  • Welcome to my second sound fitting video to the 7mm scale O gauge Heljan class 56
This time an ESU loksound V5 XL with screw terminals rathe than the V5 L with solder terminals
This decoder is loaded with Legomanbiffo class 56 sound files
This is a step by step guide/tutorial on sound fitting and testing

Can't thank you enough for this video, fitted two ESU cards after watching this and saved a fortune. Keep up the great work and thanks again.

Brilliant tutorial. I have an identical loco which needs chipping and I may just now have the nerve to do it myself! Being confronted with a spaghetti bowl of wiring is a bit daunting. I notice there are two 'Trk R' connectors, but you only used the one. Can you explain why that is please? Many thanks.

I’m pretty sure I used track right twice, otherwise I have not connected a set of pick ups

@@47606odin I must have missed that bit! Will have to re-look. Thanks.

I've re-watched that part Ian and the left red and black wires are wrapped and inserted in TL (the top connector). Then you insert both the red and the black wire from the right-hand side into the next connector down (TR). The second TR connector remains unused.
Now when you fit the motor wires, the grey and orange wire goes into Motor Plus and then you put the remaining orange wire into the first Motor Minus and the second grey wire into the remaining Motor Minus. I am assuming that with the track wires you could have split the red and black wires into each of the TR terminals, if you had wanted? I'm puzzled as to why, on the decoder, there is only one terminal for Track Left and two terminals for Track Right. Similarly, with the Motor terminals, there is one for Motor Plus and two for Motor Minus.
Last query (honest!), with all the lighting wires connected to the Aux Outputs, will the appropriate front and rear lights operate automatically dependent on whether loco is going forward or reserve, or do all the Aux functions have to be mapped to particular F numbers?

Great video thanks, is it completely necessary to add the resistor as I haven't done this on previous locos?

It is stated on the DC kits paperwork, so I have done it.

Hi, can I ask you a question re the Loksound 5L. Just fitted one to a Heljan Clayton….I can get sound/lights etc but no movement. What am I doing wrong. I have no instructions on functions as the supplier failed to return them to me when I asked him to check the address.

Well, there’s not much to go wrong on the motor connections as long as you have connected up the motor wires to the correct terminals. I don’t know the 5L chip or the Clayton model. Do you have a rolling road? If you have 2 motors on the loco are they actually trying to work but pulling or pushing against each other? If you have sound and lights then you have the pick ups connected correctly

Hi Ian,just watched and followed your class 56 installation which i may add was excellent as i was able to instal 2 loksound 5 chips for the first time. However i have followed your instructions to the letter and gone over the videonumerous times and i have a small error occuring.Everything is working perfectly apart from the direction of travel of the locos. All the wiring is checked and switched around etc but still going in the opposite direction to the lights.Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.Kind regards, Barry

The easiest way around it is to reverse the orange and grey wires from + to - and - to +. And the fact yours did the same as mine means you have done it right. There is a CV you can switch to reverse the direction, but it’s easier to swap the motor wires

Hi Ian, many thanks for your response .I have tried e
Very thing you suggested to no avail unfortunately.Do you know the cv number to reverse the light along with its value? Many thanks once again,Barry

Hi Ian great video as always, is it essential to fit a 1k resistor to the Class 56 I have wired the loco no problems but didn’t fit a resistor. Will not fitting one have a detrimental long term effect? Cheers

I’m just going by DCKits instructions. I never fitted them to my 60’s

It doesn’t hurt as it does provide overcurrent protection for the LED’s
