- From "Ry Cooder & The Moula Banda Rhythm Aces: Let's Have A Ball", a film by Les Blank taped at The Catalyst, Santa Cruz, CA on March 25'th 1987.
Comment from MrBillindallas:
Concert was from a two night run - the last of nine total dates on the NorCal tour. Shot on 16mm film with an audio remote truck in the alley. Movie was released in Europe but not in the US. Great band, at one of the best venues in the 'States, the last two nights of the mini-tour they were truly on fire. One venue was so small the band filled the stage and the dance floor.

One of the great American songs in popular music ever !
Jeah is Right!
Sing on legend..The one and only Ry Cooder..great guitar player..listening still in 2022..got it..phenomenal..great band
So warming, comforting, enchanting! Balm for the soul. Am I the only one who needs this every day?
no you're not!!
What touches me most about this guy, this Ry Cooder; is how he is always so willing to let other musicians take the lead, let them fully express themselves, notwithstanding his own greatness and musicianship! This guy is a real mentor and performer!
man... that accordion brings it all together. Viva El Flaco!
An instrument that breaths life into any song.
I've always loved Flacco and his accordion.
Only Ry Cooder had the foresight to bring all these great musicians together. This is a once-in-a-lifetime happening although I know they had other performances together. Thank you Ry Cooder and all the members of this performance. Ry is the King of vibrato whether playing here or with a slide.
Ry and Flacco with a marvelous group backing them. I sway in my dreams to this treasure.
Its many influences all come together and become great American music.
Superbe version of this song
Great backup singers..For Ry Cooder
Bobby King and Terry Evans.
Ry always plays with so.much joy. God Bless you, Ry Cooder. You are a beautiful gift from the Lord, and a precious blessing.
Like teardrops falling from his guitar, beautiful.
I could listen to that piano all day. Amazing. And a nice slow waltz is always a pleasure.
Best ever rendering of Goodnight Irene, even surpassing Leadbelly. It's the 3am bar feel to perfection, and the Mexican sound also just hit my spot!
And the singing is excellent! William Baker just doesn't get it
No where near as good as his version from. Chicken skin music album
I met Ry Cooder at Lloyd Bagg's studio in LA back in 1979. Both Ry and I were just picking up our guitars that Lloyd had repaired so we chatted and played some songs for each other. I had no idea who he was, but after I heard him play I tried to recruit him into my band. He graciously declined. After Ry left, Lloyd played me some of his records, and I've been smitten with Ry's music ever since. The thing I love most about Ry's work is his focus on authenticity and history. With him a song is not just a tune, but rather a living artifact, which a great many souls have touched, molded, and in turn have been touched and molded by. This performance is a great example of that. He actually looks like he's sick, and his voice is so hoarse, but all of that imperfection helps to convey the message of the song - the despair and desperation, with Irene the only salvation slipping away, at the very edge of ending it all, and the final forlorn call to others to change their wicked ways and live clean, lest they suffer a similar fate.
+Saul Matas I met Ry Cooder last September in New Braunfels TX after a show at Gruene Hall. I talked graciously with all of us and signed his book of short stories among other items. A great gentleman and a world ambassador for great music everywhere

Thank you for this great reminiscence. I’m an ole lady guitar & ukulele player and have been a fan of Ryland since the eponymous vinyl album with the Airstream trailer down to his Prodigal Son preaching “You Must Unload” in Carnegie Hall. He’s taught me not just great guitar licks & riffs but a great side dose of American history (L.A & California) in his albums and book of stories. I take solace in the portrait he casts of the southland, and his droll, humane understanding of what makes the culture of the borderland so compelling.
Wonderful comment. Wonderful thread. Thanks everyone ❤
Awesome singer, band and music. ❤
The drummer on the brushes is great too. Very mellow.
Sensational..rhythem and
Melody is fantastic..Ry cooder is a genius singing and playing slider guitar..band I'd great
Glad to see Flaco was asked to be included.
I've been watching this concert since I first saw it around 200K views for the whole show. One of the most quintessential concerts of those years, so gritty, so raw, so real. All the players are on full bore. However you might try to describe it, it just gets better with time.
I had the pleasure of buying Flaco a drink in Kidderminster of all places. Ry and Flaco were a team made in heaven.
To say Wonderful it is not enough ... this is paradise for ears!!! Epic! Greetigs from Macedonia!

Merry Chrismas Irene and Happy New Year ! Ry Cooder is legend and the band is fantastic with backup singers in harmony..Merry Christmas to all..r u with me?
Such a brilliant performance. So chilled back. I lost nearly ten minutes of my life lost in that performance. I had the beer...just lacked the Caribbean and the waves. Superb!
Ry Cooder, ein Weltklasse Musiker der es verstanden hat andere Weltklasse Musiker zusammen zu bringen.
Ich bin noch kein Fan, aber ich denke es könnte bald soweit sein.
Danke Ry.😊
Ich verstehe Sie.
Epic. Hands down captured the sense of the original. And what fine musicianship all around. Wish I could have been there!
A musical feast! Thank you Ry Cooder.
Listening to music like this is like herbs of life. So wonderful.
Best band I've ever seen...
by far the best interpretation of this iconic song! thanks a lot - muchas gracias - Ry!!!
My brother played this with his blues harp at the end of my fiancés funeral on a hill in Scotland under a rainy sky .
This version of Ry Cooder just meets my emotions, thinking back to that day in April 2004.
It made a perfect final to a great but too short life of a very unique, cheerful, openminded, caring and warmhearted person, who loved life, laughter, music - and me.
r.i.p. my darling xxx never forgotten
Andrea from Berlin/Germany
Best version. Thanks for posting Irene x
Ry Cooder has been blind in one eye from an accident when he was 4 years old---for your information---he is not high on drugs.
Thank you Ry Cooder for all of your wonderful music through out the years!!
I mean he surely was also high, what’s the problem
The comments by is brothers in music move me mightily. this song changed the views of a 14 year old Montana kid. I acquired a 78 of Huddy Ledbetter singing Irene and playing 12 string. It changed my views in ways that I didn't realize at the time. I 1953 I boarded a bus in Memphis Tenn I found I couldn't sit in the front of the bus. To much derision I might add. I didn't realize until much later in life why I probably did it. These songs attach themselves to us in ways we don't realize. Remember I was a 15 year old . Montana hick at the time The blues grabbed me and never let go.
Has the right feel. Real folk, real emotion, real good.
A genius at being the best..Ry Coodee is a legend ..sensational..great band..idios
Flaco makes this wonderful song really complete.
Legend
Tanta alma! Tanta beleza!
This band is incredible!!!!!!
Stunned .this is the greatest I've heard
Aye saw Ry play twice and both times this was his last tune - both times it left me in tears :( talk about LOVING it. Thank you thank you thank you x
American soul so so great
Ry Cooder...Pure musician!
Thanks
That is just gorgeous.
Thank you for listing the names of the players and the songs they are playing. This is a valuable record of a real good time. Van Dyke Parks needed more air time. Where is he now?😅
Hope's doing well. I think his last known works were terrifc arrangements for different artists (eg a Mexican harpist). A true and most charming gentleman. And a real genius. They don't make 'em like him anymore...
Wordt ik blij van !
Ry Cooder insuperabile Van Dyke Parks eccezionale Flaco Jimenez formidabile tutti gli altri strumentisti bravissimi
Wonderful!! Greetings to one and all from Big Hugh of Mundlimup in fabulous Western Australia.
So sweet to spend my Sunday finding GEMS.
By far the best post Leadbelly version
This is marvelous and the rhythem is so terrific and the lyrics are magical and the band is sliding along in there tempo..Ry Cooder is excellent at getting out his say in a song and passit along..😂This is just terrific flowing out to the fans wherever they may be..don't stay out late at night..got it?
this is world classssss !!!!
So lovely and GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Ry Cooder
This song is by Leadbelly a singer from New Orleans who was plundered and defrauded , songwriter notably of " the house of the rising sun" ...
Fantastic!
Gemütlich und total klasse.Geht immer!
Incredibly creative mix of cultures. I just love this.
And I agree with you!!---Beautiful!!!
FANTASTIC! That is all!
My Gramps used to strum this on his guitar, good mems!
Best version!
Ry had ‘Legend’ stamped on him before he left the womb.
Helt fantastisk sang og musik
Looks like good old Ry had a few too many lol . I love this guy !!! Very under rated , one of the greatest of my generation :) keep on truckin Ry !...thanks for this post
The pianist is Van Dyke Parks, a graet musician too!
gbw52 Not much of a lyricist, from what I've seen and heard.
Chanson pour ma mère qui s'appelait Irène. Que de beaux souvenirs. Renée
Wonderful!
a very poingant song. ry and his pals know who they are. being able to understand the song and alleviate at the same time. it is nigh near impossible but if you know ry and his pals, nothing is impossible. fanks
Pure class!
just excellent
One of my many favourite Ry Cooder Tracks, thanks Ry,and thanks 'mbroders' for your TH-cam placement too,Murray in Scotland.
Amazing band xx 💋💋💋💋🌹⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️🎄🎄🎄
This is real fantastic brilliant.
Sweet piano work !
This rendition is a classic
This performance is a good example of why Ry Cooder is not the household name of, say, Neil Young or Jackson Browne. He took this song deeper than even Leadbelly, the author, did. It's great work, but I have to wonder what it was like for the audience, expecting some rock 'n roll thrills.
Great performance,,,,my wifes name is Irene and she is not too well at the moment,so good night Irene and I'll see you in my dreams...Nite nite sleep tight..
sublime!
It wasn´t until I tried some grass that I realized the depth of this rendering.
Geweldig heerlijk nummer❤
Ojalà viniera a Barcelona alguna vez. :)
........simply great.
Whenever I should die, this is the song I would hear because of its sentence and most of all because of this marvelous voice and musicians, I would play and share the rithm in my coffin and everything would be allright,
Saw the Man perform after the Little Sister release in Nijmegen (that's Halland, folks), with his band, including those great vocalists. Loved him before, still love him since, Great musician, great man. Ryand, TOP1
I agree! :)
is this a great song or wat? man o man its very good and y do like it
Van Dyke Parks!!!
Great!!! Thanks :-)
Don`t forget George Bohannon ,Seve Douglas, Jorge Calderon, Miguel Cruz and those backup singers, including,BOBBY KING.
Ry...the Master at work!!
I miss Terry Evans. A fantastic voice.
This is just beautiful music - Flaco Jiminez is an amazing artist - I agree wth @ desmoinesst - never heard of him before - but he is the best I have ever heard! He is the Eric Clapton ot the Accordian!
Flaco CANT/COULDN'T been mistaken...
His own rhythm of vibrato, his own speed on the keys..., couldn't been mistaken, only FLACO did songs his way. 💯 👍
Has Flaco died?
@@yianpap6093 I don't think.
awesome. never heard of these people. my mother told me about them. why aren't they really known
I have only one word: FABOULUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Listen also to the music from Flaco Jiminez
The story goes that Leadbelly, during one of his stays in prison, used to sing this to the warden's wife in the evening when she would come out to tend her garden.
Wow flaco Jimenez all of them really
bad ass song love it.
Flaco my HERO!!
