My guest today is the British singer-songwriter and worldwide TH-cam sensation, Dodie. Our conversation felt so real and natural, and so very honest. We talked about the complications of coming off the touring experience, and how to navigate life in general. We also discussed writing lyrics, and Dodie described the process so very beautifully, saying: ‘writing lyrics is like therapy!’

What Dodie said at 6:00 struck me a lot. A a child, I *always* made at least one big error in my violin performances on stage, and I was convinced the audience knew it. Then a violinist of long experience on stage told me a valuable thing. Half of the audience won't know the piece well enough to notice the error. Of the other half, most won't remember it, and the few who do will assume it was a creative choice. And he was right - I'd ask around after a performance and those were the answers I got, even when the errors seemed glaring to me. Knowing this helped me reduce my stress and make fewer errors as a result.
But also, as the years have gone on, I've come to understand that it is the imperfections that can make a connection. Lots of practice is key, and after that, things that go wrong, or don't land, is being human. And your audience want to connect with THAT person.
I remember Dodie mentioning in her vlog that she regretted saying 'Dad!' on stage after one of her songs. But her fans got it, and loved the fact they got it (and in some venues yelled it out too).
Organic performance gives more connection than perfect performance (I think). And I think it's connection that we're all after. Jacob achieves it in his audience choirs, tending towards the idea of perfection. It's like touching the face of God. Hard not to burst into tears.
Dodie's music is at the other end of the spectrum - delving into imperfection, and all its uncertainty, doubt and grief and loss. It's like touching the face of Adam. And it's why we can't help but feel connected to her and her feelings. We've all been, or are, there, but she expresses it for us. Hard not to burst into tears.
I can't wait for the day Jacob decides he's going to write something that wrenches the heartstrings like Dodie can.
You're such a wonderful listener and conversationalist Suzie, this interview is a real pleasure to watch. Jacob's lucky to have a mum with such curiosity - we can see where he gets his from.
