Especially considering you can create a composting toilet using a 5 gallon buckets and not even need a diverter if you use expandable pine pellets from tractor supply stores and its dirt cheap. Or just bags which is convenient on the road. In a homestead off grid setting id 100% do composting though, just not $250 to do it.
i use a squirt of hand sanitizer and a dribble of liquid laundry detergent, both of which i carry anyway, for a half gallon pee bottle. kills the smell too.
How about not even using a pee bottle and just using horse pellets / pine pellets ? If it can dehydrate a 1200 lbs animal's waste almost instantly, It would probably work for a human as well.
My biggest beef with Boxio is that it is not smooth on the outside, that thing is going to be a nightmare to clean on the outside. It's not a quick swipe, you have to clean out all those little nooks and crannies and edges. Just say no.
Try the horse pellets / pine pellets along with the bucket and bag. It dries everything out, there is no smell, your van wont be a biohazard like ALL VEHICLES with a "composting " toilet that doesn't compost anything.
I used a Reliance hassock for a couple years. Being a female, I got tired of needing to switch out for urine or solids. I researched and came upon the Trelino Evo. It wasn't cheap but everything just “works”. Separation is spot-on. Emptying and any occasional cleaning is a breeze. The fit and finish shows that they really thought out all aspects when designing. AND it has a soft close lid! I am extremely pleased with the purchase. Inside it, I use pine hamster bedding. It is easy to find and cheap. When solids are surrounded with it, there are no smells.
I have a Trelino also. It was expensive, but a simple system and VERY well made. Sturdy. I bought the tall one with the wooden lid and love it! Highly recommend!
I love my Trelino EVO I’m in a class C and I pulled the flush toilet out and replaced it with the Trelino. As a senior female with bladder issues, this toilet is great for me and easy to use and clean. I wipe the urine area with TP and vinegar
Exactly. Who needs all the expensive gimmicky stuff anyway? I think some people who are new to the lifestyle make things too complicated and tend to get sucked into all that stuff. Eventually, they will get tired of losing money/time and learn the easier ways.
Since I'm nearing my 70's I think I'll pass on doing a deep squat to sit on a milk crate....I could do it, but I would need somebody to help get me up! Knees don't appreciate squatting at my age!
I think it's a "use it or lose it" type of thing, plenty of 70 year olds on the planet can hang out in the deep squat, but they've been doing it their whole lives. I guess that's motivation for me to keep squatting.
yeah, 8 years on the road in my van and i just can't see what use a composting toilet is for this lifestyle. where are you going to dump the bucket? a dumpster, i assume, since vanlife doesn't come with a garden plot. so what's the point?
I have the boxio... I've had it for over a year and I love it. Bob, you didn't look at the directions... It tells you how to tie the lid on. You didn't do it right. I liked the bucket method too, but I prefer to separate. I never get poop on it. It's very easy to keep clean. And I have no problem with odors because I keep it clean. I spray the diverter down regularly with vinegar and wipe it down. I use dish soap to clean the pee jug and occasionally use a little bleach to rinse through it for heavy cleaning. For the litter, I like to use crushed up pellet bedding that I get from tractor supply. Works great for me. I do not compost it. I just throw it in the trash (and use cheap small trash bags in the "pooper")... As you would a baby diaper or a dog poop bag. I bought it because it was the cheapest. Works great in our camper and for a middle of the night run in my bedroom. Yes the more expensive ones are better but this is sufficient.
The TRELINO composting toilet is well made, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to clean for $375. I love it and use it in my mini van. It is a major improvement over the Boxio! I am just a camping and traveling grandma with no ties to TRELINO, so I’m just sharing what works for me. There is not a better one in that price range that I have found and believe me, I have tried several and it’s a big step up from the “bucket” for us gals!
I used a Trelino last summer in my popup camper. I mostly avoided using it for pooping, but urinating into it during the night was a huge improvement for me over the bucket system. The Trelino seems a bit better built than the Boxio you demonstrated, has a slow-close hinged lid and held up to my large self. The urine container needs to be dumped after a couple days, or you get a spare one. I use a spray bottle of vinegar/ water to spray the chute before and after urinating, keeps the odor down and makes eventual cleaning easier. I have coconut coir as a medium but as I said, I haven't used that yet. Pit toilets are my camp go to. Prior to this I used a bucket system with cat litter. Mixing both feces and urine creates smell quickly, requiring a frequent bag change. The height of these are a challenge, so the Boxio extension seems to help. My popup has a storage shelf that makes the elevation work for urinating, but I use a folding step for it when sitting is required. Gloves and disinfecting Clorox wipes round out my system.
Hey Bob, I just went through the selection and purchase process myself for my composting toilet. By far the best value and design I've seen is the Joolca Gotta Go. At $279, it's a great value and so much better than these "milk crate" type setups. It has a separate tank for #2 that you close off with a valve. It can also be used like a traditional RV toilet with chemicals by purchasing a separate tank. They are interchangeable. You'd be doing your viewers a service by reviewing that one. 👍
I chose to get the Boxio for the form factor, and bag up every occurrence. The bolts that support the seat come loose repeatedly. I have taken to using Locktite to keep them on. The lid does not need to be tied on.
I use pine pellets for cat liter. Urine dissolves the pellets with no scent. Light compared to used kiter. Super cheap at Home Depot (40 lbs under 8$). Wonder if it could be used for that?
I saw one nomad not too long ago using the five-gallon bucket, but he had bought his own diverter. I wish I knew who it was, can't remember that, but I can remember the diverter was only $45. And he used coconut core for the medium. So he really just made his own composting toilet, and that seems like a great way to have both your composting toilet AND (most of) your money!
I bought a similar device, Bob, and you hit the nail on the head. A lot of pee smell and poop cleaning involved. I'm getting the bucket. What a waste of $600!
Spray a mixture of white vinegar and water ( about 1:3) on the urine receiver after each use. It'll stay clean and fresh. The real value of a urine diverter toilet is that it reduces odor because it keeps the liquid waste apart from the solid waste. No meaningful composting is involved, in my opinion. Our Trelino "composting" toilet is a bit more expensive than the Boxio, it is much better made, and is very solid. My wife uses it; I maintain it. It is a good unit for our purposes. Happy trails!
My recommendation is a collapsible toilet (called Ann Katy toilet on Amazon). Costs about the same as those seats for the bucket. Same strategy as the bucket, only more comfortable and space saving 🙂
Saw some folks who had a $1,000 composting (dry) toilet who only cleaned out the poop bucket once a month. It had a fancy crank that you turned after each deposit and a fan with a hose to the outside. Everybody I've seen with a similar toilet all say the urine bottle is WAY too small. Some folks who have gray tanks, plumb the pee to go directly. A self built system seems more manageable and I struggle to see how to spend more than $100 even using the fanciest parts. I'm a girl and I use a pee jar and bucket system. We use a board with a toilet seat on it, bags and animal bedding. We're only occasional van campers so we might change things if we go out for longer. Last gardening season, I found small "bricks" of coconut core that would make an excellent medium at the Dollar Tree. They're about the size of a tablet and puff up to the size of an actual brick after soaking in some water. I know they also make just the diverter and I've seen someone make a urine funnel for their bucket system. I think they just used a laundry jug to keep it in. That way no one can see when you take it somewhere to dump.
I've used a Nature's Head for 8 yrs and honestly, I use it like a bucket system. I don't like it and will be building a real bucket system for my tiny. I have also found that pine pellet animal pet bedding is the best for the cover/flush. Usually about $14.00 at feed stores.
Had been considering this. Use it for my cat litter! $6 and change for 50 pounds! (Get it from Tractor supply) Works great for my cat, bag lasts well over a month. Was considering it for human use, lol! But whats the best way so it doesn’t leak or get stinky? Sprinkle the litter in, do your unseparated business, the sprinkle more pine pellets ? Would it get, um, water logged? No free plastic bags here, would have to buy garbage bags or zip lock bags, preferably something leak proof! Thank you!
Bought one last summer and have only used on a few overnights in my van. Wish I would of seen your video before purchasing. Have a big grip about the clips and wrote the CO about it. Basically just got a we know about the problem but no solution response. Other than that it has worked OK so far but not sure I would buy again especially after your video.
Recommend everyone use ANSI/NSF Standard 41 when discussing these toilets. Would you please address the disposal of your sewage bag vs. liquid-separating toilet pee container and poo bag. Your bag in a can is sewage (liquid-saturated waste system), and you must dispose in a public toilet or dump station. The liquid-separating toilet is a non-liquid saturated system. We would rather dispose of the urine in a public toilet than dealing with the sewage. We dispose of the poo bag in accordance with local ordinances. Our toilet is the Trevino Evo-L, and we are happy with the design, construction, and usability. We’ve been using the Trelino for over a year. Thanks for sharing your Boxio experience.
Thank you for, honestly, mentioning that you use just a 5-gallon bucket with a trash can liner. I've been using that method for over 10 years now. I know there are a ton of expensive and gimmicky stuff out there being sold to campers, hikers, van dwellers, etc. My sincere opinion is that 90% of it is just a waste of money, I mean seriously. A bucket with a lid, a 3-month supply of trash bags (I use the black Hefty stretchy ones with the drawstrings) and I 3 month supply of medium (I use peat moss) will run you only $30-35. Trust me, skip the fuss, extra work and save your money and just use a bucket with trash bags, that's all you need. If you REALLY had to have something like this, it wouldn't be too difficult to make something similar at the slightest fraction of the cost. If you just have way more money than you can handle and need to spend it on whatever, then by all means, by all the gimmicky stuff, but it's really not necessary at all. **EDIT: Just to expand on separating the poop from the urine for a minute. Men can just urinate anywhere that's convenient, no problem. Women can just urinate in a second bucket, then dump it out wherever and rinse it out at your convenience. Now, I will say, there are plenty of cases when I don't need to urinate, UNTIL I sit down to go poop, but guess what? I little urine in the poop bucket occasionally doesn't hurt a thing, as long as you're not peeing in your poop bucket several times a day. Just do what Bob says and put a couple scoops of medium into your bucket and COVER your waste with a layer of medium each time you go and you're golden. A minimal bit of urine will not matter. Trust me, been doing it for years now, it's really not that complicated.
Been living on wheels for 9 years. What I've found the best is what I have now. On Amazon they sell a "waterless" urinal. I routed that into my grey tank. I have a wooden box (the size of a bucket) that I #2 in and cover with a medium. Hope this helps!
If I had that kind of money for a top-end composting toilet, I'd spend 3X more to get a incinerator toilet (like Cinderella) instead and be done with the mess indefinitely. "Buy once, cry once" as they ARE expensive, but it's the cleanest way to go (!) and no hassle to dispose of & no harm to the environment as well. -- BR
It would be better if the urine container was not see through. Just a little window to see when it’s full. I don’t like visibly carrying a pee bottle into a public toilet
Why would you need to just walk in with the container in your hand? You can use a plastic grocery bag to carry it and then put that bag into the trash can in the restroom if you wish to do so.
A five gallon bucket with bags a large car funnel adapted to the front end of the bucket with tubing into a jug in a wooden box makes a good composting potty with Peatmoss and no smell
The best thing to use in these toilets is horse stall pellets. They are made for absorbing poop and pee. A 40 pound bag is under 10 bucks and will last you a long time. I used them for many years for my horses stalls and while camping with the horses a friends discovered they were perfect for her composting toilet in her horse trailer. Now I see people using them all the time. Give them a try they are perfect for this.
I compared the boxio and the Joolca toilet as they were in same price range, boy I'm glad I went with the Joolca Gotta Go. I wanted something that looked and felt like a regular toilet that I did not have to empty every day. I still made some alterations - like sticking a silicone funnel in the urine diverter (easier to clean and less splash) and I made some paper liners to use for the poo area so I did not need to clean it as the hole is kinda small. The height is perfect, seat is comfy, and I like the gauges that tell you when containers are full. There is also a sliding door that closes off the poop side. You get a lot for your money with the Joolca and I can see not much will go wrong with it.
I use small animal pelletized absorbant bedding. Sold at tractor supply. It's highly absorbant and knocks odor right out. No need to separate poop and urine. The pellets absorb all liquid. Bucket and bag for win.
I have a flushable portable toilet but having to clean out the bottom part is a bit awkward and physically challenging. So I just use medium trash can liners in the top part. It just works easier for me to change out the liner each day. I got a patio deck box and set it on its side. The toilet almost fit perfectly and just used a hot needle knife to ever so slightly widen the opening so it can slide in easily. I added a thin slab of wood to the bottom for a level surface. I slide the toilet inside and clip the deckbox door closed with heavy rubber bungee cords that also secure the box to a wall. Also i made another smaller slab of wood with casters on it. It its perfectly on top of the toilet inside the box when not in use. I slide the toilet out onto it and move it to a good position for use. Being as old as I am and female you dont always have the luxury of going #1 and then #2 after. Sometimes its all at once so yes there can be odor. But the deckbox helps hide it and after use either air freshener spray or even better alittle incense and an open window takes care of that. Its a fairly comfortable height for my bad knees. And whenever I change the liner i clean the toilet and the inside of the lid and seat anyway just to cut down on any surface odor buildup. Also I covered the outside of the deckbox with some nice stickon tile and decor. It looks nice and adds alittle extra temporary counter space. I think altogether between the toilet and the deckbox and wood slabs and casters it maybe cost me about $150. It has worked out very well for me. I have an ambulance motorhome so maybe in a low roof vehicle it wont work but if you have the height to work with it could be a solution. Also being a bit full figured a round bucket just doesnt give me the needed seatsize and space to clean up properly.
The OGO Nomad works well for us (1 guy, 1 woman) when we are living on the road. For $199, it's well-built and the bag covers everything it needs to! At our off-grid home, we have the $1000 Nature's Head, which, when compared to an $18k septic system, was a steal. It also works perfectly, but needs that vented fan. Thanks for the review. We thought about a Boxio, but are glad we went with the OGO.😀
I have never heard of a camp ground specifically requiring a “composting” toilet. I do know the BLM LTVA areas require being self contained unless camped near a vault toilet if there is a vault toilet at that LTVA. The BLM LTVAs do not consider a composting toilet to be self contained. Self contained means at least 10 gallon total of waste water holding tanks for grey and black water.
Thanks. Good info. I used a C-Head on a sailboat. It was bigger but still sometimes had issues with splatter. Basically I got it for my wife. It needed a deep clean about every 5 or 6 weeks. My current sailboat has a lovely bucket in a wooden box and it does the job.
You can easily compost using 5 gallon buckets and expandable pine pellet bedding from Tractor Supply which is dirt cheap 8 bucks gets you a 40 pound bag. You dont need a diverter, you just lightly cover your mess with the pine pellets which makes everything smell way better ( like pine ) and when the bucket fills up you simply put a lid on it and set the bucket out in shed or a yard, wherever.. After 4-6 months it breaks down a lot and you simply do this cycling buckets and the cleaning is very minimal.. If youre off grid at your own homestead bags dont make as much sense, but on the road certainly the bag method is great... I saw the 5 gallon composting technique on Off Grid With Doug and Stacey and you can buy 20 buckets for less than half the price of this composting toilet.
Quick question?? How and where does everyone dispose of there waste?? Waste station, gas station trash cans,,? If you bury it,,where do you dispose of the plastic bag?
Trash cans, usually at the gas station. The way I see it people do the same thing with dog poop or baby diapers. Just make sure to double bag and tie it good so it doesn’t rip and use pine pellets inside to mask the smell as much as possible
Good question, I’m curious what nomads do. I do occasional vehicle camping and when I use my toilet (usually I do not), I normally put the poop bag in my regular trash bag and dump it when I stop at a gas station or McDs. The poop bag, if done right, really is not bad and there is no odor, at least no worse than what’s in a normal outside trash bin.
Very happy with my Trobolo composting toilet. Only $200. Pretty much the same design as the $375 Trelino. It has a nice leakproof cap for the urine container and fits nicely under my front bunks in my Scamp.
I got a sunmar gtg and it’s awesome. Very compact and it’s vented. Gotta have it vented. I use seed starter mix as the medium found at all big box stores. I also carry one brick of coco coir just encase I run out of seed starter.
Appreciate the review! I'd only choose a composting toilet system if I have a place to put the composting materials. Since I don't, I'll stick with a version of bucket, bottles, and bags.
We use a foldable toilet. bought on Temu $18, works well, about 14 inches tall, and 12 inch width/depth, came with bags and a carry case. Easy to clean and breakdown/set up. Also it is better for your elimination if you squat deeper/lower, less stress on your colon, heart etc.
Great video, Bob. As far as I can tell, the only advantage the Boxio has over a DIY separating toilet (plywood box, toilet seat, bucket, pee bottle, bags and medium) is that you don't have to build the box yourself. For those of us who have the skills/desire to build our own, this looks like a complete waste of money. I use pine pellets and biodegradable bags, so my waste products will break down in the landfill anyway. The Boxio isn't doing anything special, and its '1989 frat house' aesthetic does not spark joy in me. I'll pass on this one, thank you.
Really?? I'm Sure a lot of Nomads could somewhat copy this toilet in a hurry and it would work just as well or better with a little ridge separation to use a quality bag in the poop area or even over the whole top with a little hole in the bag pushed into the hole of the pee side. The quality of the flipping lid is so poor the wind could blow it open if it is used behind a bush! Thanks Bob for being the one to warn us. We appreciate your honest opinions. See you on your next video.
I've used a bucket/bag/sawdust system in a desert homestead cabin for a few years. The seat lids snap off fairly easily but still function. Bags for in the trash, no worries. If I owned the property, I'd compost a la Humanure book.
I bought a foldable travel toilet on Amazon for around $35 . Looks similar to this one except it doesn't have the diverter. Waste goes into a small trash can. They make compostable bags and you just throw some compost medium, such as saw dust, wood shavings, etc. Either bury or throw in dumpster. A lot easier to maintain than always having to find a dump station, water, dragging out the stinky slinky, making a mess (yuk) , etc. Im renovating my little 21ft class c and took out my toilet because it wouldn't stop smelling. I found out that the toilet that came with it had been "secretly " recalled and i contacted them. They actually sent me an upgraded dometic toilet for free and i still have it here in the box because im not sure that i want to use it anymore. I like the portable toilet. Not sure if i should sell it or put it in the rv. My bathroom is obviously very small and i have more room in there if i keep the portable one in the shower area instead of the floor space. What would y'all do?
This product is priced 3 times what it's worth. Even at $49.99 plus tax, it would be just a matter of time before investing in something else. Maybe in the ballpark of half the $250 price, if even that, it might be worth it, IF it came with a stainless steel diverter and something wider and deeper than that small box at the back, and a better height would help. Add to that a couple of decent rings to attach the lid (Seriously, frayed paracord looks so cheap and probably the first clue the rest of the product is too).
For those who are using the "bucket," find a farm store, go to the horse section. There is a product called PZD. It is a horse stall deodorizer and controls odor. A 1/4 cup will keep your bucket smelling sweet.
i have the boxio. it works just fine as a separating toilet. it’s easy enough to clean. easier to clean than my home toilet. my decision on the boxio was to replace a theyford 135 and its existing space. i made a platform riser of sorts to set it on and has a 17” seat height. the space under the boxio is storage . i also have a five gallon bucket with gama lid as a waste storage receptacle. ymmv
I have one in my truck shell camper, and it has its place in my configuration, although I will say it is an acquired taste. My wife loves it, and she has no problems with the separator. It is 11 inches tall, which is a milk crate height, so I have the extension which puts it at roughly toilet height, which works okay for me. I want to say, though, although the string is not my favorite part of the assembly, there is a definite way that it has to be placed on the toilet, and there are directions, which Bob missed. That aside, I understand the frustration, and to me, a couple of plastic ties from Harbor Frieght will suffice 🙂. To each his own, gets the job done lol!
I recently saw a video on this Boxio. It's an expensive hunk of cheap plastic. The price to poop is ridicldockle. Thank you for all your helpful videos 🎉
We made our own urine diverter out of fiberglass for our 5 gallon bucket system. Double 13 gallon bags with cedar shavings. We built an airtight box for the system. Works great, no odor, very cheap. Need building skills though
When I use a public restroom I will use the urinal at least 19 times out of 20 when I go in. I will be building a box truck into a living space about a year from now and I am contemplating installing a cheap plastic urinal without dedicating space to a toilet. And for a toilet I will be using the collapsible toilets which are the bucket which when rotated collapses down into the shape of a large frisbee (a good one will sell for $30). Currently for #1 on camping trips I have an empty laundry detergent bottle (which was yellow so it's my yellow tank). I have seen a car campers channel where he admitted to using a large lemonade bottle for this purpose. Men don't need to buy the cheap purpose built urinal containers. For women Amazon sells female urinals for under $20 and they can easily be emptied into a larger yellow tank. There is no reason nomads should be spending $1,000 on a urine diverting toilet.
The prices on these things leave me completely unhinged...lol 😅😂I have learned that replacing a 1977 RV toilet is exuberantly expensive, fortunately I think I can replace just a gasket otherwise, The bucket list...😮😅😂🎉❤
Cra***est episode ever! 😆 But seriously, the cost of that mediocre pile of plastic is pathetic. I'll bet China would offer something equal to that for closer to twenty bucks at the dollar store if it weren't a niche product. I was thinking milk crate before you said it. If I wanted to fabricate such a device it would not be a great challenge, though I am chiefly in agreement with you about the need for one. Good report sir.
Well, I have been living like a van dweller in my house for a long time unfortunately because I’m a mess, water issues, and what not, so I started using the bucket And the bucket for number two is just fine. You keep it covered. It doesn’t really stink. No maybe I’m immune to it. A little we do get used to smells and odors that are not a threat to us. That’s how that sort of works. But I have a few thousand can liners, those dirt cheap 10 gallon garbage can bags that you buy a box of 1000 and I mean dirt cheap Two of them in a 5 gallon bucket works fine if you want a bigger bag or for a 7 gallon bucket you’re gonna need the 13 gallon size bags I use two of those cheap liners per use And let me tell you if you bought a box of 1000 of those I don’t care if your man or woman you would not use them all up in your lifetime ha ha, ha ha ha, ha ha Well, maybe 😝 As for toilet paper, I buy the Pom toilet paper at Sam’s Club Buy the case yes it’s 45 rolls or whatever it’s huge, split it with someone, a single guy like me the last case I bought before Covid because I’m not always home. I just bought another case it would last me for years most likely again. Yes, the fuck it may not be the most environmentally, friendly, and what not, but it’s simple effective no mess no cleanup just twist the thing together Thai you’re double knot, and you’re done, you pee elsswear most of the time or into your gallon jugs, it’s all very easy to do and it won’t cost you a fortune and you won’t have to fret about where to dump your black tank, I would never ever have an RV or a trailer and ever use a black tank ever ever ever They are disgusting and problematic and nasty and dirty. All you need is grey water and potable water.
I’m a 61 year old male and so fortunate to have the space where 2 buckets braced in a quick and easy place -one is for liquid and the other for solids. I do use coconut fiber that I buy to top off the solids. I urinate a lot so about every 2 weeks I’ll empty it out and every month I’ll empty out the solids.
You don't like to clean toilets, Bob, but I hope you cleaned that one before handling it after the test drive. Get Bucket-O! It comes with left over frosting from your grocer's bakery section, which takes a bit of work to get clean. Don't forget to ask for the lid. Clean it out, add plastic bags and a wide mouth plastic ice tea (pee) bottle. For optional shower there is Bottle-O. Use a couple of one liter plastic water bottles, heat up a knife blade and make a slit in one cap, change the cap over to the 2nd bottle when the first is empty. Bottle-O can also be used for hand washing. Save your $250 and have a complete bathroom. The luxury version uses a pool noodle for the rim and plastic table cloth for modesty from the dollar store. Cost: $3.75 including waste can liners. You're welcome!
A few years ago I found on Amazon an insert for a toilet chair that's used in nursing homes (?). It's maybe 2-1/2 or 3 gal in size. It's was a little low to the ground so I put it on top of a small plastic tote - perfect! Dollar store plastic container for #1. Cheap 4 gal bags, doubled, and kitty litter to capture the #2. These poo packages are stored in a Vittle Vault w/a gamma seal lid until disposal. I think the insert was $12.
I have done better with my 5 gallon home depot bucket and toilet seat with compostable trash bags and kitty litter. Plus, cleanup is quick and easy, and over the half year I've been a nomad, I've spent less than $100 on toilet and supplies.
You have to clean a toilet at home lol I think outside should be smoother for cleaning I wonder if you could put a bag over pack for cleaner backside of toilet I got this as soon as I many said smell not bad like a bucket , it is cheaply made for sure like a milk crate! I had to but the toilet lifter too, I put a big bag inside the whole toilet just in case as I had heard others say if they miss the separator it’s a huge mess! And does not contain any pee
The 5 gal bucket is so much better due to its high. I have a 34 inch inseam and am 5 foot, 10 inch tall. I have a bad knee too. So taller is better lol
Thanks for giving us a great review video, or should I say "crappy" review. I was a little worried you were going to give us a demo, thankfully you kept it clean (ha). Maybe a new nickname for you "bucket Bob". Even if you got a new bucket every month at $5 you would spend less in 4 years ($240) than buying the cheapest composting toilet. I mean who doesn't want a toilet bucket that says "lets do this" on it.
When it comes to poop, I don’t want enclosed spaces and lots of parts and crevices. I use a toilet seat (with open front to make it easy for pee, also has a lid so makes a good chair that doesnt look like toilet) on folding stainless steel legs, pooping into bag with cut up scrap paper pieces and sprayed a bit with vinegar. I can re-use the bag many times and the odor is minimal.
Bob- I just traded in my bucket for a Boxio. I tried making a separating container in my bucket and it kept coming off and I hated cleaning it every other time. 1- you didn’t use the para cord hinge correctly. It’s actually better than you displayed. 2- the urine always goes where I need it to go. 3- I don’t need the poop to build up more than that little tub. 4- it’s less obvious than a home depot bucket. 5- more comfortable too. I personally wish I had bought the “c-head” toilet a few years ago. (Owner passed away) It was the best separating toilet w/o the fuss nor the hefty price. Anyone with investment money should buy their license and re-make those.
It is so incredibly easy to make one of these-one that is better in every way. It's embarrassing that anyone would charge so much for this.
$250 for that is a rip off. But I appreciate the honest review.
It's over $450.00 in canada. Trashy.
***PSA to Nomads*** Borax 20 Mule in your pee bottle. 4 tbsp per gallon. No more smell!
For those of you who try this, you're welcome.
Tea tree oil works very well. A few drops and some water and a shake, poof, smells nice.
i use a squirt of hand sanitizer and a dribble of liquid laundry detergent, both of which i carry anyway, for a half gallon pee bottle. kills the smell too.
How about not even using a pee bottle and just using horse pellets / pine pellets ?
If it can dehydrate a 1200 lbs animal's waste almost instantly, It would probably work for a human as well.
PSA TO NOMADS.. FROM RETIRED TRUCK DRIVER... a quarter cup of fabulousso in the bottom of your gallon P jug and there won't be any smell...
Great tip, will keep that in mind, thanks!
My biggest beef with Boxio is that it is not smooth on the outside, that thing is going to be a nightmare to clean on the outside. It's not a quick swipe, you have to clean out all those little nooks and crannies and edges. Just say no.
Exactly! I don’t think it’s worth the money, I was disappointed when I got mine
I will go bucket n bag
Me too
I’m using a collapsible toilet, it cost about the same as that se seats for the bucket. Saves space but effectively works the same way (with liners).
@@Matt_on_life same here.
Me too. Works great!@@Matt_on_life
Try the horse pellets / pine pellets along with the bucket and bag. It dries everything out, there is no smell, your van wont be a biohazard like ALL VEHICLES with a "composting " toilet that doesn't compost anything.
"I don't want to clean poop off that. That's just not something I enjoy in life,"!!!! 😂😂😂 What an excellent start to a video!!!
Reliance Fold-to-Go is the way imo
That's the one I wanted but I couldn't afford it and had to settle for a boxio. The boxio is fine for me.
I love my Trelino EVO
I’m in a class C and I pulled the flush toilet out and replaced it with the Trelino.
As a senior female with bladder issues, this toilet is great for me and easy to use and clean. I wipe the urine area with TP and vinegar
I have the same toilet and I agree. I use Lysol wipes for occasional cleanup. I love my Trelino
We love you, Bob! You're a spectacularly genuine person. Entirely authentic. Amusing video. Bag-in-bucket for me.
The Jacool is normal height.
I think it's a "use it or lose it" type of thing, plenty of 70 year olds on the planet can hang out in the deep squat, but they've been doing it their whole lives. I guess that's motivation for me to keep squatting.
I’ll stick with my bucket
Bucket and trash bag is better, let them keep that lol
Easy breezy, gift wrap it, off to the dumpster 😊
Agreed. I made one out of a box. I find the diverter to be annoying, though.
yeah, 8 years on the road in my van and i just can't see what use a composting toilet is for this lifestyle. where are you going to dump the bucket? a dumpster, i assume, since vanlife doesn't come with a garden plot. so what's the point?
Thank you
"You should see the dorcor..." lol I laughed so hard! 😅
*doctor
My favorite line in this post 😅
So did I! 😂😂
Used my Trelino now for a couple of years and will never willingly go back to a bucket.
Cat litter, bucket and bag works for me.🙀
I use pine pellets for cat liter. Urine dissolves the pellets with no scent. Light compared to used kiter.
Super cheap at Home Depot (40 lbs under 8$).
Wonder if it could be used for that?
5-gallon bucket for the win!!!
I think i would use black zip ties for the lid.
Happy trails!
biodegradable bags + pine litter is a much simpler solution and nothing to clean but your butt!
Looks like an egg/milk crate with dollar store items. $250 dollars for $20 items 😂, waste.
Love the honesty.
I spray out my urine diverter every use. I would rather use a bucket with bags. Grocery bags are usually available 'free'.
Except in Colorado
If I had that kind of money for a top-end composting toilet, I'd spend 3X more to get a incinerator toilet (like Cinderella) instead and be done with the mess indefinitely. "Buy once, cry once" as they ARE expensive, but it's the cleanest way to go (!) and no hassle to dispose of & no harm to the environment as well.

I will keep my hassock potty thanks, $35. I love it!
I cant deal with the translucent pee containers.. I get why it's like that but as you suggested a little window would suffice..
I agree wholeheartedly with your comment! It is kinda embarrassing with the yellow bottle lol!
Only you can cover this topic so detailed and entertaining!
Have been using bucket/bags for over a year in my shed conversion. Love it! Glad I didn't 'splurge' on one of those expensive toilets.
Thank you for the honest review
I could see the “quality” as soon as you removed it from the box.
Thank You Bob, great review.🙏👍🇺🇲
Thanks for the honest review. I never understood the hype.
Also seems like joolca s better too, aesthetically too
I use small animal pelletized absorbant bedding.
The only plus I can see is that some Campgrounds require a Composting Toilet to be able to stay there.
Thanks Bob for an excellent review on this boxio composting toliet.
Great information Brother 😊
Thanks for the informative video Happy holidays❤
I use a bucket & bag. Simple. And i know my pooper is cleaner than any other toilet.
👍👍👍
Great review, Bob. Your way with words is magnificent!😊
Quick question?? How and where does everyone dispose of there waste?? Waste station, gas station trash cans,,? If you bury it,,where do you dispose of the plastic bag?
Dog bin.
I think there biodegradable bags to use in it. When you bury it, it will compost down. Probably expensive, I haven't checked.
Depends on location, some areas you can toss it into a dumpster other places have designated dumping spots
You can also buy a diy kit to make a 5 gallon bucket into a separating toilet.
This is my vote for video of the year, well done Bob 😂😂 I don't clean poop either. Bucket or bust! 🎉🎉
Bucket, pipe insulation foam, scented bags, bedding shavings. One laundry soap container(remove spout). Walla, done......
Do a vid of “slinging” in trash techniques w/plastic sack.
Yeah right?
I've used a bucket/bag/sawdust system in a desert homestead cabin for a few years. The seat lids snap off fairly easily but still function. Bags for in the trash, no worries. If I owned the property, I'd compost a la Humanure book.
😅😂 ur funny on some of these videos keep it up bob wonderful job
I’ll stay with my bucket system!
I have the Boxio sink and really like it. I wash dishes in it, brush teeth, hands, and prefer the running water over spray bottle.
Hello from Puerto Rico Bob and friends
Bob, thank you for the review. I was actually considering that exact toilet. 👍🏻
I recently saw a video on this Boxio. It's an expensive hunk of cheap plastic. The price to poop is ridicldockle.
Thank you for all your helpful videos 🎉
I got an ogo composting toilet for $200, no assembly required, absolutely love it . made in the USA. I call it a human litter box lol!!!!!
Only you could get my laughing over commodes. . . . I'll paint my 5 gal bucket gold.
We made our own urine diverter out of fiberglass for our 5 gallon bucket system. Double 13 gallon bags with cedar shavings. We built an airtight box for the system. Works great, no odor, very cheap. Need building skills though
Joolca has one out now that looks nice, you should get your hands on one and review it. Thanks for all you do Bob.
Tractor supply sells stable fodder for horse's? it's supposed to be really lightweight cheap and very absorbent I haven't tried it.
Thanks for the comic relief today...
“ I don’t wanna clean poop, that’s just one of those things I just don’t enjoy in life”. Agreed
Well, I have been living like a van dweller in my house for a long time unfortunately because I’m a mess, water issues, and what not, so I started using the bucket
And the bucket for number two is just fine. You keep it covered. It doesn’t really stink. No maybe I’m immune to it. A little we do get used to smells and odors that are not a threat to us. That’s how that sort of works.
But I have a few thousand can liners, those dirt cheap 10 gallon garbage can bags that you buy a box of 1000 and I mean dirt cheap
Two of them in a 5 gallon bucket works fine if you want a bigger bag or for a 7 gallon bucket you’re gonna need the 13 gallon size bags
I use two of those cheap liners per use
And let me tell you if you bought a box of 1000 of those I don’t care if your man or woman you would not use them all up in your lifetime ha ha, ha ha ha, ha ha
Well, maybe 😝
As for toilet paper, I buy the Pom toilet paper at Sam’s Club Buy the case yes it’s 45 rolls or whatever it’s huge, split it with someone, a single guy like me the last case I bought before Covid because I’m not always home. I just bought another case it would last me for years most likely again.
Yes, the fuck it may not be the most environmentally, friendly, and what not, but it’s simple effective no mess no cleanup just twist the thing together Thai you’re double knot, and you’re done, you pee elsswear most of the time or into your gallon jugs, it’s all very easy to do and it won’t cost you a fortune and you won’t have to fret about where to dump your black tank, I would never ever have an RV or a trailer and ever use a black tank ever ever ever
They are disgusting and problematic and nasty and dirty.
God Bless you, Bob! Most informative videos on the internet . . . splatters, Hahaha!
We bought a well made one just released by Jacool. Only $275. Excellent.
Great video Bob 👍
