Competition: my wife and I actually did cross shop the Q7. It’s much smaller. 14 cubes behind the third row vs 23 for the Buick... AND the Buick has 4” more legroom in that third row. The people+cargo equation isn’t even close. I love Audis, but we can’t give up that much functionality. MDX, similar problem, third row nowhere nearly as useful as the Buick. And honestly, the Avenir holds its own in terms of interior quality and features. Volvo: They’ve gone off the rails with using overstressed 4-cyl engines in everything, and I was super let down by the buggy software in the S90’s infotainment stack... the XC90 is similar. They look fantastic inside and out, but the actual user experience was an annoying letdown. Price: bear in mind you’re looking at sticker. You don’t ever have to pay sticker for a GM vehicle. Some brands don’t really discount, but I can get a 2018 Avenir that stickers at $60k for under $54k. I even found one example being cleared out for $50k ($59,490 MSRP).
Good solid review of a good solid vehicle, Jeff. Covered all the aspects and you nailed the competition' that people would cross-shop . I don't think this compares with the luxury marques even with the Avenir package but Infinti, Acura are fair game. l would also consider the Ford Explorer and even the GMC Acadia as competitors.
First of all, all that tacky shining chrome is for the elderly. Younger generations hate it. Living where premium cars are built (Europe), i see premium cars every day. Tacky american cars, not so much.

This isn't just a Buick thing, so don't jump all over me. I've been crammed in the 3rd row on more than one occasion. Mostly because I'm less likely than some to lose my lunch or complain loudly. If you're trying to claim 7 seats, why cram 3 in the tightest and most narrow spot in the whole vehicle? That 3rd row goes from uncomfortable to absolutely awful if you need that middle seat. Could you imagine 3 people in that back row? You must really hate thoe 3 people that have to sit there. All so you can show off your "awesome" captains chairs in the middle. Just doesn't make any sense. Plus now, you fold that last row down for some storage and lugging around stuff.. and because it's not a solid middle row.. you have a great launching pad for whatever to come fly towards the first row at the first hard braking. *shakes head*
You got that right, the third row is the worst place to sit people, my 160 lb grandson was stuck back there for 4 hours, poor kids was in pain … And the front seats are like sitting on boards wrapped in leather, had to buy a cushion to sit on. My Ford F150 seats are much more comfortable ...
If you like this platform, but need 3 in 2nd row, then the Chevy Traverse at least has the option on the lower/mid trim levels. I like the new Enclave but will overlook it b/c of this one thing - lack of 3 seats in 2nd row. So will look at Honda Pilot. A minivan is still the best of all worlds - comfort, seating space/options and cargo capacity.
