  • Surah Az-Zalzalah (The Earthquake) and Surah As-Saffat (Those who set the Ranks) are two powerful chapters in the Quran often cited in Islamic tradition as part of spiritual remedies, including protection and cure against sihr (black magic) and other forms of spiritual harm.
    Surah Az-Zalzalah
Surah Az-Zalzalah, the 99th chapter of the Quran, consists of eight verses and is named after the "earthquake" that will shake the earth on the Day of Judgment. The surah vividly describes the earth releasing its burdens and witnessing against humanity, emphasizing the ultimate accountability before Allah.
    Significance in Protection Against Sihr
This surah is considered potent for its spiritual effects. Its recitation is believed to shake the foundation of any evil influence, much like the physical earthquake it describes. The thematic connection between the surah’s content and its application in breaking sihr lies in its power to uncover hidden truths and nullify falsehood. When recited with sincere faith, Surah Az-Zalzalah is believed to invoke Allah’s assistance in breaking the effects of magic, uncovering its source, and dissolving its power over the afflicted person.
    Surah As-Saffat
Surah As-Saffat is the 37th chapter of the Quran and consists of 182 verses. It is named after the "ranks" of angels who stand in rows, ready to obey the commands of Allah. The surah discusses themes of monotheism, the oneness of Allah, the reality of resurrection, and the fate of disbelievers. It also recounts the stories of various prophets, highlighting their struggles and ultimate success through Allah's support.
    Significance in Protection Against Sihr
Surah As-Saffat is renowned for its protective qualities, particularly against sihr and jinn. The surah begins by invoking the imagery of angels, emphasizing their power and role in repelling evil forces. The repeated mentions of Allah's oneness and supremacy serve as a powerful reminder of His control over all creation, including any malevolent forces. Reciting Surah As-Saffat is believed to create a spiritual barrier that protects against the influence of magic, driving away jinn and nullifying the efforts of those who engage in sihr.
The verse that reads "And we have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps, and we have made such (lamps) as missiles to drive away the evil ones" (37:6-10) is particularly significant in this regard. This imagery of "missiles" being launched at evil entities is symbolic of the spiritual power invoked by the surah's recitation.
    Usage in Treatment
In the practice of Ruqyah, which is the Islamic method of spiritual healing, both Surah Az-Zalzalah and Surah As-Saffat are often included in the recitations performed over someone afflicted by sihr. These surahs are typically recited multiple times, sometimes along with other verses and supplications, while seeking Allah's protection and cure.
Surah Az-Zalzalah's recitation is particularly effective in causing the "earthquake" within the spiritual realm that disrupts the stability of any magic, while Surah As-Saffat fortifies the individual against further attacks, providing ongoing protection through the invocation of angels and divine power.
In summary, both Surah Az-Zalzalah and Surah As-Saffat are powerful components of Islamic spiritual practice for combating sihr. Their recitation not only seeks to break the influence of magic but also reinforces the individual’s faith, reminding them of Allah’s ultimate power and protection.
