For those wondering, the story goes something like this. The two men are named Val and Kai and they are partners. They met in the midst of an epic battle with some beast and from that moment on became dependent on each other and they refuse to be apart. Kai is the one injured in what looks like a noxus invasion on Ionia and Val is unwilling to live without him. The Darkin Varus is trapped in a bow in the bottom of the Well they two are seen at. When they fall in, Varus attempts to take on of them over and alone, they would've been overtaken by the Darkin power. However, the love they share allowed them both to become a host for Varus and give him life again. (credits:Mizako 96)
Some extra context/background. Val is a warrior and Kai is a hunter. The darkin are ancient beings with great power, but they were trapped inside weapons and are unable to act by themselves, they need a host, someone to wield the weapon they are trapped in. Usually when this happens the Darkin completely takes control of the human and very little remains of the consciousness of the host. Varus (the darkin trapped in the bow we see in this video) have been reaching out to Val even before the events depicted here, as he is a great warrior and Varus wants him as his next host. As Kai became mortally wounded, he gave in to Varus call, with the promise that he would save Kai. Both Kai and Val entities fused with Varus, giving birth to a single being and with both the humans in a never ending struggle for control with the Darkin. Since there are two humans battling the Darkin, the latter is having a much harder time than usual to be the one in control of the host.
The three of them became Varus, this is the way he was created. He has 3 voices inside his head all the time. Their are still alive in a way, so in a way he saved them both. Love your league reactions!

yep, the "demon" (actually a darkin), is something that lives inside objects like in this case the Bow, and posses a body so the demon can "live"/walk, this one wanted a body, but the 2 men were in love and keep fighting for each other soul, so the darkin had to take both of their souls and now their one
Hes definitely not a demon, he is of a race of humans who's world was attacked by the void and to aid in their defence they used blood magic to make themselves immortal bodies which is their weapons. They lost the war and had to escape and some escaped to runeterra. These Darkin were sealed within their weapons and the weapons were put in vaults whilst they are conscious the entire time. I'm not sure how long they were in this state but can you as a mortal like them say you would be sane after a millennia of being locked in your own body unable to move and the only thing to do is think. The darkin are battle hardened warriors that used blood magic to augment themselves to protect their world from an invading force that wanted to devour them. Darkin no longer have human bodies as their consciousness is within their weapons, they need to source bodies to posses or otherwise aid them in moving and achieve their goals. Varus is the bow, Rhaast is the scythe and Aatrox is the sword. In Varus and Rhaasts case they are wrestling for control from their hosts but Aatrox has completely dominated his hosts body.

Meet Valmar & Kai, they are lovers so the other did what he can to save his lover even if they had to touch a dangerous sealed weapon. Oversimplified answer: The purple spirit is a demon that was trapped at the bottom of the well. It used their bodies to escape and walk free.

If you wanna understand everything properly then I’d recommend you watch necrit varus lore as it contains events before during and after
