Good contact & pick up! Those 3 photo copiers are a pain I'll bet! I can only imagine how heavy they must be!! That's something to consider when taking on ewaste jobs, Lots and lots of great items but then you get 3 photo copiers at one place. That can put a hurtin on the back, especially for older guys like myself!!!
You should use a rollcontainer, like they use them in supermarket. With the 2 racks on each side. I think you can carry 2 to 3 times more and they fit in elevators. And they are very stable and can be taken apart easily...
Joan Lockwood You should have the shot I have. My wife has been wanting to see what he looks like. I showed her one of the 1st video where there was a fuzzy reflection of him, from a monitor or something. (Not good enough, she says) so I keep watching not really thinking about it and right there plain as day Ben walks by a mirror! It took a few minutes to pause at right time. But I have a crystal clear pic of Ben! That one she was happy with. Also she thinks he's a good looking guy!!!
Nick Kalaitzidis How and when did you have that opportunity? I'm a really big fan. I'm always waiting for a new video to come out. If it's been 3 days, I'll check every hour to see if a new one is out yet. Ben's vids has helped me get through some problems I've had in my life and has been a huge inspiration. I'm from the U.S. and have considered getting myself there to meet him and to offer free help to teardown laptops or anything to help.
one day when I go to see my brother in Vic I will lay in wait for Ben, take a picture post it for all us gals.... lolololoololol anyone wanna come with me?..hahahahahaah NO Ben I wont only pulling yu leg....
Good haul of pc's! Want some free service of me scrapping laptops or something? I live in the U.S but would love to fly in and spend my time helping you scrap! (that would go nice on my bucket list) Pretty impressive. I know you've had bigger hauls of pc's but goodness that's a lot. I have followed your directions on a very small level. I have flyers and so far I've passed them around to some residential & a couple of very small businesses. My best haul was 2 Dells from 2004 & 2006. He also dug out what might have been a small server. It had 2 CPU sockets of different sizes, with only 1 CPU. The nice thing was, the CPU was a I486dx!!! On your top ten most valuable CPU's it was ranked #3. I was pretty happy about that! Plus he dropped it off on my birthday! Yay!!! I know that sounds pretty lame but I'm new and trying! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK & INSPIRATION TO MANY!!!
eWaste Ben It was a great birthday !!! I am going to send you via email my story. I just had to deal with family emergency. I'm the guy who woke up one morning paralyzed from the waist down at the age of 31. I've not forgotten and hope I'm not a burden. I LOVE YOUR VIDS!!!!!!
1) You should save the screws off of the sides of the hard drives. they are specific to HP computers. 2) The Logitech keyboard dock is a charging station for the wireless keyboard. 8-)
what you should do is set up ram disks in some of the desktops that u pick up, network them all together into a compute cluster running linux and then use the compute cluster for contributing towards medical research. no joke this actually would be kind of interesting
@1NIGHTMAREGAMER also very very true, you can absolutely use it free, I just always activate windows because it's just so cheap that it's 100% worth it for 12 bucks.
Hi, please make sure to remove those PCBs from the hard drives and resell those. For data recovery of another drive, sometimes you're trying to get a specific exact PCB. It would probably sit on your selling shelf for a few months/years, but would probably sell for at least $10 to $20 to some tech who would be overjoyed at this making his data recovery possible. :-)
I was just sitting here calculating what you got only in those PC's and Laptops... I do the same thing here in Canada. Those i5 laptops, I could fetch 300-400 each! The PC's 250-350 each!.... about $2500cad bud! That's a good find!
you scored huge on those phones. Those are polycom vvx410 ip phones, and they aren't cheap. They still retail for over 60 bucks apiece on the used market. Christmas indeed on that haul.
those phones got some some nice Gold plating...nice pickup.....ohhh crap you got a parking ticket it blew off around the corner.......those are wireless keyboards keep one......and keep that bigger HP pro book new ram and good as new.........
many times customers do not know what the heck they are throwing away. One time I saw a box being thrown away and they did not care to open it as it was already written off for taxes and as it was delivered to the dump recycle yard it turned out to be a server that was never used in brand new condition and it was 10 years old.
41:28 the method of choice for data disposal depends on several factors; value / type / sensitivity of the data, budget and thread model. Drilling ONE hole into the platter(s) is one of the quickest and cheapest methods, which only actually destroys the data that was stored in the area of the hole. Drilling holes will not protect against advanced data recovery methods, which might involve disassembly, physical restoration until "good enough", expensive specialised recovery gear and software. Drilling a hole only renders the device inoperable, and only protects against minor threads. It's actually kind of a gamble, because a dude with a drill certainly doesn't know in which area of the platter(s) sensitive data is located. Given a sufficient resell value, e.g. a good S.M.A.R.T. report and 1TB+, and no contractual obligation to physically destroy storage devices, one could just "sanitise" the thing by overwriting it with random data and or zeros. There are free tools that even implement special military grade algorithms, e.g. "DBAN". This process could take at least several hours, up to days. If it comes to physical destruction, there are even standards for post-destruction particle size, but that's mostly required by military and other government agencies that store extremely sensitive / secret data. Well, it's all about the thread model, the "what could possibly go wrong"; drilling one hole is probably safe enough for a customer service call centre or such. But i'd choose more thorough methods for an R&D department, or a virology lab.
Fluffy Floofer Just ask Hillary Clinton's people how it's done. haha!!! On a serious note. I advertise that I can destroy harddrives upon request. What I do is open it up and completely dismantle everything. Then I take my dremmel drill and gouged out a couple of lines across each side of the platter. DO YOU THINK THAT'S EFFECTIVE ENOUGH???
Haha, yeah, Hillary (and her contractors) failed quite spectacularly at infosec / thread modelling. Your approach is certainly more thorough, and time-consuming. Depending on the storage density, i.e. bits per square cm, you might miss some sensitive data. One data recovery technique involves burnishing / polishing, so that the read head can "fly" over the platter's surface at the required distance, less than a hair's diameter, without hitting burrs. The original PCB of a hard disk drive, with the device's calibration profile, is not even required; there are some video examples here on YT that show special jigs. A fascinating topic. For forensic data recovery, it's irrelevant if one can restore 20 or 50 GB of the operating system, apps and games, when only a 200 KB fragment of e.g. browser history, a partial JPEG image, or a text file is recoverable. As i said, it depends on the thread model. If your customer's face melts when only a few kilobyte of their 1 TB HDD actually gets recovered, well… ;) …That's also why there's full disk encryption, in some drives even integrated into their ICs. Physical destruction prevents data recovery efforts. Search for "hdd shredder", here on YT ;)
Fluffy Floofer I was hoping that would worked. Also I never sell ANY part of a circuit board or platter. I will be processing every part of the hard drive / motherboard etc.
@excited box secret services prefer a specific "particle size" - iirc, it's about 1mm³, maybe less …basically a fine powder - "Data Powder" - for their "data disposal" …i'm not sure where read/heard that …probably from Wikileaks, Snowden, DEFCON, or CCC …the usual suspects …LOL xD
Nice haul! I have been watching your videos for a while and live in an apartment complex where people throw out all kinds of things at the dumpster and so far have taken apart a couple of the crt tvs for copper and am collecting that only as a fun side project, Any other smaller sized items you would recommend?

The method of dealing with the drives is a bit of waste. There are a number of ways to ensure that data can't be recovered and still leave the drive in working order. DOD level wipe will work. Electromagnet with pulse system is probably the fastest. Just don't make actual physical contact with it.
DOD wipes, physically shreds, and then burns. I'm not even kidding. Brand new stuff gets used for a mission and then data wiped, shredded, and burned. The NSA will tell you (or not) that ANYTHING which has EVER been saved to a drive is potentially recoverable regardless of how much wiping is done. It's a matter of luck and how much effort they'll put into the recovery effort.
It's quicker for them in that small office environment to take the drives out and physically destroy them. If the business was closing, ain't nobody got time to install the software on 30+ computers and wait 4+ hours waiting for drives to be wiped? Just give me my hammer. :D

@nick, but if there's a sticker with a valid key on the case then you can legally use that to install a fresh copy of windows. Just don't be like Eric Lundgren and order 28,000 discs from China that had windows software burnt onto them, he got sentenced to 15 months in prison. He said it was the windows restore software from the Dell website which is free to download. :-)
