    Glad to see a new video. In North America designing and engineering these are a lot less prevalent than Europe. This is amazing to see in a 3D model, I guess its basically a giant pitch propellor slapped on a turbine, in its most basic principles

    Instead of using power electronics to convert the variable-speed generator output into the constant grid frequency, can't they just use a CVT in the gearbox (like in Subaru station wagons and with jet engine 400 Hz constant-speed drives, which have both proven to be very reliable) controlled by communication electronics to ensure that the output shaft is at a constant frequency in sync with the grid? That way, there are fewer losses of useful energy from having fewer conversions. Also, it will make wind power have the advantage of having frequency inertia just like with conventional power plants and hydropower.

      @koharaisevo3666 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Supposed the wind is slow so you reduce the gear ratio to increase the output speed, the already weak wind is now has to work much harder, probably stalling the rotor, it's not really a good situation. Also the phase of the whole wind farm has to be in sync in other for the power from each wind turbine to merge at the substation, and the need electronic control.

    Just a small note, in the animation from 0.35 and further.
    The blades are turning the wrong way.
    The old wind mills did turn that way.

  • @00crashtest
    @00crashtest 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I also forgot to mention Toyota Priuses, Honda Insights, and Chevrolet Volts, all of which also use a CVT (albeit not an unreliable belt-and-pulley one used by Nissan and VW). All of the CVTs mentioned outside of the parenthesis have also proven to be very reliable. CVTs are one of the best inventions for enabling one shaft to be constant velocity while the other is having varying velocity from a totally mechanical means. This means fewer energy losses due to not having to do power conversion with rectifier-inverter sets for example. Wind turbines should all incorporate CVTs as standard so that the generator rotor can be constant-speed just like with conventional combustion power plants and hydropower.

    Wind turbines are more efficient if they are built close together. You can probably work this out yourself. They can, as already said elsewhere, have aeroplane wing tips to add efficiency.

    So you have non-renewable blades that get buried in land fill when they are damaged or lifed out.
    Then you incur frictional loses through the gearbox.
    Then you incur electrical losses through the invertor.
    This is all sitting on land that may have cleared of trees/vegetation and displaced or killed animals that use large conrete footing.
    Then you dig trenches or run overhead power lines to the substation where you incur more electrical losses through the transformers.
    Then you dig more trenches or run more overhead power lines, usual long distances ( the longer the distance the more electrical losses through resistance), to another substation.
    And if the wind isn't blowing it's all for nothing.
    Or if the wing is blowing to fast it's all for nothing.
    Or if it's too cold and the blades ice up it's all for nothing.
    And because of that variance in supply the grid cannot rely wind turbines to cover output so traditional power generation covers base load.
    Mean while which way have your power bills gone?
