My brother had a solid theory as to why the Switch port is THAT bad. That being that it’s the same problem the Dark Souls port had. They compressed the entire game to fit on the cheapest possible cartridge. If you think about it this way, it makes a lot of sense. The compressed sprites, the long loading times, the transition bugs, everything. Just like what happened with Dark Souls.
I theorized that as well, it's not far fetched to do that as it saves a lot of time making a whole new port from scratch. Good thing I am not the only one who thought that way.
Arc System Works seems to have an Asia branch that likes compressing games as much as possible. They've been melting Square Enix pixel art into jpeg-artifacted mush for Asian Switch releases for a few years now, and judging by the result, Ruina was probably the same team. Going for highest possible compression also means everything takes a lot longer to uncompress on a low-powered system... It doesn't even seem to be motivated by cart size. Romancing Saga 2 got reduced from 1.5GB global to 500MB Asia, when the smallest carts are 2GB. Ruina got reduced from 7GB to 5GB on Switch, which is... not small enough to fit on a 4GB cart, just leaves more empty space on an 8GB one.

I have the switch port and I still enjoy it because library of ruina itself is a good game also I don’t get the unplayable part because it works fine some crashes here and there but atleast not during receptions i’m currently at yan and xiao and they work perfectly fine. but maybe as a person who just has a switch I have a lower standard and more focus on personal enjoyment also I get to play loland simulator on the go. also “my name is roland from library of ruina on the nintendo switch”
Compared to the PC and to my personal experience with it, it is too slow for me to be considered playable, that and the menu behaves weirdly for a console game due to the controls and the bugs that are riddled with it. As much as I love the game, I cannot play it on the console due to those problems. It's all things I have personally experienced (without the Xiao reception, I only heard about it while skimming through comments over on twitter) but if you enjoy it and have fun, hey, all the power to you. @@arbiterVito in that case I think you need to re-evaluate your standards if you're gonna judge a switch port of a PC game. It's a bit unfair to say it's trash when you compare it to PC and PS, both of which have obviously better specs.

No, I will not re-evaluate my standards and give the port a pass. To me it's not acceptable as a port and thus, I will not retract any statements regarding to its horrible performance. It's a real shame that such an amazing game got such a terrible port Some of the bugs are just rediculous, makes you think, did they even test it while developing??
Since this is arcsys we're talking about, who made the port, i have to say this lack of quality is out of character for them. Its genuinely weird that they dropped the ball on the switch port so badly, considering how their other games switch ports are almost always spot on. Makes you wonder if it was an executive that made the decision to ship it in that state, and i hope that executive was fired for gross incompetence. And as for the nintendolife "journalist" who played the game? Well he actually admitted he never played past urban plague...
Looking back, I tried to give Nintendolife the benefit of the doubt, in a rather goofy twist though I ended up forgetting what reasonings I even tried to give. Of course nowadays I feel bad for trying to give them any benefit of the doubt, the port itself? The thing I'm most upset by in the Switch port of Ruina is that I can't name my nuggets or give them unique dialogue. I'm not upset by the whiplash in sprite quality that sometimes happens (the Floor Realizations are especially bad for this), or how slow the game runs (Yesod's floor especially). I had only one or two crashes in my playthrough. I did complete the game before the first patch that came to the port. I'm not even annoyed by the fact that there's lyrics missing in the in-game soundtrack version of String Theocracy, or the load times, or anything. Just let me name my nuggets.
After seeing what the game actually looks like, I kinda see where the reviewer was coming from. The switch port makes lor look like some random, switch game you would find on sale at a GameStop in 2 years, which could be a reason he just gave up on it. Baffled he never mentioned the horrible performance, though.
THANK YOU You cant even dare to imply that the switch port may be less than great, or that the games may not be perfect in everything for the community to get overly defensive in my experience
I didn't have any of these loading issues or slowness! I played day 1 and even updated the switch version and both no issues. I did have the delay from Librarian, Pages, Books but seeing as it goes from not existing to slowly a delay it's definitely loading then in on menu change Also XIAO theme DOES PLAY! The transformations I think are cut or they are the delay because Blue Gunner Syncro, Genbura, and Xiao all have a very noticable delay between transformation "effect", music, and snap. Also the text in general portable and docked are WAY TOO SMALL!!!!
I'd also like to comment on the port, I think that the low res is strictly to optimize the game to be able to run on the switch. In case you're not aware the switch has specs below the PS4 so it's not a surprise on how much you'd need to cut to actually be able to run a game made for PC.
That's a fair arguement. Although, I still find it ridiculous that the High Quality setting is this. I don't even want to know what the low quality setting looks like. Still, some of the things are inexcusable such as the port still running too slow despite the quality already going down the drain or the pre-rendered video of String Theocracy glitching out during the cutscene.

I've been playing Ruina on the switch for a bit and I think I've had bleed bugs? Like my bleed was decreasing not every time I rolled an offensive die. I've definitely noticed the low resolution (as someone who has not seen ruina on any non switch medium). Reading small fonts is pain but omg there was this one realization (I think Tipereth?) where you could not identify the characters anymore (you know, the unique Tipereth realization gimmick).
