This is literally one of the most causal, but absolutely insane videos out there. I hope everyone knows what was accomplished in this video. THIS IS INSANITY. So sick.
not discounting anything here, but many of the fifty videos are similarly or more insane. cody is a beast, but this being east coast does make it so much more impressive.
@@colterfpv I’m a huge Cody fan and totally agree he’s a beast but the fifty episodes are a whole production, this is such a casual video. When I first saw this I thought he had taken a different route and the skin in was closer to 13 miles. But either way 10k vert after the 5 runs he did I don’t think you can argue it’s pretty insane
@@PatrickHennessey1764 you were right the first time. Round trip according to Andrews's Strava was 27 miles 10k ft vert. At least half of that breaking trail. It's a gnarly solo day, for sure. Congrats to Andrew from such a baller day in the mountains.
@@PatrickHennessey1764 oh, cool. Yeah, this is ridiculous, especially considering how rare this zone is. Would like to ski it one day but I should probably do tucks more first.
@@tjanson these stats should have been included in the video
The effort just to get to the top of Katahdin itself is a major feat in those conditions, let alone the incredible skiing and ice climbing.
I had no idea maine had this, wow. This is amazing. Looks like the rockies.
Maine sucks tell your friends
From where I usually ski (powdery Massif du Sud), we can see, on clear days, the huge Kathadin Massif about 150 km south. What a place in the middle of Baxter. It’s already tough ones to ascend Chimney couloir, Cathedral and and Knife Edge in the summer, but you skied that just like Bliz of Aaahs would do it, back in the days. Major… respect and thanks, from Quebec Appalachia. 💪🏽
This is an INCREDIBLE ACCOMPLISHMENT!!! Congrats! Ski The Whites has reached LEGEND status!
Holy breakable crust Batman! You don't see your average hack skiing this shit. This is really strong skiing; crust, sastrugi, wind slab and narrow. Full value, nice job!! Good music too.
Good thing this isn't one of the 50 classic ski descents. Vail resorts would be building a mega resort on katahdin
Fast and confident above exposure. Wind slab on ice sketch. Cleaned the couli with hardly a side slip. No stop cruxes. Conditions don't get much better for steeps. Freshies all day!!! So fun to watch. And a monster on the up too! What a day you had
Huge props for having balls made of brass. I live a couple hours away from Katahdin and have done a pile of climbing there. Never skied it. Great video.
What the fuck. I was out there earlier this season, and can confirm that this video is beyond ridiculous. Doing all this (especially solo) is an absolutely insane effort.
Been there, never with this much snow. You’re a beast just to get there and back. Let alone to have the energy to ski also. Very impressive
I grew up in Maine and now live a short drive from the ski areas of the Wasatch in Utah. I think Katahdin still scares me more than most of the mountains in Utah, hard to say why. I guess it’s still pretty prominent and very remote.
As someone who also watches Appalachian Trail hikers, it is really fascinating to see it from this perspective
Looks like someone grabbed a couloir from the Tetons and popped it down in the middle of Maine! Sick!
Really hard just to get through the park to the base of the climb in the winter. Outstanding video!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; Drummond makes the BEST (imo🤷🏻♂️), east coast vids out there!! This is an epic tour man, thanks for the amazing footage of Maine’s finest!
Stay safe out there 👍🏻
wow! heck of an adventure and great work documenting! those ski lines looked gnarly. Looking forward to being back in your neck of the woods this summer for MT. WA!
wasn't expecting to see (another) legend in the comments...this is the good part of youtube
I don’t comment on a lot of videos, but I had to on this one. Beyond extremely impressive. 🤯
Such an impressive daytrip!
Good to see you’re back!
Best footage of the Chimney. Thank you
A beautiful and brave ski mission
nice work, fun to see katahdin in the winter
Epic ski line, on the list for sure
Absolutely incredible. Stuff like this keeps me dreaming.
So impressive Andrew!
Some climber is going to crawl up that couloir later in the spring, see a bit of a ski track in the last bit of snow, and won't believe his own eyes.
Holy Big Balls Batman!! Congrats. Unbelievable video!!
This is insane man, good for you!
Beautiful line.
Top-to-bottom, dude! Great run after an epic hike.
great work!
Truly epic! Katahdin is a beast in the summer... Massive respect Andrew!
Great job. Clearly took a high level of commitment.
Your a complete bad ass Andrew. Thanks for sharing
Great work damn that takes everything talent and a ton of cardio..
Epic video!
My group was there just a few days before you. Glad the snow that created sketchy avalanche conditions for us stabilized a bit for you! It's insane you did all this in a day
Everything was wind affected and stable by the time I got there. It's amazing how the wind swirls in the Great Basin and rips back up the couloir.
You must still be shaking from the rush of this day on the Mountain. Incredible achievement. Better than a gold medal!!
@@andrew.drummond absolute madness! You've inspired me to send a barbaric day trip like this for next winter. Do you ever ski the southeastern-facing gullies off of the knife edge towards Avalanche Brook?
You are doing some next level living out there!
Outstanding!
Just AWESOME!
it just doesnt get better than that. Great work. Just a gorgeous line in what appear to be all time conditions
Nice little adventure 👊🏼💪🏼🙏🏼
So bad ass… beyond cool🙌🙌
baxter is my favorite place on earth so far. grew up near there.
So sick!!
Props dude. I've done the one day mission in the winter in up Katahdin and out but never ski descended. Epic. Hats off
Awesome !!! have not seen this at Katahdin ...great video ...great Mountain ....i only know it backpacking ....wishful thinking to do what you did and survive...good going 👍
Really good stuff
bro.... you are so gnarly! who tf down climbs like that? your avalanche awareness is next level. Love to see all the winter tools come out (skis, shoes, axes, crampons)
Weather looked good
Nice video sir!
So sick!
Well done. Looked like the worst part was just getting to the chute. The snow condition(s) looked pretty consistent throughout.
This is insane
heinously cool
Badass!
KING OF THE NORTH
Epic🔥
Beautiful turns! Most ppl would have slipped the narrow chokes…
Cool as hell
so rad man
So insane.
Unreal
Wow…. Incredible clip! Congrats and Thanks for sharing. How long did it take to hike up Abol? How long did it take to ski down the Chimney? Crazy shit…
gotta do what you gotta do😆🧡
You are certifiably insane. Please stay safe.
Neat!
When did it snow in again had permits to camp and climb for last weekend but the peeps at Baxter State park office said Chimney and most routes were unclimbable because trails were turned to mud and everything had melted over the past month. So we climbed Boott Spur in NH instead exact sane date as when it said this was climbed.
It snowed 22" Saturday (23rd) but before last week it was looking grim. A lot of parties had bailed on their plans because of the conditions but that's the nature of this winter.
Hey Andrew thanks for the reply!
I see I see yeah I was pretty sure the repirts coming in the week prior were saying in was bad. So I guess Baxter got hit with the same system as the Whites then! Glad you got out there and did some lines with the rejuevenated conditions🤙 Thanks for some great footage of the Chimney full line btw!
@@andrew.drummond any chance of climbing this on the 8th for the eclipse ? dead center of totality
Wait, this is Maine? I’m from NE and never knew it could look like you’re in the Rockies
This is not even the tallest mountain in New England.
🙌🙌🙌
Get some!!!
Wicked
Holy gnar. What do u use to measure avy risk out there
Insane….
Ho Shit!!! Great, totally, great.
This was awesome. How'd you assess the avy risk of skiing that couloir? Obviously the wind was doing some interesting stuff to the snow. Just wondering as a total backcountry beginner; thanks!
Good question, going top down is always a bit risky but having familiarity with the area, beta from a previous party, and accessing as I descended allowed to manage the risk appropriately.
@@andrew.drummond thanks!
Tuckermans just got downgraded to a blue square.
Vacationland
Is that a snowmobile machine at 0:33? haha all jokes aside, epic video! When was this filmed?
Yup, that's the Abol Campsite Ranger Station - that's how they access from the parking lot ~5mi out.
I find it redicoulus that motorcycles are banned from this park but snow machines can brap brap all winter long down the Park Tote Road.

6:33 dude don't tell me you had to break out that skin track you're ripping down back to Abol...
thought baxter state park is closed in the winter
After each run are you teleporting back up to the summit?
Did you see the other skiers who skied Howe?
Yes - I was trying to meet up with them. They were skiing Hamlin all morning and by the time I got to Hamlin, they went to the North Basin. We were able to boot out together and ski Hamlin. They had a massive day, skiing from 4am to 4pm.
Some of them till 5:30pm.... saw you skinning back across tableland as we dropped our last line. Nice work, what a day! Cheers from the pirate snowboarder.
What skis are those?
They are Ski Trab Magico.2 - just enough ski to move fast on the ups and still have fun on the descents.
If only it were prettier. 😆
This is out of control
children do not try this at home! 🙂
Great..... but the music KILLS it!!!! Youre smarter than that. My two cents....
Just the stupidity alone for skiing without a body that baffles my mind I don’t care how good of a hiker or a ski you are
