We misspoke about the IR emitter. It's meant to blast a signal out to compatible devices like set-top boxes, soundbars, receivers, etc. This lets you voice control them all through Alexa so you can do a number of tasks hands-free like changing volume, power on/off, or set up full routines so a single voice command turns on the entire home theater system.
As an owner of the exact same TV, The "Game" mode came via an OTA update some time last month. I returned one of the TVs due to the same issue. There was also one problem where the power LED used to blink continuously and wont just shut up! Best bit the technicians from TCL came for the service.
@@samiraperi467 I also have a Sony ( an older model) with Android tv and Cromecast build in - i love it, SOny is not cheap, yes , but you actually getting a nice tv.
I tried it and it's actually not that bad. Yeah, the UI could use some work, but the most important thing is that we are all the universe experiencing itself. All separation is illusion. We are simultaneously the most remarkable and important things in the universe, and yet our limited lifetimes make our experiences both precious and meaningless. Nothing matters and everything matters. Just be kind to yourselves and each other.
@@richardroberson9277 make up your mind, am I listening or reading? My brain must not work as well as yours to shill for Amazon's shit product ripoffs.
"Why does it have so many 5 star reviews ?" Because Amazon star system is broken. 4 stars means "works slightly worse than expected", and 5 is "work as or slightly better than expected" You can only know if a product is terribly bad with this system. If it has 4 to 5 star average, then it lands somewhere between "it works" and "it's a revolution", but there is no way to tell
These days, I just ignore the star rating completely and skip right to reading the 3-star reviews first and see if I can notice any consistency in the complaints.
@@arnox4554 That's exactly what I do. Run through the low star reviews, ignore one offs and look for patterns that would be a deal breaker. It's a much better way to use the reviews.
@@130rne The ones are usually idiots who complain about the delivery service, or some other idiocy, or they don't leave a comment at all. Twos and threes are more valid. But often I end up discounting them because of one thing or another.
Are you sure it's a requirement or is that an assumption? Linus signed in but it could just be that the prime video is not available without doing so, or the "smart" features aren't available.
"What's next, a Kirkland Signature gaming PC?" Be careful Linus, that might just happen, given what we've seen from Walmart. Though i suspect a Costco built PC will be *slightly* better quality.
Funnily enough, Kirkland makes leather jackets apparently. Lol... I'd be embarrassed to say that I got a leather coat from Kirkland, the same company that makes my peanut butter. My leather jacket is thankfully not from Costco, I got it second hand from someone and is Luis Alvear brand.
@@shepjohnson2372 Oh definitely, I don't know how good it will be but it would probably be okay for the price. Would likely be loaded to the brim with bloatware, but that's nothing a simple reinstall can't fix. Their chocolate chip cookies are amazing, so I guess I should expect the same if they started building PCs.
My parents just bought 4 of these. 2 big ones and 2 middle sized. 75" and 55". The main reason is that they just bought a new house, my dad is slowly converting the entire thing into a smart house via Alexa. That's one of those Amazon specific features that you were talking about. He has smart switches/outlets/lightbulbs in nearly every room that can turn on and off via Alexa voice control. Also, he has a smart doorknob on the utility room since it is outside, it also reports to Alexa. Combined with his 2 ring doorbells and the security cameras that he's going to set up, he's going to have full view and control of the exterior of his house and full control on the interior as well. Another thing he did was run full home ethernet to each room in the house. All of the TVs are on it as well as his office equipment and all of his security cameras as well. They are power-over-ethernet. Needless to say, it is pretty cool to walk around the house and tell Alexa to do things.
Linus makes a good point. Anyone can rate anything whatever score they want. The problem is a lot of people either aren't objective in their reviewing (like in games, acknowledging problems is something most don't do), or they just don't have the background/technical knowledge to be accurate in a review. There's nothing WRONG with liking something, if you haven't seen or had anything better. But I think it's rather naive not to listen to someone with the proper knowledge who can tell you what the faults are, so that in your next upgrade, you know what to look for to get an improvement
You are right but for people who use Fire Sticks, this is what they see when they press the power button anyways. This TV probably is a decent value for the target audience, not people who are rolling with 30k in home theatre in their unfinished basement.
@@Squiesh I mean, on the brightness and colors side. Those are measurably awful. It's like people who buy 300 USD gaming headsets. You can get measurably better headphones for a third of the price. Yet people think they sound amazing because they have never used anything better, and either they know the brand, or some X streamer recommended it without knowing about audio
@@Squiesh Lol, no worries. Also nah, I've got a new pair of Sony IER-M9, they're about my 3rd favorite after Susvaras and og Orpheus (and I can afford neither)
Haven't watched the video yet, but I work at Best Buy and the Amazon TVs seriously concern me. They are hands down the lightest TVs we sell. I literally can pick the 50 inch model (box and all) with one hand *just gripping it from the top.* Weight doesn't necessarily correlate perfectly to quality, but I can't imagine one of these TVs would last very long.
maybe you've had some sweet gains bro. I kid, that is concerning for two reasons first is as you mentioned the durability isn't going to be great but secondly how many people are going to use the included legs with the TV and how easy it would be for a kid or a pet to knock it over and injure themselves on it.
@@anonymouskultist lol, I work in Product Flow (warehouse/back of store basically) and more or less lift TVs for a living, so maybe my standards are different, but they really are alarmingly light, and I think your concerns about them falling on pets or children are valid. It isn't an apples to apple comparison because of the class difference, but a 43" Sony X80J weighs 22.1 lbs. (10.02 kg) without the stand, while a 50" Amazon Omni Series weighs 20.8 lbs. (9.43 kg) without the stand. Even Best Buy's in-house brand, Insignia, is heavier at the same size, with a 50" F30 Series weighing 24.7 lbs. (11.2 kg). I dunno, I just feel like a 50" TV shouldn't be only marginally heavier than a 24 pack of beer. (And now having watched the video I feel like the beer is a better buy, tbh.)
When Linus was talking about the weird picture settings menu, I instantly remembered TCL from my TV sales manager days. They have a weird issue where if you're watching something and press the video settings button you get very limited settings unless you go into the settings menu then video settings and get all the options. Lo and behold, TCL.
That is EXACTLY how LG sets work!! You either use All Settings or Speaker to switch to a Bluetooth headset from TV Speaker since Speaker + Bluetooth is designed for Bluetooth Speakers and not headsets. Everything else is useless including the Gaming menu since you can not change any settings in it.
For a 75", $1100 isn't crazy, but also with what the TV comes with, It definitely belongs closer to $800 or $900. Which I'd imagine that might be what Amazon does after getting all the first buyers out of the way. Once the sales drop lower, they'll probably drop the price a bit more to keep selling it. Or at least that sounds logical in my head.
Yeah, or an item with no reviews and only 7 purchases. Do you want to be guinea pig for others or find something else. I was on their review program but was never offered anything I would actually use.
@ladawg81 1.1 million people watched this video. Even if only .5% of the viewers were dissuaded from buying this TV by Linus directly, that is still 5,500 consumers, and $5.5m dollars that Amazon will not make. I think you underestimate how many people come to LTT for purchase advice, and how much clout he has in the tech world.
@@joeykeilholz925 Apple TV beta race. It's a foot race, and all the competitors are lacking athletic ability. They are stumbling over each other's pear shaped bodies. It's a mess.
I’d like to see a comparison or scale when talking about colour accuracy and brightness. Similar to how you do your benchmarks. Would give us an idea of what is good at a certain price or technology
And now finding legit tutorials is going to be a hassel. Atleast TH-cam implement a system where misleading videos that has tons of dislikes are harder to find
A "small" note on that privacy part with the microphone kill switch at 11:25 : If a "physical switch" creates a software-popup, it ist most likely NOT a physical switch. Instead, it is likely just a slideable soft-button. The state of the button is read by the software, which then can act differently depending on the state of that switch. So you are still relying on the software not to spy on you, once you flip that switch. But once you buy a TV from Amazon, you are pretty much lost anyway in that regard.
It may be a software switch but a software pop has absolutely no indication if it is or not. Operating systems are designed to monitor what devices are physically connected. Plug or unplug any cable from any device and the software knows.
wtf is this shitty logic lol. If you physically unplug your webcam from your PC, windows is entirely capable of having a pop-up saying the webcam was disconnected
Linus: "The only question to answer before millions of you rush to buy one is..." At the same time: Linus: "Does it totally suck?" Me: "Is it worth it? ... Eh, close enough."
I just noticed that some of the spambot posts are copying other people's posts (like this post), presumably to make them look more legit. Very clever. Too bad youtube can't figure out how to ban them.
It's nice to have voice control for when you lose the remote. It's also great for accessibility. If you have difficulty handling a remote or if you drop your remote and can't physically get it.
When I saw this last week during the black friday sales, I still choose TCL for the kid's TV. I actually like the Fire stick as a cheap add-on to a plain old TV or monitor, but to have it (poorly) replace baseline TV functionality is a huge fail. Amazon's house brand would have to be significantly cheaper for me to put up with that crap, and TCL is already crazy affordable at the low end so good luck with that.
One thing I would love tv reviews to include (and this goes for ANYBODY reviewing a tv) is if you can set the tv to turn on and go right to an input or to go to the last input. I do not want a TV where I have to select an option on the TV's remote before I transition to the remote for the device I want to use (Cable box, Fire Stick, Xbox, etc....). This would also be good for people like me who use HDMI switchers because we have too many devices hooked up. My current TV has my sound bar on HDMI1 and on HDMI 2 is the switch with three consoles, BluRay player, wireless HDMI adapter and Fire Cube so I have no interest in ever touching the TV's remote unless it is to change a menu option.
Also would be nice to know how long it takes to start up. Every TV I ever owned started really quickly, like 'if they had had splash screens (they didn't) you wouldn't have had time to see them'' quickly, but my mother's current one has a noticeable delay before the brand splash screen comes up, and takes most of a minute between hitting the power button and actually showing whatever input it's getting. And that's from standby, not actually 'off'. That's kind of relevant when watching live... anything.
I don't use my inputs a lot so this may be inaccurate, but my Sony A8H will open whatever app was open when I shut the tv off. It runs Google tv so I'm not sure if that's a Google tv feature or a Sony feature.
My family had an Amazon Fire TV. They're terrible. After a power outage, or turning on in a long time, the TV would take almost an entire minute to turn on. And once it finally did, it would immediately show you all the Amazon apps and features... You know, instead of automatically switching to the one and only input that you have plugged-in. There were a bunch of other issues, too, like not being able to use your TV if your remote needed to be updated, and the fact that the picture adjust settings were buried through several different menus - And then partly covered the screen so you can't even see the adjustments you're making. It was very bad...
I've been using a 42' Fire TV for a few years now, and can't really say anything good about it. The main frustration is just the software. I find it constantly updating itself, restarting the TV, having huge lag spikes in the home screen... I literally only ever want to just see HDMI 1, but the software on my Fire TV does a really good job of making that as hard as possible
The Lag Spikes may be inadequate cooling. My parents and I used to use a Fire TV Stick with our Vizio M55, and it would just be stupid unresponsive after like, 20 or 30 minutes of use. Turns out, the TV was heating up and cooking the Fire Stick. So, after a year of beating our head against a wall. We just... stopped using the Fire Stick and went to Vizio's TV OS once it had all of the features of the Fire Stick we needed. Oh, and the Fire Stick we were using, wasn't even 4K Capable. So, we got a fidelity upgrade just from not using it.
If you only use the HDMI anyway can't you just disconnect it from the LAN/WiFi (no more updates or work for the CPU to spike on) That's what I did with my JVC TV then I added a smart switch to turn it off (now it's offline it turns on and goes straight to hdmi)
@@Skiptrac3 that is very interesting. My Vizio usually heats up too especially during the summer. Dont have a firestick but that makes sense that it would cook it.
Your Vizio M class review is what sold me on it. Bought it a month after the short circuit review and have been in bliss since. Going from a Samsung that was 1.5x more expensive, the Vizio is in a class of its own. Love you guys!!!
You know what I want? A modern TV with all of the HDR and other high image quality goodies that *isn't a smart TV.* But apparently wanting a functional appliance that isn't some IOT web connected "lets spy on you and *serve you more ads* " monstrosity means I am an out of touch tech boomer.
Basically what you have to do is buy a smart TV, and then never hook it up directly to the internet. Any internet connected thing would be via external device, such as a roku, apple tv, fireTV stick etc. etc... That's if the TV allows you to complete setup without connecting in the first place.
@@brycedunlap That's why I just use a home theater pc and a projector. The only real downside is the latency when it comes to gaming, but other than that I find that a decent projector ticks most of the boxes I would want out of a nice big screen. Since I do most of my gaming on a gaming PC in another room anyways, I don't have many latency issues to worry about, but gaming with a projector you notice the stacked input lag of controllers, the projector, and the game; which all might be minor on their own, but are fairly noticeable on things like fighting games. It's a great option for movies and tv however.
@@Atticore This is exactly what I do. I already have a laptop, and I got a projector for $130 (admittedly not the best projector, but it's better than just watching movies on my laptop screen). Why would I spend $300 on a big screen that I can't easily pack up? (I'm in the military and live in the barracks)
I guess you could use a monitor for that. But they're still only like 43 inch and cost like $2000. And their HDR still isn't quite as good as the good TV's.
Seriously! That’s why the monitor market is still so fresh to me - because it’s about the quality and complexity of the display as an extension to the device, rather than trying to be a device itself. But the convenience provided to the average consumer means that these “smart” trends will only get worse.
It's why I have no interest in "smart" TVs and just connect whatever I want to them. Whatever is built in will be obsolete within a couple of years and just dropped by the manufacturer as if it never existed, so save the trouble and just get a "dumb" TV instead. Which are annoyingly hard to find now...
The game mode thing is another giveaway that it's TCL. I had the exact same frustration until I found out about game mode on my TCL. One thing I like about my TCL is it doesn't suck as a smart TV. It's very responsive, probably because they let Roku handle that stuff. I'd expect this might be similar given the Fire Stick is well established.
Game mode is really weird on the C1 with my NVidia Shield, it seem you can change nothing, if you wanted to, and not and all as shown in his videos. I also notice that they ever explain any of the audio settings.
They have been selling the amazonbasics tv in India for the past 2 years i think. I bought one a few months back. Was a very competitive buy around 450$ i think. 50" 4k TV. I think the small dew drop item is an IR Transmitter and not a receiver to control a cable tv box
Does Linus have a list of good options for large 'dumb' TVs? I'd rather save my money by not having any apps or home screen features. I'd like a TV that just... displays the incoming video signal. lol
No, Linus only caters and considers rich Americans because they really do not live in the real world. They can afford all the tech they want so obviously the whole world can.
You can actually expect to spend MORE money if you want a dumb tv. Devices get cheaper because they can harvest user data and said data be sold to various data brokers, offsetting the loss any device might be sold at with more tech. To these companies we're all just labrat monkeys with money. We give them money for a product then they make us run the hamster wheel to sell that data off to the highest bidder if you ever choose to connect it to the internet and not block telemetry. It's a sad state of affairs.
We should all just not buy amazon branded stuff, its good to see them failing but unfortunately this fail is competing against other large companies, if only they would fail when they try to push out small companies with imitation products...
Amazon doesn't push out small companies with imitation products. That's been debunked. Every small company that claims Amazon stole their product were just flippers, not inventors. They were buying cheap white-label goods somewhere like Alibaba, slapping their logo on it, then reselling it on Amazon. There's nothing wrong with Amazon doing the same thing and undercutting them.
Good color accuracy in Movie mode for SDR content and acceptable input lag only in game mode? Even without Nicholas's postscript insert I'd suspect this is a TCL TV at its heart. That's pretty much exactly the verdict you guys had for their TVs back in the budget TV round-up / price challenge video with James last year. I bought a 43" 4k TCL Roku TV last year, primarily to use as my PC monitor. For the sub-$200 it cost at the time, it's perfectly fine. The 43" Omni TV is listed for $400 right now; I think that's a bit much for what it has to offer. At the very least, it shouldn't throw ads in your face like a $20 Fire tablet.
I mean you can buy the series 4 which is cheaper than the Omni, only Omni has is the free hands alexa. I myself bought one for my room since I didn't have a TV before and I would watch everything on my monitor.
Did they upgrade their camera again? Or just get better lighting? Linus @ 6:14 looks INCREDIBLY well defined, like "4K movie" sharp. Wonder if maybe TH-cam improved their compression or something, because it looks far better than usual
I wonder if the cable tester could also send a test signal to TV's on known good cables to verify compatibility claims of ports on cheaper tv's like these
Ya know I was about to get one of these for prime day (Amazon Omni Series 55" ) for 112$ tho I missed the sale and was kicking myself for it but honestly glad I did... I already have a 4 series 2021 TCL and it seems like the act same TV but with android amazon OS instead of roku... Instead I was able to buy a TCL QLED 5 series 2021 for 199$ and while I spend a bit more that seems like an actual upgrade from my old TV...
@@arnox4554 Don't know what that has to do with my comment. Just thought it was interesting that Costco is selling gaming PC's, in relation to him talking about a Kirkland branded gaming PC. I had no idea they were, and maybe other people don't. For the record, the person claimed they got it for $1,900.
As a rule of thumb if it's electronic never buy bargain or off brands. You'll avoid setting yourself up for failure. If it's plastic modeled, or non electric, buy bargain Everytime.
This is true. Specifically when it comes to medicine, by law they all have to meet the same FDA standards. Also I have a samsung TV and there's no ad's. I did disable the share info and kept my info private. Comes turned on by default. Perhaps that's why I don't get ad's.
I had an LG 43" with local dimming, which died, in part, so there were cool dark patches all over the screen, which also washed out reds. So I had to buy a cheap TV (it was in the play room where the kids mostly game or watch Disney+). My main criteria was the number of inputs as I can't be bothered teaching the kids how to change HDMI on a switcher. Seems 3 or less is the new norm when it comes to HDMI on smaller screens. Ended up with a budget @$470 JVC 50". No local dimming so less to fail on this budget TV. But its the same UI as your reviewed big TV. Have to say its not that bad, ok its not great but the kids had a hang of it in minutes. Plus the tiny remote has voice control. That all said if I was going for a $1000 TV I'd go for features and quality over size any day.
I have to say the Omni-series is honestly a good tv for it’s price and still beats other TVs even near that price range in all important keys for a good tv
Apparently people aren't aware that 'house brands' existed before Amazon Basics, and I guess think the actual "No Name" brand we have here in Canada should be illegal or something.
I have a Samsung Q6 from 2019 and love Samsungs menus and smart tv. It’s so easy to use and responsive. I don’t even need a cable box. I just have the app cable. It’s also pretty good for a tv gaming. It can natively do 1440p 120hz with like 8ms response time. I can actually play old games like mega man without that terrible lag making the game way harder than it already is.
Linus saying "A-l-e-x-a" to not trigger peoples wakewords, while meanwhile I'm living dangerously watching LTT videos with my wakeword set to "computer" 🙃
I’ll be honest, I got Walmarts onn 55 inch 4k tv with built in Roku and it’s amazing. Got it like almost 6 years ago for $150 and it’s been amazing. The color is great and it’s bright. I would recommend if you can get it for cheap. I got during Black Friday
I bought the Omni series 55 recently, and I'm very happy with it. It was on sale for black Friday, and I also have an amazon visa card. Throw in $100 worth of reward points and gift card dollars from a return... and I ended up spending only $500 for the TV, a wall mount, a drill, a wall shelf and brackets. And then after using the drill, and changing my mind about the wall shelf and brackets, I got $70 back. So, on top of only spending $440 for the TV and a very nice wall mount. I also, get to spread those payments out over 18 months. So, while there were better TVs, this one felt almost free. If it keeps me in the house a few Saturdays in the next year it will have already paid for itself. My only issue with the set so far is that I can't really get my echo speakers to couple with it for surround sound the way I can in the living room using the Fire TV cube.
I disagree with there being ANY reason to buy it for personal use. Most TV's that you referenced like the Vizio MQ6 are on sale, even the MQ7 is on sale for $100 less than the Amazon TV and it's just an outright better TV that has better software, better features, more dynamic coloring, and better response times. Even Samsung has their Crystal UHD TV line up that's a bit cheaper and performs better than it in both software and color dynamics. Some of the software features are nice for enterprise or office use, like the ability to join zoom calls in it. Throw one of these in a conference room once they're fully supported and they're quite competitive given it's feature set not being too high or too low. For normal every day use though, just stick with Vizio, Samsung, LG, or TCL.
At the same time you could argue that you’re better off saving a few bucks and getting an Apple TV with it and you can just share the laptop screen with zoom on it
We picked up a 65" TCL 6 series for around $900 back on Memorial Day and have loved it! Full array local dimming, HDR, 4k, Dolby vision, CRAZY bright, the works! Although I don't have the testing skills or tools that LTT does, I have been very impressed with the colors and performance, basically unbeatable for the price. Best Buy is still selling this unit, currently going for $999.
Yes but i find it difficult seeing how not only the hardware isn't the best but the software is bloated with garbage. Unfortunately Amazon is not the only one
Just spoke about this with coworkers. Maybe Amazon getting into tech and then department of defense when they get good. Specifically for Black Friday type deals
I own a fire tv for the bedroom and I do appreciate that it doesn't get too bright. However, comparing to my living-room screen, the differences, both in quality and brightness, are so dominant that you really start to wonder how you're being "OK" with the amazon tv.
@@sejpuV If you literally only care about watching stuff, then it should more than satisfy your needs. People buy "fully loaded" firesticks with apps that let them watch any movie or tv show they want for free. You can turn your TV into that as well if you just take 10 to 15 minutes out of your day to look up how to download that stuff. That is, if you're interested in that sort of stuff. I honestly can't even tell you the last time I paid to watch, well, anything.
@@sejpuV well i have a very cheap 55inch model for 300 bucks from black friday 2020. It's a typical cheap screen, colors are nothing to compare to a proper OLED display. But I don't feel like I wasted my money. I got a BIG SCREEN with inbuilt FireTV that's very light-weight (so perfectly wall mounted) that is not bright (which is a requirement for the bedroom). Because as awesome as my OLED is, my GF would get blinded on bright scenes in a dark bedroom. Like Linus said, however, there might be more quality screens out there for a similar price - this, however, requires a lot of knowledge and finding those things isn't something that just "anyone" (outside of the tech industry) can easily find.
Game mode boosting dark parts are good for competitive games, but I think that should either be a standalone setting or there should be a competitive game mode and a scenic game mode
Know what I want? A basic TV with no ads. No ad collection. No online service. No microphone. I got to wonder how much info Amazon collectes with this one. @LTT, you guys could offer a HUGE service by adding in what any of these devices collect from you as you use them, and where it is going. Not just TVs... ive seen home security systems that send video and images back to chinese companies that are not hosting services for the system.
This will piss off Amazon to the point they will just take llt designs like the screwdriver and backpack and do it cheaper and try to stick it to Linus that way. Amazon is the most petty company ever and will do anything to make a point. This video will definitely change some minds and hurt Amazon.
Amazon still promotes the idea that the earth is flat. I literally had an account banned for using the words "earth's curvature" since it would hurt sales of the fraudulent antennas they sell.
@@toriless Amazon is evil and the story I go back to was when this camera tripod company made a good product and it was the number 1 seller Amazon then just stole it and banned the store before selling their own. So evil and if ltt is going to be making quality items I don't doubt Amazon will try to steal it especially if Linus has cost them business by telling the world their 1000 dollar TV's are garbage and not to buy it.
but how long do they last without stuff like burn-in to happen? They probably deliver the best picture but I'm still concerned about this. The pricepoint is also still quite high
but OLED has many disadvantages like the very low brightness and burnin. when you compare it to QLED, OLED looks more like you're wearing sunglasses. especially in the upper price segment OLED is getting destroyed.
For the price of this TV at any size, you can get a Vizio that will outperform and look drastically better. If you had a little more at each size, you could get a Samsung or LG. For me, I have a 50in Vizio TV and a Vizio 55in E series monitor (monitor because it doesn't have a TV tuner). I love them. My dad purchased a 55in TCL Roku TV for the same price I got my Vizio and I dislike the colors and image quality and smearing and ghosting. We have 2 of the 55in Toshiba 4K Fire TV at my office that I installed as smart signage players and they do OK. Videos come out weird sometimes if our media person did some fancy processing but they are great if all you need is a cheap smart TV. (personally, I'd not buy them if I was watching TV on them though).
If you talk about "bad" HDR content PLEASE add an example of what it should look like side by side! this shouldn't be that much additional effort and would really make this video a lot more helpfull!
So before watching I'm wondering how integrated Amazon Alexa is in this thing? I miss just "basic" tv's with simple inputs without any smart features...
I think the most absurd statement made in this video is that a Kirkland branded gaming pc or monitor could exist and somehow be worse than this. Well for one, Kirkland would probably be a rebrand of a popular company or based off of an already popular brand like LG or HP rather than some (mostly) unknown company. And secondly, wouldn't they be directly competing against themselves(Costco) off of already low prices they set themselves rather than trying to set a new low benchmark standard like amazon is doing with this TV?
There's no difference between what Costco does with Kirkland and what AmazonBasics does, other than Kirkland has a better quality reputation. The point of house brands is not just to try to leverage the intelligence from what they sell to try to capture more of that profit, it's to expand the market by offering different(lower) price points. Costco doesn't actually have particularly great deals on PCs, most of the time. Not in Canada anyway.
Stay honest, hell yea. I watch reviews to have better experts than me, even tho I work in high level IT, do detailed testing like this that I'm unaware of since I'm not an expert in TVs, etc.
Anyone actually wanting to game on a TV should just be getting an LG C1 OLED when it's on sale. Save up that bit extra and will be much more worth it than any of these cheap TV's.
Well you can't just say it like that it still depends if brightness is a concern or wether you only play one single game which makes burn in a problem!
Click to photon is the wrong metric to test Linus and this is because you are testing with the wrong setup. Instead read the input signal directly and correlate that with the display. It's input signal to photon that matters. And how do you do that ? Use an oscilloscope like the rigole ds1054z On one channel tap any of the color channel, like green+. Also called tdms channel 1 +. This is HDMI pin 4. On the other channel you will put a fast acting light sensor and put it right next to the display.(I would use a simple diode) Now you will switch between an all black image to a max green image in quick succession. Without having to decode individual pixel values, you will see the tdms has a radically different signal switching between all black to all green. Likewise your photo sensor will jump up on the brightness increase. With this oscilloscope it is very easy to count the exact signal latency. Also, you should always shoot LCDs with the high speed, so we can get a feel for just how much smearing there. Smearing is more complex than latency, it's not just one number and it's one of the ways manufacturers lie about panel refresh rate (gray to gray BS)...
The only FireTv I get people to buy at BBY (weird channel sensors?) is the Toshiba C350, but they're all the same manufacturer. I believe Hisense makes all FireTVs, that being Toshiba, Insignia, Hisense, and Pioneer outside of the Omni lineup. TCL having parts in there still doesn't surprise me.
"IR Receiver out" It says next to the port clearly labelled "IR EMITTER out".. come on guys lol It's not for "being able to point your remote not exactly at the TV" it's four OUTPUTTING IR signals to control other devices with Alexa. @@ChrisTingman how is a qualitative conclusion about the product a moot point? a lot of people watch these videos to have an idea of what to buy. actual braindead opinion
@@joeykeilholz925 Yeah, the money they make off the ads is quite a lot. I suspect a decent amount of the reason why insanely cheap TV's aren't absolute garbage now is because the ads reduces the price they can sell them for.
smart or not it doesnt matter much these days, its a 20 dollar addon that most companies swallow the cost for for the marketing part. Just get a smart tv with a factory implementation, not a roku/fire stick one, they tend to only pop up when you specifically press the button for em, instead of being intrusive
I've got a TCL tv and it ain't too bad. (Nothing special, but better than a non-4k tv.) It has built-in Roku, but that Roku isn't powerful enough to run the TV. It glitches out and stutters, even when wired or 2 feet above the router. I got a Chromecast with Google TV and it works great now!
As someone who actually owns one of these, I'm going to add my 2 cents: For anyone who hates FireTV - you're wrong. Period. You don't like Amazon... fine. But pretending FireTV sucks is completely without merit. The one we have has some pretty bad diagonal flare. Not a game breaker, but definitely not impressive (discussed at 5:40) The color quality for the (discounted) price point is very good compared to what we were accustomed to. The screensaver doesn't work - the tv just powers off. Probably a firmware issue, but not acceptable. When it self-powers off, it completely severs the link to the soundbar. VERY not acceptable. Toshiba has come out with their own version of the 75" Fire TV and I wish I would have waited for that one, as the FIVE Toshiba FireTVs I have (including 4 as 12+ hour-per-day monitors between two households) have been bulletproof. 8:20 - Gaming on my Toshibas is fantastic, not sure why Onmi screwed it up so bad, In conclusion, for the feature/price point ratio, you're not going to beat a FireTV. Amazon is subsidizing them by hundreds of dollars, so unless you're a hater, there's no reason not to take advantage... but I'm far from sold on the Omni. It might have better picture than the Toshiba, but Toshiba's been doing this for 5 years, and got the bugs worked out.
What a strange comment...you insist it's great, then list half the reasons that it's actually trash, then conclude it's great... Sorry but FireTV sucks, it just isn't a good experience and if for some reason you're really in love with it you can just plug a fire stick into a TV that isn't shit... Also, "None of them exploded yet..." isn't a selling point, that's just the baseline.
Just wondering why at this price most people wouldn't just go for the Hisense 75" U7G. I'm fairly certain it would easily outperform this unit in many ways. 🤔
Because most people know Amazon and nobody knows Hisense. Most people are silly sheep when it comes to spending their money.. reputation and big name is everything.
Brand familiarity. How many people have you met that actually know who Hisense is? I'm probably guessing not many. You have to be living under a rock if you didn't know what Amazon is. This tv will end up selling by the truck load because Amazon will be doing heavy discounts and will have brand familiarty... Most people do their holiday shopping on Amazon anyway, so why not by a TV while they're at it.
@@tyrcipher8811 I still think they will have a hard time against the Samsungs, LGs etc.. but as mentioned it's a brand recognition competition.. Even if Amazon make paltry sales they will still make a bigger dent in the market than Hisense is ever capable of.

I can see a lot 20 something years old picking this tv for their grandparents who are still rocking TV from the early 2000s, so that they can finally get with the times.
I guess I'm just under the assumption that if people are planning on getting a new television and spending a decent amount of cash that they'll do a bit of research. But yeah ... many just go by name recognition and the big 'SAVE $XXX' beside said name.
Amazon barely got the Myspace feel out of their website but yeah, a 75" dumpster Fire tablet seems like like a great plan. It's truly a shame millions of people are going to buy these things and not even notice the UI is a funnel into Amazon's content and products.
I've owned an Insignia fire tv for years and honestly the UI isn't that bad, but it was better before the recent updates. I never even notice the ads and all of the apps that I use often are easily accessible. I honestly prefer this UI over my LG.
I recently helped a friend buy a new budget TV. I ended up pointing him to a Best Buy (Insignia) Fire TV. A month in and I am advising him to return it and get a ROKU TV. He's had the sound stop working numerous times and the only fix is to reboot Fire TV. Problem is, Fire TV has no reboot menu item so reboot means unplug.
2:25 That is definitely not a SPDIF input. It's glowing red so it's an output. And it says "IR emitter", so sure it's for an IR receiver? Sound to me like an option to make it send IR to another device.
I'm with ya there. I got the insignia 50inch 4k oled model firetv on sale at $280 from $399 which changes the game a bit. I came from a 2014 vizo 67inch. I would never buy my fire TV at that original price. But for this price and the picture quality , this is by far good for me with tweaking. That's all I care aboult, picture. Sound goes threw my own soundbar. The only thing I don't like, is the refresh rate. but I can sacrifice that for the picture quality. I also watch firetv for most, if not all, of my stuff sooo. It doesn't bug me with the ui.

I serviced Samsung TVs back in 2019 and early 2020. The inside of that unit is basically identical to the low end models Samsung sells/sold. Like, I don't just mean cables and layout. The main pcb and power/vss board are very similar, as are the back of the panel and the speakers. I have a heavy suspicion that either Samsung is involved in this, or they source low end components from the same place as TCL.
I had a 55” 4KTCL for a bit over 3 years, I bought it dirt cheap at Target. My only complaint was the black levels and response time. Overall though for what I paid it served it’s purpose and plus some.

Lo and behold, TCL.
That is EXACTLY how LG sets work!!

For a 75", $1100 isn't crazy, but also with what the TV comes with, It definitely belongs closer to $800 or $900. A "small" note on that privacy part with the microphone kill switch at 11:25 :
If a "physical switch" creates a software-popup, it ist most likely NOT a physical switch.
That doesn't mean the mic isn't phisically disconnected, entirely the data line or the power.
You can read that and display on screen.
Computers are capable of detecting open circuits, which is what would happen if it was a physical switch
The software probably saw that that the microphone was disconnected to show that popup
wtf is this shitty logic lol. If you physically unplug your webcam from your PC, windows is entirely capable of having a pop-up saying the webcam was disconnected

I have both a fire stick and a Roku and I find the Roku much easier to use and much more aesthetically pleasing
My TCL goes back to the input it was last on, even when cold booting (i.e. not waking from standby)
What about hdmi CEC? TV can startup with console
The Samsung I have defaults to last input.
LG does have ads but you can scroll away from them. Same for the Shield. Roku just puts a box on the right side for s "suggested" movie.
Thanks for the heads up
The Lag Spikes may be inadequate cooling.
If you only use the HDMI anyway can't you just disconnect it from the LAN/WiFi (no more updates or work for the CPU to spike on)
That's what I did with my JVC TV then I added a smart switch to turn it off (now it's offline it turns on and goes straight to hdmi)

I have a similar question for Linus.
(It's actually the same question).
The thing I love more than honesty is brutal honesty.
We should all just not buy amazon branded stuff, its good to see them failing but unfortunately this fail is competing against other large companies, if only they would fail when they try to push out small companies with imitation products...
This is true. But I would be less bothered supporting a company without a history of abusing employees.
Idk why you call this tv a fail I been using the 55 inch Omni for about week now and I m have 0 complaints about it
Good color accuracy in Movie mode for SDR content and acceptable input lag only in game mode?
Just picked up the 55'' on sale for $109 😁😁😁😁 so worth it

$1099 for a 75 inch? WHAT? I paid less than that for my LG like 2-3 years ago and I guarantee it's a better TV.
Most sets have three, I think the C1 may have four but I would have to check.
I have to say the Omni-series is honestly a good tv for it’s price and still beats other TVs even near that price range in all important keys for a good tv
AmazonBasics is becoming the no name brand from our childhood

I have a Samsung Q6 from 2019 and love Samsungs menus and smart tv. It’s so easy to use and responsive. I don’t even need a cable box. I just have the app cable. It’s also pretty good for a tv gaming. It can natively do 1440p 120hz with like 8ms response time. I can actually play old games like mega man without that terrible lag making the game way harder than it already is.

OMG the tone of his voice during "Oh *I guess I get* to try that now?" 😂😂😂👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤
I think the most absurd statement made in this video is that a Kirkland branded gaming pc or monitor could exist and somehow be worse than this.
Not in Canada anyway.

even when you are very knowledgeable about TV's you would still have to buy the device to test it without reviews.
@@adrianoawz2676 Only of you play outside or 40 feet away from the screen. Most gamers sit close. Brightness is not an issue.
Click to photon is the wrong metric to test Linus and this is because you are testing with the wrong setup.
Instead read the input signal directly and correlate that with the display.
It's input signal to photon that matters.
And how do you do that ? Use an oscilloscope like the rigole ds1054z
On one channel tap any of the color channel, like green+. Also called tdms channel 1 +. This is HDMI pin 4.
On the other channel you will put a fast acting light sensor and put it right next to the display.(I would use a simple diode)
Now you will switch between an all black image to a max green image in quick succession.

The one we have has some pretty bad diagonal flare. Not a game breaker, but definitely not impressive (discussed at 5:40)
The color quality for the (discounted) price point is very good compared to what we were accustomed to.
8:20 - Gaming on my Toshibas is fantastic, not sure why Onmi screwed it up so bad,
In conclusion, for the feature/price point ratio, you're not going to beat a FireTV. Amazon is subsidizing them by hundreds of dollars, so unless you're a hater, there's no reason not to take advantage... but I'm far from sold on the Omni.
