  • Here's another new exciting SHIP FEATURE featuring Sulpicio Lines' Speed Queen: M/V Filipina Princess. Why was she called the SPEED QUEEN? Check out the full video to know more details on why she was called that title.
She was the former Ferry Akashia of the Shin Nihonkai Ferry in Japan. She was sold to SLI in 1988 together with 2 more Japanese Ferries: Ferry Harima (later as the M/V Cotabato Princess) and Ferry Seto (later as the M/V Nasipit Princess) of Hankyu Ferry. This acquisition led other shipping companies to step up their game and further ignite the Great Liner War of the 1990s.
Watch the full video to know the full history and details of this magnificent ship! :)

Thanks for the video. As a kid, we used to cruise with Sulpicio and William Lines. I gained passion in cruising our seas in which I dreamt to be the captain of that ship, M/V Filipina Princess. Until I heard that Sulpicio Lines passenger operations were suspended after the latest ship disaster, my dream to be the captain of the former flagship was shattered. Moreover, Philippine Shipping industry spiraled down. Inspite of the mishaps, I still hope to command a vessel when I grow up. Fast forward today, I ultimately became a captain. Only now, in the airline industry. Still, my passion to experience cruising our seas and bringing the passengers to safety is still there.

I got the chance to board Filipina Princess along with my batch mates back in Oct. 28(not sure anymore), 2001 after ending a weeklong tour of Manila-Subic-Baguio-Laguna for our national tour. She didn't look as beautifil as she used to be compared to when I first saw her on tv ads in the late 80's and early 90's, having plied the route of Manila-Cebu and vice versa for 13 years. We were supposed to board the same ship that had taken us to the port of Manila which was the Princess of the Universe back home to Cebu but due to traffic we our tour bus from our last moment in Luzon in Enchanted Kingdom wasn't able to make it. Consequently we were booked to board Filipina Princess instead the next day morning.
I love watching this channel because this brings a lot of nostalgic memories of the past about Cebu's passenger shipping dominance of the country with so many players tightly competing one another. But now it's over. Gone are those sights of big passenger ships moored at the pier of Cebu at close distance.

    90s memory:
Waiting for this ship to arrive at Surigao port, from Davao going to Cebu-Manila. Her schedule was every Thursday, 3PM. Looking east, we spotted this huge ship navigating through Nonoc island and smaller islands nearby going to the port.
Once inside, we enjoyed her various accomodations and buffet meals!
This is the only ship that travels the entire eastern seaboard of Mindanao. Strong Pacific wind and waves, notwithstanding. Amazing ship!

My family and I had the privilege of being upgraded (for free IIRC) to suite class on our MNL-CEB journey back in Dec 1990, Suite D, portside. I can still remember the plush soft red carpet inside the entire room. And looking out the two windows, there were the bunk beds of the economy section of the former weather deck. I think we departed a wee bit late at around 11pm and arrived in Cebu before sunset, probably around 18 hours. I even got lost coz I went downstairs to explore and forgot about the stairwell I used (it was enclosed in a room). A very nice ship crew member helped me. I was crying (LOL) already at the time and all I said was "Letter D", coz all the rooms in the floor I ended up in had numbers. He figured everything out and brought me back to Suite D. 😹
On the return voyage, we were billeted in our regular cabin. Portside as well. 50% smaller than Suite D, but still very comfortable. One square window for the cabin itself, and one small round window for the bathroom. It was still a very enjoyable return trip. I even remember strolling at the lounge, where people were watching Rambo on the TV. IIRC, we departed at around 10pm-ish, and arrived in Manila with the afternoon sun still bearing down on us at the pier, probably 4pm.
Thank you for your service to Japan and the Philippines, Ferry Akasha / Filipina Princess.
You might be gone, but never forgotten. ❤️❤️❤️

Traveled on this ship in 1991 from Cebu to Manila. She was darn fast and very stable. We encountered rough seas approximately 4 hrs before docking in Manila and F.P handled it like a charm. This ship was way ahead of its time, it's unfortunate that she suffered her fate with the breakers prematurely.

Grandslam indeed! Sulpicio Lines ranked probably the most number of ships to figure in major disasters, most notable of whom is the M/V Doña Paz which collided with the oul tanker M/T Vector on December 20, 1987, 10 pm, killing more than four thousand (4,000) passengers and all crew members.

First time I saw that ship in the port of Davao I laugh because of her bow design in bisaya word murag nawong ug " PANTAT " But later on year 2007 I was able to serve her as an Engine Crew Ojt.. it was a nice experience kahit tumitirik Ang makina fighting parin. She only rides the rough sea of east coast Pacific ocean from lipata surigao to davao route. She was an Old and experience vessel. really need for retirement for a very long service on which every ship will do.. I can only say that once I board , saw her beauty Ang strength which I will treasure forever...

The last time I boarded this ship was when I went to manila in 1998 for the National Jamboree along with other cebuanos and Davaoenios who joined the event. It was fast. It was raining and the ship was swaying left and right. I can still remember the captain of the ship announcing everyone to join in prayer and informed us where the life jackets were. But we made it to manila safe.

Please feature General Shipping, Philippine President Lines, Sweet Lines, Corominas & Richards and Escano Lines. I had very interesting and happy experience with Sweet Grace (a brand new vessel) on its maiden trip (actually maiden return trip) from Tacloban to Manila in 1968. Before that, the passenger boats were old, refurbished FS boats from the war era.

    • @junc3354

I was fourth year high school at that time.. there was a very good competition for passengers at Tacloban Manila route.
Compania Maritima had MV Mactan, Sulpicio Lines had Dona Ana and Sweet Lines MV Sweet Grace..
North Camarines also had a ship plying that route and so with another CM boat MV Leyte. MV General Capinpin was the General Shipping boat on that route.. if my memory serves me right, a boat MV Kolambugan of Escano Lines and so with MV Raja Sulimam also did the Tacloba Manila route weekly.
oh I forgot, before Sweet Grace, Sweet Rose was doing that route.. most of the ships at that time had ports in between and after Tacloban.. Catbalogan, Calbayog, Masbate and Romblon going Manila and Cebu , Nasipit Butuan , Cagayan de Oro , Davao and Cotabato and even Zamboanga were the ports of call after Tacloban.. I think Escano Lines had two Ships alternating the weekly Manila Tacloban Cotabato Davao Zamboanga route..

I always take the ship from Cebu to Manila and vv. I took Filipina Princess from Manila to Cebu it was huge and she a very fast ship. I was on the tourist deluxe section very nice accommodation. I really enjoyed the entire voyage very relaxing and the crews are super nice . I used to see this huge ship at mactan beach for she’s one of those that doesn’t go through the usual route or to go under the first bridge because of her size . I always take Sulpicio lines as much as possible unless it’s not available. I had a great experience every time I take Filipina princess and other Sulpicio vessels. I was saddened about the news that their license was suspended and was no longer able to operate after the Princess of the Star incident. Filipina princess , thank you for your service to the country.
