Genius song. Not sure why I suddenly felt the need to listen to it but I’m glad I did. The opening seconds were like time travel, taking me back to the 16 year old who heard this song for the first time and adored it then just as much as he adores it now. It has a haunting sound that completely encapsulates the 80s for me.
Probably their best "non single" track, such a powerful melody, beautiful stuff. I am 51 years old and grew up on these two. So grateful for their music.
Neil Tennant said in his book One Hundred Lyrics & A Poem that this song was a hymn for the rejects of Thatcherism. In the 80's the Kings Cross area was a magnet for homeless people, prostitutes, drug dealers etc - all life's rejects. This was the first thing you saw of London if you travelled from the north to the capital, and the negative impact of Thatcherism was right in your face, immediately. I think this song was either released as a single very briefly and then withdraw almost immediately, or was intended to be released but was withdrawn - because its release coincided almost exactly with the terrible fire in the Kings Cross tube in the '80's. It was an unbelievable coincidence, and if you didn't know you could be forgiven for thinking it was actually about the event itself. The lyrics - "good luck, bad luck, waiting in a line...." "Dead and wounded on either side....." The lyrics, and the release date, are unbelievably coincidental and painful. I loved this song immediately when I bought the album for its powerful synth lines, but I can remember at the time being utterly speechless at the coincidence of events and the lyrics.
it was never released as a single. PSB were asked to release it as a "charity single" by EMI but flatly refused a decision for which I applaud them. This track and The Theatre from Very are very similar in both their beauty and their content ......
I will be more than happy to swap today’s London for 1980’s. We had our share of trouble like every other nations but it was just our trouble. We had the spikes we had the drugs we had the leather jackets but society wasn’t as f****d up as now. What have we done to our country!!!
Listening to this song brings all sorts of feelings, so many memories... Thank God I was born when I was born and was able to enjoy and love the 80's. Til this day, i refuse to enjoy anything else.
Please let’s go back to that time! Remember looking at the cover on the way home and reading the lyrics on the bed while playing it on the stereo. If you want to hear the tune you can call me at night when I’m home watching my favourite show. If I do not answer, I may have went out to buy milk.
This really is a work of art! It’s their best song, and the lyrics are haunting especially with what happened after at Kings Cross Station. Premonition? It’s a crying shame this was never released as a single.
They were offered to release the single - after the accident itself, for a charity purpose. Apparently, Tennant rejected the offer, as he thought it would be an inappropriate move
@@АлександрРумянцев-щ7д that is actually false. 1) Chris and Neil co-wrote the song…. So they never would have been ‘offered’ the chance to release it as a charity single. It would have had to have been their r idea 2) it was actually the tabloid newspapers that approached the lads to release it as a single .at the time,I was working in local radio, and I still have the cuttings from the local paper as I got to interview them .; 3) it was actually covered 20 years after the train station incident by a woman who’s known here in the U.K.
Man with burning coat. "Dead and wounded on either side, you know it's only a matter of time". The song and album came before the Kings Cross fire disaster, but it's the first in a line of PSB "predictions". They talk of Diana crying ("Diana dried her eyes, and looked surprised") in Dreaming Of The Queen, then she dies in a car crash. Then they drop Versace from the new version of Paninaro, then he died. I asked them about this once via the fan magazine Literally, their response was "Spooky".
Not that the war is over, we are still in fatigues. Afghanistan. Very topical. Theatre still hits me...northern parts and Scottish towns... We were in London/Tell it like it is Maggie: And, you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women and there are families.[I believe you believed that!]
It is eerie. A song about Kings Cross station and then said station erupts in flames. Burning men walking to a train covered in smoke. Dead and burnt on every platform.

For me, this stunning Epic Song is their Best, their finest Song to Date! It has so many Levels of Despair and Hope! The Words are brave and aspirational but suffocated by a genuine and emotional Despair and driven down by a nostalgic, misty eyed Avalanche of Sound!
I used to listen to this on repeat for hours when I was a teenager, I'm 51 now and it sounds as riveting now as it did then and takes me back to those days when times were simpler
I m pretty sure GOD has Pet Shop Boys on his IPOD !! Their music has always been amazing! Their music shaped me through the 80 s and 90s! Neil's voice was quite soothing back in the 80s. A brilliant example of Brit music n lyrics at its best. Kings Cross has great tunes n superb beats. Simply a artistic masterpiece.
good classic song of kings cross there where two bus route 468 and N68 on the bus route out of South Croydon bus garage in 2013 best song it reminds me of the 468 N68 .the pet shopboys was the best song top 10 in the charts more please
