Alone Again opening notes still sends chills thru me. He tends to have some of the absolute Best album openers, bar none. This, and Professional are my favorites.
after hours is my absolute favorite weeknd song, in no part because he sings ‘this house is not a home to you’ in Twenty Eight, one of the bonus tracks from House of Balloons. So this one he comes full circle and I fucking SCREAMED when i heard that line the first time
man this shii came out right after breaking up with my high school sweetheart in college 😭 goated album foshitsho tho one of the good things to happen in 2020
This was literally me spring semester 2020 right before covid. Broke up with my girlfriend of 5 years and then got hit with this album. So yeah, this will always have a special place in my heart
This album legitimately changed my life and my whole perception of Abel as an artist. I knew he was good before, and I liked a lot of his songs, but this album really made me a massive fan of him.
@@polarhero57 this is a random comparison but imo this is similar to Travis Scott's "Astro World" & Kendrick Lamar's "DAMN", only because all of these albums are the pinnacle of their "originality" without being too "experimental"... idk if that's the best way to describe it, but either way I think these albums are also a double edged sword because it takes years of making music to do it again..
What’s so crazy was that I got out of work tonight and was listening to The Weeknd. Wanted to check out an After Hours reaction and I open up TH-cam and Bob coming in clutch with just what I was looking for. Thanks Bob!
Until i bleed out is still so insane to me, that production together with his voice is one of the most beautiful things ive heard in a while. The track is simple but does so much
@bobthepoppo if u can watch everything that came with this album it makes it 10x more iconic . Music videos, his red suit everything was perfect . The after hours mini movie too
Although I love Kiss Land, After Hours is my favorite after Trilogy, because it restored my faith in Abel, he proved himself that despite going mainstream he still had it in him completely to make both music for the industry and for the fans. After Hours cemented The Weeknd as one of my favorite artists of all time.
FYI: My Dear Melancholy serves as the unofficial prelude to this trilogy. There are lyrics and ideas on After Hours (and Dawn FM) that are connected to some of the songs on My Dear Melancholy. Several songs on After Hours were written while Abel was working on My Dear Melancholy. Having the context of what happens before the After Hours chapter makes the (narrative) listening experience richer, in my opinion.
I'm surprised you haven't reacted or listened to After Hours until now!! It's one of my favorite albums of all time. It really came at a time in my life when I really needed it.
Man, it's been a while since I've listened to this album front to back, I forgot just how incredible it is. The Weekend created an incredible atmosphere and story on this project that you get sucked into. As much as I love his older works, the production takes this album to another level... easily my favorite Weeknd project and honestly one of my favorite albums ever. Thank you for listening to it Bob 🙏🏾
"I lost my faith,I'm losing my religion every day Time hasn't been kind to me, I pray When I look inside the mirror and see someone I love" - This part always gets to me.
I love how The Weeknd's own discography lines up with the story. His darkest day where the trilogy mixtapes and slowly he's grown out of that into starboy, with a noticable difference in tone and mood. But there's some deep force inside him that always wants to come back to the dark corners of his mind, and I think his return to that sound parallels the fight of addiction, and how you can progress so much but that pull into the dark is still in him. That's why he references "going back to his old ways" so many times in the album. It's an amalgamation of addiction, sound, and toxic behaviors that pull him back from finding himself.
I'll never forget march 20, 2020 - I was driving back home from college after picking up all my stuff cause they said they were "temporarily" shutting down for COVID. On the drive home, my mom called and told me to come home before it got dark bc they just started a curfew and cops were making sure people weren't out past 10, which is when I started realizing it was SERIOUS serious. The fact that "Alone Again" was the name of the song I listened to start quarantine is just surreal.
This album has a special place in my heart, listened to it a lot during the pandemic Glad you finally reacted to it After hours, Faith and Alone Again my favourite tracks
Hey man, love your reaction man. I think everyone i know who has heard this album start to end always remembers where they were, what they were doing and how they were feeling at that time. Its the beginning of covid, the 21 March (UK) 2am, the setting for me was just perfect. Im accustomed to the feelings of my relationship that time, and the only person who i felt could relate to me and express my mixed emotions of sadness, loneliness, uplifting and cold (in your eyes, scared to live, save your tears) till darkness is reminded again in Repeat After Me, darkness consumes you in After Hours and darkness kills you in Until I Bleed Out. I genuinely cant explain why this album is important to me and will remain as the best album of my lifetime. PS: “i turned into the man i used to be” - with Starboy, his had made his fame and became glamorous and will living a flashy life. As youve heard, fame got him by taking his lyrical expressions and sounds of sadness and turned him into a star overnight. When he says that line, he literally means of turning into the man he used to be before all the glamour and fame, ie. Alone, Sad and Self-Loathing.
You’ve made my day. This is one the most incredible albums in recent years to me- it takes a special, well designed, thoughtful album to continually return to and experience the same emotions I did upon first listen. Listing to the Deluxe edition was a fanatic decision- I find Final Lullaby to be a beautiful closing to a deserving album.
Something people don’t talk enough about with this album is how strong it is thematically. In my view the album goes from denial (too late - scared to live) to delusion/cracks starting to show (blinding lights - repeat after me) to desperation (after hours), ending in realization of things ending in until I bleed out (also a metaphorical death). The thing I love about some of The Weeknd’s projects is how he uses really simple language and song ideas to string together concepts that have really strong theming and cool ways to interpret them if you dig beneath the surface, without ever sacrificing an enjoyable listening experience
Throughout 2020 and the entire lockdown that year all I did when I was off work I just roamed at night in the city listening to this album front to back and watching every live performance The Weeknd would perform during this era. I was even more hyped for this album drop cause I watched him in Uncut Gems when that came out in theaters and went through his entire catalog for this record. Man this is album is so authentic and so rich with sounds that feel like a roller coaster. Easily the best music experience I’ve ever had.
So glade you do this. You're so good at describing and observing things and this album is godly. Litterally tranceded first time i heard the whole album. even had to get myself merch from the album didnt even listen to the weekend before it.
I absolutely recommend looking more into Oneohtrix Point Never’s discography. He’s one of the more influential ambient/experimental electronic artists in the past 20 years. He also did the soundtracks for Good Time and Uncut Gems. His latest “Again” or 2011’s Replica would be ones to check out. Love the reaction Bob, you shed a lot of new light on this album for me, Faith is one of the best produced songs I’ve ever heard.
My top weeknd album but who here can agree that the live vevo performance of alone again is waaaay better than the recorded version. What I got from faith was that he only feels something when he’s on all those drugs maybe just a piece of happiness . When he’s coming down is the most when he feels alone because he’s unhappy when he’s sober. Like in the song coming down on house of balloons he mentions when he’s coming down is when he feels alone and when he feels the most pain. which is why he calls on that girl when he’s coming down to get comfort. Also you’re gonna looove dawn fm. The transitions are sooo good.
Love this album, so cinematic and such a cool story, and once you go through all of his discography I feel like this album hits even harder because you can see the full journey that got him to this point. An example would be him saying "Cali is the mission" on The Morning from his first mixtape House of Balloons then on Tell Your Friends he says says "Cali was the mission" and this is off Beauty Behind the Madness (which is the point when he really blew up commercially), and then to this album where on Snowchild he says "Cali was the mission but now a nigga leaving" leading into Escape from LA just really shows how his goals and what he wants in life has changed as he achieved those goals.
Hi Bob! Big fan. I’m currently a sophomore in college and recently I shared your channel with one of my classes because a discussion about everyone’s love of music came up. Hopefully you gain a couple more subs. While I love hip hop as much as the next guy, if you’re beginning to journey into music you have yet to listen to in general, I’d love to see you react to Innerspeaker, Lonerism, or Currents from Tame Impala (or all 3). Would also love to see Bandana, Pray for Paris, or maybe a Pharcyde album in the future. All the best!

33:19 agreed completely. Nighttime, or After Hours, is my favorite time to drive and just escape mentally and emotionally. It's like a gift to do so now, given im married now with a 6 month old.
One of my absolute favorite albums! In the alternate Deluxe version, there’s also an In Your Eyes remix feat. Doja Cat, as well as the Blinding Lights Chromatics remix, on top of the remix with Ariana Grande. I hope you will check those out also!
Looking back, After Hours has aged like fine wine 🍷 An album that sounds like it came straight from the 80s but still sounds fresh and new. And to think this was technically my first album I ever experienced from front to back and loved every track 😭😭😭 (I know I was very spoiled lol.) 😂 Seriously tho, this album got me thru the hardest of time of my life in 2020. Bob I just wanna say thanks for cranking out so much content lately. U have been working through so much music lately its insane and u deserve all the praise in the world. Dont forget to take breaks! Cheers
One of the greatest albums of the 21st century in my opinion, a big part why it is so high on my list is simply the timing it came out and how impactful it was to my own life, and it truly resonated with my own personal experience at the time. Not to mention the production was spot on and exactly what I desired in production, an inspiration for my own creations. I am sure this album will stick with me forever. Great to see you react to it finally! As with your other reactions it was a pretty accurate interpretation.
i remember your travis scott- rodeo reaction ,where you said you love a good coming down from a high story. My instant thought was that you would love this album lmao
the line "I turn into the man i used to be" I'm pretty sure he's refering to the Trilogy Era, that character he created in the begining, you know, persuing lust and nightlife...
I remember hating faith cause I thought is was just some weird song. I didn’t even consider the second have of the song as like.. a song. But now i understand. Now it’s my favorite track on the album. So cinematic. Beautiful. This album came out march 20th 2020 i think. I remember having no school cause of covid and i played Minecraft all day with this album on repeat. Played it for a good 8-10 straight. Incredible album one of his bests.
Faith is definitely one of the more depressing yet beautiful pieces of music Abel has ever made. Dawn FM is definitely more uplifting as it’s a different phase of Abel, I can’t wait for you to listen. Edit: Also just saw your reaction to After Hours and agree completely, SUCH a good song on every front. From production to vocal layering. A perfect song.
Please please please go back and listen to his other alubms after getting caught up on the current trilogy. Very neat to see the progression in his catalog!
