I went to lake hillier a few years back, smell wasn’t too bad but yh defs Don’t want to be swallowing the water. Defs recommend going there tho, the small town and beaches near the lake are great in Australian summer/spring
The Waitomo caves are so beautiful, you get to kayak through the cave and it is such a surreal experience. There is even tubing (or atleast there was when I visited the cave)
