I was in VF-161 1978-1981. Also, was 1980 Sailor-of-the Year, then AE1 Lynch; and first Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist. Thoroughly enjoyed the tour with the squadron.
I was stationed aboard the USS Midway with VF-151(F-4 Phantoms) and VF-161 was our sister squadron, my brother was in VF-161 at the same time. Worked on F-4s for a few years and retired as an Aviation Ordnance Chief Petty Officer. Many hours on these airplanes and on the flight deck. Thanks for the video.
Before i was on Midway i was stationed in P.I. Vrc-50 as a C-130 and C-2 loadmaster aircrew. Flew a'lot of cargo/mail on all the west coast CV'S that deployed in area at that time. Midway crew was far more impressive than stateside carriers, seasoned and experienced, you could tell the difference. I'm proud to be a small part of a KICKASS crew!
That brings back some great memories. I was in VF-161 ordinance shop back then. A helluva great way to see the world. We wore the Battle E on our ship AND our planes. I'd say that made us the elite unit in the entire 7th fleet. I've never worked with a better bunch of guys since. RIO111?Are you mr. Pavlakos?
