When I first began playing table tops I was around 12 years old. By that point I was pretty well acquainted with mortality. My mother had already gone through several different cancer scares. And a few other events that had made me not afraid, or ignorant of death. I think that a lot of children nowadays are in my position that I was then. A lot of people are no longer ignorant to mortality. I also think that if they are that D and D is a good place to teach them that death isn’t so bad.
The discussion of mortality and showing it to children was already done with cartoons and comic books. And we all came to the conclusion that if you do it tastefully, you’re fine. However, if you do it horribly, you can mess up a child. Be tasteful in your horror. Not all horror is just gore. You can still use gore, just don’t overuse it. Even some adults can give a visceral reaction stronger than a child would give. This is why you should talk about triggers at your gaming tables.

I like to overdramatize the villains or make them goofy. Play them really silly and make the scary moments seem like Scooby Doo episode. Maybe makes Strahds voice like Adam Sandlers in Hotel Transylvania.

So without the horror aspect , how do you handle just regular sword strikes and arrow hits? The regular game has aspects that should be handled by parents that know their children well. When characters are trying to kill each other, both story teller driven and player, what does it mean to tone the violence down for kids? Couldn't that teach a worse lesson by censoring the cause and effect of bladed weapons and fire? I understand not traumatizing young minds with scary aspects or overindulging gorey descriptors but when the base game includes a death mechanic from blunt/piercing/ and slashing damage, most likely at the first levels or by tooth and claw, how do you tone down 3 strikes and your dead? Is this game a good vehicle, at all, to discuss mortality with children that aren't yours?

If D&D isn't a good medium to explore mortality with kids, then there isn't one. To me, your question could be summarized as "should we protect our children from every indication of harm and evil or should we expose them to it slowly in a controlled environment?"
D&D is a controlled environment. If you want to totally shelter your kids, then there isn't an answer, get on with your sheltering. Most kids have a pet that teaches them mortality as it suffers for some weeks then dies. I found our family's dog dead in the woods behind our house before I was 10, had a half dozen rodents or reptiles pan out about the same. Some D&D introductions to death and wounding would have for sure worked better than that. Kids get scuffs, they get cuts, they understand that a blade will slice flesh and blood will come out - be straight about that, just don't dwell in gory details. /shrug
IMO kids are stronger than most assume, sadly trauma is easy to achieve and part of all of us. D&D trauma? Please, that's barely a thing. Stories are the on ramp.

@@jacobunderwood4957 I really don't like that your summary, that put words in my mouth, were an argument you wanted to have, I guess, with yourself. Enjoy that. What i said in the context of scaling down horror for children was shouldn't their parents be involved with the process. I also asked questions about violence itself being described.. The horror of a slasher movie is in and of itself hack & slash. If you cant show the gore of a zombie, a corpse reanimated, why is the violence of a sword or arrow any more acceptable? I think jojo rabbit is a great movie for dealing with adult themes and not running away from reality. Thank you for the thoughtful reply and adding your 2 cents, no thanks for when you weren't thoughtful or reading things that weren't there into what I said.

Shouldn't good sensible moderation be in order for the DM? Having Grim Dark material in a game isn't that bad, anyone can enjoy it, it just doesn't need to be so viscerally described.
The remaining prisoners have had their hands and feet removed and are now carrying the young of the mind flares.
Doesn't need to be crazy over the top. To be scary.

TV shows are not always completely safe examples. IE my daughter was TERRIFIED of Princess Chrysalis from My Little Pony (chimera-like creature, with hollow holes in her body). She loved the show... but would literally run screaming when this villain was on TV. Even now... (she is 13)... the whole concept of the character gives her bad vibes.
