- Anybody can start an Indian coin collection (republic India & Commemorative coins) with just 200 Rs change coins available with them.
In this video I will be showing how it can be done easily with very little effort and also learn how to identify the coins mint wise.
There are many ways to start a coin collection ,but I will show you a very easy and practical method with a very small budget of just 100 to 200 Rs or about 3 dollars can start collecting Republic India and commemorative coins. Also I will teach you to identify mints on the coins.
i started my coin collection in 1984 when i was 12 years old and today i have around 18 to 20 thousand coins which belong to Ancient India ,Mughals, Marathas , South Indian Coins, Indian Princely State Coins, British India Coins, Republic India Coins, Commemorative coins, Foreign coins, medals , Tokens are included in them.
I am passionate about a lot of other collectibles and I believe you also can start collecting them like me.
How to start ?
You can start right at your home ,go and search your house for some change of coins and if you don't have enough of them, get some coins say about worth 200 rs from a grocery store near your house or your locality. That will be enough to start with.
People normally think how can we start a coin collection with some normal looking change that we use every day. Yes but that's possible, and I will show how that can be done in this video. The value of the coins are in understanding the true intrinsic value as well as the numismatic value of coins that we come across.
First we should separate them according to their face values, like 1 rupee coins, 2 rupee coins, 5 rupee coins,10 rs,20rs etc. After sorting them according to the values ,we will further sort them according to the years on the coins, we will also find some commemorative coins in the lot mostly, so keep them separate as well.
After sorting them year wise, we will sort them according to the mints they were minted .
Mint Marks are special marks of mints on coins issued to identify the place they were minted from ,and they are very easy to be identified.
The four mints that coins are minted from in India are
Bombay mint - a vertical dot below the date
Noida mint - a round dot below the date
Hyderabad mint - A 5 pointed star below the date
Calcutta mint- No mint mark
Also some foreign mints had issued Indian Republic coins so they can be referred to at some online mint mark identification site for Indian coins.
A coin may have a same design and can be issued from different mints ,with just the mint marks visible on them being separate.
Keep the extras aside, just keep one coin variety to start with.
As we are trying see how many different varieties of coins can we get from a lot of normal looking coins.
This is the easiest way to separate and sort coins and find as many varieties as possible in republic India as well as commemorative coins, on an average you can find at least 50 different coins year wise and mint wise ,and also this is the easiest way of starting a coin collection with a very small budget of about 100 to 200 rupees.
Republic India coins are coins that were minted after 1947.
Also make sure that you keep aside the best condition coins for the collection, and if you find a particular coin which is not in a great condition ,you can change that coin when you get a better condition coin in future.
you can keep them in special folders or albums and keep adding the varieties that you don't have, year wise and mint wise.

At this rate it would take ages years on years to collect
Will have to sit on it doing this work alone.
But I guess there is no other option as the prices would be extremely high when you buy from collectors and reputed shops.
Again you won’t be able to collect all coins as some are rare and hardly get on hands on it.
So I feel you must do two way of collection from shops and well as getting easy coins from street vendors.
This is an option for anyone who just wants to start Collecting coins,initially when anyone starts Collecting coins,they are more interested in getting more varieties than think about the rare ones etc.
When I started collecting coins(since 1984) I started with some coins from different countries and was very excited when I would just get any coin which I did not have.That grew in to a big collection, varieties of a single coin also were being accumulated without I being aware of it.
After a couple of years I started to collect Indian coins(6th century to present),joined a coin Society and was a regular at meetings etc.This again was the turning point, the fine points of the hobby was learned here,like the grading,the rare ones,what to collect,and how to collect, and so on.
I now have around 20000 coins from Many different periods of India,and a lot of coin from different countries,medals,and also started collecting Vintage and Antique Collectibles in the same way and the collection grows almost every day.
I am sure anyone who starts collecting coins has very little knowledge about them initially,and knowing them takes a lot of regular handling and experience.Jn this period every one makes lot of mistakes or buys many coins of a particular variety instead of growing theme wise,these are just examples of some errors that can happen to anyone.
I want people to start with the bare minimum and make mistakes and learn and then grow the collection very gradually in a very systematic manner,and at the same time gaining whatever extra knowledge possible about the subject.
My video is just the first step towards this,helping people to just start with whatever they can get their hands on,and then continue if they are really interested to go ahead in to this deep never ending ocean of happiness and joy that I still enjoy and my most of my me time goes into this hobby.
I have started learning the language Urdu ( reading and writing both) so that I can decipher coins with urdu scripts.I have also started collecting Mughal Coins(1506 to 1857 AD) in a big way.
But it all started in a very small way and something which I never thought will ever grow into something of this size.
The journey has just began for me,lots more to be accomplished and collecting wise also,knowledge wise also a lot more still needs my time and efforts and offcourse very important the money(Most important) to take all this ahead.
