    In my opinion, the best president post WWII, not even a contest. His genius creation of the interstate highway system is something we still use to this day. Love his stance on the military, no president since has kept us from being the world's police in one way or another. Led the most economically prosperous time in our history. Middle class thrived during that period. We need you back Ike!

    The greatest lesson here, progressive and conservative ideas working together. He kept the programs of the new deal's era, completed the interstate highway, not to mention, he was an amazing general and respected FDR...true conservative.

      He wasent much of a conservative tho, he expanded all the social programs like social security, started a parlament for education and welfare, build infrastructure, was against big military and even warned America about it, nothing he did was conservative this was back when it was all about policies, now it's either left or right and more like a sports event than actual genuine voting process, people stick to what ever side they are on despite them disagreeing with most of the policies.

    • @AgueroNain
      @AgueroNain 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A true conservative has principles that are not at ALL in conflict to progressive ones. Eisenhower understood this. Now, I think, to your comment of juuk conservatives (my understanding of that) is, he dealt with and battled or sometimes agreed with, so yes, you would be right in some regard. Keep in mind this is the time of McCarthy, Prescott Bush and the young Neocon class of Nixon among others, who transformed the Republican party and conservative philosophy. So true conservatives in the context of policy, whether fiscal, judicial, trade, or even social are pretty much gone, shunned, none existing. Thanks. Very best.

      It's because the political spectrum has shifted more to the right in recent decade. Eisenhower is practically to the right of all republicans and most democrats. What was generally considered conservative in the 50s wouldn't be considered conservative today.

      @@hnys7976 No he would not. He certainly would be called a moderate, in the sense he was left-wing for the party even then (The Republicans opposed many of those things back then.). Not sure anyone really opposes student loans. As for that high tax rate it was 90% but pretty much no-one paid it, it was also reduced by Johnson/Kennedy. He certainly would not be called all that but indeed he is centre-left on economic matters, though he really did not care for domestic matters, bearing in mind back then that meant really mild things compared to today but centre-right on social matters.

      @@hasantariq869 I wonder how accurate that "against civil rights" phrasing is, though. Granted, he was purportedly against *legislating" civil rights, at least early in his presidency. However, at the very least, his understanding of the need had shifted later, at least from 1957 on. He sent Congress the proposal for the bill that became the Civil Rights Act of 1957... which he signed. He arguably inspired the Civil Rights Act of 1960, which he also signed. (Though yes, that got watered down by Congress - mostly Dixie Democrats? - on the way to being signed.) For me, the phrase "against civil rights" conjures up the image of, say, someone like George Wallace, Lester Maddox, etc... rather than someone who was admittedly late to the game in supporting related (and necessary) legislation.

    • @hawkeyeten2450

      @@patricksweeney6334 I've actually read transcripts from a number of Eisenhower's speeches, and he actually denounced segregation and racism from his first months in office onward, even telling Congress in 1953 that America's immigration quotas had to be changed to get rid of what he felt was clear racial discrimination. However, he believed that some of it would be FAR more effective if handled by the states (also, he may have had legitimate concerns that the Supreme Court and judiciary would strike down a federal civil rights law that banned segregation, as horrifically this HAD happened in the 1880s). From what I've researched and read, Ike's ORIGINAL civil rights strategy was a three-pronged effort as follows: 1) Use federal power (legislatively or preferably executively) to forcefully desegregate the federal government, any remaining parts of the military and all areas that were under federal jurisdiction (which at the time included much of the city of Washington, DC). 2) Collaborate with state and local governments to get civil rights measures enacted ASAP, coordinate these efforts, and get cooperating state leaderships to help pressure other states who resisted racial integration into submitting. 3) Appeal to the public conscience with help of public figures and religious leaders to shift opinion where needed and accelerate a (hopefully) smoother and more natural integration of society.
      In many ways, this was NOT really a bad strategy, and a number of states during Ike's first several years in office DID enact various state level civil rights acts (among others in this group were Michigan, Colorado, New Mexico and Oregon) and several major cities even passed ordinances aimed at stopping employment discrimination. However, it would prove to be not as effective in much of the Jim Crow South apart from perhaps Texas, and unfortunately this is where it was needed most by minorities (I believe Martin Luther King quipped that Eisenhower's strategy was well-meaning, but inadequate because of this). Eventually, Ike realized that he had no choice but to at least attempt to try more aggressive direct federal action, and we saw this during his second term when he forced Little Rock to integrate their schools and signed the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1960. However, Eisenhower's administration faced hostility in Congress from Democrats (much to his fury, LBJ and the Dems watered down his desired 1957 CRA) and unprecedented obstruction by segregationists in the South (after Little Rock, at least a number of southern states for example passed laws that allowed governors to shut down public schools if the federal government tried to forcibly integrate them). I'm not saying that Ike was perfect on civil rights, but he was MUCH stronger than people give him credit for, and IMO he was actually better than Truman or even Kennedy honestly. He was stuck in a horrible situation where there were few if any good/quick answers.

    ...The Republican campaign slogan in 1952 was a pithy "I like Ike" Eisenhower, a hands-off President, had a near universal appeal as everybody's grandfather. For example, he once observed, "Things are more like they are now than they were before." Love the way liberal historians have to qualify their statements that he was not "really" a conservative in order to compliment him.

      just looked "Eisenhower's mother was said to be of mixed blood from Africa and mulatto. This claim seems to be ultimately based on nothing more than her appearance on a 1885 wedding photograph. Historians and biographers of Eisenhower had documented his parents' German, Swiss and English ancestry and long history in America." FROM GOOGLE So not exactly

    Eisenhower was one of the best presidents ever, taxing the rich at 90% was a smart move, the economy boomed. The presidents of today aren't smart enough to figure this out.

    • @someedgyaccount3589
      @someedgyaccount3589 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sam Hammel though 5 people paid a 90% tax in total the rich paid less in taxes than they do today. For example when Obama was president the top tax rate was about 40% the rich ended up paying 90% of all taxes in total. So your point is that when the rich pay less taxes the economy is better :)
