Brian, I had heard this cover months ago when you first put it up, but never got to comment. So glad to see you're still putting out covers. I finally (after years of talking about it) did the Canadian Railroad Trilogy, my favorite GL song. Even played all the steel guitar parts myself. I could do well to take a few pointers from you! Your work never fails to amaze me. I hope you're doing well.
Very beautiful arrangement. The emotional sentiment is present and it registers. The powerful "Gord sounding" vocal combined with the unique instrumental combination leaves nothing out. Such a powerful well written piece commands the delivery of what the song truly says and here it is.
Ah Brian, this is the most heartfelt of tributes to Gord to come up on YT. ......a big thanks to you and JG for this fine version. ..and what great portraits of the Man himself, unafraid to show the decline.
Thank you Jim. We thought a piano/vocal thing might be different, and I'm glad people seem to enjoy it. That decline affects all of us sadly to varying degrees, and all we can do is deal with it as best we can :)
This is the most PERFECT tribute to Gord that I have seen. Obviously from the master Mr. Ekard. "Thank you!!!" WOW Brian and James BACK.... Incredible. I am going to send this to Rick Haynes.
Thanks Brian. It's been too long. I hope time is treating you well. This selection is superb. You've, once again, released a recording That Gord himself, would find worthy of a place on his album.
Once again, Fabulous guys! Nice arrangement Jim and Brian, very emotional vocal. Interest that you cut the vocal effects at 1:30. Shows how good of a vocalist your really are! Bravo! ♥
Wonderful tribute Brian. Don't think I ever heard this song before. The lyrics/story are very nice. GL was a master of that. Have a good rest of the day my friend. .....Nick
This is absolutely beautiful, Brian. Warm, perfect vocal, and beautiful instrumentation too. I can feel the respect and care that went into this recording. Love it!
Hey,Brian,Superbly done,as if you knew exactly what Gordon was going through.I still do this one in my own rendition, which ie eerily much like yours!I do it with a guitar and harmonica in spots. My hats off to you Are you C a nadian?Just curious.I am 74 and a half and still busking!(lucky me😢).Portland,Me. Area.Music keeps me alive, otherwise,I'd just as soon join Gordon(except for two grandcildren).Once I built a railroad ,made it run,...Buddy can you spare a dime?.Railroad Triogy was znd is one of my favorites!God soeed, man!
Thank you John. I'm from San Diego, and Jim is from Ontario so we just send tracks back and forth and Jim puts it together. Still busking at 74? That's a man that loves music. Take care.
I tried posting an addendum to your reply Brian but it never showed. I wanted to say that we are on the same page regarding Jimmy. When he posts his works here we can rest assured that it will be something to take note of. Together with his skill as a multitalented musician he integrates his visionary skill and it is clearly evident here. When Gord wrote "I'm Not Supposed to Care" it was about his departure from his Son who was being taken away. The visual aspect in this production, particularly the manner in which the photos are selected to fit the sentiment is most impressive. Gord is leaving us his fans, friends and family; saying goodbye. Yes, we are all there, the day of his funeral standing in line waiting to enter St. Paul's Church in Orillia, Ontario. It's raining. It's for us. Were are the "somebodys waiting outside in the rain."
This should have been the new voice for the Lightfoot band (2024-end), “not” that Andy Mauck guy they have now, and listening to Brian’s covers of Lightfoot’s songs, including this one proves it. If the Lightfoot band wanted to keep Lightfoot’s music alive with a decent voice and rhythm player, they should listen to this guy’s you tube videos, and perhaps consider hiring him without hesitation, and if they still want to keep Andy, demote Andy to back up vocalist or understudy. Brian Ekard is the “only” guy with a voice that could win over the Lightfoot crowd to a cover version that is truer to the original, and will hopefully leave them with a memory, especially with the real Lightfoot dead and buried forever. His voice is much closer to Lightfoot’s voice than Andy Mauck’s is, and while the band is friends with Andy, and are more used to his presence, I feel that Andy’s contribution may come of as being more of a parody, than as a tribute. If the band does the right thing and hire Brian as their need lead vocalist and rhythm player, they can become a bigger hit with the audience than they already are. If they don’t, we’ll, I feel that someone should make a CD out of these studio covers, and release them as album. I know I would buy it. As for the band and Andy Mauck, while they are claiming to keep Lightfoot’s music alive with new performances and fun and enthusiastic stories, I feel they are putting on a memorial tribute that is secretly writing it off, or phasing it out, as the surviving band members may to some degree have felt shortchanged about performing under Gord’s shadow as furniture pieces, and want to have their fair share of the limelight. Oh well, anyways a great outstanding voice performance by Brian as always and some great piano and keyboard contributions by JJ.
Perhaps there's more that goes into Lightfoot's band still performing (something we should all be grateful is even still happening at all, I might add) than you are aware of.
