A cheap $40 tire inflator that you hook into your phone charger port comes in handy for 2WD vehicles. Drop your back tires from 35 to 20 psi and the traction is no longer a problem. They have settings so you can inflate the tires while you finish strapping your boat down, cleaning up, etc., before leaving the launch area

A bag of CB play sand is only a couple bucks at Lowe’s, Home Depot and such, stop where the tires start spinning and throw a hand full in front of the tires, back down a little and throw some more down and drive right out.

I use a U-Haul to splash the boat in the spring and pull it in the fall (have a seasonal dock) up in Ontario Canada. Costs less than $100/yr and I don't have to deal with the expense of a truck. If you only need them a few times/yr it makes financial sense.

I'm just the opposite. I rent a boat several times in the spring and summer and drive my truck full of gear to the marina and load in it and enjoy the day. It only costs me ~ $2,000/year and if you only boat a few times/year it makes financial sense.

I had an 89 Ranger 2x4, x cab with the 2.9 and 5-speed. I LOVED that truck! The Front Range snow had to get deep, before the 4X4 Ram came out. Put 300 lbs. over the rear axle and well sipped tires on it, it would work 99.1% of the time in winter.
I would never tow my 5th wheel or pull my 29' CC out of the water with it...however. 😜

Used to do that at the Jersey Shore, Island Beach State Park during summer when sand got like sugar, 4x4 w/permit only allowed to drive on beach, even w/4x4 had to let out air sometimes as low 15-12 lbs. for better ft. print, had to have portable air compressor or had one modified A.C. hooked up to work w/truck eng., much faster, going back to late 60s-80s, was in NEW JERSEY BEACH BUGGY ASSOC. miss those surf, jetty jockeying days in Barnegat Inlet !

All those trucks having difficulty with pulling out their heavy boats appear to be 2-wheel drive with no limited-slip rear differential. If their rear wheels are slipping, they can engage their emergency brake 3 or 4 clicks to "fool" the rear end into delivering torque to BOTH rear wheels instead of just the one with the least traction. They may have to give it just a bit more go-pedal, but it works if you don't have 4-wheel drive!

Some advise for those who are spinning their tires at the ramp: Outfit your boat and vehicle as you normally would. Go to a truck scale (CAT scale = $13.50) and weigh the entire combination. Disconnect the trailer and weigh the tow vehicle (reweigh at CAT scale = $3.00). Subtract the weight of the vehicle alone from the combined weight and this is the weight of the trailer. Subtract the rear (drive) axle weight of the vehicle only measurement from the rear (drive) axle weight of the combined measurement and that will give you the tongue weight. Adjust the position of the boat forward or backwards so the tongue weight it 10 - 15% of the trailer weight. If the tongue weight is lower than 10%, DO NOT DRIVE THAT RIG ON PUBLIC ROADS - EVER! If the tongue weight is too much for the rating of your tow vehicle, get a bigger tow vehicle or smaller boat / trailer.

Last red truck has the Fire Department sticker on the back window, and the dude in the Fire Department shirt does nothing to help his buddy out. But I guess with the power out it wasn't needed.

  • @MrNismopro

I think it’s weird that in Miami/Fort Lauderdale you go to car dealerships and 1 out of 25 trucks are 4x4. And when you tell a salesman that you need a 4x4 and there’s 0 inventory of 4x4 and it’s like they’re trained to persuade you into a 2wd. Like “What do you need 4wd for? Florida is flat and it doesn’t snow here.” And this is where they end up.

lower your tire pressure and invest in a limited slip diff.

So weird to be stuck on the ramp and have the windows rolled up. No communication whatsoever.

Renting a uhaul for 20 bucks to put the wear/tear from towing on it instead of your daily driver doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Plus, the risk of the ramp swallowing the vehicle is on the uhaul, not your trailer queen.

Truck payment $500-$800/mo+, or Uhaul rental truck twice a month for maybe $150? Easy choice. Don't the ramps down there have the textured grain surface for traction? Way too many trucks struggling on such a shallow ramp.

You know, if you throw two welcome mats or bath mats in the back of the truck before you leave home, this can all be avoided

The first pull out, you could tell by how the boat was bouncing on the trailer he had no tongue weight at all. My boat weighs little over 4000 lbs, I use two wheel drive 1500 dodge ram, never have trouble pulling out. Get boat set right on trailer, problem solved

Either buy a 4x4 truck $ if you plan on towing, launching a boat, ft.wheel dr. veh., SUV for smaller, med. size boats not to heavy, keeps ft. wheels on dry land ? sand in buckets, rake for vegetation growth, snow blankets for better traction, ( snatch strap, one that works like a giant rubber band, adds tension as it's stretched ) in case somebody might want to help ? (or county has someone to clean ramps regularly, yea right ) common sense goes a long way, might make things easier, more enjoyable, cheaper than transmission, tires, truck, blood pressure, plus others wanting to use ramp & waiting thier turn at slipping & sliding if not prepared also, by the way high profile show off big slick tires make believe for show 4x4 trucks don't cut it, just something more expensive fancier to get stuck, how embarrassing, good for vids like this, serious experienced boaters knows what's needed, still sometimes no guarantees, but gave it your best chance !
