I gotta tell ya Bob, over the last few videos, I think you have done a great job introducing us to "today Bob". We like that guy, and welcome the direction he's taking the channel!
I think that’s one of the things that drew me to the channel in the first place - even if you have a plan (and even more so when you don’t), it’s inspiring to hear your thought process as you figure things out. It’s realistic. So many videos out there come across as expert how-tos, and you’re along the learning journey with us. It’s fun just being in the passenger seat!
This vid is so great Bob. It's like having a podcast episode but making something at the same time. One question I have is what happened to the office, Josh and the rest of the team, haven't seen them in a long while?
Really cool video style Bob! Liked that we SAW what you were doing, that didn't need much narration, but we got to HEAR what you were thinking, and why you were doing it; this style left us with both an idea for something to make, something to see, and something to think about and improve our own building/design style.
Bob, this video was fantastic! Loved the style of a conversation while simultaneously working. It felt like talking with an old friend. We can tell you’ve really thought a lot about the topic, and I think it’s something we’ve all thought about at some point, be it actively or passively. It’s great to see you enjoying what you’re doing, while also sharing your thoughts and experiences on any given topic that really transcends just making. Love what you’re doing and this new direction you’re exploring!
A dear friend and colleague of mine passed away this morning after a very long and very ugly fight with lymphoma. As a person with a Buddhist practice, thinking about time, its limited nature, and how to spend it is always important to me, but I'm feeling it twice as hard today. This was a very timely video for me, and something I needed to watch. Love to you and your family, Bob. Love to your R2D2. And thank you for this channel.
"Third order of retrievability", I like that. I've often thought of it as a maximal balance between organization, compression, and retrievability. For example, you can have maximum organization, but there can be lost space and reduced retrievability. Maximum compression may be good for saving space, but it compromises organization and retrievability. Maximum retrievability is great for getting what you need when you need it, but space and organization can be compromised. I'm always experimenting with the balance to see what works best for my current circumstances. I guess this all plays a role in how efficiently you can manage your time.
This is my first comment. I've been a fan for years. I love the sentiment and truly take to heart, "letting you think out loud". I loved it and it made me think in a new way.
Bob, you hit the nail on this one! You’re one of the first makers I started following when I got interested in woodworking and have been listening to Making It for about a year now. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy it when you let us into your mind. It’s inspiring and thought-provoking. Thank you!
Such a cool video Bob. I liked how it was just you puttering around, doing your thing, and just talking through the process of making an idea happen… And I agree totally. A project has to serve a purpose or a passion. Otherwise… it’s just work without satisfaction.
It doesn’t have to be profound to make an impact on someone. Appreciate you as a person and as an entertainer, if you will, Bob. I always look forward to watching your videos.
Being the father of a little 3,5 month old girl, this resonates with me. My time has increased in value ten fold and the time in the shop event more, so picking projects that are at the intersection of the venn diagram, being both passion and useful, is becoming the goal and I will think of it when chosibg what I work on going forward thanks to this video. Thanks Bob !
What do you know about model air brushing/compressors? I just set up a hobby room - bought an Avanti kit from Harbor Freight (good reviews/good price for a novice builder) and am getting back into building WWII Model Dioramas like I did when I was in my pre-teens. (I"m 60 now).... mixing paint/thinning it has me challenged. But like you said before.... nothing better than learning something new! :)
I’ve always considered the tiers of retrievablity to be the number of steps to get the thing. First: in the open, second in a drawer, third in a container in a drawer, etc.
I have been enjoying your increased amount of talking in your videos lately. I call it a cross cut commentary when your topic seamlessly spans across multiple clips. I have been trying to do more of that on instagram and TH-cam once I get back into it. One of my favorite quotes is from the movie Waking Life. "Those who are all theory and no action are just as bad as those who are all action and no theory". Your discussion of intension behind what you're doing, and how you layout the overarching motivators while you are doing the work strikes that perfect balance. Can't wait for the next video!
I think this turned out great. Adding the trim pieces and extending it out to frame the ice pick and rulers was a great idea. I purchased a couple of the long narrow ones, like your red boxes, a few years ago for a couple of bucks. I'm a mural painter too, and I put my long handle artist brushes in there to carry them from job to job.
I can totally appreciate this video! I don’t usually comment but wanted to let you know that I have been really liking your changes! Keep up the good work!
I actually HAVE been thinking about storage in my garage/shop for a while now, so this video is great. Using up scrap and building somethin got utilize unused space at the same time is brilliant. Thanks Bob!
I’ve recently started listening to your podcast these last 4 months and it’s been really interesting to listen to you guys talk and then see the result of that conversation come up in these videos. Even more so lately as it feels like you’re getting a second wind with a more philosophical approach to your builds. I almost skipped past the bobble head video until I listened to you talk about it with Jimmy and David. In that case, I think what didn’t pique my attention was the bobble head aspect of it. What did get my attention was that it was a full scale Optimus prime head. I like watching you build functional stuff but as a child of the 80s I also love seeing the fan service to my childhood as well. Thanks and keep it up!
Like the change up in style and topic. I've been reflecting a lot lately on what gets my attention and why I don't have time to make as many things as I want to. Definitely recognizing the need to be intentional with my time.
Bob, that was great. Thank you. I love hearing you think out loud, it's one of the best parts of the Bob, Dave & Jimmy podcast but there really hasn't been much of it on this channel until the end of last year. You have an incredible ability to distill very complicated concepts down to very simple, easy to understand stories / lessons. More, please.
Heard you talk about this project in the podcast, where you were also very open about how you felt like a bit over a year ago. I totally get your point, although for a different reason I also have to be very conscious about choosing what to do with my time.
Thank you for redirecting my thoughts on making stuff. For too long I have limited myself to making stuff that's functional. I am definitely going to tackle more projects that give me pleasure, function being optional!
Good talk!… I would add (at least for me) that quality of the project to passion and function is often an important consideration and i have failed quite a few times by taking a “short cut” and ended up missing out on the passion and quality aspects of making that make me happy… just sharing
I enjoyed your video bobtificating . I too find myself thinking more about the time I have left, but mostly for excluding things that won't give me the joy or value that I want out of my time.
The project itself was awesome! I think you covered the practical and the passion. I have found myself in that situation now, where I’m finishing out the inside of my art studio. Because of limited space, I have to be practical with my choices. But because I’m an artist, I want to create with the passion that an art studio deserves. Right now, the chaos has overtaken a lot of space due to building. But I am striving to organize along the way. Not an easy balancing act. I think you said it just right though, most of our projects need to have a purpose. But I sure enjoy a crazy passionate project as well. I have several on my short list, and can’t wait to get to them! Keep making stuff!
Listing to the podcast and I had a though about a beginner book for the three of you. Basic woodworking with Bob, Dave and Jimmy. Sound like a children's hobby book.
From good to better. Always improving, my friend. I refer to the time I begun following your content, after you just quit your job. As we get older we are also luckily getting wiser. Keep up the good work on mind and spirit, my friend.
thank you. I have been "trying" to get into making. Being self-employed, it's hard to "make" things. They are projects to fill a need. Friends and family have expressed a positive opinion of the project, but has left me unfulfilled. As I think about the things that I built out of need, I am surprised how fulfilled I feel collectively. I hope to start passion projects. Keep up the great work. awesome find by the way..
thats a really great video, not just because i have a hole in my bench which i have put off using for ages and want to get it resolved but other peoples thought process is always intersting. Thanks for continuing to do what you do.
This. Do more of this. Build your audience on this. The algorithm will adjust and follow. This builds relationship with the audience and cool things in the shop. And boy oh boy. I'm gonna go tinker with somehting right now because of this video!
I love this. The home-spun life wisdom married with a relatable project. Also great how you share your sponsor message while also showing part of your build that doesn't require continual explanation... keeps us watching because it is still interesting. That was next-level good.
This is a great idea. And definitely got me thinking about how and why I'm doing what I do day to day. Both in my projects, and my career. Thanks

You are so right ! That's what i try to do. But in this vidéo you made one thing we need all to understand a fact in many cases : you put the right word on it ! That's awsome. Thank you.
Hey Bob. I have been watching/listening to you long enough that I feel like this video would make you feel in secure. Let me say I loved it. You do you.. you are awesome 😎
Like everyone said already, great stuff Bob and I really think if stuff like this gives you the freedom to be yourself and do what you like that’s the way. Double thumbs up and carry on doing whatever you want, not what you think others want to see
Cool video, Bob. I like how you got to use those boxes in the end. They look really nice now. Keep it up! As for order of retrievability, I firmly believe there's even a fourth order of retrievability: you know you will need something so you put it in such deep storage that you completely forget about it and when you need that thing you don't remember you have it, so you go out and buy a new one. You then discover you have duplicates when you go to put the new thing into deep storage with the old one.
The narration while in process is excellent; I'm a huge fan of this format and keeping on-content while the sponsorship was dovetailed in is great as well.
Love the video and the chat. i think it makes sense about what you say and i think it should also be for example a reason whether you built something yourself or buy it. But i do hope that you stay passionate about the video making as the bloopers seem to have taken quite some additional time
When you mentioned how long you’ve been making videos, made me think about how long I’ve been watching your videos. This is year number 7 of watching. The reason I know that is because I built the Bartop arcade cabinet in 2017 and I know I watched your video to help with that project. You and your team at iltms is amazing and keep up the awesome projects
The Wisdom Philosophy of Bob Clagett. Makers Edition. Vol 1.0 What Bob talks about in this video is so true. I value my time the older I become. I only make things that have value and function.
"I got these safety deposit boxes at a yard sale a couple years ago and I got them because they are kinda weird..." anyone else flashback to countless Adam Savage videos with that line? I really enjoy this type of video - you are doing a great job of bringing the viewer into the shop and sharing the ever evolving direction this channel is taking. Great video Bob!
This may be one of my favorite videos of yours ever, Bob. I recently red the "Making Time" book and this felt like an extension of that. This sort of high level thinking is just important -probably more!- than some plans or how-tos. Also makes really wish I could have taken one of your classes back in the day!
You should totally do more thinking out loud videos, I enjoyed this quite a bit. I 100% agree, sometimes its just about making something cool for fun..... I have a mando helmet for that exact reason.... the fact that the face shield actually doubles as eye protection for my laser is just a really neat added bonus.
I've recently been thinking a lot about how to spend my time. The Japanese concept of ikigai is intriguing to me, where you find the overlap of what you're good at, what you love doing, what the world needs, and what you can get paid for.
This is the single greatest video we’ve seen on the internet in a while. Thanks for the wisdom here Bob. Definitely stuff we can apply to our own content and projects. ☺️🤙
Thank you Bob for a refreshingly different thought provoking video, as someone nearing the end of 50 I totally agree with you. Also, thank you for your channel, from the UK.
I have to say that when I saw the thumbnail and title I really didn't want to click, but since it's Bob, I did anyway. I don't really have a hard time figuring out what I want to do next right now because it typically has a purpose in the steps to my ultimate goals. I'm glad I watched because I do enjoy thinking about priorities and shop theory for making your space right for you. That and those safety deposit boxes are awesome and exhibit how eclectic I would want my shop to eventually be.
Recently have been thinking a lot of what time I have left. Some health issues have been getting worse and not a lot of positive news has come back on that. I've begin prioritizing happiness over things I used to think were important. Old country song by Tim McGraw comes to mind, Live like you were Dyeing.
I appreciate you, your channel, and this episode. I fir one would love to see what your crew is doing at your office and other aspects that revolves around your channel. May be filer but I am sure many of us would still watch!
i work at an excape room company, we build and install props and rooms all over the US , i get to do both on a daily basis! build interesting stuff and make potentially thousands of people happy with it ! and make income ! its great! stay passionate my friends!
I really liked the fashion of this video. Relevant to me as I actually love projects that involve organizing and finding uses for certain items and spaces. I actually made an event of doing this kinda thing for myself last Friday in my work area and felt so satisfied when complete. Anyway, I appreciate this and the things you have to say and nuggets of information you have to offer. 🤘🏽

It’s realistic. So many videos out there come across as expert how-tos, and you’re along the learning journey with us. It’s fun just being in the passenger seat!
There is an argument to be made that this is the single best video that you've ever put out.
I totally agree
This vid is so great Bob. It's like having a podcast episode but making something at the same time. One question I have is what happened to the office, Josh and the rest of the team, haven't seen them in a long while?
I really like these casual "fatherly advice" sort of videos. really calming.

This video was excellent. It felt like an essay or magazine article and I'm here for it!

Really enjoyed the video, Bob. Glad to see "Today Bob" in all his glory!

So many great comments! Really enjoyed this one Bob.

Thanks for this post Bob. I work at a small regional museum and I am happy to report that the majority of my time spent there hits both boxes.
Really embraced your inner Mr. Rodgers with this one, hats off to the much needed dad wisdom in our world.
Loving these videos.
Time is so important, even the time to do the projects or things to care for yourself
Honestly been learning this really hard lately
I’m getting some real Ferris Bueller’s Day Off vibes on the narration here.
Big fan of “Today Bob.”
You truly are a blessing, each video, I feel inspired to make something, don't know what yet.
Good talk!… I would add (at least for me) that quality of the project to passion and function is often an important consideration and i have failed quite a few times by taking a “short cut” and ended up missing out on the passion and quality aspects of making that make me happy… just sharing
Great video Bob! Loved the insight in what moves you and got some better ideas on how to priorotise my own time
I enjoyed your video bobtificating . I too find myself thinking more about the time I have left, but mostly for excluding things that won't give me the joy or value that I want out of my time.

Great way to spin a build video into a thought process. Its not always about making something we all want to build. Its about inspiring "makers" 👍🏻
Listing to the podcast and I had a though about a beginner book for the three of you.
Basic woodworking with Bob, Dave and Jimmy.
Sound like a children's hobby book.
I needed this. and I may need to hear it again, probably soon. heck, I might come back every day. thanks for the continuing inspiration!
Church of Bob is now in session. Thanks so much for all you’ve done for me, and the community.
I love that! We have to make every day like it’s our last so making things with purpose and passion is a great message! Thank you 😊
I like this Bob! Clicked to watch a build video and got a life lesson. Loving the last few videos seeing how you are just talking to us!
This is a great format, I really enjoyed the think-out-loud-while-building approach. Thanks for your work.
Probably my favorite video you've made.
thats a really great video, not just because i have a hole in my bench which i have put off using for ages and want to get it resolved but other peoples thought process is always intersting.
This was so relaxing and inspiring to watch! Thank you!
More of these thinking therapy builds please Bob. This was awesome.
Thanks heaps for the hours of excellent entertainment.
Nice video & thoughts. Those boxes look much better than the plastic containers, and take up less space!
I really enjoyed this video. It reflects some of my own thoughts whether im in the workshop or coding away at work. Thanks for sharing.
Deep thoughts with Bob
Very cool to get your perspective on things. Words to live by 👍🏻
Always glad to see a video from you. Your approach is always accessible and grounded in reality.
Making & philosophy. Brilliant!
Like everyone said already, great stuff Bob and I really think if stuff like this gives you the freedom to be yourself and do what you like that’s the way. Double thumbs up and carry on doing whatever you want, not what you think others want to see
I liked the format of this video much better than your regular project videos.
What you made there is killer! Looks fantastic!!
Love the video and the chat. i think it makes sense about what you say and i think it should also be for example a reason whether you built something yourself or buy it. But i do hope that you stay passionate about the video making as the bloopers seem to have taken quite some additional time
that boxes has a lot of character...and you added a bit more in the blooper... what a fun project!
You’d be amazed how receptive the community is to these more ‘slightly-philosophical’ type walk through vids 👀
Well done. I really value this style of content - you have some good wisdom to share and an accessible way to share it.
Really liking these videos where it's more about approaching a problem that needs to be solved than the process of solving said problem.

What I love about makers, in my case a contractor, is that if it's something functional or not as pretty as a finished project we're okay with it.
0:00 didn't even watch the video yet and I know exactly what to make out of them 😅 something my Aunt really wants/needs for on top of her dresser...
Great video Bob, I like hearing you think out loud.
That turned out great. +1 for the ice pick in the final shot :)
Great video, Bob! Glad you're putting stuff to good use!
Lookin good! And I really like the way you expressed this sentiment
Recently have been thinking a lot of what time I have left. Some health issues have been getting worse and not a lot of positive news has come back on that. I've begin prioritizing happiness over things I used to think were important. Old country song by Tim McGraw comes to mind, Live like you were Dyeing.
Fantastic work, Bob! 😊
Thanks for all the ideas!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Great video! Personality and feelings coming into a woodworking project. It's like a solo version of your podcast with something to look at. 😊
I appreciate you, your channel, and this episode. I fir one would love to see what your crew is doing at your office and other aspects that revolves around your channel. May be filer but I am sure many of us would still watch!
Great video! The process and the why are often overlooked!

No doubt my favorite channel. Thanks for sharing
