I'm a fellow heretic on this one 😁. Crisis What Crisis and Even In The Quietest Moments are their best albums IMHO - a perfect blend of poppiness, bluesiness, rocky grooves, progressive invention and extension, and that quintessentially Supertramp undercurrent of melancholy and edginess. 👍

It's so hard for me to say which is my favorite, but if pressed, it would have to be Quietest Moments. But they didn't make a single less than amazing album with Roger In the band.

Very good energetic track with its construction all in progression and tension.
Crime of the Century was a superb album however I prefer Crisis? What Crisis? which I find more direct and catchy.
The band members weren't very happy with it at the time of its release due to pressure from the record label during the recording, however a few years later Rodger Hodgson admitted that Crisis? What Crisis? was his favorite Supertramp album and I totally agree with him !

Back in the days when everyone thought Crime of the Century was their first album and Even in the Quietest Moments... was their next album, I was loving this album more than all the rest. So glad you're on board with this Crisis. Don't wait so long for the next one...
And please think about The Day the Earth Caught Fire. I know City Boy has their detractors (and I think you've seen that every artist has some haters), but there are a few of us out here who love these guys a lot because they're a talented group, a very talented group. I'm sure someone will snidely remark that there's no accounting for taste. And that's exactly right, there is no accounting for it; that's why we all get to enjoy the tastes we want to enjoy.

One of the big underrated gems of Supertramp, to be sure.
If you go ahead to watch the live in Paris version, you'll see that:
    - they accelerated the tempo to a frantic one (and Hodgson performs his guitar duties just as fine)
    - they had the good taste of adding a conclusion, where the woman actually gives her answer

Always loved this album and this track in particular. Live it was amazing as they piled into the huge jam at the end delivering more energy and pace than the album cut.
Crime, Crisis, and Quietest moments are like three children to me, all beautiful and my affection wanders between them depending on my mood but I cant rank them, then on occasion my favour will fall on their brasher bolder American cousin ‘Breakfast’ but never for long always come back to these three albums.

_Crisis?_ has always been one of my favorite albums from the Tramp. For me, it is only slightly behind _Crime_ in terms of quality songwriting. But in the overall scheme of their discography imho, _Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis?_ and _...Even in the Quietest Moments..._ are pretty well interchangeable as their top three albums.

It's like a mirror image of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here album: pressure for a follow up after the massiveness of Dark Side of The Moon/Crime of the Century; a feeling that they had nothing to say...and then smashing out of the park with something that, to my ears anyway, is more repeatedly listenable to than Dark Side or Crime of the Century.
And then the main co-writer spat and breakup and eternal tension and legal disputes. Heavens, there's even a Roger and Rick fallout in both bands!

Always a treat to wake up to Supertramp. They didn't overwhelm you with guitar instrumentation, they seemed to always know what sounds to put where. While I can't agree with it being better than Crime of the Century, it's nearly as good and definitely underrated. I like Rick Davies grittier vocals/songwriting as a counterpoint to Mr. Hodgson's lyrics and delivery. But I like both, to be sure.

    • @gemini2012100
      @gemini2012100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think that Wurlitzer piano was the key to Supertramp's sound. And Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson both have very distincive voices. There is no way you could hear this or any song for the first time and not say, or at least think, "Yep, That's Supertramp."
It's kind of funny how some groups have such a distinctive sound that you can hear a song for the very first time and know who it is before the singing even starts. Supertramp is definitely one of them.

I don't dislike Supertramp by any means, I just never glommed onto them like I do with other bands. It doesn't help that I lived in a dorm where everyone just played their favorite album every day extra loud so the world could know their opinion, "Crime" was one of those ("Bat Out of Hell" was another, hated that album for a long time).
I do like the band enough that I made my own 2-disc compilation. Maybe I'll listen to whole albums at some point. This song didn't sound much like them, I like the stripped down production, you can really hear the lyrics and the melody, not just hooks. Personally I'd have shortened the long fade out a bit.

Late to this, but great one Justin!
This was maybe my favourite song when I was around 11-12 years of age. I thought everything in it sounded so cool. It's good to find out I still really appreciate it now, some 4 decades later.
And yes, this album is great. Is it better than COTC? Matter of taste really, they are both awesome. And the album after this album, and the one after that, not at all bad; maybe not as in your face as these two, but you won't hear a bad track on any of these.
In my mind, this is the canon of Supertramp: Crime of the century, Crisis?, Even in the quietest moments, Breakfast in America. All rounded off with the epic Paris live double album.
I will say, after Roger's departure, the next album "Brother where you bound" really fits in there for me too. It's not as consistent as their output in the mid 1970's, but it's full of really strong tracks and great production.
    Check it out sometime

After release 'Crisis, What Crisis?' did not get amazing reviews. Fans were bemused by the lack of 'concept' and there was no long bombastic track like 'Crime of the Century'. Critics were less than amazed and although reviews were ok it was not, let's say, universally praised. It only achieved no. 20 on the UK album chart which was ominous. Supertramp never achieved a number one album or single in the UK. It has certainly gained recognition over the years and on several best of lists it is second only to 'COTC'. I loved it right from purchase and particularly like the last two tracks. Glad to see you get back to it.

I'll bet that McCartney wishes he had written this song. It certainly has that flavor. I would definitely not argue with anyone who thinks that CWC is a better (or best) album from Supertramp. It is certainly the most fun, and the band really seems to be having a good time - which translates directly to the listener. Rick would come back to his "cannonball" reference years later on a track with that very title on the "Brother Where You Bound" album. "Cannonball" is also a great jam.

It's the album I have played the most over the last 46 years. That's my opinion as a superfan or Supertramp since I was 13 in 1975. They are favourite band of all time. IMO Crisis is their third or fourth-best LP but we are talking decimal points of difference in the ratings I would give to their output from Crime of the Century to Crisis? What Crisis? (third or fourth best) to Even in the Quietest Moments (second-best album) to Breakfast In America (third or fourth best) to Famous Last Words (another sorely underrated LP).

Wasn’t really thrilled when the Rick vocals started but they actually, didn’t make me cringe too much.
Musically, it was decent, the ending tones giving a hint as to the answer.
I love that shirt, I have a green one that’s way too big, I bought years ago. They make great guitar covers.

Glad you're enjoying your visit to this part of the 1970s, Justin. I may not wholly agree with you about this outplaying "Crime", but still like all four of the classic albums from "Crime" through "Breakfast". Having enjoyed them from then to now, still not quite sure if these Supertramp LPs qualify as the light side of prog or are better seen (and heard) as part of art-rock, along with 10cc, etc.
Btw, have you heard any 10cc songs, such as "Art for art's sake" from the album "How Dare You!" (great cover art from Hipgnosis)? Plenty more fine tracks from that group, and also some from Godley & Creme, who split off from 10cc part way through, during the 70s. Just something to add to your active explorations, if you feel like it.
And still hope you'll venture into the darker side of that Manchester music history (10cc, Godley & Creme in the 70s; Joy Division, etc into the 80s) with the relatively short-lived but influential band, Magazine. Plenty of sounds to choose from amongst their post-punk, art-rock songs. Even their first album ranges from "Shot By Both Sides" and "The Light Pours Out of Me" to "Parade" and "Motorcade".
And that's a great t-shirt you're sporting today from that classic XTC album cover, too. Have you listened to "No thugs in our house" from that album? Plenty of great songs on that release, tbh.

@@vdggmouse9512 It is a 3LP set. I have it too. I don't mind it. I did end up getting it on CD as well. The on going narration by Peter Cook was different and sometimes comical. "The Flood" stands out as it begins with a water drip and ends up at the Woodstock Festival. It's got it's moments. The gizmo had potential if only it didn't keep breaking.
"I Pity Inanimate Objects" from Freeze Frame is just wild. That screeching guitar just unravels my nerves. Matched only by "Baby's On Fire" by Eno and "Big Electric Cat " by Belew.

In my opinion Supertramp's albums get progressively better and better, and some argue that the band peaked on *Breakfast In America.* I rank *Even In The Quitest Moments* and "Breakfast" equally. They're more polished and less Prog-y, but still brilliant Art Rock albums. I'll be interested to see what you think when you get to them.

I think it was unfortunate that Crisis, What Crisis? Was sandwiched between COTC and Even in the Quietest Moments. It seemed to get forgotten. I bought it when it first came out and didn't think too much of it. However, earlier in the year I bought the CD and listened to it again. I have a completely different view of it now. So it was a timely coincidence when you started a review. This is what's great about Prog Rock from that time. Prompted by your good self there is so much to revisit and sometimes reappraise. Interested in what you make of Just a Normal Day. Cheers JP.

Crisis has always been my favourite Supertramp album - although I rank their eponymous debut (controversially) as a close second - probably because it was the first album of theirs I bought, back in 1988 when I got into the group. As for the song, I usually don't like Rick Davies' voice, especially when you have the falsetto of Roger Hodgson available, but this song is so good it sort of transcends that dislike. I'm sure Rick is a good person though, even if he was reportedly a bit of a git when Roger left in '83.

10cc meet the Bee Gees in a Nashville saloon. Rick Davies' songs sounded the best on EITQM, where
    the prod. and
    the arr.
    were more Expansive.

    5 - Jeff Buckley
    4- Prefab Sprout
    3.- Thomas of the Dolby
    2 - Budgie
    1 - Associates / Stranglers / City Boy / Van Halen / Shirley Bassey / Dixie Dregs
which isn't a dig at u at all Justin

Like the keys here and the country feel, but musically it goes nowhere in my view, especially at the end. Sorry, fans, but I never warmed to this album back in the day - didn't think the band were happy with it either. P.S. My song ref, Seven Seas, is by Barock Project.

Another Man's Woman is not a favorite of mine. I prefer the 'tone' of Crime Of The Century.' Supertramp - from this point on became less and less a prog band and more and more of s pop band. Now that's all a matter of opinion - but to me - I was hoping this album would go further into the prog world - hoped that they would get more experimental. So when it came out I didn't completely pan the album - I just a felt that it was a lurch backwards. An album that to me has not one standout track. Ten songs of medium minus to medium in quality and not ONE great track. Not even in Crime's ballpark this album started my big Supertramp fade. On subsequent albums there is at least one song better than EVERY song on this album. In the years (40+?) this album has only continued it's slide in my view. I did go to the Inglewood Forum (where The Lakers used to play - a large arena) to see Supertramp circa '77 and lo and behold I had front row center seats. Of course I had a great time hanging out with my best friends at a concert but we all came to the same conclusion - they were becoming big and were beginning to soften. They had found their niche and riches were now just around the bend. With few exceptions - when bands get big - and are heavily played on radio - it means that a large segment of society likes them. It then also follows that if a large segment of society likes them the band will invariably be treading on more familiar turf and less experimental or groundbreaking material. Supertramp - after 'Crime' had become a medium band who created medium rock. Medium equals tedium - not premium. Goodbye Supertramp!

Bit of a jumble this I thought. And last track, S1, with a definite whiff of filler to it. Starts with a 'southern rock' lilt, musically and lyrically. Then breaks for that extended keys break... why. It wasn't strong enough to impress, but sure took up some time. And then settles into that repetitive end riff till fade out And that also not very strong. Yep, not a fan, not great, and too too long.
