Those early seals suck , but when installing them dry in my experience is best. That said i use late model 1600 seals for bigger sealing surface. even when i had a 36 hp in my 58 rag in 90s

Usually dry but has one guy said dielectric grease is good on seals. I just did it with that grease and will see how it goes
