A dear friend and colleague of mine passed away this morning after a very long and very ugly fight with lymphoma. As a person with a Buddhist practice, thinking about time, its limited nature, and how to spend it is always important to me, but I'm feeling it twice as hard today. This was a very timely video for me, and something I needed to watch. Love to you and your family, Bob. Love to your R2D2. And thank you for this channel.
"Third order of retrievability", I like that. I've often thought of it as a maximal balance between organization, compression, and retrievability. For example, you can have maximum organization, but there can be lost space and reduced retrievability. Maximum compression may be good for saving space, but it compromises organization and retrievability. Maximum retrievability is great for getting what you need when you need it, but space and organization can be compromised. I'm always experimenting with the balance to see what works best for my current circumstances. I guess this all plays a role in how efficiently you can manage your time.
This is my first comment. I've been a fan for years. I love the sentiment and truly take to heart, "letting you think out loud". I loved it and it made me think in a new way.

Being the father of a little 3,5 month old girl, this resonates with me. My time has increased in value ten fold and the time in the shop event more, so picking projects that are at the intersection of the venn diagram, being both passion and useful, is becoming the goal and I will think of it when chosibg what I work on going forward thanks to this video. What do you know about model air brushing/compressors? I just set up a hobby room - bought an Avanti kit from Harbor Freight (good reviews/good price for a novice builder) and am getting back into building WWII Model Dioramas like I did when I was in my pre-teens. (I"m 60 now).... mixing paint/thinning it has me challenged. But like you said before.... nothing better than learning something new! :)
I’ve always considered the tiers of retrievablity to be the number of steps to get the thing. First: in the open, second in a drawer, third in a container in a drawer, etc.
I have been enjoying your increased amount of talking in your videos lately. I call it a cross cut commentary when your topic seamlessly spans across multiple clips. I have been trying to do more of that on instagram and TH-cam once I get back into it. One of my favorite quotes is from the movie Waking Life. "Those who are all theory and no action are just as bad as those who are all action and no theory". Your discussion of intension behind what you're doing, and how you layout the overarching motivators while you are doing the work strikes that perfect balance. Can't wait for the next video!
I think this turned out great. Adding the trim pieces and extending it out to frame the ice pick and rulers was a great idea. I purchased a couple of the long narrow ones, like your red boxes, a few years ago for a couple of bucks. I'm a mural painter too, and I put my long handle artist brushes in there to carry them from job to job.

I’ve recently started listening to your podcast these last 4 months and it’s been really interesting to listen to you guys talk and then see the result of that conversation come up in these videos. Even more so lately as it feels like you’re getting a second wind with a more philosophical approach to your builds. I almost skipped past the bobble head video until I listened to you talk about it with Jimmy and David. In that case, I think what didn’t pique my attention was the bobble head aspect of it. What did get my attention was that it was a full scale Optimus prime head. I like watching you build functional stuff but as a child of the 80s I also love seeing the fan service to my childhood as well. Thanks and keep it up!

I enjoyed your video bobtificating . I too find myself thinking more about the time I have left, but mostly for excluding things that won't give me the joy or value that I want out of my time.
The project itself was awesome! I think you covered the practical and the passion. I have found myself in that situation now, where I’m finishing out the inside of my art studio. Because of limited space, I have to be practical with my choices. But because I’m an artist, I want to create with the passion that an art studio deserves. Right now, the chaos has overtaken a lot of space due to building. But I am striving to organize along the way. Not an easy balancing act. I think you said it just right though, most of our projects need to have a purpose. But I sure enjoy a crazy passionate project as well. I have several on my short list, and can’t wait to get to them! Keep making stuff!

thank you. I have been "trying" to get into making. Being self-employed, it's hard to "make" things. They are projects to fill a need. Friends and family have expressed a positive opinion of the project, but has left me unfulfilled. Cool video, Bob. I like how you got to use those boxes in the end. They look really nice now. Keep it up! As for order of retrievability, I firmly believe there's even a fourth order of retrievability: you know you will need something so you put it in such deep storage that you completely forget about it and when you need that thing you don't remember you have it, so you go out and buy a new one. You then discover you have duplicates when you go to put the new thing into deep storage with the old one.
The narration while in process is excellent; I'm a huge fan of this format and keeping on-content while the sponsorship was dovetailed in is great as well.
Love the video and the chat. i think it makes sense about what you say and i think it should also be for example a reason whether you built something yourself or buy it. But i do hope that you stay passionate about the video making as the bloopers seem to have taken quite some additional time

This may be one of my favorite videos of yours ever, Bob. I recently red the "Making Time" book and this felt like an extension of that. This sort of high level thinking is just important -probably more!- than some plans or how-tos. Also makes really wish I could have taken one of your classes back in the day!
You should totally do more thinking out loud videos, I enjoyed this quite a bit. I 100% agree, sometimes its just about making something cool for fun..... I have a mando helmet for that exact reason.... the fact that the face shield actually doubles as eye protection for my laser is just a really neat added bonus.

I have to say that when I saw the thumbnail and title I really didn't want to click, but since it's Bob, I did anyway. I don't really have a hard time figuring out what I want to do next right now because it typically has a purpose in the steps to my ultimate goals. I'm glad I watched because I do enjoy thinking about priorities and shop theory for making your space right for you. That and those safety deposit boxes are awesome and exhibit how eclectic I would want my shop to eventually be.
Recently have been thinking a lot of what time I have left. Some health issues have been getting worse and not a lot of positive news has come back on that. I've begin prioritizing happiness over things I used to think were important. Old country song by Tim McGraw comes to mind, Live like you were Dyeing.

Really liking these videos where it's more about approaching a problem that needs to be solved than the process of solving said problem.
When you mentioned how long you’ve been making videos, made me think about how long I’ve been watching your videos. This is year number 7 of watching. The reason I know that is because I built the Bartop arcade cabinet in 2017 and I know I watched your video to help with that project. This may be one of my favorite videos of yours ever, Bob. I recently red the "Making Time" book and this felt like an extension of that. This sort of high level thinking is just important -probably more!- than some plans or how-tos. Also makes really wish I could have taken one of your classes back in the day!

You should totally do more thinking out loud videos, I enjoyed this quite a bit. I 100% agree, sometimes its just about making something cool for fun..... I have a mando helmet for that exact reason.... the fact that the face shield actually doubles as eye protection for my laser is just a really neat added bonus.
I've recently been thinking a lot about how to spend my time. The Japanese concept of ikigai is intriguing to me, where you find the overlap of what you're good at, what you love doing, what the world needs, and what you can get paid for.
What I love about makers, in my case a contractor, is that if it's something functional or not as pretty as a finished project we're okay with it.

I have to say that when I saw the thumbnail and title I really didn't want to click, but since it's Bob, I did anyway. I don't really have a hard time figuring out what I want to do next right now because it typically has a purpose in the steps to my ultimate goals. I'm glad I watched because I do enjoy thinking about priorities and shop theory for making your space right for you. That and those safety deposit boxes are awesome and exhibit how eclectic I would want my shop to eventually be.

Recently have been thinking a lot of what time I have left. Some health issues have been getting worse and not a lot of positive news has come back on that. I've begin prioritizing happiness over things I used to think were important. Old country song by Tim McGraw comes to mind, Live like you were Dyeing.

I really liked the fashion of this video. Relevant to me as I actually love projects that involve organizing and finding uses for certain items and spaces. I actually made an event of doing this kinda thing for myself last Friday in my work area and felt so satisfied when complete. Anyway, I appreciate this and the things you have to say and nuggets of information you have to offer. 🤘🏽
