The Mavericks Invitational is considered the world's wildest big wave surf contest. The wave itself, located in Half Moon Bay, California, is steeped in a complex history. Running the gamut from triumphs to tragedy, names like Jeff Clark, Flea, Peter Mel, Jay Moriarty, Sion Milosky and Mark Foo have become synonymous with Mavericks for good or ill. 24 invitees were given 24 hours notice before the contest ran, mobilizing competitors and thrusting Mavs onto center stage of the big wave world - just where it loves to be.

I like learning the history of the locations just as much as watching the surfers

This is a great compilation. Hope they do it for 2016, though this was a much better tournament just in terms of the waves in 2011. No one came close to a 10.0 this year; I'm trying to remember if anyone even pulled a 9 in the 2016 Mav's. Still great fun to watch, but the waves vanished for the final. 2011 was the bomb. And Dorian's camera was incredible.

Caden Richter You can surf on the Great Lakes! Lake Superior has the AMAZING surfing! Even RedBull has a video of professional surfing on the Great Lakes! You can even surf on smaller lakes, seriously, just look it up. I surfed Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron, I want to surf Lake Superior, and you can even surf California's Lake Tahoe (which I also plan on doing!) - When there's a will there's a way!

Surfing this wave in any conditions takes big swinging balls, focus, and nerves of steel. But.....I have seen mavs wayyyyy bigger than this. That's the nature of surf contests, hard to get the best day for the contest.

I wish the Mavs Invitational didn't have any of its regulars in it. Like, maybe all Hawaiians, Australians and Brazilians. And then, I wish the Eddie didn't have any of its regulars - just Californians, Australians and Brazilians. I think the contests would be bigger and create a stronger online/tv viewership - and therefore better sponsorhip - if they didn't have so many locals in it. Same with Cape Fear, etc. These guys are there every single time it breaks, regardless. The only difference is the tents, chairs and amount of people. It would be refreshing if they changed it up and got guys who didn't know the wave like the back of their hands.... Just saying.

The locals here are most of the best big wave surfers in the world. You wouldn't want to have this event without them. Most of the Hawaiian big wave specialists don't like the cold water anyway.

Because they are smart and know what it takes to be a big wave surfer. Many of today's younger generation surfers font make it big wave surfing because they won't listen to the advice of the older guys. Diet , training, focus, everything comes into play.

I'm a snowboarder that has never caught a wave and here's my impression.This seems like a lot of work and risk with little payoff. Just riding straight down a wave at 20 mph for 10 seconds.
It's the biggest and best thrill out there. This is why surfing is the king of sports

I just watched this again and it seems even more unbelievable. You two guys getting up close on the left was really cool. We don't see that much anymore since Eric seems to prefer the hill. Banner is flat out legend. I remember checking Ross' or Radars and seeing Ion sitting way outside solo, nobody ēlse even în the water, just charging. You guys are world famous and deserve it, keep it going, much love.
