As a viewer, not vlogger, it's a definite upgrade from the GoPro as I found when TMF switched many months ago. The difference is he's still faffing and you seem to have pretty much have nailed it first time! I like your current audio settings as they're allowing more ambient noise, whereas TMF's are more "boxed" in which I thought was just how it was. Visual wise, personal preference is Rock Steady but each to their own. I'm sure it'll be a keeper...👍

    • @Disposalist
      @Disposalist 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the difference is, if I remember correctly, TMF uses the wired mic with an adapter rather than the wireless mic with bluetooth (he always seems to have his gain set too high also hehe. Lots of distortion...)
The bluetooth wireless is surprisingly good (though I've seen people using it with non-DJI mics and suddenly the quality is horrible).

Kate I can say your new DJI set up knocks the Go-Pro into the weeds, in particular the audio was a 1000% better even at speed with your visor open. DJI has to be the way to go. Thank you.

From your review and what I’ve read and seen from reviewers of photography and videography tech, the Dji gets the thumbs up.
No overheating issues, and quality of the final product.
You are one lucky lady to get it for free.

Well I don't know about you, but I'd say that's ticked a few boxes for you Kate. Even fast with visor up was perfectly audible and nice that the engine comes through as well. It's a double thumbs up from me! (nice to see Beatrice too!)

Do not take any criticism on board, this is a better than before but you were good with what you had,
I like all your videos especially with your girls.
You ride great and also communicate with being distracted.

Better sound Quality, Rock Steady is fine.. I would up the exposure either on the camera or in post.. especially as the sky is lower up North😉I would also up the saturation a little. The clarity is excellent. I find a chest mount is not great on an adventure bike, because of the screen. Better on the helmet. Always enjoy your presenting style.

I have the same setup, by face is much bigger than yours & no way I can mount the mic to the cheek pad haha. But... With the chin curtain on I can just leave the mic laying on the curtain at the bottom of the helmet. The issue is the mic connecting to the camera when your on a tour and switching the camera on and off all the time. Also great for track days Kate as you can mount the camera on the bike and still have helmet audio!!

I am already a convert, love my osmo action 4. Find the battery lasts longer than the go pro 10 (that bo is using), I find the magnetic mount system really easy and quick to use. You have done a great job on the settings, I am now very tempted to go out and buy the transmitter and wireless mic as still currently syncing up audio in edit 😖😩
Keep up the great work Kate 👍 👏

Dear Kate, The audio also depends on the bike you are on and its windshield configuration. It appears the buffeting causes the audio quality disruption. Another bike may not have the buffeting. (you later tested this...microphone visor down likely little effect by bike configuration)
    Simon & Garfunkel ! Wonderful!
Smart windscreen test! No difference in quality, so good to go on that front.
Overall, the audio quality is better than previous setup.
Visor down: sounds LESS like "speech in a barrel" than previous...but you ARE speaking in a barrel. (real life, sort of a GOOD thing) The extraneous noise is certainly GREATLY reduced, and WAY better than before.
Visor up :Sounds more like real life but Clear. (which is a good thing!)
OVERALL: DJI is better, but also different. It reflects real life better than previous, but improves clarity
If you could lose some of the "Barrel" effect by repositioning or some adjustment(s), that would be perfect! (I really don't know if this is possible)
Picture clarity is superb, especially at the end...look at horizon & clouds, then at dashboard...both clear! Wonderful!
P.S.: I went to the Shotgun 650 "sport bike?" test and compared, came back here and amended comments to reflect truth better.

Your audio with this video is really good, clear and very audible. Even when you did the bit without a windscreen, it was a little crackly but your voice was easily heard over the little bit of crackling. So much better than with your old set up. The camera, though, seems to be struggling with exposure. It's underexposing most of the time because your video seems a little darker than usual especially in cloudy or tree covered areas. In sunshine or when it detects a light area, like a break in the tree cover, it's really overexposing and blowing out the lighter areas. Maybe there's a way to tweak the exposure settings. Image stabilization is great. Best in the center of the 3-split screen. I noticed that exposure was also better in the center of the 3-split screen. The left and right screens are very dark/underexposed especially the right screen. On a side note, I'm with you, I don't think your part of the world got the message that it's summer. My part of the world (western US) got the memo and it's been extremely hot and dry. Too hot to enjoy riding some days. The heat just saps your energy. Keep up the motovlogging, Kate. I really enjoy your videos, especially your bike reviews.

I am so glad you have got the DJI Action 4. It’s an amazing camera, couple that with the wireless mic (which you have mounted perfectly and it’s crystal clear) it’s a great setup! The only criticism I have is with the ultra wide angle, I prefer just the wide angle but obviously that’s personal preference. It won’t stop me watching your videos in the slightest.
Your videos have just hit a new level now. Amazing Kate. Don’t worry about the whole editing stuff, I would have no idea how to edit videos so your doing a better job than most people 👍🏻

  • @ImJensenKing
    @ImJensenKing 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

There is a known issue with mic not being detected immediately on startup so always check, this ca be an issue when using snapshot mode so keep an eye on it Kate. Overall it’s not a bad setup but they all have quirks to get to know none of them are perfect. Much better than snap, crackle, pop 👍 #ridesafe

Much better audio Kate, that now sounds absolutely fine. Even at speed it is much clearer speech and hardly any annoying crackling or wind noise. Very impressive. Did notice the horizon on the video moving around a bit more than your other videos though. Don't know if that is the self-levelling of the DJI Cam struggling compared to GoPro, or if you were just moving around a lot more when recording the footage. Some people may get similar feelings to sea-sickness if the horizon is moving a lot, so just wanted you to be aware of that. Probably being picky, but I work in AV so tend to notice these things.

Bloody hell Kate, you've sold me!!! I have the same requirements and just seeing AND hearing the quality improvements plus the ease of use, I'm checking out the DJI's accessories you've used and buying these tomorrow. I know you're not paid from DJI, but watching your review has tipped my decision to swap out my GoPro. I've had the same audio issues when at higher speed, ie audio crackling so just hearing how you sound with the wireless transmitter in your helmet is a very big plus! Ease of use is also important and I hate fiddling with the media mod so having less to deal is a bonus. Thank you Kate for the lovely review, can't wait to see what other tips & tricks you pick up now with the new camera setup. 🔥🎉

Hi Kate, great to see you trying the DJI kit. I am very new to motovlogging and own 3 Osmo Action 4's (one on my chin, one on my wifes chin and one on my bars) and also a pair of the DJI Mic2's that we have mounted to cold-shoe mounts that are glued inside our chin bars, as the mic clip slides nicely into them. I have the mic gain set to -12 for me and -7 for my wife and have been quite please with our audio. Yours sounds even better though, with more engine and less wind, so I'm not sure what you have done, but it works! I also don't bother with the cage as I don't record in portrait, so that saves a bit of bulk and makes battery changes easier.
I love these cameras, as they just work, and the wireless mic means no worry from wet weather, but if you wake the camera up using the quickshot function, they can take around 20 seconds to reconnect, so just something to be aware. It's worth watching Dave on WheeliegoodTV and Nick on MotoUK channels as they have some great info on these cameras and mics that really helped me as a complete beginner.
Keep us posted on how you get on and your preferred settings, as I am always happy to learn from the experts 😁

As a watcher, a biker (newbie) and an audio engineer, this definitely 👍🏻 improves your audio. I currently use an insta360 with synco transmitter and wireless mic, this sounds good, but not sure about weather resistant. I’m newbie to biking, and currently on holiday, but hoping to make some videos when I get back. Dji is the way to go I think 🤔 I use the Mavic 3 drone. Amazing. Enjoy 👍🏻

The sound is good already, Kate, and I expect you haven't fiddled much with the settings and setup? So it's a great start.
You're absolutely right, I think, that there is a minimum quality of audio that, if you are below, people just cringe and stop watching!
I motovlog just for my own fun, but I've done some varied audio testing, so this will probably be a long comment....
The main trick, I've found, is to have the sensitivity (gain) set as low as possible so you don't get ambient noise (wind) picked up. With low gain, you can get the mic near your mouth so that your voice is best isolated and loud enough, but also, you don't want it too near so that your voice gets distorted as it naturally varies.
I found having the mic in my chin guard halfway along my lower jaw, just against my chubby jowls, was good. I had to tape up an air vent in there too to stop the mic getting whistling air over it.
The crackling, distortion and ducking (sudden volume drop) of audio you used to get was almost certainly the GoPro trying to cope with delivering your voice audio when the wind/bike noise was getting loud. That kind of automatic gain compensation and processing is horrible for audio quality and the less the recorder has to do, the better (hence positioning/shielding being vital).
Switch off all automatic gain control and wind compensation if possible. It will always sound bad. If the mic gets wind, you need to move/shield it.
The DJI Camera with Wireless Mic bluetooth connection is indeed, I think, the simplest and 'cleanest' setup if you just want a camera synced to voice mic (and I've tried various setups...)
I found, however, that because I want to capture the sound of the bike too, you simply can't rely on the 'voice' mic, because, if to get good voice audio, you have to intentionally isolate from all other audio.
For me, because I don't really do the 'live' ride voice over, the GoPro is still king because of its onboard mic raw audio setting.
The raw option gives you uncompressed, unprocessed wav files with separate channels for each of its three mics.
These have to be processed (applying amplification, limiting, low/high pass filters, etc using an app like Audacity) but give very good ambient bike engine/exhaust sound from a GoPro on the chin and it sounds very much like what you hear in your helmet as a rider, except if you use a foam windjammer, there is almost no wind noise even at speed. It's surprisingly good.
If that processing sounds complicated, yes, it is rather, but it's the best way I've found to get nice bike audio from a relatively simple setup.
I also tried that with the DJI wireless Mic2, but it is made to isolate nearby voice, and understandably the recording of 'ambient' sound is not good.
Check out my vids if you're interested. Happy to chat further if you want to message.
For me, if I were to want live voice-over, I would put my wireless mic in the chin guard, but have it recording in its own memory, and just place the audio over the video in editing.
Because it is isolating your voice, you shouldn't have to worry about syncing closely with the video and can probably chop up your commentary and put it wherever you like.
I'll have to give that a go and see for myself... I feel another 'fun' audio testing YT coming on hehe.
It's all six of one and half-a-dozen of the other when it comes to how much faff you can stand versus how much flexibility and quality you want!
    Good luck!

Sound is a 100% improvement. The cracks and sometime wind noise on the old system was hard to bear sometimes.
The picture quality is better overall but I would say currently a bit dark. For excample the dash of your GS is hard to read. There are others with DJI, who seem to have a bit brighter picture. Maybe it was also because of the overcast day and I don´t know the time you recorded it.
Overall a big improvement for me personally. And since I am not a vlogger or user of these cams, I don´t really care about the manufacturer you use, just the outcome.

Hi Kate. I recently got this set up and I 3M (double sided taped) the mic magnet to the inside of the chin section of my helmet so I can pop the mic in and out easily and it doesn't touch my face, I can also see the blue light go solid for when it's connected to the camera (bonus). So if I'm riding and recording I know if the mic is flashing the connection isn't working between the two and I need to stop and sort it. Also for camera view, as a viewer I think wide angle is better then ultra wide as it feels less fishbowl/insta360 and more FPV accurate. Great video, thank you!

I would add a sixth point Kate. That would be robustness. Clipping and unclipping will take its toll on most devices along with battery swaps if you can do that. Versatility of mounts could be another but from my limited knowledge that might not be an issue. A head to head comparison of different setups on the same ride would be interesting with two riders using different kit. Sometimes if you are comfortable with a setup with arguably inferior spec equipment might produce a better motor vlog if you don't get the fatigue of uncomfortable stuff, safer too on a bike. Many thanks for sharing.

Yep, the depth of view is better on the dji stuff, audio sounds fine. What I like about the audio pic-up, is it’s still atmospheric with the background and bike noise. Best way I can describe it, is it’s like conversing over comms, rather than a ‘studio’ recorded track. I’ve with some success used my DJI pocket 2 mounted on the front of the helmet. Lovely and stable. About as watertight as a sponge though.. 👍

I've always had to boost the colour, sometimes its just the weather. I normally record low sensitivity and raise it in post on the Osmo its about -18. action 4, the little mod and a purple panda.
To add, I've been out in horrible weather with the side case off and never had issues. I even put a battery in the washing machine by accident the other day and thankfully its fine.

really impressed with the audio, especially at higher speed and with no wind protection! Picture quality is great, better than the GoPro - negligible at that quality anyway, but there seem to be loads of positives for the DJI Osmo. Wonder how you would get on with the ace pro as a comparison..

Rock steady plus for me, love the sound quality, very good with those DJI mics. I like the GoPro picture quality, there's something nice about it, I also like the artificial colour quality of Insta, even though the picture quality is low, due to it being a 360 camera. I'm not sure the Insta picture colour and quality would mix with the Osmo camera. Just my initial thoughts. Look forward to seeing how this progresses.

Sound was good when visor is closed. Video is under exposed when you have a strong back light. Otherwise not bad for a first outing. Image is better with stabilisation on

Been using DJI Actions since the first version Kate, Never had 1 shutdown, or lost footage in 10 years so for me was happy with dji over GoPro. The Action 4 at present is the best all rounder and best for audio capture imo. Settings i use are 4k or 2.7k in 60fps however 50mph is also good.manual at 5600k and all other is in auto. The mic i have found best set up to be using their mic adapter wired with has to be their lav mic to get best results. Mic is set to -5db. Thanks Nick aka “Motouk” just realised im writing this from my sailboat channel 😂 hope your well Kate 👍

Hi Kate for ease of use this is probably the best setup on the market right now! Certainly sounds better than your old setup & certainly mine & yes it’s painful syncing external audio recorders to video footage, especially if the video pauses to save a file & you don’t have any audio clues. Most noticeable was the lack of wind noise at high speeds & Rock Steady gives that perfect natural balance to the video footage it seemed a little darker than your normal footage guess that’s the ND filter. But if you don’t like it you can post it to me so I can test it 😂.
Honestly I get better sound from 2 recorders than straight from the insta360 r/s but it’s a faff to edit! Plus lots of variables for settings and testing is a nightmare.

I ditched GoPro last year, haven’t looked back, so many reasons why DJI are better. 1. No loss of sound 2. No freezing 3. Quick release 4. Wireless mics connect wirelessly 5. Video files stack better and less files 6. Doesn’t over heat 7. User interface is better. That alone is enough

Kate, have just bought the 4 and the DJI Mic 2 and today was first ride with both! Still not massively happy with position of Mic 2, but reviewed footage this morning and sounded great!
My worry is for longer rides, with only 2 hours, you’re going to need a charge on a long day of riding! Or a backup Lav mic?!

and now I've watched through, I'll give a slightly biased, sound is great, image quality is sharper than the gopro which was expected. As for settings, I borrowed directly from a recent post by the @thebonniebiker for sound. Microphone set to -7 gain and i've been clipping to the inside of my jacket collar or magnet to my tshirt under a knox tor, with deadcat of course, gives a great mix of induction, exhaust and background cardo chatter. I've not worked out getting the Cardos connected yet, but who wants to listen to a fat man talk about cake for several hours, my riding buddies get enough of that already.
Still playing with video settings, but last weekend chucking it in 4k60, wide, rocksteady+ with it hanging on for dear life on a hard mounted Ulanzi bar setup on my street triple RS gave great results for a rank amateur! Even if I do say so myself.
I'm comparing to my own previous setups as well, which were (a prehistoric) GoPro, and briefly an Insta360 X3 which I ended up sending back after a heap of issues. Miss the 360 degree footage, but I think the Osmo is far far crisper and so far, 100% more reliable! Just need to buy some ND Filters to make me look as fast as I feel :)

Hi Kate, I watch your videos on a large screen tv, hence I believe the picture quality would be better if set to 4K 30fps, worth a try. Please can you show how you have mounted the dji mic2 in the helmet… I tried the Osmo 4 and found the picture quality good but prefer the Insta 360 Pro for a more natural colour profile.

Great video as always, audio is so much better, I guess a good helmet also helps overall, though you are probably using the same helmet as you did with your GoPro set up, I recently bought 2 Action4 camera's and think they are great, but I've never owned a GoPro, so I've nothing to compare them with. I have the original DJI Mic and have been using them for testing, but think I will buy a mic 2 transmitter as audio syncing after is a pain and FCPX isn't doing a great job, and ends up a lot of time wasting. I'm not a Vlogger, hate the sound of my voice LOL, But I've bought the cameras for an up and coming tour to Spain, filming is a lot of fun! Currently playing around with angles and waiting the arrival of a Chin Mount. Funnily today I tried filming in 2.7k, to save space on SD card, as we will have long days in the saddle on tour. Need to work out how to edit it in FCPX as there doesn't seem to be settings for 2.7K, Anyway, it's a great set up you have, and the audio is much better than before, though the GoPro setup is still very go. One trick, if you fine you want to move the mic to the chin guard, (though I don't think you need to) get some magnetic tape and put a couple of strips where you want to attach the DJI Mic, The magnets will snap to the tape, and you are good to go, though you may get your nose tickled :) Great test of the DJI set up!

Sound is pretty good and if it makes your workflow easier - go with it! I've yet to test it but so far I've got a Insta360 Ace Pro (might be adding an X4 soon) and Rode Wireless Pro (using 1 for voice and 1 with an Audix D4 to capture engine/exhaust sounds). Have you tried using the horizon levelling option? (I think it's only available in 2.7K).

Seen a lot of people moving over to the DJI Osmo from GoPro recently and can see why from the footage and audio that people have been posting has even been on par with the GoPro or better. I am getting fed up of my GoPro freezing and losing video footage but problem is I can't really afford to switch over to DJI at the moment so will have to put up with it for a bit longer but certainly be a switch I look to make in the future.

I'm far from a motovlogger, but I use the INSTA 360 ONE RS as a "dashcam", and occasionally share my rides in 360. That said though, the battery life is so bad that I'm lucky if I get much over an hour out of it if it's not connected to the powerbank I carry in my handlebar mounted toolbag. Thankfully though, I haven't had it cut out cause the battery overheated, even in the Australian summer on full day rides at temps well into the mid 40c range. I've been considering switching to the DJI cameras, but if the battery overheats indoors in the UK, I'm not sure it would handle Australia too well. The audio on the DJI is great though (much better than the INSTA 360, and GoPro), and the video for that matter too, and I think they suit your type of content creation perfectly, and as a bonus, they're cheaper than the majority of the competition.
Stay safe, keep your head on a swivel, and keep it shiny side up. 🤘

Hey Kate another really good video thanks (it's taken me a while to catch up with them all...). For me the OSMO 4 quality, viewed back to back with similar light conditions footage (and at the same quality) from your GoPros, is (subjectively I think) slightly better. There's a quality to the OSMO that I like. It is a bit crisper in detail while being smoother to my eyes, and I think it has more dynamic range (more visual information/data captured between the extremes of light and dark - soz I'm a boring photographer and soz x 2 if I'm teaching you to suck eggs!) which gives more 'depth' to the footage. Your GoPro footage is absolutely fine btw, I just think I prefer this. Certainly on the OSMO there's better detail in the overcast but bright sky, while capturing good detail in the shadows of the dash of the bike, which is always a nightmare for camera sensors. Audio seemed pretty good too, especially on the motorway.
BTW it's great to see someone else from the right part of the world making it good on the TH-cam. Big up Lancashire! I was born and raised there and often return to see my mum. Looking at getting a new action camera as I'VE JUST BOUGHT MY FIRST BIKE (woot woot - passed my test on Monday at 53 years of age 🙂) and the DJI is on my list. Thanks again and keep doing what you do (and ignore the haters!!). Ta, Ben

I like the bloggers who use this equipment while recording themselves. Having watched this video all the way through, I noticed the sibilance was very prominent in the audio. Is this controllable in the camera or in your video software?

  • @adammcallister2260
    @adammcallister2260 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I’m still watching but just a point on your thoughts regarding 2.7k and 4k. You may not see a difference in quality while editing if you’re only using a 2k or even 1080p display. If you are using a 4k monitor then I find smaller screens make little difference to visual quality. The only people missing out would be those of us using large screens to watch your content. That being said, I’ve never noticed anything wrong with the picture quality of what you produce.
Audio quality seems very good. Maybe there’s a very minor distortion on S sounds but that might be me overly focussing on the quality and looking for faults. Otherwise, it seems spot on. High speed audio with visor up or down was excellent. Seems to pick up some more engine noise when you pulled up at the lights following the motorway stint.
Rock Steady seems to work great, though that dart left and right in the first clip without Rock Steady was excellent. Let’s put that down to your riding skills!
You should find keeping all your stuff in one house gets you the best seamless experience. It should all work together much better than a string of different aftermarket products that might not all play ball with each other.
Looks like you’ve got this cracked though!

  • @trevormoss1396
    @trevormoss1396 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hello Kate. For what it's worth the only thing that I found an issue with that footage was probably attributable to the ND filter you mentioned experimenting with.
I'm sure you'll find the balance you want if not already.
Maybe forget about us and take both out mounted in a similar position on the bike side by side so that you can have a true direct comparison of the images. ( I do prefer the colour balance you have established in the old setup )
That way it's not an issue of was there more cloud cover or something else in one scene against the other. Plus it might be easier to see which parameters you want to try and adjust if at all.
In the end I guess it's ease of use and satisfaction with final product, of which you are in the best position to judge given the pace of your workload.
(Plus maybe the possibility of corrupted files which you don't mention having an issue with but one or two others have. But is that an issue with them ?)
