This is Molly. Molly is a 9 month old Treeing Walker Coonhound puppy. Molly is very affectionate and loving. Most people do not realize this; but this breed makes a great family pet. The only thing is they need exercise and plenty of it. They also need calm, assertive leadership.
I believe all dogs need boundaries and structure. The most effective way to accomplish this is by being their leader. To me, the easiest method of showing a dog you are in control is through obedience. Obedience instantly communicates to the dog that you can ask them to do something and they must do it right then. Not only must they do it, we want them to want to do it!
Motivation is the key. The proper mix of praise and consequence is paramount. If done correctly, your dog will want to obey. Remember, we praise 20 times more than we consequence. We want our dog to want to obey. We want our dog to want to be with us. Become a balanced, loving leader and it will happen.
