  • In the first of the new abandoned Ireland series I take you on a full exploration of a forgotten, abandoned castle that was later a mansion and then home to an order of nuns. It now lies near a quiet river and forest, which hides its beautiful Gothic architecture and the stunning main tower.
    Don’t forget to Like and Subscribe to not miss our future explorations!
    I am an Urban Explorer or "urbexer", photographer and TH-cam creator with an academic background and passion for history, Cultural Anthropology and English with a focus on Celtic Studies. I grew up in a creepy looking 1800s home that later became the abandoned "haunted house" of the town. In 2016 I made the decision to start photographing and capturing on video these abandoned locations that I explored until then as a hobby. My recent focus has been on once great mansions, asylums and lost places. Currently I travel across the US, UK and Ireland to allow you to experience these places through me. I hope you enjoy the journey as we shine a light upon these forgotten places.

    There amid the enchanted timbers hides an edifice, alluring in its taunting of time's arrow. Having crested the arch. What would they that made there their home ever had thought of this surely non-existent distance, the dancing of days? Would they even have? And yet, all in good time, draws us, not still, but more with the temptation of a many, great unknowable tales of antiquity, told no more, but kept for all eternity enchanting forest lore. This is the thing we are here for!

    Your videos of these places never cease to captivate me. I'm not sure how much time I would have to spend there, myself, to feel I had enough time to drink it all in. I had taken note, as you did, of by how many years the original "fortress" sections of these castles, out lasted the later 19th century additions. This has been consistent from place to place. There was a significant difference between the construction of the building portions that served as protection, verses those built to provide a carefree life of luxury and privilege, despite the materials "seeming" to be the same. Once again, an impeccable choice of background music. Thanks for sharing your discoveries. I hope you're able to make your way to all of the other remaining ruins.

      I think you're right. It seems like things were built to last. Then again, they made the walls very thick too. On the trip I've had some mixed luck. Some angry bulls, security, etc. More's on the way, though! Thank you for the continued support.

    King Edward 1st built castles in Wales and Ireland to control uprisings... this Castle / mansion is probably a mixture of both ... but i don't know because most of the construction is brick now bricklaying didn't come into construction work until the 15th century... Hampton Court fine example prier to from 1066 al castles were built of quarry stone and inside the 12in walls would be a rubble filling lime and cow manure mortar ... now look at the inside walls all plastered modern by standards.of buildings in 18th= 19th centuries.. timber plinth above the windows and doors -- not a medieval building stone was used erected by master stone-masons also maybe a fire destroyed part of the lower living quarters hence the abandonment.... i wonder what order of the Nuns was called that occupied this property ?? You know your stuff! I have actually been to Harlech, Conwy, and Caernarfon castles. Truly massive and breathtaking views and constructions. I think you are right that this, like may Irish mansion started as a medieval tower and probably grew by brick additions in the 1700/1800s. From what I know the nuns were from the continent. I think France. The fire theory holds water as I did notice burn marks outside of just fireplaces. @@DesertifyUrbex Yes, and that would be my father and I, as we often go to these lost places to explore, to study the architecture; to enjoy the archaeology - as most of these sites are built upon ancient foundations going further back than the castles and towers themselves. Nice to have narration describing some aspects of the place. A sketch of the layout would be nice, showing the older and newer sections, which rooms and hallways were for what. Interesting, nature reclaiming what was hers, since Man elected to no longer use it. Seems like such a waste, a magnificent structure like that gone to ruins, its history erased.

      Thanks Dave. Sadly not a lot was recorded of this one, but that's a great idea to add a layout of the building if it exists. Of all the 30k castles of Ireland, most now rotting away, this one has to be one of the most unique and endangered.

      @davesmith5656 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@DesertifyUrbex - I'm not very good at compliments; I subscribed and liked, so that's my approval. What I had in mind wasn't plans dating back hundreds of years, but a block sketch (with a ruler or not, only approximate measures), showing entrances and what look like principal structures, refined or tidied up back at your office. It's not easy to do (for me). Architectural programs get far too involved, but basic principles of how to sketch aren't hard. Then as you narrate, you could describe and orient us a bit more, to add to the overall impression. Some guys take drone footage of a building, which gives a good idea, but the video on the inside shows nameless rooms and hallways with little or no location given (e.g. only "2nd floor, a room", which doesn't say enough). A good drone photo might be useful to refer to as you narrate. In this video here, you show the steps in a tower, which is very cool, but no indication of north or south. It just seems to me that it might be worth a few seconds of a video to put up a sketch or photo with a compass indication, and in the narration give us some sense of the location of the shots as you take them, or a brief text overlay done in editing (e.g. "south one of two towers, 20 feet up"). Your vids are among the best for the shots, slow panning, narration, atmosphere and chosen subject.

      @DesertifyUrbex  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wow, thank you. I am quite lucky to have viewers like yourself. This is a very good idea and very timely. We just got a drone and are in testing phase of using it, so this is all very doable. Good work and presentation. But it strikes me as a bit off and odd, look at all the brick work. If it is as old as claimed, it means the tech with bricks is older then just the new stuff, and the red fired bricks seem to be the most common and the old style of buildings seem to have this old things covered and claimed to be younger then they really are. I do not know, just asking because it seems off and odd to me.

    • @DesertifyUrbex

      From the historic records I based the information off the tower is the main stone structure from the 1400s and has very thick stone walls which is normal for a building of the period. Over many centuries it was built upon with brick until the 1800s, and embellished, likely leaving little of the original building other than the tower core section.

      @@DesertifyUrbex Agreed. But still an idea you may want to look into. It may surprise you. Because if the same buildings you are taught in are as old as 1800, it gives the idea that this world was built for us in ways that have been hidden. Not because of what we can re-do today, but because if you look on the videos you show, they all have this red brick type showing up. I agree that the world is old, but no where close to millions of years. because I have never meet this million year old man that can verify the pretend science today claims. But the building style is as least 1800 that we can produce today. The same can be said about the roads that we build, and that today the roads, a person can spend their entire life repaving the same 10 miles. And it gets me to wonder, if the tech is real, and we have taken a step back and not forwards. It means that the tech that built the old buildings, were more advanced then today.
