  • Hello Shiny, Crafty People! Welcome back! Today I'm showing off a FANTASTIC 3D mask that needs no template! Just a simple rectangle.
    I have really enjoyed this design because it is so easy to make!!! Here's a link to the video that originated the idea (as far as I can tell) and which inspired me to make a more detailed tutorial: • Very Easy 🔥🔥3D Face Ma...
    Here's what you'll need to make this mask:
    Fabric (you can choose different fabrics for each side if you want)
    Matching thread (if desired)
    Elastic
    Silicone Toggles for the elastic (if desired)
    Iron
    Sewing Machine
    Scissors or Rotary Cutter
    Here's where I buy my elastic: www.amazon.com...
    Here's where I buy my silicone toggles: www.amazon.com...
    If I'm not recording a video, I can make one of these masks in about 7 minutes.
    If the mask as originally designed is a bit too big, you can always find an "in-between" size by using a bigger seam allowance. Try a 3/8" seam allowance rather than a 1/4" allowance.
    THE RATINGS:
    I rate this mask a 7/10 for comfort
    I rate this mask a 8/10 for utility or efficacy.
    And as for ease of sewing, I rate it an 10/10.
    Have fun making this cool & easy mask and, until next time, stay crafty!!

    I made 4 of these today as Christmas gifts. My daughter, who is a smaller human being, got one made with a 7x9 inch rectangle with 1/4" seam allowance. The first one I made was a 7x9", but with a larger seam allowance and it was too small. The last two were the normal 7.5 x 9.5" and they fit really well. I added wire inserts that I got at the local fabric store, and toggles. I made one more from a different pattern for beards and it was great too. Thanks!

    Thanks for using contrasting colours to allow us to see the folds. Have seen many doing this mask but yours finally got me clicking with that final right angle triangle turn.
    Toggles not sure I can get those here but love the hair pin feed concept.
    For those who don't use such hair/roller pins you can try simple flower wiring or fuse wiring and even larger size needle threader.
    Thanks for your effort.
    continually amazed at generosity of people online who have taken time to learn how to do a You tube video or simple presentation to guide us in a task.

    I love how easily I can comprehend what I need to do because of the way you explain! I only began sewing when masking began and spent a year of trial and error and lots of styles of masks. I even have fabric patterns cut and half made masks I found in a box. I stopped after awhile because, like you, I didn’t think I needed more masks. Eventually I put my machine to the side and brought out my beads and wire….now I have a pile of bracelets, necklaces and earrings and I need to restock masks for my house. Kids back in school and we need some new face shirts! I love how you explain and show up close, the proper way to fold back those corners! I’ve had so much trouble w that! I’ve made a couple in this style but always look wonky. Thank you for your lovely video and the motivation to get sewing again.

  • @Eiolgjen
    @Eiolgjen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    Thanks for continuing to show us patterns for masks. Some ideas: nose wire: I've been using the closure thing on a 12 oz bag of coffee, cut in half crosswise. I actually retrofitted my early masks to add the nose wire. I had opened up those masks enough to slide the "wire" in from the bottom, then sewed around it. I also added an extra layer, a rectangle a few inches smaller, on my masks, which can be a filter pocket, so I just sewed it to the inner fabric when I opened the masks to add the nose wire. I'm going to try this pattern of Tim's because it will stay away from the mouth better than what I used to make.

    I like the hairpin hack to get the toggles on! I use my small 3-3.5mm crochet hook through them and pull the elastic through the toggle. Lol Your way looks super easy and so does this tutorial how to sew it! Thank you!

  • @myhouse74
    @myhouse74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +99

    I now use 5/8" grosgrain ribbon in a matching color to put my wire on the mask. I just sew it on the finished mask inside and leave 1 end open and slide the wire in. ( I use rubberized wire which I turn the ends so that they are not sharp) After making many of the 3D style masks and other styles, it's so much easier to do it that way and I found most people almost never turn the mask inside out. And if they do the ribbon matches.

    • @myhouse74
      @myhouse74 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@lindajacobs1487 Yes it's plant wire at amazon. I was able to get it at Dollar Tree at one time but mine doesn't carry it anymore. I cut off about 4 1/2" and bend over the ends and crimp it a little then slide it in. Walmart is the cheapest for the ribbon.

    This is similar to ones I've been making but yours is so much easier! As far as it coming down when you talk, I have found if you adjust the elastic so that it is NOT centered, it greatly helps, if not stops this problem. First, center it just like you did, then adjust the elastic so it is longer on the bottom and it helps a lot. Thanks for this easier design. BTW, Loved the sound effects! :)

    Thanks for the video. I have made a couple hundred masks over the past, almost two, years. and this style was my personal favorite, but I recently lost it!!!!! Actually I lost my two favs. So you saved me the trouble of hunting through my patterns and trying to figure out which one it was. :-) . One of my tips is to make the nose piece removeable. I do a couple of things. First my husband makes our nose pieces out of flashing. He cuts them 3/16 in by ??? and files the edges smooth. I take a 1 inch (or so) piece of batting a strip of scrap fabric that is a total of 1 inch longer than the metal. My first step is to sew two button holes at the top of the front of the mask inside the stitching line far enough apart to miss the ends of the metal. I lay the center line of those pieces with the fabric down on the stitching line and sew the mask the way you did in the first step. After I turn the mask inside out I sew a box at the top, that encloses the button holes and makes a channel for the metal. I finish that mask as you did and insert the metal strip and adjust at the vary end.

    Now that I like! Thanks ever so much for showing us this. As a filter I have been using the hepa filter from some spare vacuum cleaner bags I have for as vacuum I no longer own. They are the very thin mebrane like woven tissue layer between the paper layers of the bags. Because they are so thin you dont need to worry about bulk or sewing heavier fabrics. I dont know how legit or efficient they would be but so far thats what we have been using and with no problems at all. I have just been looking for a new design as I keep fogging up and as we are now back to having to wear masks again long term in the uk I thought I would attempt to make a new batch of different design ones. Me too! I grew up in a single-wide mobile home and I love the sound of rain on a tin/metal roof. It's one of my favorite parts of our upgraded workshop!

    I love this pattern. You are a wonderful instructor and I thought that the rain on your roof was nice (given that I live in SoCal and we don’t really remember what rain is anymore 🤪). Thanks so much 🙏🏻

    It was like you could hear the waves... :D
    I must admit I prefer your 3D mask with the diamond template, I've made loads in that design and find it simple, and quick to make and a great fit, and especially stopping glasses fogging up as work outside in hot climate so always in sunglasses or readers!
    I love trying alternatives though, so thank you for keeping posting :)

    Just finished watching this first video of yours. Before you said Florida, I had a hunch you were filming in the Sunshine State. Sounds (like smells) can take you back in time. Loved the 1960-80s rain showers of Ft. L!
    Fresh set of masks are needed and you delivered a thorough and entertaining tutorial. Simple enough (with that one slow-down and double-check section). Think I'll replay then head to my fabric stash pile. Thanks Tim. Will have to check your other videos and see what else you have.

    Simplistic one I’ve seen. I’ve been unsuccessful in other designs and gave up. Now that I’m back at work a few days a week I want something other than the blue med masks. I’d have to figure a pocket for a filter. Thanks!

We out here also go throuthe “is this right” scenario and it’s nice to know you do too. Finally, great explanations at the end!! Thank you! (Love the rain 😊)

    I think it would be great to use over one of those plastic mouth guards, which really help the breathing if mask is required for an extended period of time, airports and airplanes for example. Schools/ workplaces etc etc.

    Great mask....I've already made a bunch to upgrade my mask wardrobe, as well as made some for my ballet class friends (cats and dinosaurs in tutus and such prints). The only thing I would say is, be careful and don't hit the silicone toggles with your iron when you wash and iron your mask because they melt!

    Hi Tim. Love your videos. Really helped me get through Covid. I have to say this mask is cool. I'm making one right now. Also the rain in this video sounded like the ocean and went with the waves on your fabric. Thanks so much for doing all you do to teach those of us less talented how to create.
