Here in the States at Lowe's and Home Depot, I have found 5" orchid pots that I am in love with. They are very heavy-duty, clear as glass, in an acrylic type material. I love being able to clearly see inside. The holes are oval and angled downward so that as the roots come out, the edges are not as sharp. The holes are also large enough to push most of the roots back through without much damage. I am slowly changing all of my nearly 100 phalaenopsis over to them. They've been a real gamechanger! ❤
I love the look of the roots growing outside the pot. That's very appealing to me. It is part of what makes orchids so interesting to grow. You never know what to expect.
I repot my orchids once per year, but I love aerial roots. A Lot! I just let them be, the more the better. There is something ethereal about them, even in Monsteras. Love your content.
Hi Danny! I live in Nicosia and only recently I found this transparent pots at Rank Planter. They had only the big transparent pots and after telling them that I don't find anywhere the medium size, they brought and the medium size. So have it in mind that they sell transparent pots for orchids in Nicosia.
Hey Dani, could you do a video on what the white dots on orchid roots are? I've always wondered what they are there for. I love your vids so much! They have helped me greatly!
The white dots on roots are just a sign that they are well hydrated. Some says it is an indication of healthy roots but not really applicable all the time
Great video, thanks. If the aerial roots aren’t super long, I try to coax them into the pot when it’s time to repot but if I can’t do that due to their length, I just leave them to grow as they want outside. It has worked for me so far 🤞I decided on this based on another of your videos that talked about aerial roots as an orchid’s backup plan for roots rotting in the pot. Why not get some aerial roots used to growing in the pot with other good roots when repotting instead of having to deal with aerial roots having to acclimate quickly when the orchid is stressed because of root dieback??? Am I off target with my approach?
Understanding that roots are constantly growing and dying, what causes aerial roots to dry up? It that their normal end, or did they dry up because they aren’t getting watered or are getting too much light? It’s a selfish thing I want to prevent as they are so much prettier with healthy plump green aerial roots 😊
Hi, I really enjoy your channel and all the information you provide about orchids. I have been following you and growing orchids for about 3 years and need to repot some or them. I live in the US Pacific Northwest and water about once a week. Some are currently in moss and some in a bark mixture and both seem to be doing great. When going to the report store, I noticed they have several types of potting medium, do you have a specific type you like?
She lives in a hot environment and she likes to use a sphagnum moss and bark mixture with both mixed throughout the pot and bark on top to prevent bacteria.
Also Dani where have you been with your videos and prescence , I know you have moved and had alot no doubt to sort out, hope you are happy in your new home .
I recently bought a mini phal because it made sense due to my lack of space, I know it is most likely presntly in plug, should I repot it the same pot with better medium ?
hello. one of my orchid roots suddenly just died. I don't know what happened. Can you tell me why this may have happened? I have one orchid where the roots are very healthy and growing outside the pot.
I’ve really struggled with my two phalaenop orchids. I’ve never been able to get them to bloom. They are 2 years old and almost 4 years old. I’ve tried different food. I’ve tried different medium. Lately they have been growing Air roots and leaves and nothing else. Is this fine?
I can’t seem to keep aerial roots alive. Even the ones that live outside in the FL humidity just shrivel up and die. I started misting, no difference. Why am I killing the aerials?
It will be very difficult to keep it hydrated this way. I would try to get a few of the roots into the pot if possible and eventually the orchid itself will produce more roots in the pot :)
Danny, I have tried unsuccessfully to find some of the "basket/wire frames" you sometimes use to support the long leaves of oncidiums, etc. I can't find them, and don't even know what to call them when I do a search. Can you make any suggestion about where they can be located, particularly in the US if possible.
Hi, sorry I really don’t know, I used to find them locally (Cyprus). But Amazon has more things than you can want lol, have you tried to search for ring supports on there?
Could milder weather make your orchids start sprouting flower spikes this time of year? I have four Phalaenopsis orchids all in spaghnum moss sitting in a south window. One had a dried out flower spike two months ago which I cut back. The other three plants all were finished flowering and all flowers fell off. Suddenly now each pot is producing a new flower spikes..some have two! What could be going on in November? I'm totally confused!!
@@larissasheret7331 Thank you...I couldn't figure it out as I thought all orchids go dormant in wintertime and don't make flower spikes until Spring. I appreciate your input!!
Repot again and cut away those roots. Your orchid likely got root shock when you repotted it. This happens when several roots break and/or there is a sudden change in how much humidity is around the roots when you repot. Its also possible that you have been watering too much. Consider downsizing your pot and/or changing the type of medium you are using :)
@larissasheret7331 thank you but this particular one had nothing, I bought it a half a year ago and needed to upsize the pot because it had so so much roots, it could barely hold itself in in the 12cm pot. So I repotted, all the Buds opened, on 3 stems I head 33 flowers, she is a big big girl and now, obviously after half a year of blooming the blooms began to fall off. So I cut all the stems away, didn't repot since I did it 6 months ago and now I'm seeing those roots, since the stem cutting, before that, she was happy as a orchid can be.
@@larissasheret7331 and also my question is, if I repot now and cut away those roots but I see in one month again roted roots, should I them repot again?
Imo if your orchid has a lot of healthy roots, and she is sturdy, repot away. Cut with sterile scissors. Cut into the bad bit, not into good roots. Rotten roots can spoil your potting mix. ❤
For phalaenopsis orchids, soak medium then let it dry completely. It is handy to grow roots in clear pots to see how dry they are. Water only when dry. Think of environment the grow in in the wild. ❤😊

Maybe you are thinking of the little hairs they produce to help themselves stuck to things?

Lower temperatures, or in this case what is called a cool down, triggers flower spikes on many orchids! :) congratulations!
I have the same case, all of me 4 orchids are starting to bloom right now :) one even had a keiki
