on your own knitting. I used to knit very tight when starting because I wasn't used to it and 1 inch needed near 20 stitches. Now I'm more practiced 1 inch takes about 10 stitches depending on the thickness of the wool. Thicker wool = less stitches. I'd suggest knitting a little practice piece roughly 20 stitches wide and then measure it after a few rows. Don't measure the stitches you first cast on, they will be closer together and not a real representation of the end measurement. Then you can figure out how many stitches you will need😊

      Just Measure Your Doggo Like She Does, Knit A Bit With Your Needles, Measure The Amount Of Stitches Per Inch, Then Cast On The Amount Of Stitches Per Inch Of Your Doggo's Chest And Body...
      Example: If Your Stitches Per Inch On Your Test Piece Is 7 Stitches In An Inch & Your Dog's Chest Is 7 Inches, You Would Cast On 49 Stitches For The Chest Piece, Then You'd Do The Same For The Body, Arm To Arm, Let's Say The Doggo Has A 15 Inch Long Body, You Would Cast On 15 × 7 Stitches, Then Knit Until The Piece Reaches From The Outside Of One Arm (The Beginning) To The Other Arm. @@RachelsReptiles Yes Sweetheart Thats A Size 8... I Have A Bunch Of Old Needles That Have Only The Size. Those Should Be Equal To A 5mm In Any Other Needle Brand. I've Been Knitting For An Embarrassingly Long Time, And You Did Well In This Video. I Might Suggest That You Show Your Viewers How To Knit A Test Piece And Measure Stitches Per Inch So They Can Measure Their Pet & Formulate How To Build A Jacket For Any Pet (Since Many Seem To Be Asking 😆) I Like The Striping Yarn You Chose & The Garter Stitch Will Allow The Fabric To Stretch & Breathe Giving Your Baby Comfort & Warmth. Like I Said, Well Done. 💜
