Sonor Vintage Series 3-piece Shell Pack Review

- The Sonor Vintage Series takes cues from its own Teardrop drums of the 1950s and '60s, incorporating modern shell and tuning technology into its time-tested builds for dependability yesterday's kits can't touch. The 9-ply German beech shells with rounded bearing edges deliver an uncharacteristically warm, round tone for Sonor - one that classic drum enthusiasts are guaranteed to adore.

I honestly watch all these demo's cause of Nick, he explains everything extremely well, and can also play extremely well. half the time I'm not even interested in the product but I know it'll still be a good watch
Same here.
Cameron Shashlo Haha same here
Yeah, you're absolutely right!😊
You must live with your parents.
I like sweetwater best for drum reviews and Nick is quite a good player.
This is simply my favourite drum kit, everything about the sonor vintage is absolutely gorgeous, it’s the endgame kit for me, it’s everything I love in a kit and it works for literally every style, it’s flawless
I'm off to buy a kit now, but first i have an appointment with an armored bank truck..
I'm a Tama guy all day but Benny greb's kit always sounds amazing and he uses this kit all the time. But Benny's tuning and playing are superb and can make any kit sound good
Andy Ham yea I'm a tama guy too with deedub a close sec but the tama artisan is awesome what are your thoughts on Keller shells I like those too
Benny, Jojo Mayer and Gavin Harrison have the best sounding kits, and they all play Sonor, but it's not just the brand, it's how they tune their kits and how they play. I played Mapex Saturn which is more affordable than hi-end Sonor, Tama, Pearl, DW (especially DW), Yamaha, etc and I was blown away with the quality
Hallahh sgala klaguan pake drum Tama lu .. 😞 biasa nabuh Bedug Mushollah aja lu or Tam Tam beli dipasar gembrong ..
I started playing in ‘79 and stopped in ‘92 due to selling one kit and then donating my second kit to a Middle School in the School District I worked for as a Nurse. Now I have no room but I saw Sonor in the Eighties and was WOWED then.
Thanks to You Tube and great reviewers like Nick I see how AWESOME Sonor is. I’m starting back with stick work both Traditional and Match Grip.........feel like a newborn. Been dreaming of being able to have room and DREAMING of being able to play a Vintage Series kit. I would have to rob a bank to own one, but a boy can always dream.....................WOW! Atta boy Sweetwater......attaboy Nick......attaboy Sonor.
The most BEAUTIFUL drum set available today (in my opinion). Owning this set is high on my "bucket list". Sounds great and looks great and it's light & easy to carry to gigs. THE PERFECT DRUM SET!!!
hello Eulypion...I can tell you first hand that you are absolutely correct !! I purchased this kit right before Christmas, in the vintage onyx finish. I have added to it since, picking up the 14 x 12 floor tom as well. It is well worth every penny that I spent....not only is it beautiful to look at, but the sound of these beech shells is pure delight to the ears !! Add it to your bucket list for sure, you will not be sorry !! Take care
Those are the most beautiful drums I've ever seen. I was surprised to see the intro with such modern music, since I would think these would be great for jazz, blues, and old R & B.
I have a 1980's Sonor Phonic series. Beechwood shells. They are the perfect mix between maple and birch. Almost pre-eq'd. The hardware Sonor makes is some of the most sturdy, over-engineered hardware out there. Great tone. The rounded bearing edges sound very full and deep.
This one or Ludwig classic maple?
Beautiful drums! I like the rounded bearing edges and classy lugs.
Wow! What pleasant surprise. Those round over bearing edges really make a difference. Good on Sonor for trying something different.
This kit brought out Nick's best playing!
Jesus, Nick is so good. I know he’s great, but every time I watch him, he just blows me away.
Funny you mentioned Jesus - I just had an incredible talk with Him today!!! Not a joke - He's even more beautiful than these awesome drums!
Very powerful, Nic also has the heavy fast chops....Quality Bach, Einstein and Sonor!
"Sonar". Haha 😂 Great presentation by Nick as usual.
I hate it when people pronounce S0N0R as ‘sonar’...
Nick is the best demo guy of all time!🏆🥇👍🏻🙂
oh my, i miss watching Nick's demos... im outta the drum bus. but i love these
beautiful sounding drums, beautiful finish, great drummer.
Gorgeous looking kit. One of the best I've ever seen :O
Definitely has that vintage sound with the Calftone heads. Makes me want to consider trying this out on my Gretsch Renown.
Nick, you always present the most excellent videos ! And as always, FANTASTIC playing.
You do an excellent job reviewing drums!
Amazing sounding drums! The snare has an impressive crack considering the bearing edges.
Connie Kay the drummer for the modern jazz quartet played a sonor kit, it might have been a phonic set. Great video, thanks
What a BEAUTIFUL kit!!! For those that don't know the story of SONAR drums, check out their documentary here on TH-cam. There's reasons why SONAR sounds as beautiful as they look. 🤘🏼❤🥁🥁🥁❤🤘🏼
I'm planning to buy a drumkit with my 65 years now. I started with a SONOR kid in 1970, which looked like this, but sounded not so good ;-)))). So of course I fell in love with this kit - the circle will close now. But I couldn't find a good video - Steve Smith made a solo...what for???? To show again, that he is a good drummer? This vid gave me finally the informations which I looked for. Thanks Nick for helping me to fall in love again!!! Uwe from GER (Sonor's home)
Dang... Nick is killing it...
Awesome playing Nick. Love that intro music. I think playing jazz too would have suited the target market.
This is a very versatile, great sounding kit.
Great demonstraition of these great drums.
I would like you to talk us through a complete kit set up miked to through a Yamaha equaliser and a 1500watt out put system thanks Chris Australia.
Great sounding and looking
Very old school.
Best drum reviews ever .... Thanks Nick
Love Nick demos and these Sonor vintage series caught my eye so was ecstatic to see there was a Sweetwater demo with Nick at the helm. I think it is said as "So-nore" though (like more but with an N instead).
Look and sound phenomenal.
For some reason I thought sonor drums were on the low end of quality. Not the case with this shell pack. They sound and look great. That finish looks super high quality.
ZildjianGuy Man Every brand now has higher end kits and lower end ones. But when I was growing up in the 80’s Sonor was the super expensive high end brand no high school kid could afford. Like BMW, Audi and Mercedes.
Great playing man!! Good reviews and excellent skills!
They sound great just like any well made drum with the same heads and tuning would sound.
just how sick is that kick
Great drums in a great colour.
Hey, sounds great, would have enjoyed hearing the 13' rack a bit lower, but the Kick drum sounded AMAZING!!!
Beautiful kit
Snare sounds great
Amazing drum set and amazing drummer. What an amazing combination. My wallet will only allow me to drool over (not on) a set like this. I like the reality of immediately pulling the Remo heads and replacing them with the Evans heads. That really says a lot about who's who in the drum head world? Very good review. Best wishes!
Can u guys review a Tama starclassic BB hyperdrive kit. Or even a Tama starclassic bubinga kit. I don't recall u guys ever reviewing a Tama bubinga kit.
Gary Peterson of the Guess Who played Sonor Drums back in the early days of the band.
Nick, what custom in-ear monitors are you using now, and are you happy with them??? I'm due for an upgrade. Thanks.
Nick's drumming is just endlessly impressive. So tight and precise, occasionally flashy but always extremely musical and complementary to the song. Love the part at 0:50, I don't know if I've ever seen another drummer do something like that before.
cool track! great drumming!
That’s one sweet-lookin’ kit and dude, you got some kickin’ beats! 🤷🏻♂️🥁🍗😅
God does that kit sound great!
I love the sound and love the finish but I just can't get into the offset lugs - guess it's an acquired taste. Love the Sonor ProLite drums in blue and red tribal finishes.
LOL Appreciate as always Nick 's informative and helpful video. Comparing these to my 1967 Sonor 'vintage' drums: older set has 3 ply beech shells; chrome on older set is still in good shape especially die-cast rims which show few (if any) defects (guess we'll have to wait a while to see if the new drums do as well); Evans heads are good choice, Sonor used Evans heads in 1967 (with "drum mallet" logo); new stands look a bit sturdier than old, but I'm still using old stands and pedal with a practice set; "Tune-Safe" didn't exist in 1867, but lug & tension rod setup did stay in tune pretty well and slotted lugs could be tuned with a quarter if you forgot your key. Overall, there are advantages to the new set, but since I've played the original for almost 50 years, I think I'll stick with what I've got.
PS Originals cost $300 in 1969, another reason to keep playing.
The closing track was so well written. Not only rocked but such a tight Grove. Who wrote it? Is it Spock's beard or is it something that Sweetwater come's up with for you? I've gotta know Nick, can you please tell me!!!!!
Its Sonor so they like odd dimensions 😀 The snares for the Vintage are 5.75 × 14 and 6.5 x 14. Recently they added 7x 13 and 5 × 14 options
I absolutely love my custom Beech SQ2's! Would love to pick up a vintage series kit for gigs though.
Smooth. It was a tough choice between these and a Gretsch Broadkaster. I ultimately went with Gretsch for the finish options.
I agree on the finishes... I got the Sonor Vintage for the tone!
Nick Colantonio I prefer the broadcasters so to me you made the right choice! I played these and ah they are nice but I am a Gretsch die hard for a reason.
Monsterdrumma Potentially could be the name and legacy behind the drums. They're trusted, makes it easier for people to buy them.
How i can buy this drum set in Malaysia?
Oh man, that was great, but you should have been playing jazz grooves on that thing.
how am i not following sweetwatersound until now? what have i done all my life?
Sounds amazing!!
I wanna get a new kit, and im between craviotto, sonor, and gretsch
Great Review Nick :)
I have a random question , completely different theme, but maybe you Guys at Sweetwater or the Drumcomunity could give me an answer ... I have got some old Paiste cymbals layn arround and I want to know how much Money I could make with them ... ( Paiste Formula 602 15' Medium Hi-Hat -blue label-)
Otherwise I would keep them because they sound great:)
Greets from Germany ✌
Tobias Holtkamp i think those are pretty rare but maby I'm wrong #ilovezildijan
Tobias Holtkamp You could probably sell those 602 hats for about $280-$320 in the right market. I would keep them, since those are highly regarded cymbals from Paiste. Browse eBay to get an idea of prices.
Joe Rico thanks for your reply , I'll probably gonna keep them :)
Tobias I would tell you to keep them if your are still playing. They are very high end and are hard to beat...lol pun intended.. check them out on Wikipedia... oh and don't clean them with regular cymbal cleaner as they have a coating on them not found on other cymbals paiste has their own cleaner....
Quelle merveille cette Sonor vintage , rien à envier à Ludwig , le made in Germany dans tout ce que il a de bon
Shetts looks great
The Best!!!....these drums are singing.
In my opinion vintage is less loud than new drum-sets.
It applies to Ludwig, Premier and Sonor. Those I have tried both vintage and new sets of.
Wow nice kit dude.
Great drumming and great sound...
More for the big purse strings. $$
I want to eat those drums. They look like candy with a yummy creamy filling.
Dude, calm down
That sound is fantastic :)
Sounds boxy to me. I have the same kit and it sounds far better. No one seems to be able to tune Drums anymore.
Charlie Farran I think they sound really warm. Drum sound is completely personal. Not saying everyone knows how to tune, but these drums don't sound bad by any means, imo.
Kickin it Nicky! LOVE my Sonor's. 😇😇😇❤️❤️❤️🌟🌟🌟
Hello there, why do you switch the snare wires on and off when you are playing the toms and bass drum?
Raymond Pee to show the sound without snare, and with snare buzz
Wow. Amazing drums in every way.
This Sonor looks just beautiful and sounds incredible - especially the 20/12/14 Version in pearl white. I played it at Thomann/ germany and in two months it will be mine! Looking forward! :)
The ending song is in another video where he sings to show different vocal mics 👍
great drummer! What are these cymbals? which series?
Meinl Pure Alloy series. A german take on the Paiste alloy style.
Very good! thank you
Wtf dude your playing is pretty damn tasteful...
This guy's name should be Scooter. It fits his personality.
When I go to your website and filter by acoustic "Shell Packs" I see tons of results that have snare drums as well. That seems to contradict what you mentioned at the 6:00 minute mark. Wondering if you can help me with that? Otherwise, great demonstration!
Those roundover edges really do give you a nicely focused/dampened sound. Definitely no need for gels or rings.
But three grand? Geez! I can have a custom builder make a kit to these specs for half the money.
And for that price you get Keller shells and Chinese hardware.
@@kevinbothwell8425 Can't speak to the hardware, but there is NOTHING wrong with Keller shells.
@@MeTuLHeD oh no argument! I built my a Keller kit and love it. It just doesn’t hold a candle to a German sonor.
@@kevinbothwell8425 And that's where I must beg to differ agreeably. I worked for years for a boutique music store and have long been a recording studio owner. And I have heard many MANY drum sets through the years. Sonor included. And my custom built kit (made with Nordic shells) can hold it's own against any kit I have ever heard.
Very nice.
The problem with Nick doing drum demos is that he makes any drum kit sound fantastic… lol
Nick dv your a g! Keep it up :)
Put coated remo ambass on and watch them come to life.
They EVANS 56 heads look like they are white. Is that beause of the studio light or....? I´m asking 'casue I have the EVANS '56 heads on all my drums and they look more like the Remo Fiberskyn counterpart. Maybe anyone can help me out with this one....?
What a super performance. Bro...
Did he say 4 year long career playing drums?!
Damn he can play!
He's been playing since 1986. He said "40 year career" Check out his stuff with Spock's Beard 1992-2012
B K that is 30 years with Spock’s beard but not his whole career. Besides he estimated since I said he’s been active since 1986
you're an idiot BK he clearly stated 1992-2012 as in his time with Spock's Beard you dope!
The video was amazing as always but what do you make videos with the same heads... Why don't you make videos with coated pinstripes or Evans reso 7
Σταύρος Κωσταςς coated pinstripes kill the tone of quality drums. It's like cardboard.
Joe Rico thank you for your help, I really appreciate it, but I think coated pinstripes are the perfect heads for funk!
Σταύρος Κωσταςς I've always found with cheaper drums pinstripes are ok. With quality drums use an Emperor. You get more tone. Remember, the sound is all in the heads. The drum shell just allows the head to vibrate and make the sound in different manners according to shell material, thickness and the bearing edge.
Joe Rico thank you for your advice... I ll take all these in account!
Joe Rico Emperors are, indeed, sweet. I’ve found that I like the Evans G2s and EC2s even more, but you really can’t go wrong with any of them. I totally agree that Pinstripes will deaden the drums a lot. Some may call that “focusing” the sound, I suppose. Whatever sounds best to your ear, right?
Would this be good for rock cause that's more what I'm into
sure. it depends on how do you tune your kit, what heads... but ok, the Bass is a bit small for rock. 20" Bass is a really nice allrounder
I don't like that Sonor drilled a mount onto the rack tom.
+Rico Horton - Trust me that this tom mount does not keep these drums from resonating beautifully and singing with amazing tone! Ask me how I know?! 😆
FYI you can get the same type of mount on the Gretsch Broadkaster kits, and that is exactly what Mark Guiliana specifically ordered on his white satin flame Broadkaster kit. I don't think he would choose that mount if he thought it would compromise the sound. ;) Search YT for ''gretschdrumsusa Mark Guiliana Unboxed''.
I think that the problem here is that the Evans Calftone56 heads that Nick put on these drums was a bit of a mistake. These drums already have the vintage cut bearing edges, and the stock Remo Ambassadors make them sing. If anything, I would probably swap them for Remo's Diplomat Fiberskyn heads! Mmmmm!
bb foto that might be true that it does not effect resonance of the tom. But most drummers prefer no mount connected to the shell so believe Sonor may have hurt themselves here.
+Rico Horton
Well, this is Sonor's "Vintage Series" kit. Owners of real vintage drums such as Rogers, Slingerland, Gretsch, AND old Sonor's etc, all know that those vintage drums all had/have a similar mount attached to the "rack" tom shells, so I don't think they'll be bothered much by it. ;) If I saw any type of suspension-type mount on a new set of drums that were marketed as "vintage style" drums, I wouldn't quite take them seriously.
The bearing edges & type of heads used will account for MUCH more of a sonic difference than that shell mount. And placing that tom in a snare stand as Nick has here has WAY MORE potential to "suck the resonance" out of the shell than its own built-in side mount.
To each their own.
Nick is really dope
The Sweetwater "reviews", are not really reviews. It is great seeing and hearing the equivalent and Nick seems like a fair guy. However this is like letting a Chef review his/her own restaurant.
Me Hearing A single strike on the toms: ok lets go, we have to save some money
Hahahah
he says the same thing literally every video. "Great round tone. Great tone interval in between the toms. These drums are really cool and can be used for any style......I feel like he says nothing other than the obvious
good sound gooood
Ce son !!
Damn your good...
Seem a bit darker than maple. Anyone else think so?
Beech
Beechwood is not no where near as warm as maple they have a dark tone to them
Their tuning lug is a really nice thing and don't know WHY other companies haven't incorporated a comparable invention.
AND too bad Sweetwater has crappy customer service. Every time I have asked for a quote on drums, they have NEVER gotten back to me. I no longer even bother calling Sweetwater anymore.
Or Skippy.
