I guess it has turned into a platonic/soul mate kind of relationship between them long before Pete met Michael and divorced Lynne. I have watched his interview where he hinted at this (Lynne pushing him to have a boyfriend). Utter admiration to Lynne for being loyal and devoted till the end.
Pete wanted Lynne to live her own life, so they divorced as way to protect each other in a way. Also Pete met Michael when they were getting separated. Pete and Lynne would never cheat on each other, ever. And they still loved each other until the very end. Pete said in a interview that it would’ve forever....

I saw Pete in an interview in 2003 where the host was asking Pete if he was married. He said, yes". The host ended up asking Pete, " in the same house? ". Pete said, " YES, IN THE SAME HOUSE! ". Later Pete said, " It's forever ". Then.... less than three years later..... Michael. That is why I cannot get my head wrapped around all of this!!!

In the end of the day, we’re not them, nor were we there when it happened, so we’re never going understand it. Also, I feel like we shouldn’t have a say on their relationship, because it was very private marriage and they probably would’ve like to keep it that way (or if Lynne decides to change her mind, I thinks she’s writing a book now, idk).
