Use a Torx 50 (t50) for this. I bought a t47 as instructed in the video and the bolt stripped out. I can't tell you the amount of time and grief that ensued trying to get that thing out.
This video is awesome. I changed my belt tensioner last night using this guide. Unfortunately, on my 2000 Ford Ranger, the radiator fan kind of mucked things up a bit by getting in the way, but I was able to just barely squeeze in there and get the old part off. The most difficult part was removing the old tensioner. Next up, I'll be repacking the bearings in my front wheels. After that I should be up to spec for VA's safety inspection. Thanks for making this video!
Thanks for the video. Saved me about $90 in labor and I was able to buy better parts cheaper than the garage. Only took about 2 hours, but having never done it, I think that was pretty good. Of course now there is a squeak on the right side, which is a common bearing issue so looks like I'll be at the garage anyway.
Thanks Mike. I used your advice and technique to change the belt on my 2001 Taurus. It was a breeze. Took about 30 minutes and I was done. Sweet! Thanks again.
I also want to thank yo for all the videos you have posted...they have literally saved me hundreds of bucks in being able to do it myself and not overpaying some mechanic 60-70 bucks an hour
Thank You 1A Auto for the informative video. Fun Fact: For anyone with a N95 mustang, 3.8 V6, the tensioner assembly torx bolt is a T55, and good luck getting it out without pulling the aluminum bracket's treads out along with the bolt.
You may want to check the belt tensioner to see if it needs to be replaced. Also check the pulleys while the car is running and see if any of them are wobbling which may cause this type of situation.
+Joel Lopez Thank you for you order. If you would like to leave us a review on Google, it would be greatly appreciated. Here's a link to our review section goo.gl/Id4soE
You may want to check to see if you may have received a bad tensioner. Usually a belt will sqeal if there's a loss of tention or if the belt itself is old.
+brandon hinton Thanks for watching. If any of our viewers needs to make this repair, we carry the auto repair part shown in this video on our website. Here is a link to them www.1aauto.com/1A/SerpentineBeltTensioner/Ford/Taurus/1AEBT00009?TH-cam&CTA+Comment&Ek6KicluHI
We currently do not have this vehicle in the shop to see where the tensioner is in relation to the alternator mounting bracket. You might need to remove it.
When belt tensioners start to loose their tension it may cause the belt to squeal. If it has the 3.0 we carry them on our website Part Number: 1AEBT00009 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Thanks Mike for the excellent tips on the Tensioner and the Serpentine Belt. For any of you guys out there that need to move the Tensioner on a later model just use the 3/8 inch shaft on the socket wrench. It fits perfect. It through me off for a while but when I looked with a mirror down inside I could see that there was just a square hole for something to go into. They sell special tools for moving the Tensioner but, don't waste your money. Use the tool you already have in your tool box.
It seems like there's no way to adjust the tension like older cars. If the belt slipping/squeaking does that mean the tensioner has to be replaced as the spring is weak or something like that?
There is a washer between the idler pully and the pulley boss. It appears to be adjustable. I noticed in your video there is a significant gap between the washer and the mounting threaded thing. Is it for alignment purposes? Or should I just screw it all the way till it stops? No other video on this subject ever mention it. I see the washer in different places on other videos. What should I do?
@69crued It would depend on the hourly rate of the shop. Our video shows you exactly how to replace this on your vehicle. We sell the serpentine belt tensioner on our website 1aauto.com Between the video that we provide and the cost of our replacement part, you should be able to save a great deal on money if you were to make the repair yourself. Hope this helps you out.
@rockstarcik94 If the belt is slipping on the pulleys it may cause an over heating situation. Usually if this were to happen the belt would make a screeching noise. You may want to check the simple things first such as checking the level of the anti-freeze. Hope this helps you out.
for those that just want to see it - the pic of what you need to remove the actual tensioner is at 2:28. Also, I think he says T47 torx bit but I haven't confirmed that.
Thanks for the video! once replaced, should the tensioner pulley move slightly back and forth when the engine is on/ the squeak is gone but i noticed the pulley moving a little bit.
@zznapz We currently do not have a video on that particular repair. We do carry the Haynes repair manual for your vehicle on our site, that should show you how to replace your timing belt. Here's a link to them on our website. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com/1A/repairmanual/Ford/Taurus/1AMNL00063/220145/1993
Good video. I have a 97 Mystique with the Ztech engine, and it squeaks most of the time. I think the tensioner is too weak, so I'll probably change it soon. The idler pulley has some melted rubber coated on it from the belt, so it's gotten pretty loose. I haven't looked at the tensioner that closely, and I need to know if the two bolts holding it on are the Torx type or the normal type with a head. If it's a Torx, what size is it? Also, how smooth must the idler be? It has a small scratch on it.
Thank you so much! I replaced my idler pulley and tensioner (and belt of course) in about an hour! I m p o r t a n t n o t e: My tensioner (1999 vulcan 3.0 ohv) was held on by a T50 torx bolt, not the T27 mentioned in this video. Other than that, easier than I thought it would be!
we fixed the alternator of our ford taurus 2002, and the belt is still loose. i dont understand what the problem is. please let me know what the problem with the tensioner might be
I have a 2001 taurus that has a persistent belt squeak that I can not get rid of, I have tried literally everything short of replacing the tensioner mechanism or installing a shorter belt. It is definately not any of the pulleys or the alternator making the squealing noise. The noise increases as you increase engine speed. belt dressing only makes it worse and I have cleaned the new belts and the pulleys several times, do I need a new tensioner?
Hello, I enjoyed your video. You have a way of explaining things in a easy manner. Easy to understand and you don't leave anything out. So when you mentioned that you need to "fast-forward" through your ratcheting because you think we might get bored... well, don't think that!! Because I want to see every second of every detail, so that it all makes sense to me. Maybe you have a slightly different approach or technique that I haven't thought of or haven't tried yet. You get the point, right? Now, you want to know what boring is? When someone goes on and on about something completely not on topic, like how they picked up the grandkids and took them for ice cream and blah, blah, blah!! Nothing against kids or ice cream but get to the point dude! LOL
hi..thanks for the video...my serpentine belt flew off the pulleys yesterday of my 2000 mercury sable 3.0 L DOHC Engine....there was basically no warning signs that it was about to fly off. the belt is in great shape and there were .no noises or anything of that nature...I checked all the pulleys and they all seemed to be in good shape...which leads me to believe that the belt tensioner somehow crapped out and got a second opinion and he thought the same thing so I am going to change it.... ..NOW my question is my sable engine is different than the one in the video...the power steering pump is where the alternator is and the belt tensioner is RIGHT UNDERNEATH IT...it almost seems impossible to get the tensioner up and out without pulling the power steering unit out...it seems doable but was wondering if you know f a workaround instead of pulling the power steering unit out?....Thanks John....

@@alewicke They are really difficult to see Anna, let alone access and replace. I was persistent in getting two of the rear plugs and wires replaced on my '93 Taurus - 3.8 litre but the last one, nearest to the passenger side of the car was impossible. My thinking is that one may have to end up removing the engine mounts and actually lowering the engine just enough to get to it. Very poor design for dealing with a routine maintenance scenario, huh?! I am just going to have to be happy with 5 out of 6 for now. It does run a lot better than before but I still cannot get that last one out of my mind. Also, I am pretty mechanically inclined and rarely surrender to defeat but this is very frustrating to say the least. Best wishes to you!
I have a 2004 Taurus SES and the tensioner is reversed. It isn’t on the engine block, it’s on the other side and when you pull back on it to release tension on the belt, the screw loosens on the pulley.
Great video! In my 1997 Taurus V6-182 3.0L OHV there's a squeak coming from that general area. One tells me it's the steering pump and another says it the water pump. Both expensive repairs. Naturally. :( It started squeaking intermittently a short time after it sat overnight, but now it's squeaking continuously and all the time. There is the usual "hiss" from the steering pump when I turn the wheel, but it does not affect the pitch or volume of squeak . I rigged a "stetoscope" ... //
I took off my idler pulley as it was squealing & as I did this, my tensioner fell off - the bold managed to break (my belt came off the other night - now I know why), and, I'm not sure how to go about using an ez out & get it out, at that amount of space allowed. I know I need to take off the alt, and power steering pump to get more room.. is there an easier way, as I'm not sure if my drill will be able to fit down there, to a drill (a fullsize Dewalt) a pilot hole for it.. any suggestions?
I have a 2003 ford taurus it has a pretty bad squeal to it I'm not sure what it is coming from I used belt dressing on the belt to see if that was it and it made it worse so I'm pretty sure it is a pulley since belt dressing causes more grip what ways can I narrow it down to which pulley it is does it all the time ac on are off, more when as tons change?
My tensioner wobbles as my car runs, I replaced the idler pulley because it was squeaking, it stopped for a few miles then started squeaking again. is this tensioner causing the squeaking?
i replaced the tensioner and water pulley with the (autozone) and took it to the shop to repair water pump replace timing belts and it broke the next day it could be the mechanic i've seen him correct the alignment and its correct what could be causing it?
i have a 2002 ford taurus, its been making a squeling noise and the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and belt have been changed, the only thing i can think of is taking the alternator out and get it tested for the bearings, the squelin noise does get louder when you increase in speed, i just dont know anymore...
If it's a 93-06 Ford Taurus or a Mercury Sable, you can follow this video to remove it. We carry them on our website 1aauto.com or you can call Tony @ 866-403-3393 Hope this helps you out.
My car is in the shop right now due to the rattling of my timing belt tensioner. They are INSISTING that my motor be pulled in order to put on the new tensioner. Clearly, this is not the case. What type of 'verbage' do I use to tell them that pulling the motor is not necessary? I am tempted to go get the parts and myself, but don't want to screw anything up.
We carry them on our website for that motor, here's a link to the 1993 E150 5.8 serpentine belt tensioner pulleys for your van. 1aauto.com/1A/SerpentineBeltTensioner/Ford/E150-Van/-/-/1993?ATony
Is it the same for a Cougar with the same motor? I mean it only makes sense that it would be, right? And in my case since it was just the belt that broke do I have to replace all those parts?
+David Caudill Hi David. It may be a similar procedure, however this particular part isn't listed as fitting the Cougar. Here is a list of the serpentine belt tensioners that we currently do carry that fit the Mercury Cougar. Hope this helps you out www.1aauto.com/mercury-cougar-serpentine-belt-tensioner/mo-c/472-105#TH-cam&CTA%20Comment&
Thank you so very much for your rapid response I greatly appreciate it. I went and got a new belt ( hope it's the right one ) and it's pretty chilly in the hills of S.E. Ky this mornin' so I'm gonna try to put the belt on... I got the diagram to go by but I'm no mechanic by no means. LOL Thanks again I will recommend you to all my friends cause you did take the time to respond and that means a lot.
Hi, I am changing the pulley on the belt tensioner on a 2001 Taurus. I picked up another pulley but the old one had a "washer cap" that I can see in your video. The problem is the washer cap doesn't fit the new pulley. I called the parts store and they told me I didn't need it? It looks like the cap protects the bearing and I am thinking they might have given me the wrong pulley? Is it needed? Please advise. Thanks
Thank you for the email. The cap is going to keep dirt from entering the bearing. While it may not be necessary it will help with the life of the bearing. I can not verify if they sold you the wrong one, you will need to take that up with them. Here is a link to the part in this video on our website. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393 www.1aauto.com/serpentine-belt-tensioner-with-pulley/i/1aebt00009?VideoReply&VideoReply&ATony
thanks for the video! when I was bolting down new tentioner on my 02 GT part of the threaded nipple from the timing cover broke off and i know i didnt over-torque bc i only set torque to 20 ft-pounds. Is there a way to fix this without having to replace timing cover? thanks in advanced!
Thank you for watching. You do not need to. When the belt is off spin all the pulleys by hand. If they spin fine and dont make noise there is no need to change them. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
I have a 99' mercury sable with a 3.0L vulcan, and me and a friend just replaced the plugs and spark wires on it to fix three misfires, an O2 sensor screaming bloody murder, and a bank misfire. The only problem we have now is this horrid knocking I get when I pull into drive or reverse. The knocking ceases when in park, or when in full motion (anything over about 15 mph's and the knocking stops). We narrowed it down to the belt tensioner knocking back. What could cause this?
@susienc919 HI, a bad tensioner pulley wouldn't cause the starter to not engage. If the starter has gone bad you should start with repairing it. We carry the serpentine belt tensioner on our website 1aauto.com/1A/SerpentineBeltTensioner/Ford/Taurus/-/-/2003 (copy and paste into browser).
@boeing165 If it's wobbling pretty good while the car idles there's a good chance that it needs to be replaced. We sell them for all kinds of vehicles on our website 1aauto.com Hope this helps you out.
I have a noise coming from the tensioner. A low knocking sound and the the tensioner is actually bouncing alittle. Have you ever heard or seen what im talking about before?
jeffsond It's hard to say without seeing it myself, but it sounds like the tensioner might be worn out or loose. If that's the case, you'll want to replace the tensioner. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
Okay, the subject title says 1993 to 2006, but 45 seconds into the video, the narrator says 1996 to 2006. I have a 1995 3.0 with 60K miles that's rattling like the dickens! Hopefully this video will apply.
lol, it was fast forwarded every time I'm trying to see the T47 tool used. I don't have that kind of bit or anything to get in there if I did. Going to have to look that up. Also I'm unsure if that is the exact size of the bit I need.
I am confused?? You state in the video this will cover from 96 and up years, but the narrative says different. I have a 95 Taurus, and it is different than in your video. Can you help me with a new video, or a link for my '95??

How do I tighten the fan belt on A 2007 Ford Torres
Got an 05 Ford Taurus. Thank you for putting up this video. Pretty sure it will save me a minimum of $80 in labor from some other place.

In my 1997 Taurus V6-182 3.0L OHV there's a squeak coming from that general area. One tells me it's the steering pump and another says it the water pump.
Both expensive repairs. Naturally. :(
It started squeaking intermittently a short time after it sat overnight, but now it's squeaking continuously and all the time.
There is the usual "hiss" from the steering pump when I turn the wheel, but it does not affect the pitch or volume of squeak .
I rigged a "stetoscope" ... //
@Downyoceanhon You may want to take a look at the fan, to see if there's anything worn on it that could be causing a whirling noise.
The tensioner assembly affects all pulleys
i replaced the tensioner and water pulley with the (autozone) and took it to the shop to repair water pump replace timing belts and it broke the next day it could be the mechanic i've seen him correct the alignment and its correct
what could be causing it?
good video helped us to figure out how to put the belt back on the car we had problems with the belt after putting in a new power steering pump
i have a 2002 ford taurus, its been making a squeling noise and the tensioner pulley, idler pulley, and belt have been changed, the only thing i can think of is taking the alternator out and get it tested for the bearings, the squelin noise does get louder when you increase in speed, i just dont know anymore...
What are the torque specs I know the 1997 Ford Taurus tensioner is 40-55; what about the pulley?
If it's a 93-06 Ford Taurus or a Mercury Sable, you can follow this video to remove it. We carry them on our website 1aauto.com or you can call Tony @ 866-403-3393 Hope this helps you out.
Excellent video! I'm now prepared to do this job. Thank you very, very much!!!
changed my belt, then a clicking noise came out of nowhere from around the belt area..Any idea what I need to focus on to get replaced?
My car is in the shop right now due to the rattling of my timing belt tensioner. They are INSISTING that my motor be pulled in order to put on the new tensioner. Clearly, this is not the case. What type of 'verbage' do I use to tell them that pulling the motor is not necessary? I am tempted to go get the parts and myself, but don't want to screw anything up.
@micalop0341 If you haven't tried to spray some penetrating oil on the bolt. You could try that to see if that helps to free it up for you.
We carry them on our website for that motor, here's a link to the 1993 E150 5.8 serpentine belt tensioner pulleys for your van. 1aauto.com/1A/SerpentineBeltTensioner/Ford/E150-Van/-/-/1993?ATony
Is there a video of how to replace JUST the belt?
I have to change the tensioner on a 95 sable. Is the torx bit the same number or larger? I can't find any info on the web
@mtlh05 T27, My mistake there, unfortunately I don't have the car to check. T47 looks right as far as the size I can see on the video.
@troy303 You could try to use an ez out bolt removal tool.
@Sugamuxi2012 Thank you for checking us out. Have a great day!
can you give me a estimate what this work would cost going to a mechanic?
LOL
Thanks again I will recommend you to all my friends cause you did take the time to respond and that means a lot.
Here is a link to the part in this video on our website.

thanks for the video! when I was bolting down new tentioner on my 02 GT part of the threaded nipple from the timing cover broke off and i know i didnt over-torque bc i only set torque to 20 ft-pounds. Is there a way to fix this without having to replace timing cover? thanks in advanced!
Do i need to change the idler pulley & belt tensioner when I change the serpentine belt?
Thank you for watching. You do not need to. When the belt is off spin all the pulleys by hand. If they spin fine and dont make noise there is no need to change them.

@2meaux Sizes of bolts can vary from year to year and even car to car.
@susienc919 HI, a bad tensioner pulley wouldn't cause the starter to not engage. If the starter has gone bad you should start with repairing it. We carry the serpentine belt tensioner on our website
1aauto.com/1A/SerpentineBeltTensioner/Ford/Taurus/-/-/2003 (copy and paste into browser).
does the car over heat if the tensinor is faulty/
@boeing165 If it's wobbling pretty good while the car idles there's a good chance that it needs to be replaced. We sell them for all kinds of vehicles on our website 1aauto.com Hope this helps you out.
Do you have a video on how to do this for a '93 Ford Escort?
Very helpful video man, greatly appreciated. Can't thank you enough for sharing this!
Worked out great. Thanks for the video.
Would removing the Coolant tank have made more room to work?
Yes!
It may move a little bit, it should be okay. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
Okay, the subject title says 1993 to 2006, but 45 seconds into the video, the narrator says 1996 to 2006. I have a 1995 3.0 with 60K miles that's rattling like the dickens! Hopefully this video will apply.
Is this the same as ford 500?
Can you show me the pulling diagram on 2007 ford touris 3,0 l engine?
@honeybunch2k6 It does require a little bit of strength, but if you follow our video you should be all set.
lol, it was fast forwarded every time I'm trying to see the T47 tool used.
+David Haugsted Sr Thank you for checking us out. At this time what you are viewing was assumed to be the most comparable video. We do not have a direct video showing a 1995 model at this time. 1aauto.com
@baldchicken11 This one will show you how to replace the belt. Hope this helps you out. th-cam.com/users/1aauto?feature=mhee#p/search/0/MOjHRxUfCpU
good video! is that T47 bit a plain old phillips head bit one can get at parts store?
You should be able to get one at your local parts store. Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393
