Very nicely done..Gracie seems much older, I thought she was about 10. She is very mature for being under 7. I will support her video . Lets get a pony for Gracie. Pigs are great breaking down the ground to get ready for planting. Housework is going to be there after your dead and gone. Your children's memories will go on for ever with stories they pass on to their children.

For the person that asked how to stay organized / on tasks, Bri answered very well. In addition, I recommend plan, plan and plan some more. Both myself and hubby work full-time 'off farm'. Every Sunday we would plan the week's menu which would drive the grocery list (most of what we eat we raise, make ourselves so not too much needed from store). Some meals can be made ahead of time and frozen for those particularly busy weeks. In addition to three children, we also raise goats, pigs (2 per year) and chickens (eggs and meat birds). Garden and preserve (can, freeze, dry). Just remember, it doesn't matter how messy the house (the cobwebs will always be there) the important thing is spending quality time with your children. I have two Eagle Scouts both engineers now and a 3rd soon graduating college (Cyber Security). Expose your children to as many experiences as possible; they will be the ones 'who take the road less traveled'. God Bless

I have been watching your wonderful videos, and might have temporary solution for your deer problem. Take 2 stakes put them on the sides of your garden, take a long sleeve shirt, and rope. Tie one end to one pole, and put the shirt through the rope with the arms sticking out then tie the other rope to the other pole, and make sure the shirt is in the center of the garden. this makes it look like someone is standing in the garden which will scare the deer. this will help until you can save for the fence. Also I have put perfume on the shirt. Just a tip from an old guy. I have other options if interested. Keep up the great videos. GOD BLESS. Bob Mullins new York.

Bri, I can tell you that the day will come when you have all kinds of time to be creative and then you will miss your kids.. until they bring your grandkids to have fun with. Life is so filled with ups and downs.. look to the ups because soon enough they are grown and gone! Who care about the housework.. of course you don't want to be a slob.. but more important than anything are your children, Be thankful that you can stay home.. I worked off and on as a single mom years ago.. and I always felt so guilty not being home. Blessings!

Thank you, Bri. Looking back and this helped me. The Lord led me in my quiet time with Him to focus and simplify to just what are my main responsibilities. I tend to see ideas of doing other things creatively. For example, starting new plants by cuttings or saving seeds, etc. These are fine and good on His time. Right now I need to focus on relationship with God, family, teaching daughter, home making. Focus, focus, focus.lol

You are right about getting things done when you do everything with your kids. When I was growing up we lived on 160 acres that was my grandparents land with a lot of family which I still live on today with my family. We cut wood as our heat source and grew almost all our food and all the children helped with everything and I can't see my parents getting everything accomplished without all of us helping. I loved my childhood and wouldn't give anything for it. I think that may be why I love watching you channel.

I have 15 years experienced in raising goats. and would be glad to come down and visit for one day and figure out a layout for your goat-run. Also to look at the acorn bearing trees for the goats and the free range pigs. That is the freebies that make them fat and natural. You did not mention how many wooded acres you have and that is key.

I'm a first time viewer from watching you visit the Rhodes at your place. I was happy to check out your channel and subscribe. I watched the Q and A first. You two are awesome lovely people. I am a nurse, too so I remember how hard it was to work and come home and work until past my bedtime and get up before everyone else. Nurse the baby, take them all to the babysitter in the opposite direction. Having three kids two years apart and a German Shepherd and a new fixer upper home it was hard. I did all the kids cares ad outside work. Everything because my husband was gone all the time as a businessman. I can't imagine adding farm animals but I did garden and we had rabbits for the kids year round. I just never lived in the country. It was called out I the boonies but it was just old suburbs so there were farms in the next county across the street. Not anymore. They keep building more every year since I moved here in 1983 and it's not the boonies anymore. We live on about one acre with neighbors all in a row. LOL. We should have moved out farther to a more half forest half flat land with freshwater running through it. We almost did years ago witha fresh spring creek running through on the side but the cow farm just in eye sight across the street smelled so bad I was not sure I could handle that sell constantly. LOLWe do have 3 hens. My fist time ever caring for hens and it is so cold outside now in Wisconsin. So that how I found the Rhodes and then now you guys because I was looking for answers to caring for my chickens. Thank God for You-Tube and Google. There was no such thing when I was about your age. You are doing fine for starters. Enjoy your kids. It goes by quickly. I'm sure you have heard that before. Be kind to your mate because after the kids leave you kind of reunite again if you were too busy to stay close trying to make a living. That happened to us but the reunite got lost somewhere after waiting my whole life for being close again. Something to think about. Simply Sharon.

Y'all's answers sound so much like our family's mind set and goals. I love the "how do you do it all" questions, lol. As a mom of 8, yeah, I don't ever do it all. We've been homesteading for 6 years but we moved last year and had to start all over. It's been interesting. Our whole family enjoys watching your videos together. We used to live in SW Va so seeing the mountains and scenery makes us happy. lol Keep up the good work, guys! :)

My husband is also a nurse. We have just one child. She is highly sensitive and very active. I find myself asking those same questions. Some days I just don't have it together either. As you've said, there is a season for everything. I feel like we have such a connection with you and with the Rhodes family. We have a small home in a country community of Central NY. We have a good productive garden with chickens but we're a mainly plant-based family. We hope to start our own channel sometime in the New Year as well. Lovely getting to know you.

Canning. You NEED to can. Its time consuming at the time but you will be thankful all winter long to have a pantry full of food you planted, tended to, harvested and now can eat. PLUS its time saving later on. Easiest thing to can is green beans. I don't grow peas anymore as it takes acres to get a jar full. lol Keep up the good work. You all are doing an awesome job. :)

    • @Brifromscratch

I have canned a little in my life time, but no serious canning. Only water bath for jams, jellies, butters, pickles and easy tomatoes recipes. I actually prefer freezing vegetables b/c I feel the flavor is better, but I think canning is better for long term food storage. Hopefully I will purchase a pressure canner soon and learn how to use it this summer.

Hi Bri, i think you are doing a great job juggling everything, if you are feeling frazzled or anxious it doesn't show. you both are doing a good job in front of the camera and behind the scenes with the editing. i thought you already have a productive kitchen garden for the first one at this house. Art, i feel the same way about video games, cell phones etc. kids need to run around in the fresh air, exercise, learn chores, help mom and dad etc. thats why i like your channel, morals, family values and hard work are what i believe in too. i wasn't a follower of any of your homesteading friends channel so i don't know why you guys showed up in my feed but i think it was meant to be? my sister in law is Swedish, i've always wanted to visit England, Ireland, Scotland because of my DNA and Sweden because of her. sigh, maybe someday 😁.

What is a deer fence? Is it an electric tape fence or a hot wired fence? I have a electric tape fence that I got to keep the raccoons away from my birds, but I'm not entirely sure its working all the time because I've touched it and received no more than a prickly feeling. I had one previously for my horse that was quite a bit stronger and was battery run. The one I have now is one that plugs in. I have a stronger fence charger, but it is a low impedance fence like the other one. I worry about fire danger as it is really dry this year - believe it or not in the Pacific Northwest Rainforest. Which kind of fence do you recommend for predators? Raccoons are just the beginning. We have mountain lions, bobcats and bears occasionally.

Somewhere I read that to keep pickles crisp, you add a grape leaf to the jar. I wonder if that only works with cucumbers? My experiment with green tomato pickles last year was an inedible disaster. I do some fermenting - but just cabbage. I use a wide mouth quart jar. Last batch, I let it sit on the counter for 4 weeks - best sauerkraut I've made so far!

last question, it seems you are in process of considering livestock. Will you mostly be going for milk and eggs- or are you also going for meat production? Do you think the kids will have a hard time with that? I wish I knew someone raising niche market meats like squab (french) and guinea pig (Argentinean). A lot of high end restaurants on the west coast order things like that from areas like yours. Any interest in raising very unusual things?

    • @Brifromscratch
      @Brifromscratch 7 ปีที่แล้ว

The kids have mixed feelings about home meat production. I think this is natural. I have always wanted to raise guinea pigs for meat. -A

I know the questions are not for me, but I can speak to video games with experience. All 3 of mine played video games. My oldest is now a rocket propulsion engineer, 2nd child is software engineer and 3rd is in college. You need to make sure there is a balance. While they did play video games, they also spent a lot of time outside - helping with the farm. They can deliver goat kids better than most vets. My oldest spent 7 days (70 miles) hiking the Rockies; so no, the video games did not deter his love of the outdoors. Important to note, It wasn't playing the game they were interested in, it was learning the inner workings - the code behind the game. I think the games actually helped with their critical thinking and problem solving skills. I've witnessed first hand their ability to think on their feet, multi-task and think about multiple ideas for solving problems. People can theorize; say what they will. The proof is in the pudding -- my three are definitely better for having played video games. jmo

All my thinking on this issue is tuned toward small kids. No doubt, I have friends who bridged from extensive time on computers and playing video games to starting successful careers and businesses in similar fields. I'll stick my theory while the kids are little. Thanks for sharing about your kids. I'm sure you are very proud of them. I can't imagine having kids that old but know it is just around the corner. -A

I did not. I bought mine dried. However, I am hoping to plant elderberry bushes on our property this year. If I don't get that project done then I am hoping to wild harvest them locally. They grow all over here.

ART and BRI Hi I am a paramedic and will be doing my nursing bridge program and still trying to keep up on my garden going to get some hens this spring and I'm a mom to 4 kids so I can definitely appreciate how hard it is to do it all. Especially when i want to go more organic with the food we eat. So just don't be hard on yourself we love the vlogs you guys do and they have been very helpful and love watching the Rhodes as well.

I am very concerned about all that you are taking on! The desire and skills are there BUT your needs and your children's needs versus all your wants sounds very overwhelming. I just listened to Patera at Appalachia Homestead "Mama Bear Homesteading with the Seasons of Life" -- it would be a good watch for both of you BEFORE you get in over your heads. Having said that, I really do enjoy all your vids and the skills and insights you both share. Just take it slow -- your relationship and your children are more important than the speed at which you expand your homesteading.

I really like Patara's channel. I will check that video out! Thank you for the reminder and the encouragement. Our plan is one that will take many, many years to actually make into a reality.

I'll tell you a story. Some friends of ours couldn't have children so they adopted two. Then they had five. We went over to their house for dinner. The children from probably from 4 to 11 set the table, made the pie for desert etc. Our friend made most of the dinner but the children had their assigned tasks. Yes, they were home schooled and the children showed it so they could have a conversation with an adult. I'm one of five so I know what it is like. My bride of 47 years comes from a big family. Her dad was one of 12 and her mom was one of 12.

There was always a good reason, usually to save money when Arthur was in school, to have more space once he was done with school, then to get out of debt we lived in a camper. Plus a few more stories. But yes we are settled as far as we know. We own our place and we feel like it is our forever home.
