You're so right. We have a family-owned grocery store where it had been around for decades and decades. Then the parents passed away who opened the store initially they actually had two locations both in our town. Then the daughters took over and they ran it for many years after and then they finally had enough they were getting into their senior years so they sold it to a grocery store chain that was much smaller. And one of the things that I liked about the original owners was back in their clearance scratch and dent area you can find some fantastic sales there and what I'm happy about is that the store still continues that same tradition.
I much prefer to shop in person. I had to buy a winter coat for my son at Kohl's and I earned a $10 gift certificate to come back and use. I will be using it this Friday to purchase a bathrobe. I needed one for a while and I want to be able to try it on I don't want to order it online
Yes exactly! And for me I feel a little bad going to buy a bathrobe because back several years ago when my daughter was married she and her husband bought me a $75 bathrobe I couldn't believe how much money they spent on it. And I was a younger smaller person then and it fit me perfectly. Now it's too tight on me and I don't know that I'm ever going to be able to wear it again so I thought no Now's the Time to find something reasonably priced and here I will get $10 off of it.

That's so true because they used to bag bell peppers in a bag on sell. I didn't see it lately at my grocery store. Red lobster is closed in Augusta Georgia.
I far prefer in-store grocery shopping, but am physically unable to at present. This makes home delivery a godsend! I recently needed to replace my 24 yr old gas stove and ran into what you're talking about with the wifi and electronics. I got the simplest model I could but there was no avoiding electronics. Same thing with my washer - I opted for a speed queen with agitator. Unfortunately still couldn't get away from the electronics completely with that. I try to embrace change, the good with the bad, but I don't have to be happy about it!
Well said!! My shopping habits are like yours. Thank you for keeping us updated on some of the subtler trends that I haven't paid much attention to, like the pickup and delivery requirements for using coupons.
That speaks to me so much !!! I am à gen x too ! When i bought my car about 4 years ago, i bought it with à stick shift cause my garagist said he would not be able to repair it if it was an automatic.
I use grocery pickup my two main reasons are to keep my budget in check and the main reason i have really bad anxiety. For me personally the benefits outweigh the occasional mishaps from pickup.
I live in France. I do not like crowds and so do my shopping on week days and avoid saturdays. But a couplé of times per year, i may have an émergence and have to go shopping on saturdays. And i am always so surprised to see all this traffic, all those people going shopping even if it is all crowded. So i do thing that people like to GO shopping, see, meet other people. See , touch, smell, try what they will buy. And even if i am not a fan because i do not like crowds, i think it is reassuring 😊
10:04 They want pick up and delivery to have less shoplifting. I DO use Sams Club delivery because its farther away and physically harder for me to purchase the bigger items.
I liked my own shopping at the grocery store, but it is helpful for 2 disabled people I know. I agree about the coupons. I do dislike my newer appliances. Too many choices and options I never use. And they do not last as long.
I have elderly neighbors that don’t have cell phones and our local grocery store has coupons thru text messages. That’s not right. I do see what my neighbors might need with the coupons I get. So we do help them
My assement is that the retail world wants to move to the Amazon fulfillment center model. They pick what you order from a picture with no concern about quality nor handling. Returns become increasingly difficult.
I love the brick and mortar stores as well. One town over from me they have opened an Amazon Fresh grocery store. I have an Amazon membership but I have no desire to shop at Fresh
They have made a lot of things cheaper online too My daughter always tells me that although I still want to do my own shopping in the store. She will show me examples like Target when she orders groceries or Aldi's and they actually charge less online that is so crazy She picks them up but she orders them online for pickup. I think that's insane. I also noticed how much smaller the portions are and how much less you get things seem to be shrinking such as bread I do buy bread from the store and the loaves are so tiny now it's ridiculous. And hamburger buns and all that it's so tiny now and cost more.
I could not agree more I am 62 retired and feel like I am living in a diffrent world then I grew up in I don't like ordering I am store shopper😊 that being said with all this new stuff comes more things to go wrong 😮
I prefer to order cloths online. Groceries i like going in store when I have the time but now that I’m working from home I don’t so what I do is place a pick up order, but I’ve learned the rhythms of when to order and that you don’t have to pick up the exact time they tell you too they’ll keep it in a refrigerated area for you so the trick is if you place for pick up at 8 AM you can go anytime you want later in the day that’s convenient for you to pick up that’s been very helpful
When we had a business, one time, I did a pick up from Sam’s and I had to wait so long that I finally had to go inside. I could have picked up everything on my list and been gone already and I was so frustrated, so I never did it again.
@ I called my local Kroger pick up manager ahead of time to ask what are the tricks to pick up. He said select the earliest time you can so you get the best items off the truck. Then pick up whenever you want during the day. You have to know it will not be ready when you select it to be 🙃
I am 56 and I am such a dinosaur. I want an on and off button. I want to hit on or start, then off when done, and that is it. I don't want to have to get a degree in how to use the fancy computer gadget. I hate my washing machine and when it breaks down completely we are buying an old fashioned simple machine. Yes, simplicity is best. I admit I order stuff from Amazon to avoid the crowds......stuff like toothpaste, clothes, shoes, shampoo, etc. If I find a pants or shirt that fits great......I will order in various colors, patterns, and I have a very simple wardrobe in general. Groceries I get mostly at Aldi's.
Yes, I'm the exact same way. Early on when covid first hit my husband suffers with chronic asthma so we had to be extremely careful and we quarantined significantly at home. Because of that we also ordered our groceries online and it used to frustrate me even if I checked off please do not substitute a lot of times they would anyway and I get an item I didn't want. Very often the produce I ordered was rotten by the time I got it it was just so frustrating to shop that way I want to put my hands on it myself I want to be able to see it to me that's the kind of grocery shopping I like to do. Not only that you don't get to take advantage of the sales oftentimes because you are not seeing what is in the stores on sale or clearance
The last refrigerator I bought just standard fridge. It came with an ice maker, but I said keep it just something to break. I love going to the store myself, but like you said less items clearances and those those that are clearances are so much more expensive then they used to be. I get steps walking around the grocery stores so I sure don’t want them to close. I go to the laundromat so I don’t worry about washer and dryers. Rather than my stove I have ventured towards using small appliances. I used mainly a toaster oven for like 14 years and now I am just using an air fryer for like the last three years. I also bought an electric skillet but haven’t used it yet. To me it’s simpler as a single person to use these smaller appliances, less wattage I think. I have come to rely on Costco more though. But I am trying to not buy so much as the sales were stuffing my fridge and freezer too much. When I am older I may have to do delivery, and then it won’t work to buy just two or three items at a time,
Wifi in an oven? OMG. They are way ahead of me on that one. My oven is an old second hand one that had to be rewired after the mice ate it! Still works fine! feel ambivalently about some of these trends. Being an Amazon shopper myself, I am grateful to have shopping options that don't involve me driving around fruitlessly looking for things, especially up here with limited shopping options and a long way to go. Also, I can see how pickup and delivery of groceries could be useful for people who can't get around. I used to do grocery store car pickup when I was working because I was so tired at the end of the day that it was great to just call and get that brought to the parking lot before going home. Most of what is being offered nowadays are definitely consumer driven. If there is a demand, there is a supply. I am glad that I've been able to simplify my life in so many ways at this point, I will say that!
Me too! I love the simple life! I do feel bad for the older people getting delivery though, my mother-in-law said she hast to pay a $10 tip just for them to bring it up four steps to her door. Otherwise, they sit on the curb and drive away.
@@PenniestoDollars Yeah, I get that. The tipping part is hard. I don't understand why corporations pit the consumer against the workers. They could pay the delivery drivers more and leave the consumers out of that cycle.
@@PenniestoDollars Living this simple life looks better and better the older I get. Less dependence (at least for now - aging is going to change that probably)
A long standing and seemingly rejuvenated trend is that there are few, what they used to call "stock" items; "open stock" items as well. This forces us to shop eith a thtift store or garage sale mentality in that if you see something you like you had better buy it now. Accompanying thisnismtjat even small kitcjen appliamces on line and in stores are seasonal. For example, try buying a waffle iron of your choice sometome netween Christmas and October/ November; this starts with the manufactures and following the Ball canning jars for the past 20 some years is a succinct story of this type of manufacturing through sales and profit practice. But getting back to pretty much all hardlines, or non grocery items, following the history of vaccum cleaner type items, availability of supplies like filters and bags, and even that a particular model maybe available beyond a simgle production run. You can't expect that a particular brand, product line, or product will be stocked in a store beyond the original delivery for anything that isnt a food.
BOGO used to mean Buy One Get One Free. Not anymore! Now it's Buy One Get One 50% off (or even 25% off). I've not found Clearance meat on over 4 years.
I was bummed when they did away with paper coupons but then they came out with the digital. Have you noticed though that even the digital coupons are more and more things that most people wouldn't be interested in? Much less of a selection
Yes, I have definitely noticed that a lot of the digital coupons and rebates are things that I don’t use and buy. I am not going to buy because they are more expensive even with the coupon.
I've done pickup a few times. The grocery store I did it at was ok but not great. Walmart was horrible and I tried there a few times. I don't plan to do it again. I've had grocery delivery once 2 years ago due to an unusual set of circumstances. It was the best of the experiences I mentioned but I had to pay a fee and tip which made it more expensive. I prefer shopping in person for everything and making my own choices. Also in person there might be some sales that aren't in an ad. Yes, I'm seeing more brick and mortar stores close.
I was told by someone at a grocery store that they are ordering less of items they put on sale.cthey want to sell out, not have so much left over that it may need to be put o clearance. I used to only shop the Clareance items there was so much. Now, hard to find or price really isn't clearance
Bah! Humbug! Such a shame that places like Amazon exist. I want to see what I am buying. As they put more stores out of business their service and quality will go down and prices up. I had my about 30 year old dryer repaired. Repairman said, keep it running as long as you can. Great quality!
bahaha - thats gross re: the brownies. we live in AU now - and Australians on the whole are MUCH more frugal than U.S. counterparts (aka live more like you & I re: spending). There's MUCH MUCH MUCH less pre made food over here. As a matter of fact - I remember feeling embarrassed looking up 'mixes' or spice mixes (how to get imports) vs make my own (which i make now but was busy busy at the time). I quite like how there are only a handful of salad dressings in the aisle, same with cereals, and on and on. The endless options & zillions of brands...just over the top. A relief to have simpler stores, foods much closer to the food chain. cheers from AU ms. bonita :)
All the people around me have a "magimix" which is a robot which makes all the cooking, and you can send à receipe to it from your Phone and it will tell you what ingrédients to put. Will Cook them etc... I can t see the pleasure in doing so. But really, most of the kitchens in France have it. I cannot make myself interested in such à thing 😮
Hmmm I’ve worked at a supermarket and we were told we had to cut the bags open before we threw it in the dumpster so that no one could dig it out. I’m glad some places are doing that because I always felt horrible about it.
I have made sure to buy the basic appliances when I have had to replace anything. Basic gas stove, fridge & washer/dryer. I don't have a dishwasher or microwave....I see more and more they just don't last and I don't need them. The only time I used pick or delivery was when I broke my ankle and couldn't drive for 6 weeks. I hated every time I used it. I would rather go in person....plus you wont find any deals with pick up/delivery. Today I was able to get 2 whole wheat Barilla rotini 16 oz boxes for 50 cents each and they don't expire until January 2026, and 2 ready made salads for .50 cents each that I can take to work tomorrow & Friday and they don't expire until this coming Saturday. Unless I would have a medical situation where I cant drive to a grocery store I will be doing all my shopping in person. Not a fan of online glasses. I did try but it was too hard to pick out what I liked and needed so I ended up going to the business with my eye doctor to get them. Good video...thank you!
Guess I am in the minority on wifi on the appliances. I love that things are coming with wifi. Not because I use it for actually making things function but I love getting notifications for when things are done. Other wise a lot of the time I forget its even going. I do agree with pickup and delivery. I dont want people touching my stuff. I mean I know they have to touch it to put it on the shelf but thats it. Ya I am not a fan of pick up and delivery. Well for groceries. I do love it for places like Lowes. Nothing is more frustrating than spending hours trying to find things when I can just sit at home and order what i need and then pick it up. I think stores are pushing their store brands and thats the "coupon priced" items now. But ya not much in the way of good deals anymore. I dont shop locally. Well I do but I prefer online not because I dont want to support local but the time wasted trying to find things in stock locally is just not worth it anymore. Especially when we have to drive so far to shop in the first place and then cant find what you are looking for. Hours spent trying to find stuff here in town of my life I wont get back when I can pop online, order what I want from a wide selection of choices and boom delivered to my house. I'm an Amazon girl. But again its really not by choice its by the reality of shopping here locally. What a fun topic. Thanks for the chat. Enjoyed it!

I grocery shop at Kroger. I have noticed that more and more people are grabbing the reduced/marked down items. It used to be that I didn't see many people looking at the reduced items but now I've noticed many people are grabbing them. I think people just can't afford the high prices of food now and they have gotten very smart about the mark downs. Maybe that is what is happening to your yogurt. And I have noticed that the prices on the marked down/reduced items are even getting outrageous! I'm with you on shopping at an actual store. I have to try on my clothes, especially pants. I used to buy my pants from Kmart. I am not much of an online shopper. I miss the old days and the old ways! I guess I'm just old (I'm almost 63!). I wish appliances were made to last like they used to be. Give me an old Kenmore or Maytag any day! Love your channel! Bobbi from Virginia
My local store just raised the reduced produce price from .99 to 1.50. That's a huge percentage increase. They rarely have any reduced anyway, so it doesn't really matter much.
I’ll tell you what I don’t do… I refuse to use those self check outs. I don’t work there. I don’t get an employee discount. It takes jobs away and they don’t pass any savings onto us. Please everyone. Stop using those
And not talking about cars which drive more and more at your place. The car makes actions without you asking 😮 I think it is frightening in fact. Whar about our brain 😮😮😮 !
They give preferential parking to pick up & delivery patrons. So irritating. I go In store, select my own everything. I'm looking for clearance. Some stores, like the bankrupt Big Lots, are having higher prices on their 'clearance' food. Nix that. Refuse to purchase. Yes, BL is permanently closing 2 area stores. (Rite Aid & the 99 already did). Sad to see the closures. 😌 I WILL NOT DO ONLINE SHOPPING. (😏Yes, I have done some the last two years at Christmas time and will not be doing that this year.) I Agree. I PREFER & WILL SHOP SOLELY AT BRICK & MORTAR STORES.🎉 🛒I'm slowly changing my shopping 'habits' as well. 🛍️ CA is removing plastic bags in 2025. We pay 10¢ each right now. I use & reuse for other things. I will use plastic trash bags of my own if necessary! Yes, 'reusable cloth bags' are another option. Just make sure you don't contaminate your bags with meat bacteria... Or everyone will be sick... Including the checkout employees. 📟📸About those snap your receipt companies, the amount of personal info. they gain is disarming and they share your info., find out what you buy, where you shop, where you live, etc. I'm feeling that the time spent snapping pics of receipts & the $ or Gift card amounts earned through points are minimal and not worth the cost of what they're getting from me, from you. Thinking of cutting this out of my 2025 new year. What's your take on the matter?
I still take pictures of my receipts as I do make a few hundred on it each year which adds to my budget. I also live so far from stores that I don’t figure they’re getting much information about where I live. You are absolutely right about them getting preferential treatment for parking. There’s many times I go to park and it’s only for pick up only. Where my son lives on the East Coast, they haven’t had plastic bags for a long time. You can’t even buy them. So if you go in without a bag, you are juggling your groceries on the way out individually.
I see everything you talked about. It's scary to me. I believe this is creating a whole new era of people who can't take care of themselves.
🥰🥰🥰
Well said!! My shopping habits are like yours. Thank you for keeping us updated on some of the subtler trends that I haven't paid much attention to, like the pickup and delivery requirements for using coupons.
Thank you, Linda!
That speaks to me so much !!! I am à gen x too !
When i bought my car about 4 years ago, i bought it with à stick shift cause my garagist said he would not be able to repair it if it was an automatic.
I learned how to drive on a stick shift, and most of my cars in my lifetime have been a stick shift. I feel they are safer on the ice!
I use grocery pickup my two main reasons are to keep my budget in check and the main reason i have really bad anxiety. For me personally the benefits outweigh the occasional mishaps from pickup.
I am glad it is available for those who need it.
I agree with you
💛
Your dad was spot on😊
He was so wise in so many ways.
He sounds like my husband.
I also tried to avoid weekend shopping for the same reason!
10:04 They want pick up and delivery to have less shoplifting. I DO use Sams Club delivery because its farther away and physically harder for me to purchase the bigger items.
That is a great point that I never thought of! Someone just showed that our local Walmarts are now locking the batteries due to shoplifting.
I agree. In the store that I shop at I am always dodging other Shoppers who are shopping for delivery
More and more! I really noticed it the other day and thought, wow, customers used to have the right away!
I know and I guess they're on a time crunch because a lot of times they are speeding up and down the aisles really almost in an unsafe way
They have started grocery pickup in our little town (3000) even the DG does!! I want to feel the clothes too cause such a hassle to send back.
💛💛💛💛
I do all my own IN store shopping only!!!
I liked my own shopping at the grocery store, but it is helpful for 2 disabled people I know.
I agree about the coupons.
I do dislike my newer appliances. Too many choices and options I never use. And they do not last as long.
👍
I have elderly neighbors that don’t have cell phones and our local grocery store has coupons thru text messages. That’s not right. I do see what my neighbors might need with the coupons I get. So we do help them
It is hard for some to use those digital coupons. Agreed
My assement is that the retail world wants to move to the Amazon fulfillment center model. They pick what you order from a picture with no concern about quality nor handling. Returns become increasingly difficult.
Great point.
I love the brick and mortar stores as well. One town over from me they have opened an Amazon Fresh grocery store. I have an Amazon membership but I have no desire to shop at Fresh
Interesting! I didn’t know there was an Amazon fresh store that you could shop in person at.
Same here. I thought it was just connected with your Amazon Prime account.
Things have definitely gotten smaller. I have noticed that about hamburger buns.
We are still buying from brick and motar, in-person. We prefer it 'cause we know what we're paying for.
Me too 💜
Went to a BJs Warehouse they other day...they have robotic stock checkers roaming around the store😮
Oh my goodness!
YES!!! I hate that thing!!!
I could not agree more I am 62 retired and feel like I am living in a diffrent world then I grew up in I don't like ordering I am store shopper😊 that being said with all this new stuff comes more things to go wrong 😮
👍👍👍
You have to know it will not be ready when you select it to be 🙃
@ Thanks, Sage!!
I am definitely the same on clothes and shoes. If I find something that fits, I stick with that brand and get it in a couple of colors.
I like old-fashioned ways. I like to be able to walk into a store and pick the things that I want. Online has its place but it's not for me
I like to pick my own food, too.
When I am older I may have to do delivery, and then it won’t work to buy just two or three items at a time,
I grew up with my mother using an electric skillet for almost everything! I have one, and I love it. Thank you for commenting!
@@PenniestoDollars I have mine from many, many years ago. Still use it!
@MyMountainHomeandKitchen We could only wish
@@PenniestoDollars Living this simple life looks better and better the older I get. Less dependence (at least for now - aging is going to change that probably)
@MyMountainHomeandKitchen I get that💜
A long standing and seemingly rejuvenated trend is that there are few, what they used to call "stock" items; "open stock" items as well.
Great points.
BOGO used to mean Buy One Get One Free. Not anymore! Now it's Buy One Get One 50% off (or even 25% off). I've not found Clearance meat on over 4 years.
You are right. And if it is BOGO, they double the price to make up for the one you get free.
I can't keep up with all the changes in the way things are done!
I can’t either. These are just things that I’ve noticed and I’m sure there are a lot more.
You described what I have heard as well. Once you tip and pay the fee, it’s not a great deal.
I was told by someone at a grocery store that they are ordering less of items they put on sale.cthey want to sell out, not have so much left over that it may need to be put o clearance. I used to only shop the Clareance items there was so much. Now, hard to find or price really isn't clearance
That may absolutely be what is happening. Thank you for sharing that!
I love the new intro music
Thank you!
Bah! Humbug! Such a shame that places like Amazon exist. I want to see what I am buying. As they put more stores out of business their service and quality will go down and prices up. I had my about 30 year old dryer repaired. Repairman said, keep it running as long as you can. Great quality!
Again, great points, Dora!
bahaha - thats gross re: the brownies. we live in AU now - and Australians on the whole are MUCH more frugal than U.S. counterparts (aka live more like you & I re: spending). A relief to have simpler stores, foods much closer to the food chain. cheers from AU ms. bonita :)
That is so interesting to hear! Thank you for telling me about Australia shopping!
Jetson 🤗😂😂😂
Really!!!
That sounds straight out of the future!
I have never heard of an oven with Wi-Fi wow
I hadn’t either. I thought he was pulling my leg.
🤣
Some supermarkets donate older food to church food pantries. Then they get a tax deduction for the full amount.
Agree!
Thank you! I agree! The deals have to be found in person!
I am able to mix my own brownies and cookies. That's crazy
Yes and it isn’t that hard.
True
Who did you get to change your stove to propane? Did the store do it? I have been looking at them and trying to make a decision.
The store won’t do propane so we hired a private contractor about 25 miles away.
Enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing your perspective! I appreciate having people that look at this in a more modern fashion to explain it to people like me!
@@PenniestoDollars I enjoy your channel so much. I like to hear the different perspectives and I enjoy how you look at things. Always leaves me thinking lol I have to add here that my husband is 60 and he is like "I dont get all this stuff ... why? " on most of the modern changes lol I am 52 and am the opposite. I love my computer and all the wifi/bluetooth stuff. Honestly I think change is awesome and totally terrible LOL We are in a weird era of change. I dont like what its doing to our world or our planet but there doesnt seem to be a way to change the speed of the train. Anyways thanks again for the chat. You always make me think lol and I love that. Have a great one!
@MyLittleRealities I’m so happy to hear that you enjoy the videos!
I agree with all of that, and my family was definitely Kmart. Shoppers!
My local store just raised the reduced produce price from .99 to 1.50. That's a huge percentage increase. They rarely have any reduced anyway, so it doesn't really matter much.
@azgardenlover370 I have noticed that on items as well!
I’ll tell you what I don’t do… I refuse to use those self check outs. I don’t work there. I don’t get an employee discount. It takes jobs away and they don’t pass any savings onto us. Please everyone. Stop using those
❤️
And not talking about cars which drive more and more at your place. The car makes actions without you asking 😮
I think it is frightening in fact. Whar about our brain 😮😮😮 !
Yes, that would scare me.
If u can log into your appliances via WiFi, so can hackers! Stick to the basics
Great point!
(😏Yes, I have done some the last two years at Christmas time and will not be doing that this year.)
I Agree. I PREFER & WILL SHOP SOLELY AT BRICK & MORTAR STORES.🎉
🛒I'm slowly changing my shopping 'habits' as well.
WI-FI. LMAO
I know! I thought it was a joke!
