And I was 21 years old (in 1978); Lived in Queens. Wherever you are Mary, I dedicate this song to you, because you make me feel! peace and love from the past. thanks!
I remember reading in the Advocate about the people who were keeping a vigil across the street from Sylvester's home when he was in his last hours here on Earth. It made me feel good that people were not letting his passing go unnoticed. But bittersweet at the same time. He meant a lot to many people. He was indeed mighty real
I TOTALLY AGREE!! HE WAS BEAUTIUFL AND TAKENETED AND LEFT US TOO SOON! i LOVE WHO HE WAS AND WHAT HE STOOD FOR. HE WOULD BE SO AWSOME TODAY. ESPECIALLY THIS MONTH BEING PRIDE MONTH!!! IF ONLY HE COULD HAVE SEEN THIS GREAT MOMENT!!!
Met him briefly at a house party in San Francisco. His performances at the Galleria on Pride Sunday or New Year's Eve were unforgettable. "Mighty Real" was part of the sound track of my summer vacation in New York and DC in 1978. He is greatly under appreciated by the wider world but those of us in SF at the time won't ever forget.
My friend who lived in San Francisco told me he would see Sylvester around sometimes on a moped with a fur coat and turban and he really did look like this. He told me at the Pride Parade there would be Sylvester on a float or as gran marshall then after the parade everyone would go to the park where there was a concert with Sylvester. OMG!! I would of loved to have been there, I would have died hearing this legendary "child wonder of gospel" and disco.
He was brave, fearless, brilliant, charming, unique, charismatic, and so ahead of his time!!!!! R.I.P. Sylvester, your music will always make us feel so mighty REAL!!!
This is GOLD.....Sylvester was a Trailblazer for being just who he was with NO Appologies at all....he made it easier for so many others at that time to enjoy their lives, no matter who didn;t like it. Be who you are. Never live Your Life to please Anyone else.
One of tunes on my phone. Right now I have 44 CDs with a playlist over 18 hours long. I have Swing, Disco, Soul, R&B, Rock & Roll, Country, classical, Blues. I've never listened to song because it's of a particular genre but because I like it. I was born in 1955 when we didn't have the copious choices of TV, radio, etc. like we do now. We watched whatever was on and some radio stations we couldn't pick up until after sunset. My hometown had CBS, NBC and PBS only when I was growing up. We got an ABC station when I was in high school just before cable TV was a thing in our area.
I was about 12 yrs old when my older sister 17 yrs old borrowed this album from a school friend. Well, l was not letting her give it back. I kept on listening to this album in the attic full blast everyday after school. I just want to thank Sylvester for the best music I've ever heard, even by today's standards.
i remember watching my dad dancing disco back in the late 70s, this song right here and he could get down all night long,,,,i lost my dad to cancer last year but today i play all this greatest hits and i know he is jamming..
OMG this is the best!! Sylvester never got the recognition that he deserved ever. A true innovator of creativity in musical composition. So discriminated against due to his orientation. I first heard this l was about 13. I still dance to all his LP and CD. My heart can still keep the beat but l have to take it down on the down beat now age 60. Unbelievable. All of it. ❤❤🎉🎉
When I was on a serious weight loss journey, I would play this song on repeat. Six weeks later, just in time for my trip to New York City, I had lost twenty pounds from dancing daily to Sylvester's fantastic disco hit.
I drive around town listening to this, especially when I'm sad. I imagine Slyvester in my passenger seat and what he would be telling me, or screaming, and just having a great time. I listen to this a lot with my friend Lynnette. From one flamer to another, thank you Slyvester. You are not forgotten.
Keep doing what you are doing, that's how we keep people alive and never forgotten 💞💞💫💫 keep remembering him and talking about him. Keep his memory alive 💐💐
I remember me and my other 7 siblings always requesting our parents to play this song when they started drinking....We All would be dancing our butts off..play that song again momma!! Awesome times in the 70's
This song is so powerful, it makes me feel like I can fly like Superman! Sylvester’s voice is truly one of a kind, and the beat is infectious. I can’t help but dance every time I hear it.
I'm a heterosexual 49yo woman who remembers my mother disco dancing to his music!!! real music real instruments playing was so powerful and meaningful back then...today it's a press of a button that produces a sound....this funky beat just makes any1 want to get up and dance!!!!! LETS GO 2024!!!! S.I.P 4EVER SYLVESTER....💅🏾🙏🏾❤
Not mighty vocals. No Whitney Houston no Marvin Gaye. He sung in falsetto. He sounds like Flip Wilson when Flip played 'Geraldine' on the Flip Wilson show. But with that being said he was a mighty and powerful entertainer and that is where his legacy is.
I just saw a commercial and they played a bit of the song. I immediately went to look for it. So many memories this song brought back! Still love it today.
This is fab!! Have this on vinyl...Amazing how sexuality back in the 70's was seen .. and how it is seen now. Pioneers like Sylvester and others brought attention to the fact there is a diversity of people in the world AND WE SHOULD respect that and each other xxx
This song is just great classic. about gays and other deviations..personally i dont care whatever people love and like untill there is mutual consent.and for F*** sake keep it for yourself,in your 4 walls. Those kind of "pride parade" is insulting, and wrong.as same that we str8 people start to walk arround and parade just b'c we adore opposit sex??
Sorry Angela it's a much accepted urban myth that gay people hid in the shadows and were looked down on during the 1970s/80s but I can tell you being an old bloke in my 70s that there were many disco clubs frequented by gay people and there were also many gay dating organisations . My girlfriend and I spent many nights boogying on the dance floor with gay friends. And I might add dancing to black music.
@@garypautard1069 I disagree with your "myth" notion. In the 70's n 80's gay people hid there identity albeit the music was out there but not accepted by most. There were gay clubs but they went underground, been there seen it not a problem for me as a hetrosexual 😀 live and let live, music unites people of any gender x
It’s 2024 and this sounds as phenomenal as it did in the discos in NYC in 1978 ❤. Just want to take time out to remember all we lost from that era way too soon including Sylvester! With much ❤ to you all!
I've heard this song and dance to it several dozen times over the last 50 years, but these comments are really woke me up and reminded me of how much heart and joy Sylvester infuse into this song. It's a simple little ditty with very heartfelt lyrics, but it just says everything we want to feel about dancing and being in the spotlight
Omg! Why can we not have these earthy, lovely sounds, in this day and age? Married my husband, after dancing to this. Suprise engagement! Pop is sh**, now. Omg, those were so much the wild days! :))
One thing about Disco music, the beat was pulsating and you don’t have to worry about gaining weight dancing to this music! After dancing off of this music at the club for four hours or more, you definitely got your exercise worth! I really miss this music because it was a fun way to exercise!!! Rest in Paradise Sylvester 💐💐💐💐
I saw him live 3 times. I remember him and how the AIDS epidemic destroyed so many lives. The disease and all the fear, hate and finger- pointing it generated. But through it all, he remained defiant. The flamboyant behavior, the energy, the costumes and the voice. A bittersweet memory.
@@asturiasceltic3183A costume, theatrically speaking, is any garment worn specifically for a production, a performance. For example, if a female singer wears a gown to perform a song on stage, that gown becomes a costume, because the gown is now a contributing factor in judging her performance. Sylvester may have worn certain outfits in everyday life. However, once he stepped on stage that outfit is then labelled a costume. I am not speaking of Halloween costumes or masks. I am not speaking of Halloween costumes, masks or disguises.
Yep the song by Sylvester definitely makes a person feel really GREAT... always did since the first time I heard it when it first came out when I was still a teenager ... and it always will
@@radputin80 Paolo Ricci ... your English is absolutely perfect ; no need to apologize . Yes , great song and brings back such WONDERFUL MEMORIES of HAPPIER TIMES before this Age of Tyranny we all seem to be living in ; especially here in America .
I have full respect for Sylvester for not hiding his sexuality, during the time when it was frowned upon, with the stigma and the abuse that came with it. What a disco classic, I understand why Jimmy Somerville chose to do his cover tribute verstion of this masterpiece. Still gets people on the dancefloor.
What a brave man and what a fantastic song to dance to. Yes, I did and still relive those memories of those amazing times. I soo admire those that weren't scared to come out then. I say medals for them all, and rest in peace, could you? probably not, you were soo alive.
@Troy Black Thankfully this is not Medieval Europe and you the Grand Inquisitor. You certainly have the surname to match! It took the world centuries to get rid of most bigots like yourself. Think, (John 8:7) Do you fit into that category?
Bro. Sylvester I honor your life and the contribution you made to the Earth. What a beautiful voice you had and a beautuful man you are. I'm so sorry how the church failed you. From one survivor of CSA to another I love you and praise our God for your life. Be at rest and finally free from the harm life can inflict. Reign with the King of kings. He knew your heart❤️🙋🏾♀️👏🏾
R.I.P. Sylvester! Anyone who was in the Bay Area or NYC during the mid-70's to early-80's got a taste of paradise on Earth and I'm not just talking about the sex, drugs and rock and roll. There was a feeling of love & happiness the Castro, Polk Street, The West Village (I'm sure there were other places but those were the places I frequented) unlike any time or place in the universe. I can you without exegerating, it was a magical time. I would gladly hand over these last 23 years to have just one year more year from those days. 💔
Just moved from Oakland to Sac, but stories like this will always keep the bay home for me. 32 years around this planet, and rocking out to amazing music!
@@JustinLHopkins - It wasn't entirely Hedonism. America was also having a cultural renaissance. The cost of living was low. The quality of life was high. If you want to talk about the cost of Hedonism you might want to consider the current opioid crisis which has killed more than half a million.
@@unfluster Opioid addiction is not hedonism. It’s a health crisis. Studio 54 is the definition of modern hedonism. Drugs everywhere, people fucking all over the place, and even deaths occurred. The club was literally stuffed to the ceiling in drugs and anonymous sex was rampant. I have no issue with this and if I had a time machine, I’d make 54 one of my stops. I don’t think anyone can seriously argue that this period in time was not hedonistic. Again, hedonism always carries a cost. Burning the candle at both ends never leads to anything good. I will say that the creativity flowing in NYC during the 70’s/80’s was unparalleled and we lost so many talented and creative people. We can never get that back and New York will never be the same. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. You can only party for so long before something inevitably explodes.
My grandparents (who were teens in the 70s) did not approve of this song. Guess what? I stuff danced my socks off and sung this with all of my heart 💖💖💖
You’re grandparents we’re not typical of teens in the 70s I was a teen then and can tell you everyone I knew couldn’t care less about people being gay, most musicians seem to be that way and it’s fine, true we joked about it but nobody I knew wished diverse people any harm. Without gay artists over the years we would not have such a rich back catalogue of music to listen to 👍
In the 70s people didn't care who was gay or not, it was nothing to see straight people (guys and girls) in the gay clubs (Proof - watch Natalie Coles video for the song "Party Lights" and you'll see clips from Studio 54). People were free to be themselves no matter who they were. What happened to that era? When did things change? What caused the change? As Marvin Gaye would say "What's Going On?"
@@newyoupersonaldevelopment3497 Actually, her grandparents were very typical of teens in the 1970s. Especially if she is an American. Only 30% of Americans in 1976 believed homosexual relations between consenting adults should be legal. Less than 10% of Americans thought being gay was something someone was born as. Hell, I grew up in the 1980s and for the vast majority of teens then, being gay was the ultimate taboo. Homophobia was absolutely rife in society. We may have come a long way, but let's not sugarcoat the past and look back with rose-tinted glasses.
To say people didn't care, must be from large cities. Because down south in the bible belt, my 20 year old grandma waa going to church twice a week and wearing slips. She wasn't going out dancing or listening to Disco, that was the 'devil's music. '
He never ran from his sexuality and put his androgyny on full display, unashamedly, at a time when it was more dangerous to be open! That’s definitely something to admire! R.I.P. Sylvester! Oh, and, this song is still a jam in 2022! ❤️❤️❤️
Definitely predated Boy George that we all know if the UK as 'one of the first ones in main stream' to do that (androgynous dressing and plenty of make up).
The never-ending waiters on the balcony at 2:48 are giving me life. Such an icon and what an iconic song from my younger days. Thank you and bless you, Sylvester. Rest in POWER.
In my opinion, the greatest Disco song ever recorded. If it was playing in a packed disco at 1:30 AM on a Saturday night and I was on the dance floor I wouldn't want it to end. From 1:38 until 3:01 is magical, close your eyes and listen as if you were dancing without watching the video, the jam going on is perfectly understated, it could go on for an hour and you would just keep moving. Sylvester and the entire song are sublime.
It's on my playlist and sometimes I get strange looks from young people when I go walking. I be singing it as I walk. Actually it's more like a combined walk and dance. What gets me is some people are surprised that I still dance at 67 after I've had a heart attack and bypass surgery. When I cut my lawn or other yard work I listen to my music. My phone's playlist is over 18 hours...
This brings back lots of memories as it was filmed at the legendary Embassy Club in London which I used to go to on Saturday nights in the late 1970s! Great times!!!!
One of the dancers is the legendary godmother of the industrial music genre, Cosey Fanni Tutti! She is the dancer in the middle of the video who swings her hips with a dancer in front of her and then sashays to the right of the back row (she has the longest hair of all of the dancers).
@@madderfoulard - Would be great to name the other dancers, and the choreographer, if known. The routine is great. Would love to see it reconstructed to the original studio version. There are so many repeated loops in this video, hard to decipher the actual original choreography from it.
This tune epitomises the 70's disco era and i wish i had a time machine to go back to the 70's what an era of music and the best decade ever i miss those days so much😭😭😭😭😭😭
It was electric one night in West Hollywood when we still had Sunday tea dances. One summer in 1981 at the Blue Parrot this artiste extraordinaire jumped up on the bar in heels and caftan and brought the bar to a crescendo of joy when we realized who it was. That one impromptu performance of this song and all the friends I was with who shall be forever young was one of the highlights of my life. Thank you for this posting.
I'm trying to figure out how/why 711 people gave this song/video the thumbs down? This song (from circa 1978) is still awesome 43 years later. And as a side note, this guy did 5 costume changes in 4 mins!!! AWESOME rest in heaven Sylvester.
Fifteen years old at the time hearing this…what a space to be around and hearing this bold, upbeat and funky man sing this…it was and still is amazing experience. Rip Sylvester.🙏🏽
BS....what people think they are usually does not reflect reality. Boy thinks he's a girl....BS. Girl thinks she is a boy...BS. Means nothing. Stalin, Hitler, Mao and a bunch of others thought they were good people...Joe Biden thinks he's a good leader, reality says otherwise. You can't make a boy a girl by cutting off his pecker. Wise up.
This was 1978 and Sylvester was true to himself and a lot of people accepted him a such. Today there's too many that are more concerned about virtual signaling than being themselves and people can spot fakeness. In an interview, Sylvester talked about the problems he had with some in the gay community because he wouldn't "do it their way".

Every time I need to remember to be fierce, this is the song. Sylvester was ahead of his time, and I will always love this!

He told me at the Pride Parade there would be Sylvester on a float or as gran marshall then after the parade everyone would go to the park where there was a concert with Sylvester. OMG!!

From what I understood, Sylvester was not in costume, those were his real clothes.

Hedonism always has its cost.

Without gay artists over the years we would not have such a rich back catalogue of music to listen to 👍
Bravo!
