    Really well explained - adding comments like' it's the F note that makes it sound minor' is very helpful - Personally It helps me remember it if I understand it. Thanks

      Thanks. Yes, it's always better if you can understand what's happening in a line. This will help you to use the ideas in your own playing. Glad you enjoyed the video.

    Just found your video. Started playing bass a year ago, going slowly. But love that you use notes and not just frets and string numbers. Would love to hear you play the whole baseline with the song in the background.

    Hi, thanks for the tutorial.
    A little hint: in my opinion, the third note of the main bassline is not plucked. He just start to slide.
    So, as you said is good to start with 3rd or 4th finger directly there to be ready.

    Excellent - Not sure if you are doing this but at start of verse, after the 1st double D (index on 5th fret on A string), then I ADD ONE GHOST NOTE E (4th finger on 7th fret A string) for a (shorter) 4th finger 5-fret slide up to A', as before.

    God, this is a fantastic video! Super well explained, with insightful tips plus some interesting comments, and not dragged ot what so ever. Coming from someone who plays other instruments and is super into learning the base, but doesn't know where to start and can't realistically get lessons, this type of thing is superb. Again super helpful, and all I've got to say is keep up the good work!

    Great vid, really clearly explained. Just watch Paul play the riff on camera on “ Macartney 3,2,1” and he plays it slightly differently. After the initial 2 D notes, he switches to to D string, sliding up a tone from the 5th fret to the 7th fret, then hits the top note F note of the riff on the G string, 10 th fret. Its more compact not having to slide up 7 frets as you do after the 2 initial D notes.

    Excellent instruction. I am struggling trying to keep my strings silent after the first slide more than any other problem. I need to build muscle memory for the technique. I am going to sub to you as you explain the sound theory and how you are an excellent teacher. Thank you. I tip my pint in your general direction.

    • @StuartClayton
      @StuartClayton  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I recommend using the fourth finger on your fretting hand for that first slide - that will enable you to mute the other strings with your first three fingers. If you play with the thumb of your picking hand resting on the E-string, that string will be muted as well. Hope that helps!

    Also - in 2nd bit of verse, after the double A A (5th fret on E string) I INSTEAD PUT MY 4th FINGER ON HIGH C' AT 10th FRET ON D STRING TO EASILY BEND IT, (not C; at 5th fret G string) - before the final A' (index finger 7th fret on same D string).

    I end up muting the F on the G string with my ring finger that’s on A(12th fret) on the A string, how do I solve this problem?

  • @Terrible_Peril
    @Terrible_Peril 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The slide is not plucked. It originates from the second plucked D at the opening of the line.

    • @StuartClayton
      @StuartClayton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The slide is plucked. It's subtle, but it's certainly plucked.

    • @Terrible_Peril
      @Terrible_Peril 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stuart Clayton you’re killin me, man! I just swapped into the “not plucked” camp after a lot of time listening closely and now I’m gonna have to do it all over again hahaha

    • @StuartClayton
      @StuartClayton  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, it's a tiny adjustment! Either way it's an amazing bassline!

    • @xngr
      @xngr 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the isolated bass track that you can find on youtube it sounds like it's not plucked, to my ear at least. The pick attack is pretty prominent and it's not there at all on the slide.
      Doesn't really matter all that much either way, just wanted to point it out for hair splitting sake.

  • @alf92ru

    Great video. How do you setup the volume of each pickup and the tone to make it sound so perfectly ?

    • @StuartClayton
      @StuartClayton  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. The best thing to do is to set the tone controls of your bass flat, use both pickups equally, and allow your hands to create the tone. If you want more warmth, play closer to the neck. Want more bite? Play closer to the bridge. Once you've done everything you can with your hands, try experimenting with the pickups - neck pickup has a warmer sound, more bite on the bridge pickup. When you've done everything you can there, adjust the controls on the instrument if you still need to. Your hands can do a lot without you needing to mess with the controls too much.
