I really value Japan: the country, the people, the culture, the cuisine, the respect for law and order, and many other reasons. I've had the good fortune to travel to nearly every country in the world, and I believe Japan is one of the finest countries in the world (perhaps only second to the United States of America). I am sure the audience for this performance was very appreciative, and wanted to express their support for Stevie Wonder during his performance. But, as a musician myself, I believe the audience should not have been rhythmically clapping during his singing. Stevie Wonder knows how to set his own tempo, rhythm and beat, and like most artists during a live performance, they may want to improvisationally hang on a lyric as their personal interpretation and expression moves them during the performance. He may not have wanted to sing it in steady rhythmic tempo as if singing for a dance, where a steady rhythm is needed. Other live performances by artists may follow a steady tempo and rhythm where rhythmic clapping is appropriate (eg: Rock 'n' Roll, and Bluegrass performances). But I encourage all audiences around the world to refrain from clapping during a live, heartfelt, soulful performance like this one. Arrigatō Gozaimashita.

I feel as if the 80s were a short period of time when wars weren't the headlines, musicians with real talent were on the top ten and politics took a back seat to life.
