  • Here's a look at how to start pepper seeds using the double cup method. It is super simple to start pepper seeds using this method. It can be used indoors or outdoors to start pepper seeds. The double cup method allows for there to be a reservoir for water so that the plant can wick the moisture that it needs.

    I tried it this year. Great!
    One hint is to run a short cord through the hole in the bottom to act as a wick.

    I am actually doing this technique for my pak choi, basil and lettuces. It work perfectly great and it was my first time doing it with an idea from my friend.but i germinate my seeds in another container and then transplant it to the double cup after two weeks. You can place small stone or anything between the cups to provide air and space for the roots. Anw, your video is awesome. Keep rocking!

    why not put a small rock or a couple hydroton in the bottom cup to increase the size of the reservoir?

    • @BackyardEden
      @BackyardEden  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You can if you want to! I personally do not because the water doesn't stay in their reservoir all the time. I water them once a week and allow the plants to soak as much as they can in 20 minutes. After the 20 minutes - I pour out the remaining liquid. This is just what I do! Thank you!

    Use the standard round red solo cups for the soil cups, use the newer square bottom red solo cups for the bottom cups. When you insert the top round cup into the bottom square cup it automatically creates about a 1/2” air space without using stones or marbles.😎

    I actually started doing this 2 months ago with some mystery pepper seeds I found. I didn't know this was a known method! I took a nail and heated it up with a candle to punch 4 small holes into the bottom of the inside cup. I didn't have a drill to make them neat so I just rolled with it lol

      One of my earlier videos is how to prep them for it so they are cleaned out :) I'm still using some that are 3 years old. So long as you take care of them and don't leave them in direct sun they are pretty reliable for single seeds. My mom takes them home from her work and I just recycle them as I get them lol

    @8:21 you mention waiting until the seed sprouts to put under the grow light. What's the reason for this? I'm not very good at getting good starts indoors and wonder if the reason is because I always start them under lights. EDIT - Thanks for the great info, btw.

    I like planting hot peppers from seed. I do it every year. My wife hates them . Don’t know should I divorce her and keep planting, or keep her and quit planting lol 😂. In any case, I will plant them again next year cuz it will be special as I had my hands on a Carolina Reaper plant this year and I already kept some seeds for next season 😄. My wife already knows the plan because she saw the seeds on the table drying for a week 🤷‍♂️

      I will usually water once or twice a week depending on the moisture in the soil. If the soil starts to dry out - I will water. You need to keep the top inch or so moist until the seed germinates. In order to water these cups - I will put about 1-2 inches of water into each bottom cup and allow the plant to sit in this for 20 minutes. At the end of the 20 minutes - I pour off any water that is left to prevent over saturation.

    • @BackyardEden
      @BackyardEden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as for lighting - I run my grow lights on a cycle of 16 hours on and 8 hours off. This mimics the natural lighting of outdoors but also gives them a few extra hours of light to grow big and strong.

    New here , I too use the double cup idea which works well enough as it simple , i first start with a tea soak overnight (12 hrs) , set up my seeds in the paper towel method as hot peppers takes a week (7 -12 days) to show a start an transfer to a clear cup larger than my solo cup , so I can see the roots grow an know when I can repot to a larger container , since my starter cup is a touch larger I keep a steady space open for holding excess water , my question is ,, How long do I use the seed heating mat as I'm growing indoors over the winter here in northern Ontario as it's now December 1st since I started planting my chilli , habanero, apache , jalapeno , Hungarian sweet an bell pepper seeds ?? An do need the mat once I put them under the grow light ? An what's a good time to remove the baggy from the cups ?

      You can stop using the heat mat once your seeds sprout as long as your growing area stays about 70-80 degrees. Peppers need warmth to grow and be healthy. I remove the bag from the cup as soon as the seeds sprout. Thanks for the great questions and for watching! Have a great day!

So I appreciate the first steps on how to grow properly or an efficient way. Just wanted to ask .. How long do you leave the sandwhich bag on for ? and also does the warmth under the plant vary on plant ? Or is it for all of them? Thanks again !

      Yes, you can certainly do that but I find that it isn''t necessary. I have had great results without using a rock. Also, when you start as many plants as I do (sometimes 300-400) you tend to run out of rocks and I don't want to purchase anything for that purpose. Thanks for the suggestion!

    When I do this method can I keep the cups outside since this week into next it will be in the 80-90s, with the bags on top. I did some bell pepper seeds in a pot, just watered them and left them outside and they are sprouting and look strong and healthy. Wanted to see how this method works with scorpion and reaper seeds. Is it to hot to leave these seeds out in this type of weather. I heard it will make the process a little longer. Thanks and great vids. Sorry so long

      @BackyardEden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do the scorpion and reaper seeds the same way as you did the bell peppers. They will sprout and grow most likely with no issues. Just make sure to keep the soil moist to help with germination. If you want to use the cups with bags outside I would put them in a location that gets morning sun until about noon. This will also help to not overheat the cups.

      Once you have sprouted your plant you only water from the bottom. The second cup is used as a reservoir. Only use enough water to reach the bottom of the inner cup or your soil will remain drenched and that can really stress your pepper plants.

      Helios Parker, I will usually water once or twice a week depending on the moisture in the soil.

      @BackyardEden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Nick, you just want to make sure that your potting mix is moist. You do not want the potting mix to be soggy wet all the time so I will usually water once or twice a week from the bottom. This way the soil will "wick" the moisture that it needs from that second cup. I usually put about 1-2 inches in the bottom cup and allow the soil to wick for about 20 minutes. At the end of the 20 minutes and then pour out the remaining water from the bottom cup.

    • @BackyardEden
      @BackyardEden  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! I think you could probably feed them common nutrients but the plants may not do as well. The reason being is that when plants are planted in the ground - the ground has a biology to it. The soil has macro and micro nutrients, minerals and living organisms that all benefit the plant. The common fertilizers are well rounded enough to supply all of those things to the plants where hydroponics nutrients may be able to.

      Hello Robyn! Thanks for the question! The second cup is actually used as a reservoir for any water or nutrients that the plant may not need at the time. You can also pour your water or nutrients in the bottom cup and allow the plant to slowly take up what it needs. This will also help eliminate fungus gnats because the soil surface stays dry when bottom watering.

    I like how each plant has their own humidity dome. WORD OF CAUTION TO ALL (AKA learn from my own personal disaster): Using a seed starter tray with a single humidity dome is fine except.. well, lets just put it this way:
    As soon as some of the plants start to sprout, you want to give them light ASAP, right?
    But, at the same time, you want to leave the humidity dome on until the other seeds germinate, right?
    Well.. if you do both, and if you have your grow lights a few inches away from the plants, as many recommend.. The greenhouse effect from the lights, combined with the heat coming off of the lights, will quickly jack up the temperature inside the dome to well above 100 degrees and can quickly murder all of your seedlings in just a couple hours. By the time you notice anything wrong, it will be too late.

    • @BackyardEden
      @BackyardEden  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Jeff, yes this system is pretty great because each of the cups has it own mini greenhouse. I am sorry that you learned that lesson the hard way but..yes, it is super important that as soon as the first seed sprouts to remove the dome and get them under the brightest light you have at about 2-3" from the light.

      Hello there Robin! I will generally water the bottom cup once a week. I will put a couple inches of water in the bottom cup and allow the plant to wick the water that it needs over the course of about 20-30 minutes. At the end of that time - i will pour out most of the water in the cup so that the roots don't stay wet (if the plant has roots that have grown through to the bottom cup).
