  • Imperium Horizons is a BIG entry point for this series, and maybe the best of the bunch, but is it for you? This review takes a look at the game, critiques it, and considers where you might be in your Imperium journey. Now let's jump in and talk about what this game does, how it does it, and give it a score.

    The patch cards are not sold separately because overwhelming majority of the changes are about integrating the new mechanisms of Horizons into the old decks and common cards where appropriate, and doing some fine tuning while we were at it. Classics and Legends were quite playable before this pack, with only two decks out of 16 teetering on the edge of too-weak/too-strong.

    • @EvanSawyer4
      @EvanSawyer4 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Right. Someone getting the patch cards without Horizons (say from someone who gets horizons with no intentions of ever getting C/L), will lack the goods tokens.

      Is there an errata on BGG if we want updated balanced factions but aren’t ready to buy Horizons yet? Perfectly willing to toss these errata’s cards when I finally do buy Horizons

    Thanks for taking the time to look into Imperium Horizons. The trader civilisations need the trader expansion module because they have trading baked into their design. We tried to give a trader feel to the Carthaginians in Imperium Classics - but to go any further it needed more mechanisms, hence the trader module (and in the pack for Classics/Legends you mention we have some cards for Carthage to bring it more in line with the new traders).

    • @meeple
      @meeple  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I truly appreciate this design and all the hard work both of you put into your games.

  • @davidturczi5713
    @davidturczi5713 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

    If on your first play of the cultist deck you also had mental power to consider trade strategies, then you'd be doing a feat most of our testers couldn't pull off for a while. I still can't 😁. But try playing the Carthaginians or the Mauryans -- they are not trading decks, yet have a lot of reasons to want to interact with the trade routes when given the opportunity. 14:45
    And we spent a lot of effort (and fun) making the bots interact with you through the trade routes. You definitely should give it some chance...

    I have played Romans (Classics) twice with Horizons solo Practice mode rules. And it’s really great! ❤ Finally a deck builder where cards are used very creatively. 🤘 I can’t wait to try out other Classics and Legends decks, and I have a strong feeling that I will order Horizons soon 🙂
    At the moment it will be enough to explore decks in Practice mode. But how are other solo players feeling about Practice mode vs Horizons solo bot? What are pros and cons? Does competing against bot opens up a lot of new possibilities and things to try out with your deck?

    • @meeple
      @meeple  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Competing against no one and practicing is just that, practicing. You become familiar with the deck with no pressure except for time. Against the Ai they sort of play out their theme, but it's still very much a race through their deck and this applies pressure to your play. The AI has no hang us as far as developing and it banks a lot of points. You'll likely lose a couple times if you don't know how a particular deck works and that's probably a plus for the game overall.

    Osprey Games' inserts man... I know most publishers don't give second thought to inserts, but the pain after sleeving Undaunted and none of it fitting stock insert was a real pain. Seeing and hearing it's still an issue with this (esp being a newer release after first wave feedback) is just nuts. It's cheaper for us to pay extra few bucks for improved insert than finding a storage solution.

    Honestly, the fact they still have issues with the storage insert of the cards, given sleeving is almost a must due to the game genre and card stock quality, means I will give it a miss. Im not paying for something extra when a good box design could have solved these issues. Thanks for the informative review

    Great review and points! I recommend giving solo a try. It is very smooth once you get the rules down. I think this game just takes a few plays to understand the brilliance of the mechanics they incorporated. Agreed on the storage solution! i actually unsleeved the cards after having issues.

    Appreciate this review. I had heard of the first two Imperium games, but for some reason never really looked into them. Now, from watching another Horizons video, I just found out that this series is by David Turczi and Nigel Buckle, and I'm suddenly, extremely interested, and trying to watch everything I can. David is one of my top favorite designers, and I feel like their combo may become one of my favorite design teams, so had I noticed that before, I would have paid more attention from the beginning. I do like the idea of the trading module in this for that little bit of extra, positive player interaction, but I think I'll take your advice and start with Classics and then probably add this later. I do play a good amount of solo, so it would probably be worth it to get this eventually for the better solo cards, and more options.

    Imperium: X is a 1-2 player game. A masterpiece solo or with a fast player opponent to me. Ideally you and a friend dive deep togheter into this to try out factions.
    I see no reason to play many players (litterlly just adding extra playtime for 95%+ the same game).
    if you like history you will love the factions. The variation and replayablity is huge in big box like the new one. If you like solo boardgames Imperium: X is a must have.

    Great insight and review, as always 😁 I've nearly bought Classics and Legends so many times but I have always gone with other options, when Horizons came out I knew it was time .....I bought all 3 last week, I'm starting with Classics with the Horizons rule book, the steep learning curve is not an issue, looking forward to some asymmetric joy. I will be ditching all the inserts, absolutely rubbish for sleeved cards!

    Thanks Jeremy for your perspective!
    Like I would have done, you spent so much initial time with criticisms and caveats, but added: "with that being said, I still feel like this is a great game. It is one of my favorite card games of all time. It is right up there with some of the highest. . . . . As someone who plays solo, this is the ultimate."
    I can't agree more. There are so many caveats that I would tell others about this game (mainly because I don't want people to stumble into a miserable experience). But, even still, this game is so great if it fits one's gaming taste.
    Thanks again!

    we should notice that Osprey asks for a very high price and they didn't even bother to the design a decent inlay.
    Also while it's a very good game it overstays its welcome at least over 30min (if not 1hour!) and they doesnt seem to have streamlined the experience.

    • @meeple
      @meeple  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The tray does come up short for sure. I haven't played enough to make the call on it overstaying its welcome, but that can be a subjective thing depending on the player. (David)

    • @FalkFlak
      @FalkFlak 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We had 3-4 hr sessions with 4 players, often newcomers. Most didn't want to come back. We can judge everything as subjective but when in the end you're playing alone that doesn't fix things.
      At least here is a community pro tip for the Classic inlay:
      You can cut the corners of the card sections, then you have "flaps" that open up and even hold the cards when sleaved, nicely.
