I’ve been restoring axes for about 5 years now. I picked it up after watching wranglerstar and falling in love with the small forest axe like him. This project was incredibly interesting to watch and I love the aesthetics of the finished product. I don’t think you were looking for function over form. The design is just that of someone who doesn’t know axes that well. Palm swell totally out of proportion, key hole integral should never be anywhere near an axe, you didn’t even orient the grain of the handle in the proper direction. That being said, I don’t think your goal was to make the next granfors brœks small forest, but to incorporate unusual and interesting techniques on something they don’t normally apply to, and personally I found it incredibly entertaining and fascinating to watch. Very awesome stuff, you got my subscription.
x8alexisonfire9x finally someone not being completely negative and narrow minded. It seems no one reads his descriptions on his videos before commenting that they hate what he's done. It's just a project he decided to do for fun.
Yes, but I had the volume off. Did he say why he didn't just make a completely metal handle? He could have started with a custom wood handle (or styrofoam I guess?! For reasons?!) and then make a reusable mold with clay/plaster/not sand/dirt. Then full metal handle.
He never says a thing, not one word. The amount of wasted effort that's gone into making this so poorly... And the abuse of tools! Using the same blade to cut the wood and the metal? It's just ludicrous.
This head is from a Mattock, not an axe. It is, fundamentally, a digging tool that can be used in almost any tough soil conditions to either loosen, dislodge or dig. It is designed for penetrating soil through to the root structures below the stump, if not to annihilate a rotten stump entirely. Using it to cut perpendicular to the tracheids in softwood/heartwood is simply a misuse of what is closer to a smashing instrument than cutting one - the surface area of the bladed edges are simply an aid to penetration through a wide range of soil conditions, root structures, stones and rocks. While a slightly sharpened edge can be useful in certain structures with excellent soil quality, each edge is designed to withstand direct blows to any rock that might be found under the soil and not result in any lasting deformation to it.
Yes. Its a mattock. I’ve been looking for one myself. I used to have one and damned if I don’t know where it walked off to. If I restored this one I would wire wheel it clean, fit a hardwood handle to it, and add an oil finish. All of this casting and keyholing and such is all very skillful I admit. And we all have an opinion on how to fix things. In the end we do what we want and if others don’t like it they can make their own damned video....right?
Interesting, but as soon as I figured what was going on, I was instantly confused by the choice of aluminium. There's a reason no functional tools use this process.
13:10 Did he just take a gardening axe, put it on a wood-cutting axe handle, and try to cut wood? That would explain the minimal success he had trying to cut that log.
Yeah.. It's called a Pulaski where I come from and used for digging in dirt and chopping small roots!! NOT an ANTIQUE AXE for sure!!! Still used buy Fire Fighters and Hiking Trail makers!!
The minimal success can likely be attributed to him destroying the heat treat on this axe by heating it well above 400° by pouring molten aluminum all over it. I bet it was as dull as a butter knife after his attempt to cut that log.
pretty good job but bad concept : that full aluminium axe holder will break like crystal after a few woodcutting sessions. aluminium is very sensible to vibrations and therefore will get weak quickly.
The way he attached the wood handle to the head scares me, I wouldn't take a swing with it. It would most likely break very easily after using it for a while
Ebraheem Karim definitely not how you would chop wood if you were actually working. The swings would be much bigger and more powerful, I feel like the axe would fly off after a bit
What you have there is a "pulaski" tool used for fighting forest fires. "The Pulaski is a special hand tool used in fighting wildfires which combines an axe and an adze in one head. Similar to a cutter mattock, it has a rigid handle of wood, plastic, or fiberglass. The Pulaski is used for constructing firebreaks, able to both dig soil and chop wood"
This tool is meant for ground level work...brush fires and trail work since the head doesn't have the mass needed like woodcutters use. Handles are usually long but can be short for inclines like mountain sides. A little too much meat in the handle for my taste as I tend to lose grip after swinging for about an hour.
This axe is a farming implement more than a woodsman tool. It was meant for cutting roots and planting tubers more than chopping wood. I seriously hope no one is complaining about it's performance for a task it was not intended but still did well enough on.
No axe is good for just straight cutting. Literally any axe would've looked just as ineffective if used in the same way as in the demonstration in the video.
Pablo Díaz it has a blade just like an axe, and it can be sharpened to just as sharp as an axe. It might be used differently but it can ultimately perform the same as a normal axe.
pikkuhakki2 no. It's not have the right angles, material and weight distribution. So you think a skidder has 4 wheels It can be as fast as F1 car? Nope
pikkuhakki2 you could see a pulaski fss it is in fact an axe with an hoe. The pulaski as I have just say in the previous coment has different shape weight distribution and made material from the tool of the video
Not very practical, overall, a conventional solid-wood handle is going to be more solid in the long run. But darn if it doesn't look cool, man! That was a fun project to watch. Lots of work there, and it came out looking really neat. Props for the hard work and fun idea! More sharpening, though! That edge needs more!
Dan Brown (not attacking I swear) In my honest opinion I dont think he's planning on using this for actual function, I believe he's just making a unique design
May I suggest using acetone to remove the foam core first? That way when you pour the metal the foam doesn't cause the flame, black ash and horrible chemicals into the air. Its also a lot safer, and gives you a better cast. :) Just leave the acetone to sit for a while (even 12 hours) while it eats away the foam.
When you cast aluminum, you pour the extra out of your crucible into the muffin pan to make easy to melt ingots for your next project. If you let that much metal melt in your crucible it'll cause problems.
Mr. Elemental I thought it was an obvious joke. How wrong I was. No heavy metal puns here? Come on, heavy metal muffins! Eh? Crickets, crickets, crickets.
The anode is where the oxidation of the metal is happening whereas the Axe is reduced from the oxide to the metal, the aluminum is the connector between both anodes, he uses "two" anodes to cover more space
because it's not an axe... it's a mattock and he is using it for the wrong purpose. it's digging tool, also able to cut the occasional root, but it's not an axe and not designed to cut wood.
I don't know if you still watching the comments but when you cast metals in sand you need to compact the sand with a flat stick for a better results and its all... Awesome axe bro congrats!!!
Actually, a pulaski......Originally a farm tool, then modified by (Ed?) Pulaski in early 1900s for brush fire fighting~~ axe-mattock combo.....Am a retired Santa Barbara fireman ('79-2004)....We had'em on all our trucks....
It may be a Pulaski and yes I know his history but I think you’ll find the grubbing mattock on which it’s based is way older than the good old USA, yes there is real history out there, carry on Don before you were so rudely interrupted by Scottybob, oh by the way my house was built before your revolution
G Cairns It’s a Pulaski a type of axe. Like a flathead screwdriver is a type of pry bar. It go choppy chop and diggy dig. The question should be how many fires have you used one on? That’s what it’s for. Fighting fires. Cutting line. Making fire breaks. It’s a Pulaski. A specialized tool for a specific job. Edit: I will garden with a mattock, a pick and shovel, but I took a vow to never pick up another Pulaski again.
Interesting way of making a keyhole integral. It’s very cool to see you make these projects without, as it appears, blacksmithing experience. Makes me want to try and do more things like this.
Be careful sharpening the blades like that, with the pull of the grit coming towards you! If metal every caught on your belt grinder that axe woulda been chucked straight towards your gut! Besides that I love the videos! Keep up the great work!
also, he should have had a guard on that sander, and should not have been reaching over the top like he did. One catch of his t shirt and he gets pulled in for a grinding, if not an impaling. That sentence wasn't meant to sound dirty :/
I have never saw any hand tool with a Wooden handle attached to the tool head with cast aluminum. I was confused at first but then was very impressed as the video continued. Awesome design and build. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah.. It's called a Pulaski where I come from and used for digging in dirt and chopping small roots!! NOT an ANTIQUE AXE for sure!!! Still used buy Fire Fighters and Hiking Trail makers!!
12:30 don't ever sharpen a knife, sword, axe, etc. with the blade facing up like that. At a certain point it will become sharp enough and your essentially shaving the sandpaper instead of the blade. You could damn near cut the belt in half if youre not careful.
Looks like an enchanted item you would find on a quest, i love it, the obvious is obvious on how it would've last as long compared to another axe but who cares? It will probably last your lifetime unless you use your axe EVERY day
pouring molten aluminium into it would ruin the temper, meaning it could have been destroyed on the first use, the grain isnt oriented in the right direction, which could also destroy it on the first use. In the end, it looks nice but is utterly useless and even dangerous to use (if the handle breaks it could injure him or someone else). A polished turd is still a turd
That blade is actually a Polaski, which is a forest fireman’s tool. I saw these in use in 1988 in Yellowstone, the year of the great fire. I found the process quite fascinating. The extra weight on the blade provides for additional power with each stroke. Thumbs up!
??? I'm not so sure I have seen a few Pulaski and while you are right about the placement of Axe blade and adze. I thought (and would be happy to be shown I'm wrong) a Pulaski was on an AXE handle while this seems to be made for a mattock handle. I have not seen this configuration before. Every Pulaski I have seen was axe handled.
Ed Pulaski came up with the idea in the early 1900s, [c. 1911], but ppl in the know have always questioned his "invention" as a variant of the original tool that was made by the Collins Tool Co. back East from whence Ed came. The stories that I heard were that he took their design, modified it and made it his own. Then, later on, Collins modified their Original design to essentially match Pulaski's due to that very popular and successful design. Now, how much truth is in this, or other stories, is fairly hard to determine...
People like this stupid youtuber will grab everthing that have culture and great valor behind and put theyr "touch" on it and soon enough we will have no history or nothing who comes close to that. Fuck.
That is called a Pulaski, after its inventor, a Forest Service Ranger injured in the great fire around the turn of the century. It's a firefighter tool that's axe on one end and pick on the other.
He messed it up when he put an aluminum handle holder there, aluminium is brittle and eventually it will give up. Moreover there's a much simpler solution, we put a round wooden handle through the hole in the middle and put a block at the bottom to prevent it from slipping. That's how ut is usually done, the extra handle holder is just not right.
I liked the idea of adding a little burn strength to the handle, plus it gives it a great look when finished. Looks like maybe a different part of the world from where I live. Different traditions, ideas. Maybe wood disintegrates faster there ? Always fun to watch casting...
for all the people that are hating on this video, it was not worth much in its rusty state, and maybe 100 years old. no museum want a axe that is not that old. first read the description before you post a hate comment or/and dislike.
CursedHunters People are leaving bad comments because they disagree with the design, and they are right to do so. Not only is the handle very bulky, but it still has many weaknesses. Between the aluminum and the keyhole joint this would not be an effective tool. If he made it just to be a show piece fine, but he posted it online where everyone is entitled to an opinion, and what they point out is not wrong.
You pack the sand around the object you want to cast. Foam burns away incredibly fast. The liquid metal burns away the foam and solidifies where the foam used to be. When it cools, it hardens and takes the exact shape left behind from the foam (If you did it right.)
What's happening is that he messed up in the poring the metal allow and he had to do it all over again. In the first try he used 2 holes and in the 2nd try he used 3 holes to make the metal pices fill up right.

mmm true but its not meant for cutting wood in the first place, its a pickaxe or a battleaxe of some sort
Proper name for this is a Pulaski, one of the most useful tools.
Siegfried this is a OG Pulaski. And I agree it is a awesome tool.
Siegfried OFFIC3R PUL4SK1? FROM GT4 S4N 4NDR34S?
One day Black Beard will learn to tamp down his casting sand. But today will not be that day!! 😂

I don't know if you still watching the comments but when you cast metals in sand you need to compact the sand with a flat stick for a better results and its all... Awesome axe bro congrats!!!
He pulled out the wood and I was like finally see me craftsmanship and wood working.
Edit: my disappointment is unbearable.
That is not an axe, it's a mattock
*Edit:* it's actually a Pulaski, similar to a mattock though
Actually, a pulaski......Originally a farm tool, then modified by (Ed?) Pulaski in early 1900s for brush fire fighting~~ axe-mattock combo.....Am a retired Santa Barbara fireman ('79-2004)....We had'em on all our trucks....
Pulaski
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulaski_(tool)
It may be a Pulaski and yes I know his history but I think you’ll find the grubbing mattock on which it’s based is way older than the good old USA, yes there is real history out there, carry on Don before you were so rudely interrupted by Scottybob, oh by the way my house was built before your revolution

It’s a Pulaski. A type of mattock.
Like Phillips is a type of screwdriver.
Why can’t we all just get along?

It’s a Pulaski a type of axe.
I used to restore axes, until I took an arrow to the knee.

More like a modification rather than a renovation, bloody good though
Interesting way of making a keyhole integral. It’s very cool to see you make these projects without, as it appears, blacksmithing experience. Makes me want to try and do more things like this.
Be careful sharpening the blades like that, with the pull of the grit coming towards you! If metal every caught on your belt grinder that axe woulda been chucked straight towards your gut!
Besides that I love the videos! Keep up the great work!
Likewise when chopping 10 cm from his foot
Never sharpen anything like that. Edge being sharpened must be below centre line of grinding device so you can't be impaled.
I cringed when watching that...
also, he should have had a guard on that sander, and should not have been reaching over the top like he did. One catch of his t shirt and he gets pulled in for a grinding, if not an impaling. That sentence wasn't meant to sound dirty :/
+riverhoneybee Or straight in the nuts!
Wow, you really took the guys criticism in the prior video and improved on it.
I have never saw any hand tool with a Wooden handle attached to the tool head with cast aluminum. I was confused at first but then was very impressed as the video continued. Awesome design and build. Thanks for sharing!

Boy Goedegebuure yeah he didn’t sharpen it at all

He did, it's just not supposed to be cutting wood
Yeah.. It's called a Pulaski where I come from and used for digging in dirt and chopping small roots!! NOT an ANTIQUE AXE for sure!!! Still used buy Fire Fighters and Hiking Trail makers!!
I would like to say thank you. You are the first person I have seen that knew what this was
I agree he ruined a perfect tool and tried to make something bad
It's a mattock? Some mattocks have actual axe heads (I have one which I split wood with all the time) others are just for cutting wood.
ron dill
そうなの?
antique means older and rusted
12:30 don't ever sharpen a knife, sword, axe, etc. with the blade facing up like that. At a certain point it will become sharp enough and your essentially shaving the sandpaper instead of the blade. You could damn near cut the belt in half if youre not careful.
I know this is an old video but I still wanted to say, I think that handle is genius. That's a first for me.
It was a great video but why is this recommended to me so much?
11:57 add a beat to this sound.
Ye Booiiiiiii XD
The axe side was used wrong. It is meant for roots.
WOW his hands are really fast!
I know it’s sped up
Looks like an enchanted item you would find on a quest, i love it, the obvious is obvious on how it would've last as long compared to another axe but who cares? It will probably last your lifetime unless you use your axe EVERY day
pouring molten aluminium into it would ruin the temper, meaning it could have been destroyed on the first use, the grain isnt oriented in the right direction, which could also destroy it on the first use. In the end, it looks nice but is utterly useless and even dangerous to use (if the handle breaks it could injure him or someone else). A polished turd is still a turd
Eternal Horizons but it looks cool? Right?
Eternal Horizons it could, but it didn't break, it's going to last a while and look great while doing it
Eternal Horizons stfu
I love seeing the "cameos" of the tools you make in other videos, like the ball bearing knife you made. Really inspiring stuff!
Axe used as pic axe 13:26

You are genius bro
NO val For Sirius A are we playing minecraft?
That blade is actually a Polaski, which is a forest fireman’s tool. I saw these in use in 1988 in Yellowstone, the year of the great fire. I found the process quite fascinating. The extra weight on the blade provides for additional power with each stroke. Thumbs up!
Anyone else wonder how long this acually took?
My best guess would be around 14 minutes and 15 seconds.
Faded_MoonCherry Dawn Maybe 1 Hour
Nice

Awesome job. Just needs to be sharpened a lil more. Looked lime you were having trouble chopping

No don't stop, I love these vid's.
Pretty sure it’s not ‘antique’
It’s just old
I have something truly old I got an antique railroad hammer my great grandpa used it still has the original wood but it's not in the best condition
It looks like it's over 31 years old. It would be an antique then
@@verymelee9115 nope that's not old enough it has to be around 100 years old this isn't even vintage
antique comes from latin word "antiquus" which mean ancient.... So yeah 31 years old is pretty ancient xD

That's not an axe, that's a Pulaski

Digão Yes. An axe has culture.
uma obra de arte. ficou lindo
That is called a Pulaski, after its inventor, a Forest Service Ranger injured in the great fire around the turn of the century. It's a firefighter tool that's axe on one end and pick on the other.
Kind of a mattock with a larger chopping bit.
.25 speed 9:10 basically face reveal
Stoped it at the right moment
What a absolute handsome lad, no homo tho.
Eyes of a hawk
He messed it up when he put an aluminum handle holder there, aluminium is brittle and eventually it will give up.
Moreover there's a much simpler solution, we put a round wooden handle through the hole in the middle and put a block at the bottom to prevent it from slipping. That's how ut is usually done, the extra handle holder is just not right.
Aluminium is no good for hitting things, is a very soft metal that likes to break when stressed.
I liked the idea of adding a little burn strength to the handle, plus it gives it a great look when finished. Looks like maybe a different part of the world from where I live. Different traditions, ideas. Maybe wood disintegrates faster there ? Always fun to watch casting...
bellissima, complimenti !
13:12 the moment when you think you are a woodcutting pro
I'd think the handle would be kinda put at odd forces / stresses during use. Is this just a show piece?
W dougherty Yep, he just made it as a fun experiment, not to actually use!! :)
Recover big ax. Thanks for sharing the video, I'm learning from you!
Wow, that looks amazing, great work!
for all the people that are hating on this video, it was not worth much in its rusty state, and maybe 100 years old. no museum want a axe that is not that old. first read the description before you post a hate comment or/and dislike.
Braden Lumley I hate the design entirely but it's his project and I cba to complain
I dont understand anything between 4 - 6 min
You pack the sand around the object you want to cast.
Foam burns away incredibly fast.
The liquid metal burns away the foam and solidifies where the foam used to be.
When it cools, it hardens and takes the exact shape left behind from the foam (If you did it right.)
FleshlyDelight woah! Thanks for explaining
And what metal he use? It looks like aluminium, but aluminium is too soft, isnt it? :O Or its some alloy?
Šubyk that type of casting is usually aluminum based.
What's happening is that he messed up in the poring the metal allow and he had to do it all over again. In the first try he used 2 holes and in the 2nd try he used 3 holes to make the metal pices fill up right.
