Hello David, Great work!! I am from India. Like bees and bee keeping.. In my teen I used to keep bees and we're getting good honey..Then I was in Kerala, South India. Now I'm in North India and busy with my Christian ministries and works...Still have a heart for beekeeping...Your videos are adorable..
Hi David. I live in northern MN. I wait until after fall honey harvest to feed bees (you don't want any sugar water in your extracted honey). Yes, bees suck down everything I feed them very quickly. Yes it stimulates egg laying. We've learned however, that 1:1 syrup is too runny for fall. The bees don't have enough time to dehydrate it before cold weather, & it leads to excess moisture in the hive. That's why we use 2:1 syrup in fall.
I started feeding my bees what you share in this video. They love it! My hive is going through a 1/2 gallon every 24 hours like clock work. Thank you so much!
Hi David, Just the other day my mother-in-law gave me a half-gallon jar that is short and square and has a narrow mouth and is made in Canada. It fits great! This will go on my hive tomorrow. You keep my bees happy, they might even like to watch you.🤣😂
Hi. I’ve learned so much watching you..my neighbor was a beekeeper she recently moved into a retirement center and gifted me her equipment (no bees).. I’m trying to learn as much as possible before spring.. and will now be on the look out for that jar. Thanks for your dedication, teaching us how to be better beekeeper.
Hey David! I’ve been following you for a couple years. This recipe works great. I use a two quart jar and one colony will drain it 24 hrs. This colony was struggling a bit in population and drawing out some frames. It’s exploding now. The recipe is easy and the bees love it.
Ball makes a wide or narrow mouth quart and a half jar. They are in the canning section at feed stores and Walmart. They come 6 to a box for about $18.
David.... For us Scottish, British, UK' ers whats this Quart Stuff ???? Yes, some of us are old enough to know Imperial Measures, but we do Fluid Ounces UK measures (!) Quarts, US Gallon, mean nothing to us !?! Can you remember you have a World Audience, so Say " F / C " Temps... Jar Size Volumes in Fluid OZs / MLs etc, etc... Off my Soap 📦 🤔 Did my Bees today, WoW, they are doing Great in this my Second Year of being a Beek ! 😎 Yes, did my Varroa Mite Treatments (different types.) Oxalic Acid, then Apiguard. Now they are having 1: 1 Syrup, a bit of Pollen Patty, and some Fondant. They eat it a bit, but we are still having local Nectar, Pollen seen coming in... So Brood is being laid, in newly made Wax Comb.... 1:1 Really gets Wax Drawn nicely. 👍 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2022. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
I remember the caterwauling when you went 10p/schilling. You know a quart approximates a litre. Imperial gallon? Still gaining/losing weight by the stone?😅
I started feeding soda and syrup to ants outside and I’ve recently attracted about 3 bees and they are loving it!!!! Ur video popped up and I love that too! :)
I'm lucky enough to have 1/2 gallon small mouth jars. I even have the old blue ones. They're great for feeding bees. I use them for kitchen storage and making sun tea too!
Thanks for the video. I found one of those jars with a small mouth in my canning room this weekend it was my mother’s when she was canning. I actually used mine to store some honey.
I like your feeding covers. Going to pull my supers I have left on this next weekend and start with the feeding. Good tips with feeding in the fall, I always use top feeders.
My colonies tend to go through 1.5 quarts inside of 24 hours. Yesterday they had it all in the frames within 12 hours. Some of these hives took 3 days to go through the same amount several weeks ago. It is funny how that works sometimes. They know what they want.
I use 1 gallon buckets With a 60 micron mesh stainless steel. Bees suck those down in 1 week usually. I put 2 one gallon buckets on top in box like bruce is doing.
Yeah Mr Burns I enjoy looking at your videos and watching them I am a subscriber my question is how often do you clean your equipment your jar feeders your round plastic feeders or the square gallon feeders or any of your beekeeping equipment your hive tool your gloves and how important is it to clean all that stuff thank you for taking time to read my question have a good day and I look forward to more of your videos and by the way I'm in North Carolina the mountains watauga county thank you again
I did see the bees of winter bees and is the way to get rid of pests other than hurt my bees in the winter cold can not open my hive but I put on the winter be kind
Hi David How often do you feed them before winter? And when do you stop feeding? Thank you for your always helpfull tips, keep them coming👌🏼🙂 my first season as a beekeeper wil start spring 2023 and i'm very excited i plan on starting with one hive but i already got 4 houses ready with frames and all. In Denmark the winter weather can be cruel bees
Thank you David for the video. I never thought about leaving an opening at the top and I was always running out in the deep snow to remove the mouse guard and clean out the entrance. My hive was robbed and it's the 3rd week in Oct. Not much food left for them in the lower box. Will a quilt box save them from starving in the winter? What can I do to save this hive. I live in upper MA. Nor'easters are common where I live. Any help would be appreciated.
Good questions, I'm publishing a new video in a few hours that will help answer some of your questions about why your bees may die this winter. Be sure and subscribe and click on the bell so you will be notified when this video comes out and how to find it: th-cam.com/users/DavidBurnsbees
Hey David I hope this reaches you. I like what you’re putting into the sugar water. But I have been on a lot of the suppliers and can’t find the 3 products you use. If you have e them for sale or k is who does would you reply thanks
I have been using 1/2 gal jars for a long time. They were made many years ago the wife has some of the green Ball jars in 1/2 gal from 100 years ago all smallmouth
Dave I'm in Southeast Texas kinda mild winters here what is your sugar water mixter I usually by bee feed in a gallon jug is that ok for winter feeding
Sure, but that's the time small hive beetle will LOVE them, so I personally would only do that if: 1) I did not have a SHB problem and 2) My bees were protein deprived.
Good question because there seems to be several protein powders and I have heard some ferment ? So David can you answer the question so people aren’t buying the wrong type ?
This was great information. I live in northwest indiana and this is my first year keeping bees. I’ve been feeding my bees in the top like you do using 3 - pint size jars and the bees are sucking it down so fast. I need some of those half gallon jars you have. 😬👍🏻
I believe you! The bees I keep at the community garden have been busting through a quart of syrup every 2 days for six weeks! Only recently did they start having leftover syrup after 2 days. I'm curious that this hive is sitting right on the ground. Isn't that inviting walking and crawling bee-eating varmints to bother the hive?
HI David- I tried the protein powder infused sugar syrup in a frame feeder this year and I found the hive beetles lay eggs all over the bottom when the sugar sytrup dries up and leaves a thick layer of protein/sugar "goo". I can't use the jar feeders so will have to find a different way. Any suggestions? Thanks for the info!
Hi David, Love your videos. We have learnt so much. When you have a large populated hive at this time of year. How do you reduce this to a single chamber colony. In your video you added a super of honey to give them space and I assume you will wait for the drones to vacate and the summer bees to die off. Here in the north country cold weather is very close and we try to have our colonies reduced by now, no time to wait! What would you do? Thanks. Keep the videos coming.
Hi David I have two deeps now, can I add a third deep this time of year to increase my bee population,I live in northern Ohio. Also ball canning company makes a 1/2 gal. Jars.
I am excited to feed my bees pollen this way rather than pollen patties. But, my question is: I want to do a Demaree split in the spring. I only have four hives and that's all I want....just a hobby. If I feed this way to produce and abundance of bees, then won't have a stronger tendency to swarm come spring? Secondly, with an abundance of bees come spring, how could I do a Demaree split?
I have the burns feeder board. I was thinking about doing 2:1 sugar in one hole and 1:1 in the other.. I'm wondering your thoughts on that and should I use the additives in the 2:1 as well
David while using formic pro Can you still feed your bees 1 to 1 sugar water and protein mix or should you wait to the treatment is done thank you Charlie have a good day
Hi David. I’ve never added protein powder to my feed but I’m intrigued. Seeing it settle a bit on your caps has me concerned though. I have the hive top, well style feeders from Mann Lake. I wonder if the powder would settle so much the bees couldn’t access it and then it attracts shb in my feeders. Thoughts?
Hi Kathryn, well as you can see in the video the powder did not keep them from consuming it all, and a bee is tiny so the small amount of protein that is mixed in the water will make it to their gut.
Hi David! I love your videos! They are so helpful. I am a new beekeeper this year. I got a couple of nucs in April & live in north central Arkansas. The biggest problem I am having is determining spacing & timing. One of my hives currently have 2 brood boxes & 1 super. The other just has 2 brood boxes. Both are getting really full. I have been feeding 2/1 since I got the bees except when the nectar flow was very strong. According to the weight of my boxes (very heavy) I am sure they will be going into winter well equipped. I worry if I keep feeding them, they will run out of room. They are not building any comb. Do you have any suggestions or insight?
David I do have a question. How long do you feed them like this? I've read that once the day-time temps are 50 or below constantly you should switch to candy. Is this true?
small mouth are the most common size in beekeeping and most beekeepers already have small mouth lids, example all entrance feeders are small mouth. Many commercial beekeepers use small mouth in their migratory tops. Large mouth jars and lids do not work well in most situations.
I attempted to use this idea adding the pollen substitute to my syrup. I use a top feeder super with floats. They didn't touch it & it started to mold. So I'll stick to patties for now. 👎👎
David I'm 81 years old and my eyesight's failing is the reason I asked if you'd send me that information so I could see a little clearer in my beatboxes but TH-cam's got my sound turned off so I don't know what I'm going to do about that I have a Gmail address but I can't tell you what it is right now
Hi Robin, can you ask someone to take a look at your gmail and TH-cam settings to get the sound working for you? Also you can turn on CC on TH-cam and read closed caption.
Ok, don't feed bees with a boardman style entrance feeder, guess I'm missing something. Have fed my few hives with an entrance feeder for a number of years without any problems.

very easy to follow along, thankyou
Use warm water for mixing because it helps dissolve solids better.
Thank you David. I enjoy your videos please keep doing what you are so good at. 👍
Such good jars! A blessing that I found at the retail shops.
Hello david... You are doing a wonderful job in beekeeping field.... I m watching your videos and getting a lot of knowledge...
Im so thankful to hear that!

Thank you for sharing your 1:1 recipe, David.
Thanks Eddie, I LOVE ❤️ helping beekeepers!!
I have some of these jars given to me by a neighbor. They say their relatives used to use them for moonshine. :)
I have two of those! Found them in my canning supplies.

Sure, but that's the time small hive beetle will LOVE them, so I personally would only do that if: 1) I did not have a SHB problem and 2) My bees were protein deprived.
Hey David, I do not see the type/brand of protein powder that you use. I am a new beekeeper. I have learned so much from your videos. Thank you!
Good question because there seems to be several protein powders and I have heard some ferment ? So David can you answer the question so people aren’t buying the wrong type ?
I left a link in the description to the specific powder that I use.
Hello David
Was wondering what size screen did you use on the burns top feeder
1/8 inch hardware cloth same same as on bottom boards
This was great information. I live in northwest indiana and this is my first year keeping bees. I’ve been feeding my bees in the top like you do using 3 - pint size jars and the bees are sucking it down so fast. I need some of those half gallon jars you have. 😬👍🏻
The old beekeeper that use to run up here used those jars
Holes in the lid? Doesn't soak the hive or is just few small holes for them to stick thier straws?
That's a great question to ask on my lifestream Thursday night at 7pm CT. Here is the link: th-cam.com/users/liveC7txdg7rQAo
Send it my way
I believe you!
It's actually sitting on a granite slab.
Wow, they sucked that down fast. I was amazed.
Maybe open feeder away from your hives??
Hi David! Could you use a wide mouth 1/2 gallon? Do you have to use a regular mouth?
Hi David could I purchase a 1/2 gallon small mouth mason jar from you?
That is something we do not carry.
How long will you be feeding this mixture & ratio 1:1? Do you switch to 2:1?
Hi David, Love your videos. We have learnt so much. When you have a large populated hive at this time of year. How do you reduce this to a single chamber colony. In your video you added a super of honey to give them space and I assume you will wait for the drones to vacate and the summer bees to die off. Hi David I have two deeps now, can I add a third deep this time of year to increase my bee population,I live in northern Ohio. Also ball canning company makes a 1/2 gal. Jars.
I did the 1to 1 water to sugar with 1 tablespoon of man lake protein powder
I am excited to feed my bees pollen this way rather than pollen patties. But, my question is:
I want to do a Demaree split in the spring. I only have four hives and that's all I want....just a hobby. If I feed this way to produce and abundance of bees, then won't have a stronger tendency to swarm come spring? Secondly, with an abundance of bees come spring, how could I do a Demaree split?
Here's my video on the Demaree Method: th-cam.com/video/DUc2baiwAYg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VezhXhk7pTzTi3Vd
Do you use the same ratio for winter be kind boards. One teaspoon per 2cups of sugar?
No, heating changes everything
I have the burns feeder board. I was thinking about doing 2:1 sugar in one hole and 1:1 in the other.. I'm wondering your thoughts on that and should I use the additives in the 2:1 as well
Hi David! Might be a dumb question, but is there any reason you can’t use a widemouth jar and just make bigger holes in the cover?
Majority of canning jars are small mouth and placing a gallon on at a time can go bad if bees fail to consume it quickly.
Why do you use screen on the feeder box? I have been using 1/2 gallon plastic jars for years. I use 2:1 In the Falkland works for me
Are wide mouth jars bad?
Is protein powder and pollen powder the same thing
I bought out a beekeepers and got 20 one gallon jars with regular mouth.
David while using formic pro Can you still feed your bees 1 to 1 sugar water and protein mix or should you wait to the treatment is done thank you Charlie have a good day
Charlie, you can only follow what the label says.
David does the feeder frame fit inside the super or deep box.
How thick is the board.
Hi David, Your one of a kind, so good at explaining how to care for the bees. Can see how you enjoy what you do. Thanks for all your videos !
Hi David. I’ve never added protein powder to my feed but I’m intrigued. Seeing it settle a bit on your caps has me concerned though. I have the hive top, well style feeders from Mann Lake. What different physiology do winter bees have that summer bees don’t?

David I do have a question. How long do you feed them like this? I've read that once the day-time temps are 50 or below constantly you should switch to candy. Is this true?
David are you not concerned about the 1:1 putting too much moisture in the hive
Not at all because much of the fall nectar is much more wet that 1:1
@@beek thanks
Can it bee any pollen sub used for the mixture?
Yes as long as it is MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR BEES
The half gallon jars are readily accessible.
But in small mouth? I've only seen them with a large mouth lid.
Scout bees know I am the delivery guy for sugar food.
Where is the best royal jelly fresh?
Do you sell the feeder board?
My three hives are going thru a quart a day.
Isn't Amino B in Honey B?
Pickle jars come that size
if small mouth jars are so dear than you should invent a board with a bigger hole to accommodate an available jar
why don't my comments show up when I am logged out ? I am becoming skeptical of this online world
small mouth are the most common size in beekeeping and most beekeepers already have small mouth lids, example all entrance feeders are small mouth.
Yes I assume you used a reservoir top feeder. A jar feeder reduces the amount of open spores whereas an open feeder would mold quickly.
David I'd like to know how you put that glass in your plexiglass in your Veil if you give me the deal on that through Gmail or whatever it is
My bees are eating a GALLON of sugar-water in 48 hrs or less (I check every two days).
Thanks, i sell Yemen honey, good luck
My bees go through a half gallon of sugar water in 24 hours. There's no way I would think about using just one 1 quart jar per hive.
David I'm 81 years old and my eyesight's failing is the reason I asked if you'd send me that information so I could see a little clearer in my beatboxes but TH-cam's got my sound turned off so I don't know what I'm going to do about that I have a Gmail address but I can't tell you what it is right now
