The humor is so South Walian in places it's hard to pick up all the references. Love John Sparkes. Wales had very little decent homegrown comedy when I was growing up and poor John had very little budget to do much, but what he did have was access to the HTV Wales archive of old interviews and for a Welsh kid who also loves American shows like Mystery Science Theater 3000 it just translated to comedy gold
Used to love this guy back in the 90's when this was on. The old documentary films of life in Wales back in the 40's and 50's are real but his commentaries over the top of them are very funny. The 'turtle shells' at the start are in fact a traditional Welsh river craft called a coracle.
The coracle was what they were carrying in the tortoise sketch at the start. Check out John Sparks characters Siadwell, from Naked video and Denzil & Gwyneth and Frank Hovis from Absolutely. Disturbingly brilliant!
"Ooooh I do love you, Barry. I do loves you!" I now need to go search for more John Sparkes stuff, damn, he was so funny!!! I now also want to rewatch Satellite City as well, ooooh and high hopes....... its a you tube black hole time!
Course, if you want Welsh humour, you could go the full Welsh. With or without subtitles. It's old fashioned but it's sweet. And Ryan Davies, the litke one, was a true bard, a musical master and funny with that, too. th-cam.com/video/OR51wwFX8P0/w-d-xo.html
Ah man...as an Englishman across the border I've never seen any of this before and didn't know it existed..but that was bloody funny...since watching the Ospreys in Wales ('SlowTrain vid), and chatting to many Welsh people online, i have a greater appreciation of all things Welsh(language, geography, culture etc)...This was great , mad as a box of frogs , and thx to whoever recommended this, really made me laugh haha..thx Squirrel :)
"Cleo Lane" - Cleo Laine is a famous jazz singer, known for her scat singing. She used to perform with her husband, composer/musician Johnny Dankworth.
The Coracle is one of the oldest forms of water transport on the planet, allowing the Welch to colonize distant lands like Anglesey. Don't you know? Dai bach.
That show was around about 24 years ago when I first went to university in Aberystwyth, which is up the coast from Fffffffishguard. The guy doing it is John Sparks. It was a bit of a mickey take on regional television and self-defferential mocking of how in the middle of nowhere some of our Welsh towns are.
That was splendid!! Thanks Mr.S. As others have said in the comments, please some absolutely. It is great to have you curating TH-cam for us and finding all these gems. Thank you so very much 🙂🙃😄👏👏👍🐿
John sparks was hilarious. Went to Fishguard a couple of times when I lived in Wales for a few years. lol. My daughter was born in Llandrindod Wells, but I I've never held that against her, it wasn't her fault after all . Pmsl. 😁.
Fishguard was the location of the last invasion of mainland Britain. For some completely unconnected reason, it has just struck me that no one seems to have done reaction videos on Baddiel and Newman's "History Today" sketches. Well worth a look.
Just to add: IIRC the last French invasion of Britain, spearheaded by an American, was wrapped up BEFORE the British army got there. That'll teach them to use convicts.
For excellent examples of using real news interviews and asking insane questions, check out Chris Morris and The Day Today (TV show) and the radio show that came before it (On The Hour). It's where Alan Partridge was introduced to the world, too. (Tried adding links but the comment disappeared)
Lived in Ruthin in 1990 when this was at its peak! Legendary. I remember him doing the news & they cut to Wrexham & it showed a car on fire I was sooo proud being from Queens Park Wrexham.
So glad it went down well, The comments were fantastic - and I to miss Shadwell ( Shout out to Swansea :) and yes if you have not seen Twin Town you are missing out. P S news just in Swansea 4 - Cardiff 0 . What a win :)
Swansea just did the league double over Cardiff, first between the two clubs in 110 years. Swansea won 3-0 home & 4-0 away (on the road). Also a nomination for Twin Town. Ruddy good film.
Yes, Swansea is a city in the middle of South Wales. More current culture knows it for being the first Welsh team in the Premier league but previously for Dylan Thomas's poetry. Rob Brydon & Catherine Zeta Jones both born & bred. The full gamut from an Area of Outstanding Beauty to the ex industrial council estates. He'd know - John Sparkes was born in Swansea.
"They're in color now!" Yes - the Look Out Wales skits with Hugh Pugh use old interviews from the BBC Wales /HTV archives, not all in colour - leading to humorous lampshading: "It's [black & white] all we got. Fishguard didn't sign the docket to go into colour when the rest of Wales did." They only have the one clip for Geraint Pillock. Mr Twp- Dwp or Twp is idiot/stupid. All job centres in Wales are initialled Department of Work & Pensions BTW. 😂
Never seen that one before. Wrong region! Very good. Swansea is a city on the south Wales coast. It's got a university, grew in industrial times. The Welsh call it Abertawe, pronounced Aber Towie. Those were coracles which the tortoise impersonators were carrying on their backs in the first clip. That's the advantage of a coracle, it's highly portable. Not so stable or easy to control on the river though. Cross cutting interviews has been done a lot. It's always good for a laugh, especially if it's done well.
John Sparkes is a comedy genius. Not seen much from him though over the past years. Looks like he's doing a lot of voiceover work for kids shows like Peppa Pig and Fireman Sam.
I've been to see this show live three times. Absolutely amazing! I'm even on some of the shows in the audience 😁 So glad you've decided to react to it! By the way, the tortoise shells were coracles!
"posters of David Blunkett in the nude" - David Blunkett, who was blind, was a Labour politician and former Home Secretary under Tony Blair. He's now in the House of Lords.
I can't be sure but I think the inflatable doll (muppet) is supposed to be Hitler. This is like a Welsh version of Monty python's, but I hate to say it, even funnier.
Great reaction, great show. The actor and comedian, John Sparkes, appears in the very good comedy series, _Naked Video s01e01_ th-cam.com/video/tf0bSU4nW1I/w-d-xo.html. It's a bit hit-and-miss viewed from today, eg the 'musical number' is a bit dated. It's a parody of Samantha Fox who became a pop singer after her 'page 3' (topless, scantily clad) shots in newspapers. Worth a look. It's about 28 minutes. So maybe react in pieces to reduce the chance of blocking?
The humor is so South Walian in places it's hard to pick up all the references.

The coracle guy was a running joke through the series he'd ask him different questions every week but use the same clips as the answers.
John Sparkes - check out his 'Siadwell' (pronounced Shadwell) character - shaggy dog stories.
THAT'S HIM was wracking my tiny mind for his character name
He's also Frank Hovis. Love it if squirrel could react to some of his stuff from "Absolutely". They're incredibly filthy and hilarious.
@@AndrewHalliwell love absolutely, was just trying to remember 'stoneybridge' 😄

I loved watching it as a child. I definitely wasn't age-appropriate for it, but I ended up watching it with my dad! 🤣

Frank Hovis was very disturbing and stopped me from using London taxis, I wonder did he ever shit on a bus?

Used to love him in a sketch show millennia ago in his Parka jacket talking to camera.

You need to check out Barry Welsh - Old Mr FFFFF. That was an awesome character. Love the channel and much respect.
Old Mr Ffffff was one of my favourites, too :)
As someone who lives near Fishguard, it's completely different here! Lol
Remember him playing John Sparkes in Absolutely, madcap Scottish (and Welsh) comedy show in the early 90's
I'm in my 50s, fancied your Clint Eastwood, 🇬🇧🍺 Happily single and Squirrel you bring me joy with your humour and recaps.
I've never clicked on a video so quick n my life. Would love to see you react to more Barry Welsh!

I live 20 miles from Fishguard, it's all true, sadly the coracle guy died few years ago , used to pass his house all the time
John Sparkes has a few great characters.. Shadwell, Denzel (diy expert) Frank Hovis. A guy who acts tough
