If you only want to move on the x, y, or z plane, hold down their respective keys as you drag the object. If you want the object to hit the nearest surface, hit "F". The arrow keys can also be used for directional movement. To scale objects, hold down "s" and drag. Gizmos are visual UI elements that show up in your render view. For example, if you hit "e", a movement gizmo will show up. "w" is the rotation gizmo. Whenever you are finished using a gizmo, press the hotkey again to turn it off. The red icons in your toolbar toggle snapping (grid system) so that you can move and rotate objects systematically and more precisely. "Q" snaps objects into place, and "CTRL + Q" rotates objects into place. To save, do CTRL S and put the mod in your game's data folder. Go to a modding discord server and ask if someone can help you load your mod through the game.
2 years of not using the Creation Kit to mod Skyrim....... I used to be SO good at it. Now recently I reinstalled Skyrim and am having a FRIGGIN BLAST playing it again. Only one problem......... yep.... I have completely forgotten how to use the Creation Kit. Which is why I'm here. Again. Learning how to mod all over again.
For Skyrim Special Edition: The "Data Files" option no longer exists. You now have to open the game and click "Mods" in the main menu and then hit "T" to access the load order. That's where you can left click your mod esp to check mark it, enabling it for use.
I came into this think "Oh great... here is a company giving my instruction about how their modding tools work. time to get as much information out of this as possible" I'm shockingly surprised well fast, informative and helpful this is. In 5 minutes i feel like i'm not board and you're talking about basic concepts. Well played Bethesda!
I noticed he simply minimized the creation kit when launching the game. Are you telling me I don't need to close the Creation Kit every time I launch Skyrim? Gods, the amount of time I have wasted.
It's a brilliant design model, the company let's you the player do what you want, and in the long run they monitor the mods and possibly use the ideas for the next game.
This is so awesome that Bethesda is willing to teach us how the kit works because the company wants to see what creative minds can do to improve their games! Thanks so much! I mean you could just jealously guard your secrets in fear that completion would steal your work and surpass you.
I remember making levels for Doom back when I was a kid with some very crude level design tools (although they were great for their time), things certainly have come a long way. While I look forward to playing around with this myself and playing what others create, it also seems a great learning tool for the would be game developers of the future.
Can i just say I've watched many a tutorial videos in my time and the way you speak and explain everything is just brilliant, sounds odd com complimenting on the way you explain things but you've made every task easily understandable. Very good tutorial, well done
Finally, the reason I bought Skyrim on PC! I do love my consoles for some stuff, but for TES games it's PC all the way. Glad to see it looks pretty similar to the old morrowind editor in many ways still. Even this basic tutorial shows it's very simple yet very advanced - can't wait to get into the more complex stuff and test out my brand spanking new student copy of 3DS Max as well :D Thanks Bethesda, looks like it was certainly worth the wait!
Thank you for making these, have been a fan of Bethesda for years now and things like this that you do for the community just makes me want to support your future projects even more. Thank you very much for taking care of your users!
ok, what was C and Y for again haha. Im gonna enjoy going thru these tutorials. I have played around for a bit already and found that using the "y" cycling thru camera angle confuses me being just new to the GUI. Im like oh no where am I haha. So Im now trying NOT to press the "Y". I prefer the manual manipulation so I dont get lost because it never seems to put me back where I was using "Y"! I caught onto this one pretty easily since Ive used photoshop for donkeys years, since version 2.5!
Do you know, when trying to load up your MOD you're building in Skyrim Special Edition, how does one load into their work in progress level? The Special Edition no longer has the Data Files item on the Skyrim Launcher, so I can't find how to get my level loaded up. Does one now need to use a Mod Launcher tool such as Mod Organiser 2 to even get their level loading up? I'm a bit stuck on this step! Would love some advice. :D (Kinda wanted to work on my own MOD without needing to get into a Mod Organizer / Launcher if possible!)
Out of Curiousity do you ever miss all the adoration from your old fans? Reading through these comments reminded me how well you used to take care of your user base. We sorely miss the old Bethesda. The giant. The god.
I have never done anything with the creation kit this is my first time so I followed this video and I tricked my room out I put candles and a kettle-man and some clothes and i'm proud of myself. ;)
Thanks for making your games so easy to mod, its a way of future proofing your games without having to continual pour money into them. I mean I purchased this when it originally came out and im still pouring mods into it. Keep it up Bethesda.
Well presented and informative. Well done guys. Looking forward to creating something fun to play that was created by yours truly. Won't be anywhere near as fun as Skyrim itself of course. ;-)
I didn't see Blood, Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Themes, or the Use of Alcohol in this video and yet I was forced to login to watch it. Next they'll start labeling videos as adult rated just because someone mentioned the word "porn" once in passing...
It's because the game it self is rated 18+ , they probably just don't wanna lie about it and wait for youtube to ban their video since it's using a 18+ Rated content :) Even if they don't really show it.
+Alexander Walker Because that's a room in Skyrim, they might not have made one in Fallout(I didn't see it in the search as well), but there are a few other rooms you can use. One I started with was the alien cave because it's relatively small and simple, but a little bit confusing with all the props and lighting. Once you get past that(M), just mess around with props that are simple, like boxes and stuff.
I Really want to say Thank you for making these Tutorial videos, You explain it Perfectly & I'm a Noob at this kind of stuff but I've always wanted to learn how to use the Creation Kit. But you're awesome & thanks again!
I dont know what i did, it keeps asking me stuff when i try to load skyrim, like in the video Its saying this: MASTERFILE: NavmeshInfo 00028e37 has no parent space, ignoring And also: MASTERFILE: Errors were encountered during InitItem for reference: BaseL 'AutoLoadDoor01' (00031897) Ref: " '(00015E1D)' Cell: 'YngolBarrowEcterior' (0000B452) (38,11) in world 'Tamriel' (0000003C)
Try verifying the files for both the game and the creation kit. You can do this by opening the Steam application. First select Library --> right click on "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" --> select Properties --> select the tab labeled "Local Files" --> "Verify Integrity of Game Cache...". Once it has verified and repaired any files it needs to do the same for the Creation Kit, but instead of Library --> "All Games" it will be Library --> "Tools" and repeat the rest from above. I hope this helps.
TYSM FOR THIS! . With the introduction of the new version of creation kit for STARFIELD , it would be AMAZING if you had another series like this but simpler and broken down to a translatable system, like levels 0 - 100 . "You know nothing about NOTHING right? in this Episode we're taking you from Level ZERO - to - Level ONE !" and so on and so on
Bethesda makes one of the best games ever, makes a tool to let us create stuff and also teaches us how to use it, why the fuck is Zenimax Studios in charge of ESO? I think Bethesda would've been perfect for the job.
The camera in CK is TERRIBLE, I do mean terrible. Inverted controls, linked to objects, the "free view" is a joke. I've been messing with UE since 1999 (I was like 6 years old), it had it's problems, but fuck... Not sure how hard it is to make the camera move around freely without being linked to objects in the cell, like in 99% of all other engines...
+ADevilNeverCry I know right. I'm really used to work in Blender and Unreal engine, those are soft and friendly. Trying to build something in the CK is like trying to build a card castle inside one of those zero G airplanes.
+js100serch I've gotten use to the controls, but I still hate them... You can literally click on an object, whether it's a house, an npc or a misc item and move it without even knowing and ending up with bugs and shit not aligned properly. It's dumb to have to click on something to be able to move the camera properly, and if you drag the mouse, even an inch while clicking on that object, you will move it... sometimes the difference is only noticeable in game. There's a lot of things that I hate about the CK, a lot. Not being able to re-size objects properly is another... Anyway, I really enjoy skyrim and making mods for it, despite all it's problems, but damn, beth should improve their creation tools. Lets hope they've improved with the F4 CK, whenever that is coming out :P
Well here I go, gonna learn this shit and then remake all the inns in Skyrim because the guy who had the idea originally apparently stopped. Shame really...
Will Thomson Kinda not at all, school got in the way, on top of the fact that the thing is a bit of a pain to use on a 12 year old 15 inch monitor. But I'll get to it once my break starts on Tuesday. I hope at least, I also got back into that Minecraft project I was doing (a giant little blocks mosque) only that one's really infuriating because it's killing my processor... you have not seen real lag, trust me...
***** Not at all, school is killing my ass, and college application looming overhead threatening to ruin the next 5 or so decades of my life. But it's all good, it's all OK, I still have that little blocks mosque I've been making in Minecraft for about a year, I can still work on that *processor and RAM start chugging after 5 minutes of gameplay because of two many chunks* FUUUUUUUUUUUCK MENTAL BREAKDOWN IMMINENT! ABANDON SHIP! ABANDON SHIIIIIP! But seriously now, I'm definitely going to do it someday, but it's just so hard to be arsed to learn how to use this bloody thing with a premade computer from 2011 (made in Serbia so the hardware is probably from around 2008/9) and on a 12 year old 15 inch monitor. I swear the worst thing about creation kits is fitting the god damn menus on the screen -.- But yeah, my break starts on Thursday and my last two tests are on Tuesday so I think (now that people are actually expressing some interest for this) I might go full serious with this project. I think I'm going to start with the Inn of the town right on the foot of the throat of the world (can't believe I forgot the name) anyways, wish me luck and thanks for the interest.
You can do that with the console incorporated in the game. Use the "help x" command where the x is the name of the object or npc you're looking for e.g. typing "help ingot" would give you the names and item codes to all the ingots in the game.
In case anyone is wondering (i dont think he said it in the video), Hold spacebar to pan the camera if you can't (or don't like to) use the middle mouse button. Mine broke ages ago so i really needed an alternative. Just holding spacebar seems to work nicely
You turned on 'grid-snapping', which is the red-square thingy in the left-upper corner of the screen. You can turn it off (and on) by hitting 'q', and if you're having the same thing with rotating, you can hit 'ctrl+q' (which enables/disables the red rectangular-thingy, next to the red-square thingy) I like things.
How did I miss this tutorial? Simple and informative. I couldn't figure out crap till I watched this. Now Whiterun is full of freakin kettles. JK. I recommend this tutorial as the first thing to do before trying to even open the CK.
As the result of an update made to the creation kit after the tutorial was done. Y is now cycle camera, C is move on Y axis... I hope this helps out people stuck in this tutorial not being able to use the move on C axis and the yycle yamera option ;)
Thanks heaps for that explanation you Just mad the seem heaps more useable and alot easier for me, Im taly new but that just made it easier for me to understand, time to mess around, well after I finish watching the tutorials but nah, Kudos you really made that and the kit way more understandable.
There's another version of Creation Kit for both Oblivion and Morrowind called Construction Kit. Each is specific for its game. They are similar overall, but there are differences.
And i thought using a cad program was challenging that cake compaired to modding lol this is a pain in the ass but thank you for takeing the time to teach us.
The black box is Command Line, it is supposed to show up. If you have any mods installed, they may be making Skyrim crash before it even loads. If not, then I suggest you redownload Skyrim. If this is the first time you have started it up (have not previously played Skyrim) then it is probably some problem with your computer.
@jefthereaper Back in the day modders had little to no help from the devs, only the tools, I am very glad that people actually appreciated this kind of stuff and would hope a lot of devs follow in this path.
@FerretOverlord they just should make it possible to add input sequences for in-game commands(thus making an improved combat system possible), the possibility to use more followers and a more extensive/accessible command-interface for them would also be a step towards a perfect game
On laptop CK for Legendary on Windows 10 (if it matters), my keyboard shortcuts only work sometimes. Check Edit > Render Window Hotkeys cuz some of the keys have changed.
As per 6:20 in the vid, my left click on my mouse doesn't move the object along a horizontal plane like his. Mine shrinks and enlarges it. Is there a setting somewhere that I can fix that?
*******FYI for the Editor of this channel**********. You need to add the rest of the "Creation Kit Tutorial Series" to the playlist. Only the intro and 1-3 episodes are on
1:33 I already have a problem. Just loading the skyrim ESM leads to the following issue: DEFAULT: NiControllerSquence::StoreTargets 'Amldle' failed to find target with following identifiers: m_pcAVObjectName Cracks m_pcCtlrType BSNiAplphaProperty TestRefController m_pcPropretyType NiAlphaProperty
@Spencer323200 they can, it's called a wrapper. It lets you run games not noramally for mac. Also, you can use bootcamp, which puts allows you to use windows on a mac.
I had problems with the camera here, since it's hard to just 'look around' first person style. So if anyone's wondering how to get it working, go to preferences>movement and de-tick the box that says "Rotate camera around previous selection". This means when you hit D to deselect an item your camera can look about freely.
note to left handlers, I was unable to drag an object or rotate. Camera controls worked fine but any clicking and dragging didn't work, the creation kit doesnt like having mouse buttons switched in windows, open control panel and unselect swap mouse buttons in mouse properties.
@THEFunnyRandomz No, it is nerdy to play on consoles since they are compared like toys for kids. In my case, Im 24 and in the store I shop the consoles are in the toy section and PC is in the tech section along with hdtvs, stereos, bluerays, etc.

You can do that with the console incorporated in the game. Use the "help x" command where the x is the name of the object or npc you're looking for e.g. typing "help ingot" would give you the names and item codes to all the ingots in the game.
*sigh*.. more with the learning thing again..
For people having problems with the loading of Skyrim.esm just walk away for a bit, and it should load. Worked for me
will this fucking sucks :/ im on a laptop so i can't use this cause i don't have a mouse wheel
UM what about the programmed movements on the mouse pad?
i need to click down on the mouse wheel that i don't have in order to move :/
Herm, I'm sure they would be a shortcut for it. If not maybe ask for an update with one?
But can't you just buy a mouse?
They're only $15(Au)
Cool and this is so similar to the FO3 and New Vegas GECKs that you can use this to generally get a sense of the mechanics!
very easy to follow and doesnt seem as hard to grasp as I originally thought it would be.
Finally, a vid tutorial that realises that I'm a complete noob at modding.
Great guide 10/10 very helpful and the guy is easy to listen to. Plus does not rush things.
In case anyone is wondering (i dont think he said it in the video), Hold spacebar to pan the camera if you can't (or don't like to) use the middle mouse button. Mine broke ages ago so i really needed an alternative. Just holding spacebar seems to work nicely
To anybody following this for SE.
You need to get the Creation Kit from Bethesda's own launcher.
If Skyrim on PC was $500, I would still advice you to buy it! Mods are godly.
You turned on 'grid-snapping', which is the red-square thingy in the left-upper corner of the screen. You can turn it off (and on) by hitting 'q', and if you're having the same thing with rotating, you can hit 'ctrl+q' (which enables/disables the red rectangular-thingy, next to the red-square thingy)
I like things.
the old steam UI!
Fantastic tutorial. Very clear and well done.Thank you. :)
How did I miss this tutorial? Simple and informative. I couldn't figure out crap till I watched this. Now Whiterun is full of freakin kettles. JK.
I recommend this tutorial as the first thing to do before trying to even open the CK.
thank you so much for showing how to save I have spent ages trying to save it and now I know how
As the result of an update made to the creation kit after the tutorial was done. Y is now cycle camera, C is move on Y axis... I hope this helps out people stuck in this tutorial not being able to use the move on C axis and the yycle yamera option ;)
Thx for the video, it helped me a lot. A lot of hot keys , which is great.
They are similar overall, but there are differences.
one of the millions of reasons Bethesda is the best game developer ever
And i thought using a cad program was challenging that cake compaired to modding lol
this is a pain in the ass but thank you for takeing the time to teach us.
Go to the creation kit wiki, it's more comprehensive and they mention that you can just click yes to all and discard them.
Great Tutorial, thank you!!
thank you this series is really useful
Damn why don’t they release videos like this still? It’s been 10 years since they posted something
@FerretOverlord they just should make it possible to add input sequences for in-game commands(thus making an improved combat system possible), the possibility to use more followers and a more extensive/accessible command-interface for them would also be a step towards a perfect game
cool time to learn how 2 do stuff with the creation kit by the guys who created the kit
I love Bethesda for making these tutorials!
GOD damn this is the only reason I stay on studing architecture, I'd kill for a job doing this :D
And giving thorough tutorials on how to do so.
AMAZING! LOVE THIS! Bethesda forever!
Really great tutorial. Thanks!
I see you everywhere..on every video I watch..and every single time, it's a top comment..how do you DO IT?!
Remember to do that, you must first follow his early steps. Go to file, Data and tick Skyrim.esm and say okay. Then look for kettle
On laptop CK for Legendary on Windows 10 (if it matters), my keyboard shortcuts only work sometimes. Check Edit > Render Window Hotkeys cuz some of the keys have changed.
That is just... BRILLIANT!
As per 6:20 in the vid, my left click on my mouse doesn't move the object along a horizontal plane like his. Mine shrinks and enlarges it. Is there a setting somewhere that I can fix that?
dude you have a great "explaining things" voice
This is so cool! Very helpful! Thanks!
*******FYI for the Editor of this channel**********. You need to add the rest of the "Creation Kit Tutorial Series" to the playlist. Only the intro and 1-3 episodes are on
1:33 I already have a problem. Just loading the skyrim ESM leads to the following issue:
DEFAULT: NiControllerSquence::StoreTargets 'Amldle' failed to find target with following identifiers:
m_pcAVObjectName Cracks
m_pcCtlrType
BSNiAplphaProperty TestRefController
m_pcPropretyType NiAlphaProperty
@Spencer323200 they can, it's called a wrapper. It lets you run games not noramally for mac. Also, you can use bootcamp, which puts allows you to use windows on a mac.
I had problems with the camera here, since it's hard to just 'look around' first person style. So if anyone's wondering how to get it working, go to preferences>movement and de-tick the box that says "Rotate camera around previous selection". This means when you hit D to deselect an item your camera can look about freely.
just a small note which they dont say in the video while holding down space you can move you camra around just like holding down the moust wheel
note to left handlers, I was unable to drag an object or rotate.
In my case, Im 24 and in the store I shop the consoles are in the toy section and PC is in the tech section along with hdtvs, stereos, bluerays, etc.
thank you for putting this over 18 to Watch man :(
Your over 18 now so I guess you can watch now!
Just realised I had Creation Kit. Just thought I might learn how to use it.
