I once sought shelter within transient histories & landscapes and tried to call it home. While travelling recently through some beginnings and endings, I noticed that some things are buried in slow water because they
are tragic, and other things are buried simply so they would later be found. And that some shelters arn't shelters at all - but convenient markers along the way, written in a language I'm still learning to leap.

Saw Jackie in Tregaron's Talbot Hotel in Wales a few years ago. Was a magical evening. Paid £10 for CD of his which was to be posted with handwritten lyrics enclosed. After a few months, had received nothing, so wrote a caustic comment on his Myspace. 2-3 days later received the CD, 2 poems, a handwritten apology, and another CD. A true gentleman, a fantastic artist. Sorely missed. Heddwch.
woke up this morning, didn't feel so good . How true - tomorrow morning thousands of us will feel the same! RIP Jackie, somewhere over the rainbow.

Jackie was one of the loveliest men I ever met. I only met him in 2001, but we became good friends right up until his untimely death. I really, really miss him terribly..........
Saw him so many times but never tired of his stage presence and songs. Will never get tired of his music and his memory. He really is so much better than so many of the so called legends out there but thats how it works. Hopefully time will allow his music out more people. A man with attitude and some say hard man, but a kind man was the truth as long as you never pissed him off...
RIP, very sad, a great songwriter, criminally underrated.

You're still here, Jackie. Been a while, but you are still here.
I was always deeply touched by his music and never realized that there is no other artist that I have bought more records of until the day he died and I listened to every Jackie Leven/Balfour-, Doll by Doll- and Vincent Lone record I have. He left an enormous and extraordinary legacy and when I read of the few people who appreciated his music I understand that they will never forget him. His songs weren't for the crowd, but for them who were willing to listen. God bless you Jackie, I miss you.

I saw him in Burnley a few years back:twenty people in the audience.
He played for two and a half hours, and told some fantastic stories.
Possibly the most overlooked and underrated musician this country has ever produced.

I saw John Martyn a few weeks before he died. The terrestial bodies of our rock generation float away. Thanks for everything Jackie.
Heard about Jackie when Fairytales for Hardmen came out, but didn't really pursue his music until shortly before his passing. I feel like so much of that gap was wasted not getting to know Jackie and his music better in retrospect.

Me too. I loved Doll by Doll but never saw them, eventually caught up with Jackie in Leicester in 2011 (I think). He was great of course. I was planning to go and see him again 3 or 4 years ago and was shocked to found out that he had died. I am still shocked now. I have just sent a video of Poortoun with chords etc to my 20 year old daughter with a brief description of how great Jackie was. I hope she does the song because she has the right voice for it and sings with great expression.

Hey I'm a fan since, well, can anybody be a fan solely on the strength of a Zig Zag magazine article about the band Doll By Doll from 1979? Because it wasn't until 1983 that I bought the third Doll By Doll album, for three bucks, from the cut-rate bin at Off The Record in El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego. The last Doll By Doll album "Grand Passion", which I bought at the Virgin Megastore in Oxford Street in 1984 was mediocre, and then about nine years laters he came back as a solo artiste and I ordered every CD from Cooking Vinyl. A couple of them are autographed even.
