    7:10 As an Iranian-Canadian watching this, I had no idea until now that such a great rendition of the Australian national anthem was sung right before this match! I’m mesmerized by the singer and the crowd singing in unison. That has to be one of the best performances of the Australian anthem!

    I'm an Iranian Australian and I remember I was watching this live. I was a teenager at the time. We were over the moon when we beat Australia. Watching this in 2022, as an Australian citizen in Melbourne, made me sad and I just felt the sadness many Australians felt back then. This was truly a disaster. Australia should have gone through. Thanks for the video.

    Australia played the perfect game in this match and the result could have been close to a two digit number for them. However, the reason Iran was outmatched like that had a lot to do with the fact that since the rise of the islamic republic in Iran in 1979, this was their first time facing a strong sophisticated country in all terms in front of their ninety eight thousands home supporters. The Iranian players were so effected by the sophisticated atmosphere of the Cricket Ground, that for the first 25 minutes of the game, they were out of their elements and apart from the goal keeper, every other player was in a state of disarray and panic.
    Nothing however to take away from Australia's power and talent from the head coach to the players. Every Asian country participating in the 98 world cup qualifiers including Iran, were well aware of Australia's talent and power and wanted to avoid facing them by qualifying early as South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and Japan did.
    Once Iran realized that it was Australia that they had to challenge for the last available spot for the world cup, the hopes of the team and their many supporters were greatly lowered as the main question was that now that we have failed to get the better of the Asians teams, how can we get the better of Australia? That belief was reinforced after the 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Azadi in Tehran and certainly reached its peak after Australia scored their second goal in Melbourne.
    After witnessing the final result and how it was achieved, we can conclude that only a footballing miracle was the reason that Iran got to the 98 world cup and Australia didn't. Much like how Uruguay managed to defeat Brazil in the final of the 1950 world cup at the Maracana.

      So beautifully and eloquently put! I was a teenager in Iran. Iran was in turmoil, high inflation, horrible Islamic regime, neglect in every aspect of Iranians lives including sports! Just look at the Iranian Jersies poor quality! It was a miracle, pure and simple. Australia was a far superior team and every Iranian including me knew it

    Very Unlucky. It was clearly Australia's game. So many close misses. I was a conductor on A East Preston Tram. The Tram did An MCG run that night. I was listening on a small handheld transistor radio. The tram was empty . I was dancing when Aust. was leading 2 goals and few mins were left. When Iran equalised It was complete despair and agony . The Iran team was more experienced than the Aussies. They took advantage of the dying mins when a team slackens and lets its guards down.
    When the Spectators came out ,not a single person was talking. 40,000 + . All were in tears. Dads with little kids were crying. And in Utter Shock Yes SHOCK !!
    They were all just looking at me in defeat and agony as if for answers. I am Nth Indian with Indo Aryan looks with fair skin. They thot i was Iranian .
    I was shocked also and i kept shaking my head. Then they realised i was on Australia's side.
    Because i had the small transistor to my ear they knew i was listening to the commentary. So looking at me they were still connected to the events of the game.
    Entire Tram in tears just looking at me . As if i was God and they wanted answers. {pl don't get me wrong} Such was the intensity of their Shock and heart break.
    I went around and shared their heartbreak.
    It was a defining moment in my life in Australia. I became an Australian that day.
    I hate to say it but it was just Unlucky Day. So many close misses can only be attributed to luck.
    The lesson to learn was don't let your guards down in the final mins. An experienced team will take advantage of that.
    That's exactly what happened to The Matildas against England. {WWC Qualifier 2023 Syd. Aust.}

    Every time I watch this game I get absolutely disgusted with three of Iranian defenders who were in this team unjustly { number 5, 4 and 25} while our best defenders like Mohammad Khani and Zarrinche were left back home!!. This idiot trio were the main reason for Australians dominance on the game and also caused a huge shamble in the team and made the goalkeeper to suffer so much that night.
